Jack Cafferty rips McCain a new one....

One after another, McCain's answers were shallow, simplistic, and trite. He showed the same intellectual curiosity that George Bush has -- virtually none.

In Rural New York, Windmills Can Bring Whiff of Corruption

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/18/nyregion/18windmills.html

BURKE, N.Y. — Everywhere that Janet and Ken Tacy looked, the wind companies had been there first.

Dozens of people in their small town had already signed lease options that would allow wind towers on their properties. Two Burke Town Board members had signed private leases even as they negotiated with the companies to establish a zoning law to permit the towers. A third board member, the Tacys said, bragged about the commissions he would earn by selling concrete to build tower bases. And, the Tacys said, when they showed up at a Town Board meeting to complain, they were told to get lost.

“There were a couple of times when they told us to just shut up,” recalled Mr. Tacy, sitting in his kitchen on a recent evening.

Lured by state subsidies and buoyed by high oil prices, the wind industry has arrived in force in upstate New York, promising to bring jobs, tax revenue and cutting-edge energy to the long-struggling region. But in town after town, some residents say, the companies have delivered something else: an epidemic of corruption and intimidation, as they rush to acquire enough land to make the wind farms a reality.

“It really is renewable energy gone wrong,” said the Franklin County district attorney, Derek P. Champagne, who began a criminal inquiry into the Burke Town Board last spring and was quickly inundated with complaints from all over the state about the wind companies. Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo agreed this year to take over the investigation.

“It’s a modern-day gold rush,” Mr. Champagne said.

Mr. Cuomo is investigating whether wind companies improperly influenced local officials to get permission to build wind towers, as well as whether different companies colluded to divide up territory and avoid bidding against one another for the same land.
The industry appears to be shying away from trying to erect the wind farms in more affluent areas downstate, even where the wind is plentiful, like Long Island.
But in the small towns near the Canadian border, families and friendships have been riven by feuds over the lease options, which can be worth tens of thousands of dollars a year in towns where the median household income may hover around $30,000. Rumors circulate about neighbors who can suddenly afford new tractors or trucks. Opponents of the wind towers even say they have received threats; one local activist said that on two occasions, she had found her windshield bashed in.

“My sisters and brothers won’t even talk to me anymore,” said Mr. Tacy, who with his wife has become active in recent years in a network of people who oppose the wind companies. “They tear communities apart.” Opponents of the farms say their scenic views are being marred by the hundreds of wind towers already in place, some of which stand nearly 400 feet tall. They also complain of the irritating hum of spinning turbines and what they say are wasteful public subsidies to wind companies.

But corruption is a major concern. In at least 12 counties, Mr. Champagne said, evidence has surfaced about possible conflicts of interest or improper influence.
In Prattsburgh, N.Y., a Finger Lakes community, the town supervisor cast the deciding vote allowing private land to be condemned to make way for a wind farm there, even after acknowledging that he had accepted real estate commissions on at least one land deal involving the farm’s developer.

A town official in Bellmont, near Burke, took a job with a wind company after helping shepherd through a zoning law to permit and regulate the towers, according to local residents. And in Brandon, N.Y., nearby, the town supervisor told Mr. Champagne that after a meeting during which he proposed a moratorium on wind towers, he had been invited to pick up a gift from the back seat of a wind company representative’s car.
When the supervisor, Michael R. Lawrence, looked inside, according to his complaint to Mr. Champagne, he saw two company polo shirts and a leather pouch that he suspected contained cash.

When Mr. Lawrence asked whether the pouch was part of the gift, the representative replied, “That’s up to you,” according to the complaint.

Last month, Mr. Cuomo subpoenaed two wind companies, Noble Environmental Power, based in Connecticut, and First Wind, based in Massachusetts, seeking a broad range of documents. Both companies say they are cooperating with the attorney general.
“We have no comment on specifics, but we want to be clear: Noble supports open and transparent development of wind projects in accordance with the highest ethical standards,” said Walt Howard, Noble’s chief executive.

The industry’s interest in New York’s North Country is driven by several factors. The area is mostly rural, with thousands of acres of farmland near existing energy transmission lines. Moreover, under a program begun in 2004, the state is entering into contracts to buy renewable energy credits, effectively subsidizing wind power until it can compete against power produced more cheaply from coal or natural gas.

Nine large-scale wind farms housing 451 towers, each with a turbine, are in operation in New York, with at least 840 more towers slated for construction, according to state officials. And in June, Iberdrola S.A., which is based in Spain and is one of the world’s largest energy producers, announced its proposal to invest $2 billion to build hundreds more towers here.

Every day in the North Country during the warm months, trucks pulling giant flatbed trailers rumble down the highways, carrying tower sections and turbine blades. Some residents see the trucks not as a disturbance, but as an omen of jobs, money and cleaner air.

“I feel as a mother, as a grandmother, that the country needs it — not just here,” said Susan Gerow, a Burke resident who has signed easements with Noble worth about $3,000 a year. Like others who have signed deals with the companies, Ms. Gerow and her family will also earn a portion of the revenue from the windmills if they are ever built.
The North Country is a chronically distressed region, and farming is increasingly a profitless enterprise here. The General Motors plant in Massena, for years a reliable source of good jobs, is closing in mid-2009. One of the few bright spots in the local economy in recent decades has been the construction of state prisons, of which there are now five in Franklin County alone.

“You’re talking about a poor farming community out here,” said Brent A. Trombly, a former town supervisor of Ellenburg, which approved a law to allow and establish regulations for the wind towers in 2003. “Our only natural resources are stone and wind.”

For some farmers, he said, the wind leases were their last chance to hold onto land that had been in the family for generations. Supporters also say that the wind towers bring in badly needed tax revenue.

“We see this industry coming, we see the payments coming in,” said William K. Wood, a former Burke Town Board member who also signed a lease option. The school board of Chateaugay, he pointed out, received $332,800 this year from Noble for payments in lieu of taxes, money that the district used to lower school taxes, upgrade its computers and provide a prekindergarten class for the first time.

The local debates over wind power are driven in a part by a vacuum at the state level. There is no state law governing where wind turbines can be built or how big they can be. That leaves it up to town officials, working part time and on advice from outside lawyers, some of whom may have conflicts of their own.

Two Franklin County towns, Brandon and Malone, have passed laws banning the wind turbines. But the issue remains unresolved in Burke, population 1,451, where two Town Board members recused themselves from the issue this year because they had leases with wind companies, leaving the board deadlocked.

At a meeting last month at Burke’s Town Hall, opponents and supporters sat on opposite sides of the aisle, arms crossed. The mood, as it has often been at such meetings, was quietly bitter.

“I’d like to hear what people think,” said Darrel Bushey, the town supervisor and a wind-tower opponent.

“We’ve listened to the people for two years,” responded Timothy Crippen, who sits on the town’s zoning board, which favors permitting the turbines. “It’s time to make a move.”

Some hands shot into the air from the audience, but were ignored.

