Kicking Ass: The Democratic Party's Blog

Evening Open Thread

  • A great new video from the Ohio Democratic Party, giving Ohioans a voice and allowing them to respond to McCain's views on jobs. Check it out.
  • It must be web video day here at the Democratic Party, because we've got another one for you. This one holds McCain accountable for pushing Bush's failed Social Security scheme. He might not call it privatization anymore, now that it's an election year, but that wasn't always the case.
  • And faced with bad polling, the White House invents their own way to judge public opinion.

Chat away...

Now that's an interesting question someone posed on MSNBC just now:

Would everyone in the world be better off if Saddam was still in power?

I'm pretty sure the Iraqis would say so. But maybe not the oil company executives?

It's only been Bush constantly telling us that it's the case that has kept the question from being asked. Was this the Big Lie of the late 20th century?

As I recall, the Egyptians had worked out a deal with Saddam where he would have gone into exile for a something like $50 million (What a deal!) But Bush rejected the offer out of hand without any debate taking place within our country.

See how important an open debate of the issues is to a free society. And just how free is our society these days?

I would have gone into exile for $50 million dollars and a get-out-of- jail card.

FISA will pass July 8. Think back a bit to 2002 in October. Think ahead a bit to the coming Iran drumbeats. How do we handle such things constantly going on?

By July 8 we will all be on board, just like we have been before.

Well, it takes a General to get the tanks rolling, folks.

Now that Wesley Clark asked the most unasked question in everyone's mind, perhaps it's no longer tabboo to talk about it? I sure hope so.

Why is being shot down over North Vietnam make you a military genius? McCain is a hero for withstanding all that torture (please take note Mr. Woo and Adderton), but why does that make him a brillant military strategist?

He was shot down (some say more than once). That could be a bad sign, right?

The experience you gained from getting shot down and captured only helps if you are planning on getting trapped by the enemy again.

Is McCain walking into a boxed canyon with his insistence that we attack Iran without any effort to find out if they really have a nuclear bomb program...only that Israel could be in danger? Wasn't that one of Bush's arguments?

I'd hate to be fooled again.

I'd much rather put my faith in the guy who had the good sense not to be fooled by either Bush or Saddam.

Now that the question has been asked, McCain must demonstrate to the American people that he has the military planning and strategy credentials his campaign claims he does.

I look forward to having McCain thoroughly explain his Iran War rules of engagement and post-war strategy for success versus the way Bush did it in Iraq. Is there any difference?

If he a miliary genius, we should be dazzeled by McCain's attention to detail and the sources of his intelligence...and it better not be just Lieberman versus Cheney.

8
SandyH on June 30, 2008 at 07:18 PM

No it didn't, Sunny.

Maybe that's why McCain seems so confused. He reads this blog?

I think the key to this election is whether American voters want to start another war with Iran before the other two end.

It doesn't matter what the erroneous intelligence says from Bush's personal spy program. Everyone knows that the Republicans have privatized it out to their incompetent friends so it won't be worth crap...just like with Iraq.

So we sweeten the deal a little more and ask voters how they think McCain's War will affect their standard of living...or what's left of it by November?

Can they live with $10 a gallon gasoline...when it's even available with the Gulf oil tanker routes closed permanently because of McCain's War...for 100 years?

All we have to do is remind voters that McCain's War will directly affect the cost of gasoline. Let's not make this too difficult.

McCain's War/High Gasoline VS. Peace/Prosperity

Bush VS. FDR

War VS. Prosperity

Let's keep it simple, folks.

A cold front came through last night and it's like 70 degrees right now. I'm going for a walk before dinner with my husband.

Good evening, all. I'm out of here.

Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to four hundred million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the country’s religious leadership. The covert activities involve support of the minority Ahwazi Arab and Baluchi groups and other dissident organizations. They also include gathering intelligence about Iran’s suspected nuclear-weapons program.

Thanks congress

cheney has been apparently funding the majahadine (sp?) for the last five years. This is a group on the terrorist list. They are collecting the money and depositing it in London banks.

congress approved up to $400 billion to destabilize Iran and perform covert operations within Iran.

congressa approved this just after the NIE came out last year saying that Iran was not working on an atomic weapon.

This whole thing is very hush hush and cheney hardly gave congress any information at all.

My answer would have been FUCK YOU bush, but cheney prevailed. congress didn't want to be seen as not supporting the troops.

