Return of the Fred
John McCain's folks have a real penchant for sending out all the wrong surrogates. Rudy Giuliani recently attacked Senator Barack Obama's national security credentials despite the fact that John McCain claimed in 2007 that Giuliani doesn't have any national security experience.
In a conference call this morning, the McCain campaign awoke Fred Thompson from his post-campaign slumber to join Giuliani in attacking the presumptive Democratic nominee on Osama bin Laden.
Fred Thompson may be forgetting the positions he took during his failed presidential bid last year:
THOMPSON 2007: Osama bin Laden Is Merely A Symbol. Thompson said that Osama bin Laden is “more symbolism than anything else.” [AP, 9/7/07]THOMPSON 2007: Osama bin Laden Should Get “Due Process.” Thompson said that Osama bin Laden “should get due process if he’s caught.” Thompson also said that catching bin Laden would do little to lessen the threats to the U.S. “You know, that top-dog in Iraq that we killed a while back, you know, that was a great big deal, too. But how much changed after that?” Thompson posited. [AP, 9/10/07]
THOMPSON: Killing Key Figures Doesn’t Change Anything. “Thompson also told reporters during his first presidential campaign swing through this early voting state that removing bin Laden would not end threats to the U.S. Bin Laden ''needs to be located and killed. But we also need to understand that there will be people who can replace him. You know, that top-dog in Iraq that we killed a while back, you know, that was a great big deal, too. But how much changed after that?'' said Thompson, a former Tennessee senator, lawyer and actor. Thompson on Friday told an Iowa crowd that bin Laden ''ought to be caught and killed,'' but on Monday said he wasn't saying those things should happen right after the other. ''No, no, no, we've got due process to go through'' depending on the circumstances, he said. ''I'm not suggesting those things happen simultaneously.''” [AP, 9/10/07]