“There is no decision you are going to make that is going to make everyone happy,” said Craig Dumas, another zoning board member, almost pleading for action.
But the meeting soon broke up, still with no decision made.

“This is a problem for these communities,” Mr. Dumas said as the room emptied.

“There’s a lot of emotion on both sides.”

No no, Kathy...Harpo brings up a good point. We need to work with our Congresspeople to make sure that wind companies get regulated properly, pay their fair share of taxes, and don't unnecessarily use eminent domain to start more land grabs.

That is what you had in mind, wasn't it Harpo? That progressive Democrats need to regulate some more greedy corporations that are trying to dominate our infrastructure again? :)

18
Kathy_from_Indiana on August 19, 2008 at 02:31 PM

Yes GregL... Regulation. First, we needed to regulate the blood thirsty oil companies so that they didn't destroy the globe, and now we need to regulate the wind companies so that they don't get too rich and create too much energy.

Could you imagine if they created all the energy? They would have all the "power"! Get it? Power??

The question that hasn't been asked about the 'cone of silence."

Why has no one asked WHY MCCAIN WAS LATE FOR THE FORUM?

I thought showing up late for a planned event when you have no scheduled events prior is irresponsible. There was absolutely no reason for him to be late to this event.

The only reason for being late that I can think of is to listen in to as much of the questions as possible before arriving.

The blame for this controversy lies squarely on McCain's shoulders and he should answer the question, "Why were you late?"

Speaking of windmills and their abuses...:

Last month, the Magic Valley’s regional Fish and Game supervisor, David Parrish, spoke his mind about how a proposed wind farm might injure wildlife.

Parrish got demoted and transferred to Fish and Game’s headquarters in Boise.
But the real victim is the political independence of Idaho’s wildlife agency and its staffers.

Parrish’s letter to the Twin Falls Times-News questioned how the 185-turbine China Mountain wind farm might damage habitat for “sage grouse, mule deer, antelope and other sagebrush dependent species.”

He ran afoul of three Republican lawmakers — Rep. Stephen Hartgen of Twin Falls, who worked as a consultant on the project; Sen. Bert Brackett of Rogerson, whose nephew owns land on which part of the wind farm could be built; and Assistant House Republican Leader Scott Bedke of Oakley -- who complained to Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter.

Obama gave careful thought to his answers before he replied, unlike McCain who just spit out his usual "I'm a war hero" and the party-line doctrine. I would have thought both candidates would receive the general questions in advance to have time to prepare but, from the pensive manner that Obama displayed, I guess that was not the case. McCain's answers were, however, too quick, too glib and lacking in any real depth.

Hope is what led a band of colonists to rise up against an empire; what led the greatest of generations to free a continent and heal a nation; what led young women and young men to sit at lunch counters and brave fire hoses and march through Selma and Montgomery for freedom's cause. Hope is what led me here today--with a father from Kenya, a mother from Kansas; and a story that could only happen in the United States of America. Hope is the bedrock of this nation; the belief that our destiny will not be written for us, but by us; by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is; who have courage to remake the world as it should be.

You are right, it is all about the money, people earn it and the liberals want to steal it.

Liberals can be accused of many things, but theft is not one. For the most part, they are pacifists, compassionate and empathetic. Relative to the last 8 years of republican fiscal management, when the word "theft" is used in context and as a label, it fit's the conservative party to a tee. A punch drunk, koolaid drinking liberal could have managed this nations finance a whole lot better than the current "gang a theives" have done.

But the theft of our treasury is much worse than just a particular party policy or an illusionary description. Whilst the republican sheeple were asleep, their party found new ways to prison rape their financial security.

What do you call $4.00 bucks for a gallon of gas? Would you call that rape or theft? The republican sheeple run around with their heads up their ass blaming OPEC or hurricanes or bans on off shore drilling and simultaneously their republican president, vice president and senate minions, develop and implement policies that turn public property into private interest and policies that favor their buddies in the both the energy industry and wall street.

If a liberal is going to steal from you at least you get a kiss. With a republican, you better hide your daughters and your twelve year old son. Those sonsabithches won't stop until they've raped not just you, but all those near and dear to you.

Theft?? Thy name is republican.

There are a whole lot of religious people in America, including the majority of Democrats. When we abandon the field of religious discourse—when we ignore the debate about what it means to be a good Christian or Muslim or Jew; when we discuss religion only in the negative sense of where or how it should not be practiced, rather than in the positive sense of what it tells us about our obligations toward one another; when we shy away from religious venues and religious broadcasts because we assume that we will be unwelcome—others will fill the vacuum. And those who do are likely to be those with the most insular views of faith, or who cynically use religion to justify partisan ends.

New Book to buy:

Michael Moore's Election Guide 2008 -- Just Released
By Michael Moore
BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
From an online reviewer:

Michael Moore once again proves he is far and away America's best and brightest political observer with this exceptional offering - brilliantly written, tightly edited and perfectly presented with scalpel sharp humor. Delightfully declarative. Unambiguously incisive. Barry Obama! Read this book!

From the publisher:

After a diastrous war, the failure to catch bin Laden, millions of families who have lost their homes, the Katrina debacle, soaring gas prices feeding record oil company profits, and the largest national debt caused by the biggest spending and borrowing administration in American history, the country has had it with conservatives, right-wingers and Republicans. A thrilling election season is now upon us. Obama vs. McCain. One candidate has promised a presidency different from any other, one that will take us forward to embrace the hope of the 21st century. The other candidate says he has no idea how to use a computer.

Welcome to MIKE'S ELECTION GUIDE -- Michael Moore's effort to make sense of this fall's race for the White House and Congress. In it, Moore answers the nation's most pressing questions: "Why is John McCain so angry?," "Do the Democrats Still Drink from a Sippy Cup and Sleep with the Light On?," Can I get into the Electoral College with only a 2.0 gpa?" and "How many Democrats does it take to lose the most winnable election in American history?"

It's a great year to be an American and a voter. Don't miss out on all the fun! And don't miss out on MIKE'S ELECTION GUIDE -- it's the indispensable voice that belongs in every American's ear this season.

I'm hoping for Richardson (too 'ethnic', I regret to say) or Wes Clark, (and all this "leaked" press about Obama telling him there is no place for him at the convention is just an elaborate smoke screen). The meetings with Biden and Richardson this week could also be to firm up his Cabinet for the Saturday "Here we are" extravaganza in Springfield. Kind of like "Meet the A-Team!"

He could roll out his entire list of Cabinet nominees in person, and they could ALL be surrogates for separate facets of the campaign. For instance "Richardson or Biden could hold town halls on foreign policy and be speaking as the prospective Secretary of State.

Gore could be out there doing the same thing for Interior, Daschell for Energy, Hillary for HHS, Kucininh for Housingf and Urban Development, etc.

That way he could concentrate on all the nuts and bolts of the campaign and let the surrogates get the message out ahead of time.

Why do we have to reveal who Obama's VP choice is before the convention starts? I'd like to save something to keep the media whores in heat.

