McCain Falls Flat in Speech to Disabled Veterans

Posted by Matt Ortega on August 11, 2008 at 12:30 PM

John McCain's plan to improve veterans healthcare is not getting any standing ovations.

To help veterans who live far from VA hospitals or need specialized care the VA can’t provide, McCain proposed giving low-income veterans and those who incurred injury during their service a card they could use at private hospitals. [...]

Joe Violanti, legislative director of the Disabled American Veterans, a nonpartisan organization, said the proposal would increase costs because private hospitals are more expensive. The increased cost could lead to further rationing of care, he said.

In the meantime, McCain's appearance may have done more for Senator Barack Obama's bid for the presidency than his own. McCain took the opportunity to continue his false, dishonest attacks on Senator Obama instead of, you know, talking about veterans issues.

Other veterans, such as James Jewett and Jay Johnson of Texas, expressed misgivings about McCain using the occasion to attack his opponent so fiercely.

Duke Hendershot, a double amputee retired Marine who served in Vietnam, supported McCain’s run for president in 2000 but is undecided this year.

“John just isn’t the same as he used to be. He’s not his own man,” said Hendershot, who lives in San Antonio, Texas. “A lot of that has to do with how he’s wanted this job so bad for so long that he’s tied himself to President Bush.” [...]

Hendershot also criticized McCain for taking swipes at Obama in his speech. “He should have been talking about veterans issues, not his opponent,” he said.

By contrast, he praised Obama for keeping his remarks tightly focused on veterans. The Democrat gave taped remarks via video.

Like, what was McCain going to talk about, his voting record on veterans' issues? LOL!

Is it because I am older and remember what it was like in 1972, lines at the gas stations, on odd and even days? But mostly, I don't understand why the Obama has not countered McCain’s position on additional off-shore drilling to offset dependence on foreign oil. America was promised the very same thing in the 1970's, to garnish approval of the Alaska pipe line. Yet, that same oil is now being distributed exclusively to off-shore consumers. I am told it is because the price of oil sold over seas, demands a higher return than if sold in America.

This is funny because atleast McCain is a veteran. Don't we need a leader that has some type of military experience, especially in this day and age?

We are talking about a man who spent 5 years of his life as a POW!

Get real people and realize that the democrats have and will always be anti military!

Gannush has obviously not followed either McCain's voting record or his military one. McCain's a loser and a sellout.
He had a military career ONLY because his daddy was an admiral who kept people busy covering his kid's butt, he was a fly-boy with no knowledge nor interest in finding out about tactics or strategy. He has consistently voted AGAINST veterans' bills, and he is a hothead with a bad temper, and senile to boot.

Obama is a smart guy, and can figure out where to find and hire top talent as his advisors, unlike Dubya Bush, our deserter-in-chief (another fly-boy, go figure) who scraped the bottom of the barrel for advisers because that's where the kiss-butts are.
Yeah, Let's talk military experience. Get real, guy!

Butte,

It is sad that all you democrats think the same way. You cannot think for yourselves. I am an independent veteran who saw the military health care system and I would vote against putting more money into that broken system as well.

Also, You democrats think you deserve everything for free! Why should I have to pay more percentage points in taxes against my income because I went an got a college education?

Get real, get a real job, and think for yourself!

I don't understand how anyone can say that Democrats want everything for free, when Democrats raise taxes to fund America's economy and make this country a better place, while Republicans always cut taxes, and that is when the economy fails. It fails when we, as Americans, fail to provide for our country. Any true American knows that you work for what you want, the country becomes a better place for everyone.

And that is why, right now, we need Obama in office more than ever.
