Gee, this is a surprise.
Just carrying this over from the old roll in reply to PamB about the remark about the U.N..
Good one Pam! Here's a good article by Hans Blix, former head of the U.N.:

Morning,
cate and Kathy I agree, Obama and dems knew the dirty stuff was coming in this election, and they need to counter it somehow. Trouble is, the media is a little skewed and the truth and real issues get little traction. Obama, and dems, need to use the news opportunites to spotlight the dirty negativity and educate voters.
If it weren't for the media infrastructure and gamed voting machines the dems would clean up in this election. They better had anyway, if they know what is good for real people, and can get this message out.
"Any man who has had the job I've had and didn't have a sense of humor wouldn't still be here."

Good morning Team Obama! Let's get McCain's numbers up over at http://www.bop-o-rama.com. Let's have a great day. Can't wait to hear who will be VP!
Another Open Thread - Thanks Matt!
DON"T FEED THE TROLLS I'm laying down a challenge to anyone - let's see if we can get to 12:00 EDT without talking to a troll....anyone else in on this?
Getting back to that article about Obama coming out swinging... anyone got any ideas on an ad? I wish Dave/Mich were on - he always comes up with good ones!!!
Maybe Pammy will tell us how when her daddy dumped her mom and walked, it left pammy so hate filled.
acar - I can't wait either about his pick for VP.. it's a real drama I think but a good one! I have always liked Biden and think - it's his time.. I love his wit and if anyone can get to McCain's temper - it'll be Biden. And that is what is needed right now - they have to get to McCains temper - let the country see what he's really like... Joe can do it..
Poor Kathy,
the trolls won't even talk to her, how sad.
They're saying that the press is following Biden around all over the place - watching every move. But all of the top cintenders have been told to have their cell phones ready today... so who knows, Obama might be changing his mind at the last moment.
You all been following this military tribunal illegality? There is a rush to execute the loose ends of the 9/11/01 whitewash.
Confession by torture and then mock trials, just what kind of country have we become?

The face of 9/11
Published: August 15 2008 18:03 | Last updated: August 15 2008 18:03
Khaled Sheikh Mohammed was happy to die. But on June 5 – the day the self-confessed mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the US resurfaced after five years in the CIA’s shadowy network of secret prisons, and then behind the concertina wire at Guantánamo Bay –
~snip~
This was a big day for both the prisoners and the Bush administration. Mohammed and his four co-defendants were to be arraigned: they would hear the charges against them, be informed of their rights and have the chance to enter a plea. The Pentagon hoped the high-profile commission would refute criticism that the first US war crimes trials since the second world war were nothing more than kangaroo courts designed to guarantee convictions. This was also the first time a senior al-Qaeda member would be put in the Guantánamo dock over 9/11. While a US military commission delivered a five and a half year sentence on one of Bin Laden’s former drivers, Salim Hamdan, he was so inconsequential that he was not mentioned in the 567-page report produced by the bipartisan, independent 9/11 Commission.
~snip~
“I do not mention the torturing,” said Mohammed. “I know this is a red line.” It was strange that the judge allowed these words to reach us in the press gallery. Why hadn’t he hit the switch and cut off the sound at the mention of torture? The chanting began again. “My shield is Allah...”
~snip~
Mohammed knew exactly how he would respond to the courtroom script. When asked whether he understood that he could face the death penalty, he responded calmly: “Yes, this is what I wish ... I have been looking to be a martyr for long time.” Was he sure he understood? “I understand very well.”
Then he started reciting from the Koran again: “Nothing shall befall us save what Allah has ordained for us.” The judge, sensing that he was losing his battle to convince Mohammed to accept legal representation, urged him to keep an open mind and to talk to his lawyers. But speaking on behalf of the advocates, Mohammed shot back that Kohlmann would not give the lawyers a chance to speak in court. The military commissions, he said, were a “contradiction” and the defendants had been tortured before arriving in “Inquisitionland”.
~snip~
“I do understand that I will be killed for the sake of God,” Bin al-Shibh said, “but I don’t understand that I am guilty.” He said he had studied Islamic jurisprudence and sharia law while in college. Had he ever used this knowledge in his work? “Not officially,” he replied, to laughter in the media room.
Yeah Tom - they want to clean house before we clean house... they are a bunch of sick mother -f***ers aren't they? Bush/Cheney/McCain are criminals and they should all be tried in international courts!
This is way Obama needs to start attacking. If he doesn't, we might as well pack it up before it begins. It'll be over.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.
McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.
The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.
Trouble is, the media is a little skewed and the truth and real issues get little traction. Obama, and dems, need to use the news opportunites to spotlight the dirty negativity and educate voters.