McCain's clip would be:

Abraham Lincoln, whom most scholarly surveys rate as the nation's greatest president, had no training to be the commander in chief and almost no Washington experience. He served eight years in the Illinois legislature and two in the U.S. House of Representatives, and had been out of office for nearly 12 years before he won the presidency in 1860 with 39.9 percent of the vote.

Did you hear that story on CNN where some school in Texas is allowing teachers to carry guns. Boy, I'd hate to flunk a spelling test in that classroom.

Seriously, why in the world would any teacher want to carry a gun that could be taken away from him/her and used against all the rest of the kids, as well as the teacher?

The school board obviously doesn't believe that the parents of the first innocent student killed won't sue for damages?

I wonder how the taxpayers will feel when they have to pay damages not to mention the increased insurance costs?

I bet somebody on that school board sells insurance.

This is the big quandry with Guns! People think they will protect themselves, and when it comes down to it, the burglary, or rapist or whatever takes the gun away and kills them with it!

THIS is why the airlines refused to let pilots or airline personnel carry on guns!!!

THEN you have weapons on board, so the terrorist just marches on, holds something to the neck of a kid on board, and the pilot gives over the gun!

Why don't these people think of this? Like these teachers are all some kind of cowboys or something! How stupid......

Hey Blue, it's nice to play that card. The only reason Libs like you don't ever fight this point is because conservatives never elect a green candidate....never. And if we did, you would be screaming and crying about the lack of experience.

The reason the DNC elects unqualified politicians is because all of the DNC voter's decisions are based on a "gut feeling" of some passionate speaker who looks pretty good on TV. It's fine that you are "intellectually curious" and it would seem that your writing skills are ok; but at the end of the day, you are a typical liberal that sounds good but all of your actions yield poor results. People who complain that Barack Obama lacks experience must be unaware of his legislative achievements. One reason these accomplishments are unfamiliar is that the media have not devoted enough attention to Obama's bills and the effort required to pass them, ignoring impressive, hard evidence of his character and ability.

Consider a bill into which Obama clearly put his heart and soul. The problem he wanted to address was that too many confessions, rather than being voluntary, were coerced -- by beating the daylights out of the accused.

Obama proved persuasive enough that the bill passed both houses of the legislature, the Senate by an incredible 35 to 0. Then he talked Blagojevich into signing the bill, making Illinois the first state to require such videotaping.

Obama didn't stop there. He played a major role in passing many other bills, including the state's first earned-income tax credit to help the working poor and the first ethics and campaign finance law in 25 years (a law a Post story said made Illinois "one of the best in the nation on campaign finance disclosure"). Obama's commitment to ethics continued in the U.S. Senate, where he co-authored the new lobbying reform law that, among its hard-to-sell provisions, requires lawmakers to disclose the names of lobbyists who "bundle" contributions for them.

Taken together, these accomplishments demonstrate that Obama has what Dillard, the Republican state senator, calls a "unique" ability "to deal with extremely complex issues, to reach across the aisle and to deal with diverse people." In other words, Obama's campaign claim that he can persuade us to rise above what divides us is not just rhetoric.

Posted by francespryor on August 19, 2008 at 02:55 PM

McCain was answering the questions based on his core beliefs so the questions were easy for him. Obama has to hem and haw because if he answered those questions based on his core beliefs he would be laughed off the stage. Liberals cannot state their beliefs because the American electorate would see those beliefs as foolish and silly.

85
Sally-* on August 19, 2008 at 04:26 PM

Bill Schneider did it again just now on CNN. He said that Obama was underperfoming on the foreign policy front.

Why? Because 12% more Americans say they want a Democratic President than Obama is polling individually.

Let's just put aside the obvious apples and oranges logic of Scheider's argument. Why does he assume that McCain inspires such confidence? He's the one always behind in Schneider's own poll.

Could that difference in the Democratic numbers and Obama be accounted for by say his youth, race, or other personal or policy reason?

No, Schneider says it's because of Georgia. McCain, who can't even pronounce his dear friend's name, acted decisively last week...even though he had to come back later toning down all his previous panicked remarks.

The White House (and just about every other world government) pointed out that McCain was infaming an already crisis situation...and he wasn't president yet so he should shut up.

If Americans have so much trust in McCain's foreign policiy credentials, why isn't he polling 12 points higher than he was before the Georgian invasion?

Just like the "success" of the Surge, McCain's numbers just go up and down...and always settle below Obama's. That's underperforming on Obama's part?

Our Energy Crisis

With the cost of gasoline balancing near 4 dollars a gallon it is no surprise to find Americans looking for a quick solution, no matter how remote or unlikely. And this is why John McCain makes advances on the promise to open coastal areas to oil exploration.

Given this reality, I ask, "Is it absolutely necessary for our candidate to be seen as a barrier to near offshore drilling?"

Before you think any further on this issue consider the extreme unlikelihood that near offshore drilling with take place before efforts can be made to reduce our overall dependency on oil thus making near offshore drilling obsolete before it begins. Of course I am refering to the freeing up of oil resources by the upcoming expansion of renewable energy sources. As these renewables, Solar, Wind, Hydro-electric, and Nuclear, replace oil as the energy source of choice for industry, current oil supplies will significantly drive down the cost of gasoline.

To reiterate my point. Barrack Obama need not lose votes to John McCain on the Energy Crisis. In fact, following the adjustment of this key difference, John McCain can be intensely targetted for the role he's played in allowing this to become a crisis to begin with.

The fact is, John McCain has stood beside Dick Cheney for nearly eight years, as he not only failed to improve our energy situation but made it significatnly worse.

I suggest that this is the case for two reasons. First, we know from Dick Cheney himself that he used his connections within the Energy Industry for some purpose. He met with industry leaders frequently in the early years of the Bush administration. Second, because it is simply does not make sense that Dick Cheney, with the help of these Energy moguls, would not have accomplished some task, given the effort put forth.

At least one task accomplished was the deregulation of oil trade. This one act is said by many economists to have been directly responsible for 50% or more of our fuel cost increases.

John McCain refuses to address this issue. He either changes the subject when challenged on it, or else quickly dismisses the question as if it were posed by uninformed parties, not economists who make it their business to study such topics more closely than a politician like John McCain can afford, given all the other aspects of governing that must be considered.

We must level the playing field. Eliminate the appearance of an advantage on the part of John McCain by making it abundantly clear that this man is partly responsible for an energy crisis that has developed under the leadership of politicians like him.

Ensure Americans that they will not get just another politician in Barrack Obama. Let them instead know that a leader goes by that name, a leader who will organize the effort to significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Democrat Barack Obama challenged his Republican opponent John McCain on Tuesday to stop questioning his "character and patriotism."

"Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country," Obama said to applause.

Oh right - you go Obama - tell that crinkly old man to shut the he** up...

95
Kathy_from_Indiana on August 19, 2008 at 04:41 PM

Obama went on:

I stand before you today at a defining moment in our history. We are in the midst of two wars. The terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 are still at large. Russia has invaded the sovereign nation of Georgia. Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons. The next Commander-in-Chief is going to have to exercise the best possible judgment in getting us through these difficult times.