With this legislation, cheney feels that he can attack Iran whenever he wants without prior approval from congress. cheney feels that we would have to have troops on the ground first in order to do any good with a bombing campaign. cheney has been stockpiling cruise missiles since last fall. This big scandal with a plane hauling atomic armed cruise missiles across the US is no doubt part of cheney's secret war.

How do we think it is proper to attack Iran without provication? cheney feels that he already as the authority to do anything he wants including invading Iran.

In reality, Iran has been a stabilizing influence in Iraq.

Read the article......

Preparing The Battlefield

cheney and bush need to be removed from office tomorrow. This article appears in the current issue of the New Yorker. It is by Seymour Hersch.

The first one was some general bragging about catching the raghead that planned the bombing of the Cole in Yemen. The suspect said that the only reason he confessed is that they torured him.

WTF is wrong with this picture.

A later news report stated that several detainees at Guantanamo are suing the US for torturing them.

Dawnie,

I was in Sam's Club the other night for something, and stopped by the books.

Coulter has a new book out, and it was on the shelves there.

all the other books were showing signs that people had picked up a copy.

Coulter's was packed right out to the front, nobody even picked up a copy to look at !

WHY would anyone want to read hatred, vicious slanted attacks? Only a sick sick mind reads Ann Coulter !

Posted by PamB on October 3, 2007 at 01:40 PM

So, the wretched old snag who looks down her nose at Wal Mart shoppers and calls them trailer trash, shops at Sam's Club. Does she not realize that Walmart owns Sam's Club? Does she not realize that Sam's club is a tacky version of Walmart?

I look down on YOU shopping for your clothes and daily goods at Walmart, and I call you trailer trash and white trash not because of Walmart but because of what you are ! there is a difference.

Yes, I fully understand that Sams and Home Depot and Walmart are all owned by the Walton family! But I DO have to go to Sam's for items for my husband's business not found elsewhere, and when there, I look at books, which are 40% cheaper than Amazon, another right wing corp.

Posted by PamB on October 3, 2007 at 08:17 PM

There ya go. Yesterday you said you went to Sam's on a one day pass and bought some batteries while you were there. Last year you said you went there to get SOME items for your husband's business not found elsewhere.

What kind of batteries does Sam't have that are not found elsewhere?

Walmart doesn't own the Home Depot.

Sandy, I have been asking this right along, much to the troll's chagrin! When we played war as kids, the one who got shot and captured was the LOSER of the game. We did not give him any medals! He was considered a poor soldier! Yet McCain and the pitiful Republicans with no one else to run, are trying to portray this as some kind of wonderful valiant service!

Oh, this brings back memories of when they were trying to instill us with fear of anthrax being in our mailboxes, etc! A case of rounding up US citizens to make it look like we had terrorists here trying to get us!!!!! LIARS!

US Settles With Scientist Named in Anthrax Cases

Admitting no wrongdoing, the US Department of Justice settled with Steven Hatfill, named a "person of interest" in the 2001 anthrax investigations, for $5.85 million.

The Justice Department agreed yesterday to pay biological-weapons expert Steven J. Hatfill a settlement valued at $5.85 million to drop a lawsuit he filed after then-Attorney General John D. Ashcroft named him a "person of interest" in the investigation of the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks.

The agreement, in which the government did not admit wrongdoing, ended a five-year legal saga. It came after months of mediation in a case that pitted investigators and major news organizations against the scientist, who said his privacy rights had been violated in the race to solve the notorious crimes.

North Korea Smackdown of Bush!!!

How the "Dear Leader" Blackmailed Bush

By Mike Whitney

30/06/08 "ICH" -- - -After seven years of nonstop belligerence and saber rattling, the Bush administration has given North Korea everything it has demanded. In return, the US gets nothing. The UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, will not get access to Kim Jong-il's nuclear stockpile or its "Top-Secret" file on weapons programs or be allowed to conduct surprise "go anywhere, see anything" inspections. Kim will continue to develop his long-range ballistic-missile delivery system, the Taepodong 2, just as he will (presumably) continue to export nuclear weapons technology to allies in the Middle East and elsewhere. The Bush administration has made a very dangerous enemy and the present agreement does nothing to mitigate that threat. It merely sends a message to America's rivals around the world that the US can be blackmailed if the stakes are high enough. The United States has been humiliated by a man who many believe is an unstable megalomaniac and a ruthless tyrant. Was that the goal?