Tom, the media is going through exactly what they did after 9/11.
they are full of fear that any slams against McCain, will be taken as a slam against his time in the military. (I won't call it his service, because he did not really 'serve', singing his head off in POW camp)
Look what they did to Wes Clark, because he dared to criticize McCain. The media has no balls, that unfortunetly, is the problem!
So what areas of attack should Obama take? I'd say keep on the message of how McCain messes up and doesn't know what he's talking about. I'd point out time and again that McCain wants to give big oil more tax advantages while paying out millions to lobbiests. I'd bring out that to be shot down over Viet Nam doesn't make you qualified to be President, I'd go after McCains voting record for vets - what else?
Pam - I agree. The trouble is to win any elections, we have to regain control of the media. Since it's been in the back pocket of the republicans these last several years, we can't get our message out.
Let me reiterate what happened in Georgia/South Ossetia one more time, so little minds can maybe grasp it.
the BLAME the UN mentality is childish and un-informed. Just because the UN has dared to tell Bush in the past to go pound sand, all of a sudden they are the enemy!
South Ossetia is a small piece of Georgia who did not not believe in the Georgia desire for Democracy and NATO membership. So they declared they wanted to become their own country. Well, Georgia went in and invaded them! south Ossetia asked for Russian help, thus why Russia went in there !!!!
Got that?
Having trouble in viewing new posts... will be back later.
It sure has been nice not having a bunch of trolls this morning!!!!!
Later guys..

CAMPAIGN NEWS
McCain Moving Up In Polls, Takes 5 Point Lead In Zogby National Survey
New polling data just released by Zogby International this morning shows Sen. John McCain jumping to a 5 point lead over Sen. Barack Obama nationally. The poll of 1,089 likely voters taken August 14-16 shows McCain leading Obama 46%-41%; a similar poll last month showed Obama leading McCain 47%-40%.

Hilary will be ready for the vote at the convention, Obama can't make it, he is out.
Enough Pussyfooting!
For the first time www.realclearpolitics.com has McCain winning the 270 needed in the no toss up electoral college.
Obama will get a bump from the dem convention but the rep convention is right on the heals of ours so the bump wont be much.
Time to take the offense now until election day. Obama has been playing defense long enough. And we have all seen that playing defense and being detailed does not win elections. (Kerry & Gore)
Obama needs to loop from now until election day, McCain saying he doesn't know much about the economy and calling the recession "psychological" and show Graham saying we are in a "mental recession" and "we are a nation of whiners."
He also need to run until election day, Bush and Cheney and McCain saying "The war will be easy" and "we will be greeted as liberators"
He also needs to run until election day, different segments of McCain vs. McCain.
All this can be found at www.therealmccain.com and youtube.com.
Time to be aggressive. This election is way too important to lose.
What will McCain do, when he is in a 24/7 job? Will he decide to unplug the Red phone on weekends? Will he ignore warnings, like Bush did, of impending attacks?
New York - Russia invades Georgia and President Bush goes on vacation. Our president has spent one-third of his entire two terms in office either at Camp David, Maryland, or at Crawford, Texas, on vacation.
His time away from the Oval Office included the month leading up to 9/11, when there were signs Osama bin Laden was planning to attack America, and the time Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city of New Orleans.
Sen. John McCain takes weekends off and limits his campaign events to one a day. He made an exception for the religious forum on Saturday at Saddleback Church in Southern California.
I think he made a big mistake. When he was invited last spring to attend a discussion of the role of faith in his life with Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, at Messiah College in Pennsylvania, McCain didn't bother to show up. Now I know why.
It occurs to me that John McCain is as intellectually shallow as our current president. When asked what his Christian faith means to him, his answer was a one-liner. "It means I'm saved and forgiven." Great scholars have wrestled with the meaning of faith for centuries. McCain then retold a story we've all heard a hundred times about a guard in Vietnam drawing a cross in the sand.