Yesterday, Senator McCain came before you. He is a man who has served this nation honorably, and he correctly stated that one of the chief criteria for the American people in this election is going to be who can exercise the best judgment as Commander in Chief. But instead of just offering policy answers, he turned to a typical laundry list of political attacks. He said that I have changed my position on Iraq when I have not. He said that I am for a path of "retreat and failure." And he declared, "Behind all of these claims and positions by Senator Obama lies the ambition to be president" -- suggesting, as he has so many times, that I put personal ambition before my country.

That is John McCain's prerogative. He can run that kind of campaign, and -- frankly -- that's how political campaigns have been run in recent years. But I believe the American people are better than that. I believe that this defining moment demands something more of us.

I'm loving this man - he sure runs circles around McNuts.

Blue,

The trolls forget that experience is measured by the things you have accomplished. McCain voted with Bush 95% of the time. That's the experience we all want repeated?

McCain has also stabbed every Republican in the back he could reach. He'll do it again, too, if they give him the chance.

Obama has worked with Republicans to pass legislation both in Illinois and in the Senate. That is the kind of experience that creates progress not phony sensational headlines.

The few bills McCain reached across the aisle to help pass he's now rejected such as his opposition to tax cuts for the rich and campaign finance.

McCain also has a reputation for being rash, yielding a nasty temper, and using foul language when he doesn't get his way. The only thing that saves Cindy is that her father made sure McCain wouldn't get a nickle if he abused her.

McCain is a nasty old man who lies and double crosses anyone to get what he wants. And what he wants is to further his own glory...not to solve any problems.

McCain is just like Bush. It's startling how much they are alike and how hastily and stupid they act when confronted with any problem.

Obama surprises me all the time with how calm and confidently he handles a challenge. It's a sign of maturity that few Republicans ever show. McCain and Cheney in particular are always threatening others and kicking dogs for no reason at all.

Kathy can't debate for 2 reasons: 1. She is on the wrong side of logic. Her thoughts and actions "feel" right, and she comes here to make herself "feel better" about her faulty thinking. Any attempt by a "troll" to undermine her obvious effort to mask her idiocy results in a "Don't feed the Trolls" post. This is because; #2 She is a woman. Although many women like confrontation with men, in a blind post like this where she can not use her womenly figure to distract me, her pea brain doesn't have a chance to my superior intellect.

I believe that he will accomplish what he says when it comes to lowering taxes for the middle class and working poor, creating universal health care, getting our troops out of Iraq, and eliminating no-bid war profiteering contracts.

Then he can start eliminating the abuses of globalization, wastful privatization, and irresponsible deregulation.

THIS is why the airlines refused to let pilots or airline personnel carry on guns!!!
THEN you have weapons on board, so the terrorist just marches on, holds something to the neck of a kid on board, and the pilot gives over the gun!
Posted by PamB

They don't allow pilots and stewardesses to carry guns because firing guns on an pressurized aircraft would reek havoc with cabin pressure especially if someone shot into a window.

They do allow some pilots and airline service stewardesses to carry tasers which will do the job just fine.

Why don't these people think of this? How stupid......

Nobody (and I mean nobody in the MSM) is talking about this today. Why not?

Wholesale Prices Jumped in July By MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM Published: August 19, 2008

Wholesale prices rose at a higher annual rate last month than they had in 27 years, making it more difficult for businesses to maintain profit margins as consumer spending declines. The combination of trends also underscored the pressures on the Federal Reserve as it considers whether to raise interest rates to fight inflation or lower them to stimulate growth.

“Hot inflation and cool housing leaves the F.O.M.C. stuck in neutral for now,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Bank, in a note, referring to the Federal Open Market Committee, the central bank’s policy-making body.

The 1.2 percent rise in wholesale prices, reported on Tuesday by the Labor Department, was well above economists’ expectations and the latest report showing a sharp rise in inflation in July. Some of the higher prices have tapered off because of the recent decline in crude oil prices.

But American businesses and consumers, along with central bankers, are facing an increasingly difficult situation. Businesses can raise retail prices and risk losing customers who are already squeezed by the downturn. Or they can eat the cost of more expensive goods and lose profits...

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
As Delaware Sen. Joe Biden left his home a few minutes ago, golf clubs in tow, he was asked where he was going to be on Saturday.

Biden replied, "Here" and pointed down to his driveway.

As he pulled out of the driveway in the driver's seat of his car he then said to the press gathered near his gate, "You guys have better things to do. I'm not the guy."

I finally figured out what McCain's publicity stunt today reminded me of....The Mission Accomplished Sign ceremony.

Yes, there was McBush standing out at sea assuring us that off shore drilling can't fail...with oil executives giving each other high 5s off camera? It was mission accomplished time for the Bush Oil Cartel and their multinational clients.

Declare that you are right and do it with a dramatic backdrop and how can anyone dare to question your judgment or be impressed?

Well, maybe we've all seen a little too much of this bravado and not enough achievement in the last eight years? It's the same old song and dance and it's getting old.

Why must Oil must be pumped at all cost and we consumers must continue to pump windfall profits into the pockets of McBush's cronnies?

Heaven forbid that we abandon oil for cleaner more efficient forms of fuel that don't make us victims of wild speculation and the whims of oil executives and shieks.

McCain looked like a fool today and that's just who he thinks we voters are, too.

"...some 7,000 miles away another president violates the constitution and breaks both statutory and international law on torture, secret prisons, rendition, illegal detention, wiretaps, and on and on. But of course in this other democracy the constitution is an historical artifact held under special glass in the vacuum of a special gas, something to be worshiped from a distance while violated daily. And the legislature? They favor false stability over all things. And when the party in opposition recently gained a majority, they immediately announced that impeachment was 'off the table'.

In a nation of precedent this means that every president from now on can feel free to violate the constitution at will. He or she can go to war on a whim, or lies. She may order her subordinates to torture, to break any law with impunity, and be sure that she is protected by precedent.

In the US democracy is a word that we throw out to justify armed invasions and illegal violations of international law. It has no intrinsic meaning. In Pakistan democracy is thriving and alive. It marched in the streets. It spoke in the courts. It rang in the actions of its parliament, demanding impeachment.

Americans have much to learn from them."

Large U.S. bank collapse ahead, says ex-IMF economist

By Jan Dahinten

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The worst of the global financial crisis is yet to come and a large U.S. bank will fail in the next few months as the world's biggest economy hits further troubles, former IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff said on Tuesday.

"The U.S. is not out of the woods. I think the financial crisis is at the halfway point, perhaps. I would even go further to say 'the worst is to come'," he told a financial conference.

"We're not just going to see mid-sized banks go under in the next few months, we're going to see a whopper, we're going to see a big one, one of the big investment banks or big banks," said Rogoff, who is an economics professor at Harvard University and was the International Monetary Fund's chief economist from 2001 to 2004...

Johne,

That's just like when Bush allowed the Chinese to capture one of our fighter jets back in 2000.