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article20204.htm

CNS doesn't link to anything. Those 3 "graphs" they show are just random lines with no charts showing the formula used to determine any ratios (and they even covered their asses by stating that they took 6 month estimates and extrapolated them to 365 days).

Also, if you knew how to read you would see that they lumped ALL employees into one group, excluding unpaid interns (of which Grampy Grumpy has the most), which would skew the figures.

Also, both McSame and Clinton have been in D.C longer, so their staff has therefore been Civil Service Employees longer, thus increasing their base pay rate.

The ONLY source for that bullshit claim is this one blog post. Do you think if it was true some media outfit would go with it, rather than let it slide? Only FOX picked it up (Hannity squawked about it on his marathon of misinformation, too).

It went from the non-real CNS, to Michelle Martian and Larry Johnson's anti-Obama hate screed, which in turn spread it to all of those PUMA freakazoid sites like Hillaryis44 and other Susan Hu cult whack job racist Obama smear sites.

Now that their hero Larry Sinclair crashed and burned in a spectacular way reminiscent of the Hindenburg (which looks amazingly like Larry Sinclair) the Hillbots and wingnuts and Klansmen and other assorted racists are just going the typical Pug route...making shit up.

Find a real source that has links to more than itself.

No story there. Government employees work for the GOVERNMENT under pay guidelines set up by the Department of Labor, of which Elaine Chao (Mrs. Mitch McConnell) is the Secretary. Bitch at her if you don't like Chimpy's appointee.

Well, they put me back to 7 comments. Somebody doesn't have a sense of humor?

That Princess Diana crack came on good authority... directly from the Drudge Report. They said Cindy wants to be just like Diana when she's coronated give or take about 60 years.

Funny I only remember seeing Diana driving a Jaguar not a NASCAR.

Since it's useless to even try to spar with the trolls, I'm making like a tree and leaving. Bye.

Thomas Lifson is a wingnut who runs the batshit crazy right-wing extremely racist "American Thinker" blog. It's logo is Uncle Sam sitting on a toilet in the same pose as Rodin's "The Thinker". He is as much a climatologist as you are a Mensa member.

Frank Zappa did that schtick in the 70's with his 'Phi Zappa Crappa' posters.

This idiot can't even come up with his own "joke".

The guys at "Sadly, NO!" have helped him out with an updated logo:

Wanker Doodle Dandy*

mclame doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. That's what being born in 1862 does to a person when they reach such an advanced age. mclame is too old to be president. He will be 80 in 8 years and jeb bush as vice president would be a shoe in for another moron bushie.

In university years ago we studied famous scientists. Take for instance Einstein. He produced his best work when he was under 40. This is true of most famous scientists of which I have read. It's called old age. This was also true of Edison. He produced his most famous inventions when he was under 40.

I can tell you first hand. I have lost the spark of youth I had when I was in my thirties. Maybe there should be an age limit on old farts in government. Their brains become ossified.

Our monsoon is supposed to be here within the next two weeks. It's about time we got some rain.

mcFlipflop strikes again.

"McCain said he knows he has work to do to convince voters in states losing jobs to Mexico and other countries, such as Pennsylvania where he campaigned Monday, that free-trade agreements will benefit them and their families over time."

Pennsylvania is another country? How about American jobs asshole?

"I understand it's very tough. But for me to give up my advocacy of free trade would be a betrayal of trust," he said. "And the most precious commodity I have with the American people is that they trust me."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. You loser.

"mccain is a strong supporter of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, among the U.S., Canada and Mexico."

"When McCain went to Canada, Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama suggested he went to promote the agreement rather than stay home and defend his views in places like Ohio and other states where NAFTA is blamed for shifting millions of manufacturing jobs to other countries."

Right on Barack.

"McCain insisted the trip to Latin America was not intended to be political."

BWAHAHAHAHAHA. Loser

"McCain said Uribe had rescued Colombia from becoming a "failed state" and only indirectly criticized the government's human rights record. While he said he anyone perpetuating human rights abuses in the country should be arrested and tried, he insisted the country's struggle with the issue was no justification for blocking the proposed agreement."

mclame is kissing uribi's ass just like bush and cheney because they have oil. Sound familiar.

More...........

Why doesn't mclame chastise bush and cheney for their planned attack on Iran if Barack gets elected. Unless, unless mclame=bush and doesn't give a damn about the American people.

