John McCain abandons position on affirmative action:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Sunday that he favors a proposed referendum in Arizona that would ban affirmative action, reversing a position he took a decade ago.

It's the latest example of McCain changing positions that had once put him at odds with conservative Republicans, including his new proposals to extend President Bush's tax cuts and expand offshore oil drilling.

In 1998, McCain described an anti-affirmative action effort in his home state as "divisive." On Sunday, McCain backed a proposed amendment to the Arizona Constitution that would ban "preferential treatment" on the basis of "race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin."

The time has come. Asians have a 46% college grad rate according to the 2000 census. So, why do Asians need MORE help?

Most Asians I know do not need more help than whites.

It is whites who are being persecuted. Some are part-Asian, but it is not apparent from their exterior - skin or features.

I'll be darned if I will let part-Asian whites be persecuted without speaking up.

I think this country has a long way to go to eliminate racism and sexism.

I believe every employee should be hired based primarily on their qualifications. In my mind, the real goals of Affirmative Action are to encourage those who hire to solicit applications from a diverse field of applicants and to ensure that those who hire give each applicant the same consideration.

Hiring is not only about qualifications on paper, of course. It's largely about the potential that an employer sees in the person. I think it's important to continue to encourage employers everywhere to give all applicants a fair assessment in this regard and to give applicants reasons to apply for jobs that will challenge them.