A Chinese top gun outsmarted one of our hot shot pilots into ditching without destroying his plane. (He must have been a student of the George W. Bush School of Flight...McCain being a charter member no doubt?)

The Chinese recovered the plane and tore it apart throughly learning all our latest technology. After about six months, they gave it back to Bush...in boxes.

I can envision Putin taking out all the technology and then melting those tanks down and presenting them to Bush as trophies to decorate The Ranch when he retires...each holding a single serving of Chicken Kiev inside.

I venture to guess that Bush hasn't seen the last of Putin kicking in around before he leaves Washington.

Don't you sense something very personal about this Russian retaliation? They are taking their good old time getting out and twisting the knife even deeper every time they find a reason to stall a little longer.

This doesn't bode well for either Obama or McCain. One of them is going to have to salvage NATO from a very angry and growing revolt among the Europeans. Bush the Destroyer has become Bush the Incompetent.

rice is surely a bitch. She is acting like she is presidunce just like mcahole is acting. Why do we let these people strut around the world threatening other nations? This shit must stop.

"US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on her way to an emergency NATO foreign minister meeting on the crisis in South Ossetia and Georgia that the alliance would “punish Russia for its invasion of Georgia.” Western sources believe that Ms. Rice was talking about a suspension of defense cooperation. Russian experts say that Georgia is a uniting factor for NATO, and the alliance can stand up against Russia in a cohesive way.

If NATO punishes Russia, Russia will punish NATO back
If NATO punishes Russia, Russia will punish NATO back

Rice also said that Russia “was playing a very dangerous game” with the USA and its allies. The Secretary of State emphasized that the United States would not allow Moscow to win in Georgia, destabilize Europe and draw a new Iron Curtain through the continent.

Russian experts believe that there can be only one positive outcome of the emergency NATO meeting for Russia. France, Italy, Slovakia, Turkey and several other countries interested in maintaining stable and normal relations with Russia may block the anti-Russian resolution.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. bush is obviously going to fail miserably again. It is predicted that NATO will tell bush to stuff it.
In fact I read where Turkey refused to let O.S. warships into the black sea. NATO may already be falling apart. Will this be another colossal bush utter failure? If NATO pulls out of Afghanistan we will be faced with another colossal bush utter failure. Pakistan may even quit cooperating with the U.S. Will this be yet again another colossal bush utter failure?

This outcome, no matter how weak it may seem, would become a serious defeat for the diplomacy of the incumbent US administration. However, NATO’s spokeswoman Carmen Romero said that all the ministers of the alliance would make a clear statement of Georgia’s support.

If NATO punishes Russia, Russia will punish NATO back

It's amazing that you criticize the USA for being evil empire and here you have Russia slowly but sure taking over a small free country. Not with guns per se, but with internal force. You side with the largest most oppressive government since early China and you defend them. Gorbachev won the Nobel Prize alright, but that just shows you what a joke the Nobel Prize is.

Johne is a communist. He freely admits it on here. He speaks Russian like he was born in Moscow and daily quotes from his favorite News source Pravda. He really could care less who wins the next election as long as during their administration things get worse for America.

He's backing Obama because the odds are better for a closer-to-the-red-line shift.

I think that Georgia is playing bush like the country in the movie "The Mouse That Roared".

In this film the world's smallest country, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, keeps its economy afloat by exporting vintage wine to America. When the state of California bottles a cheaper version, bankruptcy looms for the tiny Duchy … so it decides to wage war against America.

Could Georgia be playing dumbass george the same way by starting a war with Russia then asking for foreign aid from the U.S. Is bush that stupid?

It is obvious that there is an unequal distribution of oil in the world. Some how the Middle East has cheated the rest of the world out of its oil. The world needs to impose a windfall oil tax on the Middle East. They did nothing to earn their oil reserves. They obviously have more than they need. We need to redistribute this oil to other less fortunate countries. Its just not fair. The widening gap between the oil haves and the oil have-nots.

Our skirts aren't clean either. We followed a pattern of imperialism very similar to the British, French, Spanish, Dutch, etal, and we are still following it today under bush and cheney.

We seized the lands of Native Americans.

In 1848 we declared war on Mexico and seized California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.

In 1898 we seized the Phillipines, Puerto Rico and Cuba after staging an explosion aboard the battleship Maine in Havana Harbor.

bush faked a war with Iraq so he could seize their oil.

bush is faking a planned was with Iran so he can steal their oil.

At least Russia stopped seizing foreign lands. They got an early star under the Tsars. They seized Alaska and northern California.

We need to examine our souls and fess up to our imperialism. The modern day imperialism it seems involves oil and other natural resources.

If Bush hadn't insisting that NATO include all those new "democracies" run by dictators, overextened our miltarily, disgraced us intenationally, and ignored Russia's constant warnings, this could have been negotiated before it got out of hand.

I suppose diplomacy is just too much hard work for a bunch of lazy GOP theives with delusions of grandure.

The clown prince and Ratsputin should have stuck to outsourcing and importing cheap foreign labor. They certainly can't handle economics or foreign affairs...or a reliable source of oil even with them being oil men.

If you really want to see just how much worse it can get just let McBush and Lieberman take over from Pinky and The Brain. Jesus might just have to stage His Second Coming a little early just to insure they don't screw up it up.

They all have all the talent and we’re all so lame. There is an unequal distribution of talent in the world today and it must stop. Why does U2 gets paid millions to play while I must punch the clock? Why should I suffer in the middle class while Spielburg plays make believe? Its the unequal distribution of talent. The unequal distribution of passion and ability. I want mine so lets take from them. They are no better than I and I work harder than them. They didn’t earn it. So gimme some of their talent. Lets take it from them.

And were is the reporting on McClame's infidelity to his wife? Is that not something important the American people should know about? The man is running on the "family values" ticket and he cheated on his wife who was very loyal and waited for him to return from Viet Nam. She was in a car accident while he was gone. He comes home and dumps her for a younger woman who, by-the-way, happens to be rich. He had an affair with the new one before he was divorced from the old crippled one. God I was out today and ran into a full fledge republican Factno The most surprising thing is that the republicans have convinced these factno's that the reason the american companies left and went to china is because the US taxes are too high. They are buying this crap and using it as a justification for the economy mess.

Isn't that unbelieveble. If they had any education, ability, or desire to question the sense in this they would figure out, that they are still american companies operating in china. These american companies pay US taxes. These american companies left america, but still pay US taxes. So that can't be the reason they left. If the republicans believe that competing with a communist country that pays $1.50 an hour is free markets, then I suggest they get ready to make $1.50 an hour to compete. The reason they left is cheap foriegn labor. Another reason is healthcare, they don't pay the commies healthcare, (they probably have a commie healthcare system) Taxes had nothing to do with it. CHStuart and those that use this speal on dems out in public, save it for a moron, like yourselves, who feel sorry for the CEO's making 40 million a year and paying a less percentage in tax that their childs teacher.