John McCain has changed his mind about the president's tax cuts and drilling for oil off the U.S. coast

Isn't it time to melt the ice and forgive those that we have felt have trespassed against us?

Posted by SandyH on June 30, 2008 at 04:27 PM

Yeah, Sandy...and every time I start to feel that way something like last week's episode of "Thirty Days" comes along and makes me regret it. Oh, the poor downtrodden religious woman who feels so abused because she tells gay people they shouldn't raise kids and they try to point out the flaws in her arguments. Oh, they're attacking her by telling her THEIR views, but its not an attack when SHE does it, no. I guess that's because SHE knows SHE is right. And HOW does she know she's right, you ask? She prayed about it and received an answer! Funny, how come I've never ONCE heard of ANY of these assholes receiving an answer to their prayers that was any different than the one they already had in their narrow-minded bigoted peabrains?

So you know what, Sandy? I'll forgive when they learn to LOVE. Until then, they can eat shit and die.

Morning JohnBoy and Cate,

Yoho, Yoho, it's off to work I go. I think I have gone around the bend. Gas went up another 10 cents a gallon yesterday and no one in Washinton is listening. All they are thinking about is their July 4th recess and the coming summer recess, and Thanksgiving recess and Christmas recess, ad infinitum. All bush and cheney are thinking of is their attack on Iran and their immigration to abu dhabi or whereever the hell they are fleeing to in raghead land after we dump their asses in November.

They must be seized before they can flee and sent to the Hague. They must be tried as war criminals and hanged.

Gasoline and diesel is costing us I think it is $1 billion a year in Iraq to transport our troops. Why aren't we getting the gas and diesel from Iraqi oil fields? We are just getting screwed by cheney and the haliburtons they have installed in Iraq. A billion Dollars would buy a hell of a lot of infrastructure here in the States. What is wrong with these people? Is it unmitigated greed or what?

JohnE, I heard this morning that even with their reduced capacity, the Iraqi's are expected to earn 150 BILLION on their oil sales this year. Not only why are we paying for fuel to wage this occupation, why are we paying for reconstruction in Iraq while Americans are going into foreclosure and bankruptcy?
The insanity of this situation boggles the mind of any sane person.

The Iraqi's have a budget surplus while the Bush administration plunges the poor, broken American taxpayers and their children and grandchildren further and further in debt. And McCain wants to continue these policies? Insanity! Fiscal Insanity!
Total inept management of our government!

LOL, it is good to see I am under Sally's craw really bad this time. Must be the picture of his daughter I send around that has him so heated! Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Can't dispute the stringy hair which has not seen a hair stylist in 10 years, the clothes off a thrift store rack, and those fat hips and thighs. I feel sorry for her though, her father never sent a red cent in support money, so her mother had to clothe her the best she could.

and as usual, he is all wrong again.

Walmart Stores Incorporated, also known as Wal*Mart, was founded by Sam Walton. Sam, and later his family, helped build the store from a single store into the world's largest company (by revenues). Wal*Mart, the corporation, founded Sam's Clubs to compete against the Big Box discounters like Costco and Priceclub that were eating into the company's business. Thus, the business was never acquired, but actually founded by Wal*Mart. The business was named after Sam Walton, but he does not "own" Sam's Club. Sam's Club is a 100% owned subsidiary of Wal*Mart. This makes it a "daughter", not a sister company. Wal*Mart is less than 40% owned by the Walton family, the rest being owned by institutional investors, private investors and management. The Walton family is undeniably still extremely influential given its position on the Board.

sigh, just like with global warming, evolution, etc, he knows absolutely nothing! Yet his narcissism and a mail order certificate makes him think he does!

sorry for the space this one is going to take folks, but
I am going to assume this was posted with a desire to hear answers! I also assume the included facts will be read, so here goes:

1) if the earth is warming how come our winters are colder than ever? They are NOT. You are reading the wrong bullcrap!

( NOTE, #1 city experiencing global warming!!)

