At least he did the job himself. Sarah Palin hired a city manager to do the work when she was mayor of Wasilla.

Arctic Sees Massive Gain in Ice Coverage

By Michael Asher, Daily Tech

Data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) has indicated a dramatic increase in sea ice extent in the Arctic regions. The growth over the past year covers an area of 700,000 square kilometers: an amount twice the size the nation of Germany. With the Arctic melting season over for 2008, ice cover will continue to increase until melting begins anew next spring.

image
See larger image here

The data is for August 2008 and indicates a total sea ice area of six million square kilometers. Ice extent for the same month in 2007 covered 5.3 million square kilometers, a historic low. Earlier this year, media accounts were rife with predictions that this year would again see a new record. Instead, the Arctic has seen a gain of about thirteen percent.

William Chapman, a researcher with the Arctic Climate Research Center at the University of Illinois, tells DailyTech that this year the Arctic was “definitely colder” than 2007. Chapman also says part of the reason for the large ice loss in 2007 was strong winds from Siberia, which affect both ice formation and drift, forcing ice into warmer waters where it melts.

Earlier predictions were also wrong because researchers thought thinner ice would melt faster in subsequent years. Instead, according to the NSIDC, the new ice had less snow coverage to insulate it from the bitterly cold air, resulting in a faster rate of ice growth.

Most concern has focused on the Arctic regions, rather than Antarctica. Recent research has indicated Antarctica is on a long-term cooling trend, for reasons which remain unclear. Earlier this year, concerns over global warming led the US to officially list the polar bear a threatened species, over objections from experts who claimed the animal’s numbers were increasing.

This election is not just about the incumbent John McCain. It's about all the incumbent Republicans, too. He is one of that Washington Elitist group.

If maverick Palin says that the Washington Elitists must go, then she's talking about them. Obama is the guy that was in the Illinois Senate for eight years.

And she's talking about herself. She (and her city administrator) went yearly to the Capitol to ask for hand outs for her little piece of the world from the Washington Republic Elitist while she was Mayor...to the tune of millions a year for a town of 6,000 people?

And who was in charge while she was doing it? The very Republican incumbents she now says were irresponsible...for giving her money for what she now says were unnecessary earmarks when those from other states got them.

Did you hear that the money for that Bridge To Nowhere went to Alaska after all? To pay for an access road to the Bridge To Nowhere... which is no longer going to be built.

Governor Palin is one of the biggest pork barrel politicians ever.

She's part of the the system that she says must go. And I agree with her wholeheartedly. Alaska has been one of the most corrupt states in the country since the Republicans took charge.

She's one of them...and she now under investigation.

Some people get upset when the unemployment rate goes above 6%?

When the FDIC is borrowing money from the Social Security Trust Fund to pay for the waves of bank failures the Treasury Secretary says is just beginning?

When your home has been foreclosed.

When their child is being sent back for the third or fourth time to Iraq...or backdoored?

When the cost of everything from gasoline to eggs has skyrocked.

When your job is being outsourced and you are being asked to train the foreigner who will take it?

Etc. Ect.

God help America.

The Sarah Palin Selection: Why McCain's Inexperienced Running Mate Falls Short of Meeting the Implicit Constitutional Qualifications For Vice Presidents

By JOHN W. DEAN

Friday, Sept. 05, 2008

In truth, the Vice President of the United States is important for only one reason: He or she will become President of the United States upon the death, incapacity or resignation of the President. Nine times in our history, vice presidents have succeeded to the presidency: John Tyler (1841), Millard Fillmore (1850), Andrew Johnson (1865), Chester A. Arthur (1881), Theodore Roosevelt (1901), Calvin Coolidge (1923), Harry Truman (1945), Lyndon Johnson (1963), and Gerald Ford (1974). Of course, the vice president also has a significant secondary role: It is he or she, acting with a majority of the Cabinet, who can declare the president incapable of carrying out the duties of the office, and then take charge - until the action is either ratified or rejected by a majority of the Congress. So far in our history, however, this has never occurred.