The media at this point, with few notable exceptions are nothing but corporate shills who've sold out their integrity, and profession to Big Business to worship the Almighty Dollar.
The journalism profession, like so many other of our institutions have been destroyed by the corrosive miasma, compounded of the hunger for power, overwhelming greed, an unhealthy dose of sociopathy, and blatant hypocrisy and lack of integrity, that has surrounded the Republican party like the scent of a landfill on a hot Texas day ever since Nixon.
The media needs to be brought back to its roots and start dealing with truth and facts that it hasn't bothered with for the last 10 years.

I wouldn't be too concerned about a Zogby poll. I know he is respected in most quarters, but he is also an anti-Israeli defender of the Palestinians and their "cause." We don't know how the questions were posed, and polls are easily slanted by sample selection and/or "loaded" questions.
Grass roots action is the best answer to all this media bullshit. Volunteer and work at what you are assigned to do. Hit back.
Here are 2 ads Obama should run. I call them "Clueless John Abroad" and "Clueless John at HOme".
The first one shows him talking about the Iraq-Pakistan Border. Then a map showing where those countires are and an announcer saying "john McCain doesn't have clue about Mideast Geography." Then McCain talikng about Czechoslovakia, then a map of Europe showing that Czechoslovakia no longer exists and an announcer saying "John McCain is clueless about Europe." And so on.
Then do one with his gaffes about domestic facts and events, same "clueless" line.
I think it would absolutely kill him.
No, Danny Fanny, I do not go hide.! I Saturday, while you are sitting on your fat ass here as usual.
answer this honestly! What kind of life do you have, anyways? you are cyber trolling 24/7. What kind of spousal relationship do you have? Can you not afford to take a vacation? Does your kids only call you when they need something? You are a sad example of a man!
I feel sorry for you.
Bush and his cronies have created an evil empire in which the main currency is blood that pays for oil!!
It is SOOO humid by my house today... It's like 105 with the heat index. You just know that Bush and his cronies are behind this.
did you know that every 100 dead muslims increases our oil prices by .15 cents. It's true. I saw it on the internet.
I meant to say, I am cleaning, shopping, yard work, cooking, etc for our big party on Saturday, while Fat Dan sits on his ass here, all day, all night. Posting stuff he gets from other bloggers or trolls, because he does not have a creative thought in his dull brain.
sorry Kathy, I will not address them anymore! There is not one of them worth it.
LOL, good one! So Limbaugh does not like Lieberman either !!
"Joe Lieberman is being vetted as a Vice Presidential running mate for John McCain, and it seems to be an option that McCain is seriously considering.
Noted Duran Duran scholar Kathryn Jean Lopez says that Rush Limbaugh no likey:
If John McCain picks Joe Lieberman as his running mate, he would "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory," as radio talk-show king Rush Limbaugh put it in an e-mail last night.
Obviously, I have an elaborate nightmare where Joe Lieberman gets the VP nod, McCain wins, then dies -- and we're looking at a President Lieberman. At which point I and a host of others bloggers who supported Ned Lamont wind up in Guantanamo Bay.

I wonder how accurate Zogby was in 2004...I think I remember. I have to wonder how these polling places are able to release these things with a straight face while admitting that the only people asked were those with landlines. Many people under McBush's age now have termed their landline in exchange for their cell. Polls are meaningless, especially this far from the election.
Blue-
I saw that earlier and I thought it was a great idea. :)
Obama-Kennedy that would make me smile.

I can envision Putin taking out all the technology and then melting those tanks down and presenting them to Bush as trophies to decorate The Ranch when he retires...each holding a single serving of Chicken Kiev inside.
I venture to guess that Bush hasn't seen the last of Putin kicking in around before he leaves Washington.
Don't you sense something very personal about this Russian retaliation? They are taking their good old time getting out and twisting the knife even deeper every time they find a reason to stall a little longer.