57% of Major U.S. Cities Are Seeing Warmer WintersSan Francisco (WeatherBill.com) – Winter is getting warmer for 57 percent of some of the biggest cities
in the United States. That’s the latest finding from the weather risk managers at WeatherBill. The study
highlights temperature changes across 42 states and 130 cities and finds that more than half of the large
cities studied are experiencing an increase in winter temperatures, especially in the Midwest.
In the winter, November through February, 74 of the 130 cities studied show increasing temperatures.
Increases are most prevalent in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and in the Midwest. Eight
Midwestern cities, including Minneapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee and Omaha, show at least a 0.2ºF increase
annually. That equals a 6.0ºF increase over a 30 year period. Cities are experiencing temperature
increases in every United States region except the Pacific
The study uses thirty years of historical data from 130 National Weather Service Stations to determine
winter and summer temperature trends for U.S. cities with a population of at least 100,000
.
WeatherBill published this original study to

Top Five Cities Experiencing Winter Warming Trends

#1 Minneapolis/ St. Paul, MinnesotaAnnual Trend Temperature: 0.2°F
Over 30 Years: 6.4°F
It’s not Minnesota summers that bring in the tourists. Winters are the bread-and-butter for the state.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, temperatures did not rise
above 50°F for more than 140 days in 2001. That’s g ood news for businesses that thrive on snow. But
December 2006 was the fourth warmest December on record for the Twin Cities. NOAA reports the
temperature was 17°F above average the last three w eeks of December, 2006.

(2) if the earth is warming, how come it is cooling? It is NOT cooling! Wrong again!!! Here are some hard cold facts you cannot dispute.

We are now observing real changes due to higher temperatures. Here are some examples:
• The Mt. Kilimanjaro glacier, which has survived the past 11,000 years, is currently at risk of disappearing by 2020 if present rates of melting continue;
• Enormous tracts of Siberian peatlands, with vast stores of carbon, are beginning to thaw and release carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere;
• The Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica has lost volume as large chunks (some as large as the state of Rhode Island) have recently broken free and melted;
• The annual surface area of Arctic sea ice has declined eight percent over the past several decades;
• Large-scale increases in ocean temperatures have been detected over the past 45 years; and
• Plants and animals are changing their habitation ranges, sometimes dramatically, such as robins and mosquitoes in the Arctic that were previously unknown there.

Antarctic ice core records vividly illustrate that atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels today are higher than levels recorded over the past 650,000 years (see figure below). Atmospheric CO2 levels have risen 30 percent in the last 150 years, with half of that rise occurring only in the last three decades. It is a well-established scientific fact that CO2 (and other gases emitted from industrial and agricultural sources) traps heat in the atmosphere, so it is no surprise that we are now witnessing a dramatic increase in temperature.
http://www.ucsusa.org/global_warming/science/hockeystickFAQ.html

(3) if the earth is warming, how come only liberal ass clowns believe the earth is warming? And yes, McCain is a liberl ass clown.
Liberals are NOT the only ones believing this. This is your Paranoia and Fantasy world again. YOU are the only one who does not believe it!
EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY in the world believe this. Every leader, every person, every legitimate group.. The majority of scientists who are worth a plug nickle, including NASA, know that it is warming! SMART people understand that it is
warming.
Look at how many people and groups KNOW this is true!
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070501193009AAdvx4j

(4) if the earth is warming why is that a bad thing, a warming earth would be far better than a cooling earth.

Because it causes flooding and climate changes like we are witnessing now.(hurricanes, tornados, typhoons, etc) It will change the shores of the continents in the USA and cities on the coasts will be gone. Droughts ! loss of coral reefs which are habitats for vital ecosystem for plants, animals, etc.

(5) Why do you want to waste trillions of dollars on an unproven and unprovable theory such as the dopey theory of global frickin warmin?

First of all, it is proven, we just cannot get our government to support it and allow reports that do so to come out, not even from their own government depts. To not do something about this is to invite disaster to the world. It will cost far more in the future if we do nothing about it now.

Wow. Only in Texas, could they let a guy off who shot 2 burglars in the back and killed them for burglarizing the next door neighbor's house!

In my past law classes, the punishment had to fit the crime. thus if you shot someone trying to break into your chicken house, the penalty of death was too great for the crime and you were held in charge of murder.

Texas man cleared of shooting suspected burglars

HOUSTON - Ever since he fatally shot two men he suspected of burglarizing his next-door neighbor's home, 62-year-old Joe Horn has been both praised and vilified for his actions.

Horn called 911 and told the dispatcher he had a shotgun and was going to kill the intruders. The dispatcher pleaded with him not to go outside, but a defiant Horn confronted the men with a 12-gauge shotgun and shot both in the back.