Given the fact that the 2008 GOP standard-bearer John McCain is seventy-two years of age, his selection of an inexperienced Vice Presidential running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has again focused attention on the process and procedures for selecting vice presidents - or, to put it more bluntly, the utter lack of process or procedures in selecting the person who is a heartbeat away from the presidency. McCain, not unlike others before him, selected a less than fully vetted running mate for political reasons. That is surely a concern for voters to think over in the upcoming election - but it raises a systemic concern, too, for the long run.

Consider this parallel: Does anyone believe that if John McCain were president and had selected Governor Sarah Palin under the Twenty-fifty Amendment to fill a vacancy in the vice presidency, Congress would have confirmed her? Not likely. In fact, it is even less likely that McCain would have even attempted to do so, for he would have embarrassed himself.

While the Constitution does not expressly set forth qualifications for the vice-presidency, it strongly implies them --- and Palin falls short.

How Our Constitutional Process for Selecting Vice Presidents Evolved

Our founders gave little thought to the vice presidential selection process. Initially, the candidate who placed second in Electoral College votes became vice president. While this worked for the first three presidential elections, the election of 1800 produced a tie in the Electoral College, between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr (both of the same party), and although Burr was the announced candidate for vice president, when he came up with a tie vote, he refused to step aside, forcing the resolution of the contest in the House of Representatives, which proved to be a messy affair.

This clear flaw in the system was corrected by the Twelfth Amendment, which requires electors to vote separately for president and vice president. It was the Twelfth Amendment (adopted in 1804), along with the growth of political parties, that encouraged the pairing of candidates in the presidential election. Since then, the vice presidential selection process has evolved from party leaders' making the selection to the current system, under which the party's presidential nominee is given the power to select a vice presidential running mate.

The Twenty-fifth Amendment (adopted in 1967) indirectly codified the power of a candidate for president to select his vice president, for the Amendment states that when there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, "the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress." A Vice President, like a President, must be a natural born citizen, at least thirty-five years of age, and a resident of the United States for fourteen years.

Of course, Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, meets the minimum constitutional requirements. But there also exists a clear subtext within the Constitution, and related statutes, that suggests that there are other, implicit qualifications for the Vice President, as well - qualifications as to which Governor Palin falls short. While this subtext is plainly not formally binding on either a presidential candidate or president, candidates and presidents have traditionally followed the implicit qualifications suggested by the Constitution.

The Twenty-fifth Amendment Suggests the Primary Qualifications for Vice Presidents: Be Equipped to Serve as President Starting, if Necessary, on Day One

I served as minority counsel to the House Judiciary Committee when the Committee was working on the Twenty-fifty Amendment. Accordingly, I recall well the difficult debates and discussions on how vacancies in the vice presidency should be filled. The procedures under discussion ranged from a special national election for the vice president, to a convening of the Electoral College to make the decision, to the selection of a vice president by the Congress.

The process that was actually settled on, as I mentioned earlier, codified the procedure that had evolved over the years, through which the candidate selected his running mate. In line with that procedure, presidents were similarly given the power to fill vacancies in the office of the vice president. But there was a crucial difference: Under the Twenty-fifth Amendment, presidents can only fill that office with the approval of a majority vote of both the House and Senate. Confirmation thus entails not only ratification by the public, but also scrutiny by political pros who assure Americans that the new vice president is up to the task of taking charge.

Twice, the Twenty-fifty Amendment has been employed to fill a vacancy in the vice presidency. Nixon appointed Gerald Ford to fill the office when Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned (under threat of indictment). Then, after Nixon resigned, and Ford succeeded to the presidency, Ford used it to appoint Nelson Rockefeller his Vice President.

Both Nixon and Ford explained their decisions, and the criteria at the top of their lists. Nixon wrote in RN: Memoirs of Richard Nixon that from "the outset of the search for a new Vice President I had established four criteria for the man I would select: qualification to be President; ideological affinity; loyalty and confirmability." (Emphasis added.) Nixon's first choice was his Secretary of Treasury John Connally, who was dropped because he would have confirmation problems. (Connally was, in fact, later indicted but acquitted.) New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller and California Governor Ronald Reagan were taken off Nixon's list because the selection of either one over the other would have split the Republican Party. Finally, also on the list was Jerry Ford, the Minority Leader of the House, on whom Nixon settled.