Just rec'd the above.
Good afternoon, all!
I just heard John Zogby on the Ed Schultz show. HE pointed out that a few months ago Obama had a surge in the polls, so nothing can be read into this one blip as being concrete. It just showed up in this particular 3 day tracking poll.
What I know about the Zogby poll is that people sign up to be surveyed,a and they use a chunk of the same people over and over. If you aren't signed up to be asked, you won't be asked to take their poll. If a bunch of Pugs requested to be on his list it would skew the numbers.
Rasmussen has it Obama 45%, McSame 42%
The Pollster Average of All Polls shows Obama leading Grampy Grumpy, etc.
...and on it goes. This looks like what is called an "outlier". A statistical fluke that will even out by the next one.

I strongly agree with you Kathy. Biden would be a great choice. Obama needs to have someone by his side that can help manuveur thru DC. I wouldn't be at all disappointed if it were Gore or Clark.
somebody should have told Congress that, when Bush uses "Executive Privilege" and the Patriot Act, to do everything from invade countries, spy on our phones and computers and medical and financial records, Veto whatever he wants to.

Good afternoon, all.
Has anybody heard anything new about Obama speaking in Springfield, IL on Saturday?
I'm thinking about changing my canvassing to Sunday. My husband is off this weekend, so we could go hear the next President...and maybe the next Vice President of the United States.
I so want to do this. Please tell this was not a rumor.
Does anyone think Hillary might try and challenge Obama for the nomination at the Denver convention? If she calls for a rollcall vote and manages to get a majority then boy-oh-boy will things get heated up!
Posted by MarkLof on August 20, 2008 at 03:02 PM
There would be mayhem on the streets. I would be worse than when MLK got whacked.
Sandy, it's not a rumor. Springfield has been power washing sidewalks and the police has increased their manpower. Manhole covers are being welded shut and the Secret Service has been all over the place down there.
The Sun-Times "Obama reporter" broke the story yesterday; here's today's article.
Obama, running mate to rally in Springfield
I imagine tickets to the Old State Capitol grounds will be hard to come by. He drew 20,000 in February 2007 for his announcement and it was close to zero degrees.
Sandy - yes he is supposed to be in Springfield on Saturday. We will probably learn then who his running mate will be. He will probably get a pretty big dump in the polls after that and then of course is our convention where we can tear apart the republicans layer by layer until there is nothing left... and that will be in the first hour of the convention!!! When you're a shallow republican and all you can spew are lies... it won't take long to expose the little bastards for what they really are...terrible creatures who have wasted this country...terrible creatures..I spit on every one of them... phew phew...

Sandy, yes. Obama will be in Springfield on Saturday, where he (and Abraham Lincoln) announced his candicacy for the US President. He will be announcing his VP then...most speculators think.
hahah - I said dumb when I meant BUMP......hahahaha
Sandy - there's a whole group of us trying to get a get together and all be together when this
takes place... somewhere where there is a bar with lots of TV's - we want to fill the place up and make some noise and PARTY!!!!
Posted by Kathy_from_Indiana on August 20, 2008 at 03:27 PM
Exactly. After McOldCane chooses his VP, we'll be able to tear down him AND his VP "layer by layer". You know who ever McCain picks will be bad for the country. Unless he picks Hillary, or Gorbachev.

