John F. Kennedy accepts the Democratic nomination at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.

We are not here to curse the darkness; we are here to light a candle. As Winston Churchill said on taking office some twenty years ago: If we open a quarrel between the present and the past, we shall be in danger of losing the future.

Today our concern must be with that future. For the world is changing. The old era is ending. The old ways will not do.

It is amazing how topical and current the main themes of this speech still are. Oh, Communism has all but fallen, the space race come, gone, and gone on hold; but the big picture-- the fact that humans face huge challenges to our very survival, and the fact that the world is watching to see what the US will do next-- is just as true now as it was nearly 50 (!) years ago.

Thanks much for this-- both video and link to transcript.