Ford explained in A Time To Heal: The Autobiography of Gerald R. Ford that he had given considerable thought to filling the vice presidency when he became president, and his staff developed a ranking system. "There was one overriding criterion," he wrote to explain his baseline: "[H]e had to be a man fully qualified to step into my shoes should something happen to me."

Ford's top aides eliminated George H. W. Bush, who had served in the House of Representatives and headed the Republican National Committee, "as not yet ready to handle the rough challenges of the Oval Office." And when Ford settled on one of the wealthiest men in America, Nelson Rockefeller, it resulted in protracted confirmation hearings because of the extent of Rockefeller's holdings (which might have raised conflicts of interest). But in the end, Rockefeller was confirmed.

Congress Has Also Suggested Vice Presidential Qualifications Indirectly In the Succession Statutes It Has Passed

The Twenty-fifth Amendment only covers succession to the presidency or vice presidency when one of these offices is vacant - not both. It is silent if there are vacancies in both of the offices of the President and Vice President. The scenario of concurrent vacancies has, however, been addressed by Congress, most recently in a 1947 law.

The line of succession to the presidency begins with the Speaker of the House of Representatives (currently, Nancy Pelosi of California). Next is the President pro tempore of the Senate (currently, Robert Byrd of West Virginia). Finally, if neither of these officers is willing or able to take the post, the succession law turns to the President's Cabinet members.

The current order of succession is Secretary of State (currently, Condoleezza Rice), Secretary of the Treasury (Henry Paulson), Secretary of Defense (Robert Gates), Attorney General (Michael Mukasey), Secretary of the Interior (Dirk Kempthorne ), Secretary of Agriculture (Edward Schafer), Secretary of Commerce (Carlos Gutierrez, who was born in Cuba, and thus not "natural born"), Secretary of Labor (Elaine Chao, who was born in Taiwan, and thus not "natural born"), Secretary of Health and Human Services (Mike Leavitt), Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (Steven Preston), Secretary of Transportation (Mary Peters), Secretary of Energy (Samuel Bodman), Secretary of Education (Margaret Spellings), Secretary of Veterans Affairs (James Peake) and Secretary of Homeland Security (Michael Chertoff). Under the succession statute, the presidency is filled for the remainder of the president's term.

Although this 1947 succession statute has been appropriately criticized, Congress has been reluctant to change it. The Congressional consensus has been that if there is a dual vacancy in the Executive branch's elected officials, it should be temporarily filled by a seasoned elected official from the Legislative Branch. In practice, while the full line of succession has been stipulated, it is unlikely that we will ever need to go beyond the Speaker of the House to fill the vacancy temporarily.

If neither the Speaker nor the President pro tempore is up to the task of serving, Congress has been comfortable with the caliber of appointees serving as Secretaries of State, Treasury, or Defense to serve as temporary president - for no one believes (absent a dramatic situation such as a massive attack on the seat of government that would call into force continuity-of-government plans) that the succession process would ever proceed beyond the "big three" Cabinet posts.

Governor Sarah Palin Does Not Qualify Under the Implicit Constitutional Standards

When Nixon selected Ford to be his Vice President, and Ford selected Rockefeller, the government was divided, with the Democrats controlling Congress. Yet a Democratic Congress approved both Ford and Rockefeller to be Vice President based on inter-branch comity. Surely no one would argue that Sarah Palin is in a league with Ford and Rockefeller when it comes to experience.

Nor does Palin possess anything close to the experience qualifications of the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, or the President pro tempore of the Senate, Robert Byrd. Indeed, I feel confident that Palin could not get confirmed for any of the top presidential succession posts, namely the posts of Secretary of State, Treasury and Defense. Palin's lack of qualifications have been widely noted. Newspapers from her state have raised questions of her qualifications.

Recently, I was in Alaska, just after Palin's name was first floated as a possible McCain running mate. Although I am not a Democrat, I gave a keynote speech at the Democrats' state convention. During my visit, a senior Democratic Party official said to me that he sure hoped McCain would select Palin, because based on his observation of her record Alaska, he opined that, : "She's screwing up Alaska big time, and she could probably assure defeat for McCain." His wish may be coming true.

