Straight Talk? When it Comes to McCain on Women's Issues, There is Nothing Straight About It

July 10, 2008

The Democratic National Committee issued the following statement from DNC Spokeswoman Karen Finney in response to Senator McCain dodging issues important to women:

"John McCain looked like a deer caught in the headlights when asked about an issue of vital importance to millions of women, that has been a topic of national and Congressional conversation and that he has voted on in the U.S. Senate. John McCain should give women of America a little of his infamous "Straight Talk" instead of pleading memory loss due to the thousands of votes he has cast and dodging a straightforward question about his position.

"This vote was not one of thousands on naming a post office or a federal building - it was on a critical issue for women - one that has received considerable debate and attention. For the record, since he doesn't seem to remember, John McCain voted against requiring health insurance plans to cover prescription birth control while many of these same plans cover drugs like Viagra.

"It's appalling that someone seeking to be President has either not even thought about or is unwilling to discuss such an important issue and the economic impact it has on millions of women. It's a further insult that someone who promises "straight talk" would avoid answering a straightforward question about an issue that is so important to American women. How can we trust John McCain when he won't tell us where he stands and his campaign advisors are willing to mislead us on his record?"
