Another McCain Attack Ad Debunked in Record Time

Posted by Matt Ortega on September 3, 2008 at 02:22 PM

MSNBC political reporter Mark Murray on the latest dishonest attack ad from the McCain campaign. In fact, every assertion against Senator Barack Obama is just flat false.

It's important to note that there are a few misleading assertions in the ad. For one, the "Journal" that's cited is the conservative and partisan Wall Street Journal editorial page. Two, to call Obama the Senate's most liberal senator is dubious. (The charge comes from the National Journal ranking Obama as having the most liberal Senate voting record of 2007, but he was nowhere near the top in 2005 and 2006; it's also worth noting that Obama missed many Senate votes in 2007, so that ranking is a bit skewed.) And three, the charge that Obama "gave big oil billions in subsidies and giveaways" is misleading. (According to nonpartisan fact-checkers, the 2005 energy bill the McCain camp is referring to actual resulted in a net tax INCREASE on oil companies.)

Accurate or innaccurate lets stop bickering!
Did you know the largest group of non voters are unmarried women (maybe Chelsea helped change that)
36% of all voters are unmarried and 44%of the workforce.
Ever heard a politician mention a "Single" person?

I don't get it. Why Palin? The Gov of Alaska? A state that only has 670,000 citizens. Figure that is only 1.1 per Sq. Mile. Less than half the population of Philadelphia, and 10 percent of them are under poverty level in a state that has been flush with cash for decades.
I don't care about her daughter. What I do care about is what happened to the "Bridge to Nowhere" money, I know she said she turned down the bridge, but Alaska still got the 200 million. Wouldn't it be nice if every state received a no strings 200 million gift? What did a state with only 670 thousand people do with 200 million given by the 136 million of the rest of us taxpayers? And let's not forget that she supported the bridge before it became an embarrassment.
It begs the question. Personal stuff aside, was this the best McCain could come up with? If so, what was so wrong with the ones he didn't choose?

john,I quite agree that soulmate is not exactly a term that refers to a VP. It gets a little yucky don`t you think? Big,bad john is known for his wandering eye before ending a relationship.

Does a message like this from the Republicans really suprise anyone? What does suprise me is the lack of a coordinated Democratic response to these and all the other right-wing garbage. The Republican attacks and subsquent lack of Democratic rebuttal is very reminiscent of 2004. We are once again allowing them to dictate the terms of the election issues(Ex. The debate about more offshore drilling became a debate about energy independence when we won't see oil for atleast 10 years). Considering amount of damage one or two more Republican terms would cause to our country, I propose that the ends most definately justify the means in winning the White House. Where is the Democrats Karl Rove?

There has been too discussion of the daughter and not enough of the husband. I'd like to know where he fits in to the overall picture.
There has already been a question raised of why Todd Palin gets confidential emails from the governor's office, that are being refused to any other sources because of "executive privilege".
There has already been a comment made on this, but it is currently getting ignored.
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/shadow_governor It is very applicable given that the guy is an Alaska seccionist, and is employed by Big Oil. Who actually is running Alaska, and why is he getting in on confidential government business? Methinks there's an overripe salmon in the woodpile.

Butte,

I saw that yesterday, too. If Cindy had half the balls that this guy does, McCain wouldn't be in the trouble he is now. She would have "taken care" of "the problem."

I don't think the McCain or the RNC has any idea what kind of a rugged individualist this guy is. It's all personal with Mr. Alaska.

I think your're right, but is it going to fly with the Washington crowd, or did they pick her because Mr. Big Oil Employee can keep her in line?

Sarah Palin has said she intends to deliver a "jibe" to Barack Obama at her acceptance speech tonight. Is this where the gloves come off? My hope is that we Democrats can come up with a response that, while containing less rhetoric, can bring the point across that we have all HAD ENOUGH of Republican politics as usual.
It is time for Barack and Joe to make sure the rhetoric stays low. Don't fall for the Republican "mad dog" tactic - the only ones who lose besides the Republicans are the American people.

i'm in michigan and am tired of watching ads about the democratcs raising taxes. the tax and spend democrats aren't so bad compared to the charge and spend republicians

I have just watched Palin give her address at the GOP convention. It makes me livid to listen to her say that Barack Obama has no experience, has never passed or sponsered a bill, etc. Well, maybe they need to take a look at the President we have now. He was governor of Texas, and look where that experience led us. Maybe that's something we need to hammer to the media! Our coumtry couldn't be in worse shape and never has been. Thanks for listening. Lainie

I have a theory about that: what if nobody else was willing to serve? I mean, not everybody is ready to board a sinking ship. Did anybody else notice, tonight, that the Republicans can't even fill their convention hall? Entire banks of seats empty.