I really enjoy the intelligent, thoughtful posts on this blog but...

This blog reeks of trolls lately. They must really feel threatened. Not surprising because that's the only way the GOP can get anyone elected right now by lying and attacking their opponents strengths. Or perhaps they are getting paid that high minimum wage to rat fuck this blog.

It cracks me up how the republicans accuse the democrats of doing exactly what they are doing. For example trying to make it look like Obama got to where he is because he is a celebrity but good grief any idiot should be able to see that this Palin is nothing but a tabloid celebrity which got McCain's campaign a lot of attention. No one even heard of her until now. Obama has been in the NATIONAL public spotlight for more than a week and has been examined by the media. Palin's 15 minutes of fame should be over soon, I hope. But never underestimate human stupidity, right Sally, Dan, et al? That's what the republican campaign is certainly counting on...the vote of the uninformed who are "mavericks" and just charge ahead and live by knee jerk reactions who fall for remarks from some cute little snarky soccer mom. I'm sure some of the dictators that have risen to power were quite the "mavericks" too.

Go ahead you trolls...attack and lie away and get your jolly's. I don't know why you bother because you'll never change our minds on this blog. We actually have some core values and believe in our party's principles.

Jack will ultimately see or hear about this bile. Do Republicans really think he won't take it into consideration when he make comments in the future?

It also shows just how much Republicans respect much less like women.

Every time one of these demented Republicans make such an offensive remark it comes back to haunt them. Sarah Palin's remarks this week will, too.

I still think its criminal that the rich old men in the GOP are using her to keep them from falling completely on their faces and then will blame it on her when they fail in November. She'll be lucky to get re-elected in 2010.

But since maybe all she's ever wanted to do in her life was be on TV it will all work out. After her performance at the convention, she's a shoe in to take over as the GOP's chief media pundit liar from the aging Baye Buchanan.

you know with miss congeniality coming on the scene it has me wondering just why the hell do alaskans get all this money??

(AP) It's the season for Alaskans to be rewarded just for living here and this year's take is extra sweet: $3,269, a record share of the state's oil wealth combined with a special cash payout to help with stratospheric energy prices.

"Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell announced Friday that every eligible man, woman and child will receive $2,069, thanks to this year's annual payment from the state's oil royalty program. On top of that, the checks will include an additional $1,200 from the state treasury to help offset soaring fuel prices."

i mean so it is a little rough living up there, who gives a shit? it's a little rough living in a lot of places....try east l.a. or the louisiana bayou or brooklyn but nobody throws those folks some mad money because their resources are being exploited...wtf?

Longevity risk for one - investment risk secondarily - but I do agree some portion of the trust should be invested in marketable securities outside the reach of the government (gradually - so as not to distort the market)

That makes perfect since to me!

Perfect is more complex I think.

Why dont we slash corporate taxes and cut taxes for small business to create meore jobs?

Corporate taxes are taxes on corporat "profit" - they affect shareholders - the tax is already offset by deductions for capital investment.

Bush called on Republican congress to adopt his tax policy and they obliged.

In whatever analysis you do, don't forget to leave out the 16th ammendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Things were so bad that ammendment was circulated to everyone in the country asking them if it would be OK for the U.S. government to tax their income.

They said yes so I assume that things must have bee pretty bad.

Palin is a joke that is really backfiring on the Republicans. Here are some facts about her poor record as are being reported on websites all over the country.

As mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Sarah Palin took over with a balanced budget, but left it over $22 million in debt, even after she pushed through a massive sales tax which taxed everything, even food.

She is dangerous. As mayor, the council had to step in to prevent her from firing people she didn't want. She even tried to fire a librarian for refusing to remove books Palin deemed "offensive".

In her short term as governor, Palin is under investigation by her own Republican state legislature for "abuse of power".

Sarah Palin believes that a woman should be forced to bear child even in cases of assault and the mother's health. She opposes stem cell research in all cases, sued to keep endangered species off the list, and even said that the Iraq war was a "task from GOD".

WHY did John McCain pick Sarah Palin, a person he barely knew, especially when there were so many qualified women to choose from? The same reason he votes with Bush 90 percent of the time.

Bad Judgment.