No speech from Charles Rangel at Democratic convention in Denver
By CELESTE KATZ
DAILY NEWS POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT
Friday, August 15th 2008, 4:00 AM
It doesn't look like House Ways and Means Committee Chairman - and longtime Hillary Clinton backer - Charlie Rangel is scoring a big speaking role at the Democratic National Convention.
Intermediaries for the influential Manhattan Democrat spoke with representatives of Barack Obama's campaign - which is driving the convention schedule - and were unable to secure Rangel a speaking slot, sources told the News.
"We have a wealth of talent within our party and very limited speaking roles," said convention spokeswoman Natalie Wyeth when asked if Rangel would have a moment in the Denver limelight.
A Rangel spokesman declined comment
======================================
The reason why is Rangel will stand up there and say he is going to raise everyones taxes,.
I'M VOTING DEMOCRAT:
I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.
I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
I'm voting Democrat because, when we pull out of Iraq, I know that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in fifty or a hundred years if I don't start driving a Prius.
I am voting Democrat because I know we don't need to develop American energy resources as long as I properly inflate my tires.
I am voting Democrat because I believe that business profits are unnecessary. Businesses only need to break even and give the rest to the government for redistribution to deserving people who are entitled to it.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe five elite liberal judges should rewrite the Constitution to meet international standards and to implement 'laws' that could never get past American voters.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists come over here, I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them with.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe 'marriage' is whatever anyone wants it to be except for those who belong to some right-wing religious sect.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 8% on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 20% isn't.
Makes ya wonder why anyone would EVER vote Republican, now doesn't it?
Another loser idea McNuts has:
Talking to the Pueblo Chieftain newspaper, McCain said the Colorado River Compact "obviously needs to be renegotiated." (Pueblo Chieftain, Aug. 15) He wants to take water from Colorado to deliver more to his home state of Arizona.
Senator Ken Salazar wasted no time responding. "Over my dead body," he said. What McCain proposed flies in the face of decades of hard-won negotiations, which resulted in an agreement reached just last year that protects Colorado's water rights from exploding sprawl in downstream states like Arizona.
The Denver Post denounced McCain's attack on Colorado's water rights, saying "McCain's comments were...not only political poison in Colorado, they displayed a disturbing ignorance of the realities of the West's scarce water resources. To say Westerners are disappointed in McCain would be an understatement." (Denver Post, Aug. 19)
He just doesn't get it does he? I bet anything that he just pissed off most of Colo with this one..hehehe, like I said - give that creature a rope and he'll hang himself every time!

DPD,
I've never believed polls are accurate. The results can be skewed by the sample or how the questions are asked.
Any research numbers that swing so sharply in one week have inherent problems. I wouldn't accept the findings of a routine blood test that did that when I was feeling fine.
And I'm feeling fine about Obama. Independents are still considering him while most have written off McCain along with all the rest of the incompetent GOP incumbents.
Never forget that McCain is an incumbent Republican and point it out to your neighbors.
Unless Obama advocates some radical new policy before November this election will be about the record of this dysfunctional White House...and McCain's bungling demeanor just reinforces that perception among voters who are fed up.
Obama's success will be just the tip of the iceberg. There is going to be large Democratic gains in Congress. The RNC is worried about this more than Obama...and they should be.
When we get control of both the White House and Congress, voters are going to see major legislation passed within the first few months. And, for the first time in almost two decades (that's a whole generation) there will be real help for the middle class, working poor, and seniors.
We are going to build a whole new constituency which can only grow as Americans see positive results again in their lives. We will deliver the goods that the Republicans couldn't.
Never forget that people do not want to see a Third Bush presidency. They are going to vote for change not a angry old Republican fraud (that's the way Republicans define McCain).
They've seen enough of these kinds of GOP candidates in the past 15 and lived to regret it.
Our momentum is only going to grow as the college kids get back into the campaign and parents start sending their little ones back to school. How can we not think about the kind of future they will have if this Republican nightmare is allowed to continue?
We are going to have a party next week and the torch will be passed. Hillary and Bill/Al and Tipper will grace that stage with Obama and his VP to remind the middle class that peace and prosperity are possible again.
Catch you all later.

McClellan to Obama: Don't investigate us
Scott McClellan advises Obama, in an interview with my colleague Daniel Libit, not to investigate the Bush administration — because it would, McClellan says, damage Obama's image. (Not that former Bushies have anything at stake in that choice.)
That's a sleeper of an issue that, if Obama's elected, could blow up into a major one in unexpected ways, as some foreign governments suggest they'd arrest top Bush administration officials on torture charges.

Here's why I am voting Democratic!
A Day in the Life of Joe Republican
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.
The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have." bwhahahahahahaha.
Oh, those big bad terris are just going to come and get us, so I think I will stay hiding under my bed and let George Bush and John McCain scare them away!!! LMAO!
Actually, Pam, I think it was Keith on last night's show that commented that since Americans have become so immune to hearing about how the terris are coming that the only thing that is getting the fear factor going is "the Cold War is back!" and we're going to get nuked by the Russians.