Obama is boring, McCain is more boring, either way I'm to bored to choose them. I voted for Hillary and it was taken away from her. Obama's only chance is choosing the right VP. I don't know why people vote for the a first African American and not the first woman. I wish people would care. Religion is corrupt, politicians are corrupt, corruption is everywhere. McCain's pro life people are so pro life they forget their own beliefs, if the babies lives did begin at conception than if they die than technically they would go to heaven,or do they think all the babies are going to hell. This world is psychotic. Why does health care cost money, why does a funeral cost money, why are bibles so important, why are all politicians for themselves instead of for the people, why do the green people support new ways to get energy but then protest when they try to make it possible. Why is money so valuable? The religions care about it, obviously or the churches wouldn't be so elegant. Sorry people, I'm out of ideas.

Cognitive Dissonance

By UK Professor Emeritus of Biogeography Philip Stott of the University of London

I must ask a very serious and urgent question of our media. Why do you continue to talk glibly about current climate ‘warming’ when it is now widely acknowledged that there has been no ‘global warming’ for the last ten years, a cooling trend that many think may continue for at least another ten years? How can you talk of the climate ‘warming’ when, on the key measures, it isn’t? And now a leading Mexican scientist is even predicting that we may enter another ‘Little Ice Age’ - a ‘pequea era de hielo’.

Such media behaviour exhibits a classic condition known as ‘cognitive dissonance’. This is experienced when belief in a grand narrative persists blindly even when the facts in the real world begin to contradict what the narrative is saying. Sadly, our media have come to have a vested interest in ‘global warming’, as have so many politicians and activists. They are terrified that the public may begin to question everything if climate is acknowledged, on air and in the press, not to be playing ball with their pet trope.

But that is precisely what is happening. Since 1998, according to all the main world temperature records, including the UK Met Office’s ‘HadCRUT3’ data set [a globally-gridded product of near-surface temperatures consisting of annual differences from 1961-90 normals], the world average surface temperature has exhibited no warming whatsoever. Indeed, the trend has been a combination of flat-lining and cooling, with a particularly marked plunge over the last few months. Many parts of the world, including Canada, China, and the US, have just experienced their worst winter in years (as is currently Australia), while skiing in Scotland has benefited from the trend, and the summit of Snowdon carried snow even up to the end of April.

To put it simply, since 1998, there has been no ‘global warming’, despite the fact that, during this same period, atmospheric CO2 has continued to rise, from c. 368 ppm by volume in 1998 to c. 384 ppmv in November, 2007. Moreover, another ‘greenhouse gas’, methane, has also been rising, following a period of relative stability, by about 0.5% between 2006 and 2007.

The big question is: “What has happened to Solar Cycle 24?” Solar-cycle intensity is measured by the maximum number of sunspots. These are dark blotches on the Sun that mark areas of heightened magnetic activity. The more sunspots there are, the more likely it is that major solar storms will occur, and these are related to warming on Earth; the fewer the sunspots, the more likely there is to be cooling. The next 11-year cycle of solar storms [Solar Cycle 24] was predicted to have begun in autumn, 2006, but it appears to have been delayed. It was then expected to take off in March last year, and to peak in late-2011, or mid-2012. But the Sun remains largely spotless, except for an odd fading spot. This delayed onset has somewhat confused the official Solar Cycle 24 Prediction Panel, leaving them evenly split as to whether a weak or a strong period of solar storms now lies ahead.

However, some other scientists are deeply concerned, including Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become a NASA astronaut, who comments: “Disconcerting as it may be to true believers in global warming, the average temperature on Earth has remained steady or slowly declined during the past decade, despite the continued increase in the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, and now the global temperature is falling precipitously.”

Chapman then explains why the absence of sunspots might exacerbate this cooling trend: “The reason this matters is that there is a close correlation between variations in the sunspot cycle and Earth’s climate. The previous time a cycle was delayed like this was in the Dalton Minimum, an especially cold period that lasted several decades from 1790. Northern winters became ferocious: in particular, the rout of Napoleon’s Grand Army during the retreat from Moscow in 1812 [see picture] was at least partly due to the lack of sunspots.”

New Zealand Ski Resorts See ‘Largest Snow Base Ever’

New Zealand Herald

Mt Ruapehu is claiming the biggest snow base ever recorded for a New Zealand skifield with over 4.5m of snow on the ground. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, operator of Mt Ruapehu ski area, was celebrating what it called a major milestone today. The snow measuring stake at Turoa previously only stood at 380cm so had to be extended to measure today’s 455cm snow base.

The Whakapapa side of the mountain also had 350cm of snow, the biggest since 1995. Mt Ruapehu marketing manager Mike Smith said the record-breaking snow base would be paradise for skiers and boarders, and with such large bases the season could potentially keep going into November. Staff at Ruapehu’s ski fields have been kept busy looking out for avalanche risks and working to dig many of their lifts and buildings out, straining under the weight of huge snowfalls.

image

But while the North Island field was claiming the record, southern skifield Cardrona, near Queenstown, was proclaiming the quality, not quantity, of its snow. Geoff Wayatt, who runs the snow safety and ski patrol for Cardrona, said the snow measured 78cm at the base and about 110cm at the top station. The weather patterns meant that the more northern fields could receive bigger snow falls, he said. “They have got great terrain, we have got better snow. The further south you go the colder it gets and the better the snow quality.” Mt Hutt reported a 267cm snow base.

Dunedin and Christchurch residents woke to snow this morning as sleety showers moved north. Meanwhile in Canterbury, a further 3 to 5cm was expected to hit the Port Hills and the Banks Peninsula where the Christchurch City Council has reported roads closed.

Keith Olbermann's Ugly Rant Against Condi Rice

In the equation which makes up the odious, criminal and murderous Bush regime and its murderous, criminal and odious foreign policy, the constant factor is constituted by a teacher, promoted to positions way above her personal and intellectual station by a gullible fool of a President. This teacher, whose sheer incompetence as National Security Advisor and as Secretary of State is today so blatantly apparent, goes by the name of Condoleeza Rice.

The fact that Rice was National Security Advisor at the time of 9/11 speaks for itself, period.

As Secretary of State, she is supposed to be responsible for her country’s diplomacy, she is supposed to be Washington’s leading diplomat. But can anyone think of a figure less qualified for the post? Starting with the face (set in a constant snarl, with a scar for a mouth, lips pursed back in a sneer, piggy eyes looking as though something evil is lunging behind them), continuing with the body language (aggressive stance, butch, defensive posture as though she is hiding something or afraid) and ending with the discourse (about as diplomatic as a raspberry and a fit of giggling at a funeral ceremony), she cuts a sorry figure.

The constant arrogance and hypocrisy of this failed female makes it that much more apparent that here is a person way out of her depth. Instead of regarding sensitive issues from a balanced viewpoint as she is supposed to do, this incompetent loud-mouthed, bad-mannered, bullshit-mongering bimbo takes one side, ignores the other and then speaks down from a holier-than-thou platform as if she were on a lecture dias.