"...Obama missed may Senate votes in 2007".

Hhahahahahha - Like the one that would have provided for a political solution in Iraq - something the Senator says he supports. Duh.

And you imply that a net increase in taxes on oil companies is a good thing. Thanks for taking McCain's bait on that one.

Taxes distort economic decision-making. If an individual or a corporation give more money to the government that means there is less for you or that corporation for other productive activities such as researching and investing in green alternative energy sources. Yes, genius, those dirty oil companies invest in clean, green energy such as wind, solar, geothermal and cellulosic ethanol. Mr. Obama just made that more difficult for them by successfully raising their taxes. Good work.

THAT IS REALLY GOOD NEWS. Now an attack on Palin would ber good to see

Palin like Edwards is going to be outed by National Enquirer for having an affair with her husband's business partner. National Enquirer has already released a heads up here is what is coming. The main article will be next week. National Enquirer is very careful with getting their facts straight.

Sandy H. hit the nail on the head when she said nobody else wanted to serve as VP. Do Giuliani, Rommey, and Huckabee really believe Palin is more experienced and qualified than any of them?

And if McCain wanted a woman on his ticket, why not a notable Republican like Hutchison, Rice or even Elizabeth Dole?

The facts are it’s a lose-lose situation if they have any plans of running for President in the future. Putting a hockey mom on his ticket was an excellent choice and judging from the reception she got, that’s exactly what the Republican Party want as a President in the event McCain becomes incapacitated.

Wow,
what a negative, sartistic and hateful convention the RNC provided us last night. Well, true to form...MORE OF THE SAME! All they needed was a Willie Horton picture and the scare tatic would be complete.

Palin can't keep her on family in line, how is going to help the American people, she lives way up in Alaska, she knows nothing about our part of the country. She made me want to throw up. She has no experience, but slams Obama. wake America, she will take away some of the women's rights, such as roe vs wade,If they think they will get Hillary's supporters, women are smarter than that.

25
mil10 on September 4, 2008 at 03:36 PM

The problem with the democratic party is that they don't have one strategist. Have to give the man his dues, Karl Rove (despite being on the wrong site) is a political genius. The Democrats need to find a similar individual. The Republicans are very good at creating sound bytes and slogans to divert attention from the issues... at it works. The Democrats need to stop letting the Republicans pick the issues. STAY ON THEME. Palin is meant to be a distraction, get back on task and go after McCain. The more the talk swirls around Palin, the more McCinsane gets to avoid the real issues.

Jerry_Madison_WI on September 4, 2008 at 05:34 PM

Stick to: "The average American can't afford more of the McSame!"

Hammer McCain using his own video bragging about how he supported 95% of Bush's policies.

Continue to show Bush/McCain as the devastation-twins.

Show America that we can have increased security WITHOUT trampling on people's rights.

Show America that we value religious freedom, and that religion has no place in politics/government.

27
Jerry_Madison_WI on September 4, 2008 at 05:40 PM

They have accused 'her' of having no leadership skills. Why is your point that she has no control over the guard in a federal emergency. SHE STILL WAS IN CHARGE...
Thier point was that he has never held a job were he led, and they have nothing to back up his experience. Even if they callously dismiss her being a mayor of a small town, AND governor of a sparsly populated state, its still better than his resume. And Obahma is not running for VICE president.

28
steve2002 on September 4, 2008 at 07:45 PM

I would like to point out something I find very interesting. I am not commenting about Palin directly, this is a question about a comment McCain stated prior to anouncing his pick for vice president.
He stated in an interview that "the vice president has basicly 2 jobs... one is to make a decicing vote when things are locked (not an exact quote), and the other is to check on the general health of the president daily".
I cant tell you why he chose Palin, or even what Palin has or does not have to offer. The one thing I will point out is that this remark gives me the feeling that he does not think the vice presidency is an important job, and that his pick is more publicity and hope to pull the female vote than it is to actually take the person he puts into that position seriously.