And we can't afford 4 more years.

Posted by CHStuart on September 5, 2008 at 09:21 PM I am starting to see the light.

Maybe - but a tax on corporations not only affects shareholders - it affects employees.

Employers have direct incentives to reward shareholders - except in a few segments of the economy they have no incentives to reward their employees.

When given the choice, Employers will reward their shareholders as much as they able.

Questions for Miss Congeniality to practice answering in case she ever talks to the press:

1. Your husband was a member of the Alaskan secessionist organization from 1995 to 2002...did he tell you? If not where did he say he was going on meeting nights?

2. You want to make abortions in cases of rape or incest illegal. a hypothetical...David Berkowitz breaks out of jail and finds his way to Alaska and rapes one of your daughters. He is caught and sent back to jail in upstate New York....you of course make your daughter carry the fetus and give birth but do you allow Dave visitation at the prison?

3. Jews are reluctant to take Jesus as their lord and savior even though he has brought much suffering to them over the years all of which you believe was his way of getting them to see the light...if elected, as a Dominionist, would you use the governments authority and force to punish the Jewish people into becoming more perfect?

4. Have there been any wars in history that were not God's wars? That is any wars that God did not have a side on...if so which ones?

dors,

And your responses explain why the GOP won't let Palin anywhere near a real journalist till after the "debates." By then she will have memorized all kinds of trite, smart ass comebacks that don't answer the questions but sound soooo butch.

She will have the mindless Republican Base at her feet and begging for more. I wonder how many of them already have their backs to the wall financially and blame it all on Bill Clinton...because other smart ass Republicans have told them so?

But this time there is going to be fewer of them. And more of us. We are gaining from all demographics.

Plus there are enough of them who have had enough of the BS from their own Party. McCain was the wrong candidate. Even Palin can't carry him.

They aren't selling the truth. They are selling the performance.

BREAKING NEWS
MSNBC
updated 6 minutes ago

The federal government has prepared a plan to take control of troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, several news outlets reported Friday night...

...Quoting unidentified sources, the Post said that the companies would be placed under a conservatorship and that the value of the companies' common stock would be diluted but not wiped out, while other securities, including preferred shares, would be protected by the government...

...The government-sponsored companies hold or guarantee half the U.S. mortgage debt and are considered crucial to the mortgage market's continued operation...

i guess on monday mcbush will tell us more about his character and palin will be meeting with bush to figure out how to keep the economy from completely collapsing....

Posted by WestHartford on September 5, 2008 at 09:28 PM Never mind we have one of, or the highest corporate tax rates in the world, raise it.

Really? A comparison of corporate tax rates around the world is a complicated formula.

The measure of taxable profits is different in each country. In the United States, the taxable profits are calculated according to a quite different set of rules (stat) from those used in the calculation of profits in the financial statements (GAAP).

The amounts that can be deducted for capital expenditure and for interest payments vary substantially from country to country.

No, CH - gas prices are going to continue to go up until there is no more oil.

The new goal should be to insure that we in this country pay less for energy than anyone else in the world and to do that we need investments in all forms of energy nuclear, renewables, and conservation.

And we should also leave some of our oil reserves around for our children so they have something to make scotch tape with.

So why aren't the royalties paid to Alaskans being shared with the rest of us?

Last I checked Alaska was still a member state of the United States. The US Congress approved drilling on Alaskan soil, and wants to drill more, but where are those profits going to go? Apparently not to the rest of us. Many Alaskans want to secede from the United States, which doesn't sound so patriotic to me (no offense Todd Palin).

Of course Alaskan oil is being sold to all of us at prices set by the oil market, which is controlled by the rest of the resource countries, including the Middle East. So basically, the price we pay at the pump is largely set by the Saudi's, Iranians, Venezuelans, Russian and Alaskan oil comnpanies, to name a few.

Seems like the democrats' call for windfall profit taxes should be acceptable to McCain/Palin, isn't that exactly what Americans living in Alaska enjoy? It's a national resource and the profits from its removal from our lands are being spent by Alaskans on snowmobiles, bread, homes, snowshoes, trucks, etc. The rest of us want a little money to go to the federal treasury for such things as alternative energy, roads, bridges, schools, etc.