This is not a classroom, Condoleeza Rice, and you are not a diplomat. You are a liar, a cheap, shallow, failed, wannabe actress on the diplomatic stage. This is the real world and out here, you have to be prepared to face up to your responsibilities.

Oh, I'm sorry, that wasn't Keith Olbermann, that was Pravda.

The difference? Pravda doesn't say "Sir," as "Sir" reinforces class distinctions.

There's not a bit of that whole blame America/blame Georgia schpiel that wasn't previewed in Russia's AAA franchise, the American leftist press.

Isn't it a terribly odd thing that the American left always winds up coincidentally lining up cheek-by-jowl with their Russian friends?

Their ultra right-wing nationalist Russian friends like Vladimir Putin, I should say.

Highest foreclosures are in California, Florida, and Ohio, the difference for Ohio is the winter. Food, shelter, heat, water, phone bills are more expensive and more homeless people will suffer in a freezing climate out of work with no medical coverage.
This is going to be a tuff winter folks. So much for the slap on the back at Timken Steel in Canton and then the lay offs. So much for Coingate. It's like looking out over Hickory Flats Golf Course in February after a week of snow and some guy assuring you that it will be 75 degrees out there in a few days.
Yeah, sure buddy...as you line your pockets and the bills keep coming in and they cut down on school busses and free lunches for the poor cold children, and what's that you been smokin and drinkin anyway???

I know, you're all shocked. It's like the sun actually rises in the East. That's how crazy this revelation is. Well, Don Surber was able to ferret out this little nugget of fantastic-ness from back in 2001:

On the Illinois Senate floor, Obama was the only senator to speak against the baby-protecting bills. He voted "present" on each, effectively the same as a "no."

"Number one," said Obama, explaining his reluctance to protect born infants, "whenever we define a pre-viable fetus as a person that is protected by the Equal Protection Clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we're really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a -- a child, a 9-month old -- child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place. I mean, it -- it would essentially bar abortions, because the Equal Protection Clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an anti-abortion statute."

If only Obama had the same proficiency at lying as Bill Clinton, he'd be having no problems here. It's a shame for him, isn't it? And let's not even get started on courage. He may be filled with all the hope-changeyness in the universe, but this guy has got about as much spine as a jellyfish.

Of course, this is irrelevant, right? The real issue here is that McCain cheated, and poor little Obama wasn't given the same opportunity to prepare. If only he'd been able to study beforehand and start preparing answers. Unfortunately, he was too busy catching some killer waves in Hawaii to bother.

In all seriousness though, I think that this just proves my earlier thesis. He's terrified to let Americans know where he really stands on controversial issues. So he's desperately trying to remain as vapid and ambiguous as possible. And of course, the question was not easy to answer. But he's a constitutional scholar, for crying out loud. He's a Senator running to be President. In his job as a Senator, he should be able to make tough decisions like this. No one said being President would be easy, and that once you're inaugurated you'd suddenly mysteriously have all the answers. But you do have to take a stance, and make a decision, and be able to live with the fact that it will sometimes be the wrong one. Can the Obamamessiah handle that? My guess is no, he can't. He's bought into the hype already. As far as he's concerned, he is the Anointed One here to save us all. He can't give a wrong answer. So when people start questioning the things he says and does, he is completely flabbergasted by it. I almost feel bad for the guy... he's been surrounded by too many "yes" people.

In any case, if Obama thinks that he'll be able to make it through this entire election without anyone finding out about his radical liberal positions, he's dead wrong. He got into the wrong profession if he didn't want to have to deal with this kind of stuff. It's just the way it goes. Yes, every vote you record in the Senate can possibly be held against you in the future. Yes, everything you say will be picked apart and analyzed. And why shouldn't it be? You want to be the guy who will decide which direction this country will go in for the next four years. Americans have a right to know where you stand. They can agree or disagree... but they have a right to know.

And Obama, you owe us that much. Is honestly and enough backbone to be willing to stand up and say, "This is what I believe in", too much to ask from you? It certainly seems so.

Obama's "No Child Left Alive" Policy

According to Freddoso's research (along with that of the Springfield, Illinois chapter of the National Right to Life Committee), Obama voted against a bill that came before his committee in the Illinois state senate in 2003 that would simply have declared that any baby who survived an abortion attempt, and was accidentally born alive instead, shall be considered a human person with all the rights of any other baby born alive. The bill was in response to Chicago hospitals that were taking second shots at such improperly born children, making sure the "procedure" was successful, no matter how many times it took -- and no matter whether the abortion was finished before or after live birth.

But now he has realized that this vote may come back to haunt him in his quest for the presidency... so he's brazenly lying, claiming the bill was instead an attempt to overturn Roe v. Wade.

What makes this even more flagrant (and vile) is that the bill included language -- which Obama and every state senator on the committee, unanimously inserted -- explicitly avowing that it only affected the rights of babies that had actually been born alive and would have no impact whatsoever on foetuses still in the womb.

It would not even have forbidden partial-birth abortion,
since the body of the bill explicitly defined a live birth as "the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of that member [of the species homo sapiens];" as partial-birth abortion means an incomplete extraction (as the name implies), its legality would not have been affected by this bill.

(What it would have affected is a botched partial-birth abortion, where the doctor accidentally delivers the entire baby, rather than everything but the head. It would have prevented hospitals from picking up the fully born baby and continuing with the "procedure" -- prying open the infant's skull and sucking out her brains with a vacuum.)

I really want John S. McCain and the GOP to jump on this: It's so obviously mendacious a denial, about an issue that is so fundamentally repulsive to real Americans -- letting living, born babies die of exposure in order to punish them for surviving an abortion attempt -- that I cannot see how he can weasel his way out of it.

And please bear in mind... I am pro-choice on abortion up to about two-thirds of the way through pregnancy. Nevertheless, I am not pro-choice on infanticide, which is what this bill was designed to prevent. And there is no way anybody living in a civilized culture (anybody but a lunatic liberal) can justify killing a post-born infant by deliberate neglect (starvation, dehydration, cold)... just because the mother originally wanted it removed from her womb.

All right; it's out. Why must they slay it as well?

Obama's policy itself is murderous, and his vain attempt to lie his way out of it deeply offends my intelligence and shocks my conscience.

249
Sally-* on August 20, 2008 at 04:53 AM

The bill was to ban the practice of killing or allow to die, babies who survived late term abortions. Obama was the only state Senator to speak up against the bill. The bill passed with no no votes.

It isn't even about the mothers body, the baby is born - the mother is out of the picture. What purpose does it serve to kill the baby or allow it to die?

After being the only Senator to speak out against the bill Hussein Obama voted "present". What a coward - what a moron.

That will kill the Obama run, which is dying daily anyway. He cannot survive supporting such barbarism.

rice is surely a bitch.

Irregardless of what anyone's position is or is not on abortion, if this country does not survive, it will not matter. McCain's only answer to any foreign policy question is, "Bomb the hell out of them" He is a dangerous, uninformed person, ill equipped to sit in the Oval Office. He will continue Bush's policies and start WW3 with nuclear weapons. If McCain is elected, Armageddon will not be far behind him.

You know the transvestite Sally, aka Steve, has been here from the get go. It doesn't matter if you talk to him or not. The trolls talk to each other- or themselves. They even act as if they are two different people in order to have the pretense of conversation.

The DNC needs to get rid of them, we cannot. The DNC could pick a few regulars to moderate, but it chooses not to do so. We are stuck with them until the DNC either moderates or figures a way to ban them from the board. Hoping our silence will do it is optimistic-to say the least. Look what happens in the middle of the night when they are left unchallenged. The trolls just spout their crap incessantly.

We lost a lot of folks when the blog went down, but they do seem to be coming back little by little. Many people have found a different homes for their blogging. I saw the Rev with a journal over at the Democratic Underground, maybe he will cross post. People who left because of trolls, they won't be back until the DNC fixes it. Meanwhile, mcstupid is doing everything he can to emulate bush. He visited a drilling platform yesterday and guess what, he had his sleeves rolled up, had his hard hat on and even had gloves. Voter Registration Key to Obama's Efforts to Put Virginia in Play

Richmond - Virginia has added nearly a quarter-million registered voters since the 2004 elections, and about half of that growth came from increasingly Democratic Northern Virginia.

With Virginia a battleground state in the presidential race for the first time in 44 years, the additional voters have the potential to alter long-standing electoral patterns in some historically Republican counties while reinforcing the Democratic tilt of others.

You are absolutely right. I've been reading that the negative campaigning has been working for McSame.
We take the "high road" and lose. We were way ahead in the summer of 2004, in the end we were to close. Do we have to win ugly? No, I don't think that is the answer, however if the truth is ugly we have to say it again and again.
What's the difference? The Repukes lie to win. Thye will say whatever will scare the American people in order to win. We need to tell them the truth even when it is perceived as negative.
The Repukes win with the economy. Why? They lie and say over and over again that they improve it- even when that is NOT the case. Say the truth louder and more often, that is what must be done.

The Repukes win with National security. Why? It flies in the face of reason! However, they say it again and again. The truth is they have made us less safe. It needs to be shouted from the roof tops.

The Repukes say there is a liberal press. Where? It is evidently not true. We need to call them on it and not pretend that it is self evident. It may be self evident to those paying attention, but most people are too busy. They need to be told the truth louder than the lies!

I could go on and on...

UN inaction fuels military conflict - Russia August 9, 2008

The UN Security Council is holding another meeting to discuss the escalation of fighting in South Ossetia, this time at Georgia’s request. The previous closed-door emergency session called by Russia failed to reach a decision on the situation in the conflict zone.

The Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin says the lack of a swift response to the violence led to its escalation.

"I am compelled to state that Georgia continues its treacherous attack on South Ossetia. This is happening despite the appeal of the Russian leadership for an immediate ceasefire and an end to this fratricidal conflict and resumption of the negotiating process.

This scenario has become possible as a result of the connivance by a number of Security Council members who blocked last night’s assessment of the tragedy on the basis of the documents submitted last night by Russia.

The aggression was perpetrated in violation of the fundamental principles of the United Charter on non use of force".

And speaking at the UN security council, the Georgian Ambassador Irakli Alasania accused Russia of supporting a regime which encouraged ethnic cleansing:

"It was apalling to hear from the Russian Federation representative talking about the ethnic cleansing supposedly perpetrated by the Georgian armed forces. I want to remind the Council and Ambassador Churkin that it is the Russian Federation who really was supporting and is supporting militarily the regime in Tskhinvali and Sukhumi who are the perpetrators of the ethnic cleansing which is confirmed by the numerous OSCE declarations and UN documents".

UN rejects Russia-drafted resolution

Earlier the Security Council rejected a Russia-drafted resolution calling on Georgia and South Ossetia to immediately put down their weapons. The US, Britain and some other members backed the Georgians in rejecting a phrase in the three-sentence statement that would have required both sides "to renounce the use of force." But now there seems to be a slight shift of attitudes of some sides that were reluctant to the resolution.

"This meeting has indicated that the international community and most of the Security Council members are not prepared to put up with the military means in settling those long-standing disputes," Russian ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin said about the UN meeting held earlier on Friday.

Speaking after the meeting, Vitaly Churkin said the Georgian leadership had lost the international community's trust as a result of its military operation.

"All of Tbilisi's actions have fully undermined the credit of trust vested in the Georgian leadership as a committed party in the negotiations and in international dealings that meet the UN principles and charter," he said.

This is happening despite the appeal of the Russian leadership for an immediate ceasefire and an end to this fratricidal conflict and resumption of the negotiating process. This scenario has become possible as a result of the connivance by a number of Security Council members who blocked last night’s assessment of the tragedy on the basis of the documents submitted last night by Russia".

Hey thanks Pam and Cate - you are so right. Obama has got to come out and call them out when they are lying!

Someone said yesterday and I forgot, about Obama putting his team together right away and have them fan out and start attcking McCreep and all of the right wing talking heads that dominate the media these days. that is straight out of Lee Iacocca's book. He said that we need to start looking at the complete package, not just one man. He also thinks McCain would be a disaster if elected. this coming from a man who probably is more republican then Democrat.

If there are any Obama team membes who lurk and read - you have to start attacking McCain. All of his hg wash can no longer go unchecked...it's time folks. Let's go get them this time -

Pam-
That article made me feel like Obama was patting my hand saying "There, there, everything will be fine." I am not buying it. If he doesn't take the gloves off and start pointing out the basic truths about the Republican nominee, and the Republican agenda, we are screwed.

And, for the record, we didn't lose the election in 2000, that has been proven. There is enough evidence to suggest we didn't lose in 2004. We can't be close. We have to do more than say what we plan on doing "if we win". We have to show what they have done, how they have hurt the country, the economy, and everything they have touched, save for what profits themselves and their buddies.

Hi Pam! Wow, great minds are in sinc this morning!
Here's a super read just for you, and hopefully everyone else by the most caring wise old soul from Sweden who was the head of the U.N. when the Bush Push was a stampede to aggressive invasion of a sovereign nation for the first time in our history and now, as Johne has mentioned, that forged letter linking Bin Ladin to Hussein on top of no WMD's and all we've found out since.
How appropriate this article is now! I do not think this was very good PR for Sweden either, as I recall little Bush was pretty tempermental and put down Hans harshly. They will not forget that. We are lucky we had Hans Blix and not someone else then. He took the hits for us and for peace the best he could at the time, and later would write this article.

Hans Blix: A war of utter folly...

Not when they hear about Obama's stand on infanticide.

Hows about McGhosty's stand on the draft? Just bear them and raise them for a few years and then pick and send them off to become cannon fodder when they are ripe and their mothers have plumped them up for production...that's the repug way.
so much for your kind of cider.
I choose to keep my angels in Heaven rather than subject them to a fate such as this but then, I allow others to choose as they will even if I think they are nuts. Therein lies the difference between freedom and oppression.