We love Alaska, toured there and it was one of the great experiences of our lives. We saw receding glaciers, eagles and vast mountain ranges. We all want to preserve it and not ruin one of the great natural wonders that needs to be preserved for all Americans.

But for the record I don't think any segment of the ecconmy that generates wealth wheter it's labor, capital, or business should be over taxed.

I just have a problem when too much the burden is placed on labor.

And yes - I'd rather start with trimming government first.

Gee this rescue of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had to be done to save the country from a total colapse. Not only did GW and the Republican super majority congress deregulate the banking industry they also deregulated the futures trading that's why oil went to 140 a barrel. Remember Bush running for 04 "Home ownership is at an all time high." The republicans have brought about the very things they con their Kook Aide drinkers to hate, socialism.

It's really not that simple, Lincoln - though I don't disagree with the loophole comment - Corporate taxes are progressive for one - A company making $50 million a year pays at a lesser rate than one making a $1 Billion

In the U.S. it ranges from 15% to 35%.

What's really important is what constitutes taxable profit.

If what's taxable includes what encourages investment - then that's bad.

The first surgeon, from New York, says, 'I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.'

The second, from Chicago, responds, 'Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded.'

The third surgeon, from Houston , says, 'No, I really think librarians are the best. Everything inside them is in alphabetical order'.

The fourth surgeon, from Los Angeles, chimes in: 'You know, I like construction workers.. Those guys always understand when you have

But the fifth surgeon, from Washington, DC, shut them all up when he observed: 'You're all wrong. Republican Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains and no spine, and the head and the ass are interchangeable!

Spare me the Pitbull

Palin's acceptance speech was not only a let down, but an outright insult to American women and men. How stupid do they think we are; how gullible and naive? Haven't they heard of the Internet and the advances in technology and communications that dominate our present and shape our future? Do they really think that their lies will go unnoticed?

I, for one, have no time for soap operas, reality shows, and sarcastic political speeches lacking the one thing that America needs today more than ever: truth. I am too busy trying to keep a smile on my face while I balance my job as a public high school teacher, two 18 year old sons in college, a husband who served 20 years in the USAF, now recovering from a stroke and brain surgery, banks that could care less, insurance companies and hospitals that want their money NOW, and a lifestyle change that requires fruits and vegetables that I can't afford.

When I take away from the precious little time I have to enjoy with my sons and my dear husband to listen to a presidential candidate talk about our future, I expect, no, I demand that their message be with my future in mind, not theirs. Do I sound selfish? I am not. I am a United States citizen of the present, of the future, and as such I repudiate the dirty, mafia style political tactics of the past. I want the truth; I demand the truth in detail. Tell me straightforward, without lies or fantasy trips of denial, what your plans are for my future, for the future of the United States of America.

As many Americans, I was curious. Who was this Palin woman that was able to create all this media mayhem in such a short while? Oh, yes, because after listening to her speech, I have no doubt that all this family drama was staged to divert our attention from the fact that she had to be holed up for three days in order to "get prepared" for her speech. Was it worth it? Was it worth dragging that teenager through all the mud "hoping to quell Internet rumors about Palin's youngest son"? In their delusional minds it was. They needed the time to prepare the pitbull because they are counting on the brainwashed herd that will follow the maverick to win the election. They are counting on that pitbull to bark and snarl and bite any strays that think of leaving the herd.

What they are not counting on is that the new America, the America of the future is characterized by many mavericks with minds of their own, with the guts to stray away from the herd and choose the path that is best for themselves and their families. A path paved in nothing less than the truth and respect that they deserve. In the new America, there isn't one maverick, there are many, many brave, intelligent, fearless mavericks that see the pitbull for what it is, a "breed of dog that was historically used for dog fights", is legally banned in many places or must be "registered as a vicious animal", a breed that "must be muzzled and leashed in public". (I love Google and Wikipedia!)

The millions and millions of mavericks that will vote for Obama in November are not afraid of the pitbull. They see the dog for what it is, a vicious fighter that belongs in our past and should be muzzled and banned from public speech.

Please forgive me; I know my message does not directly address the economic and social issues that are so important to us all, but I've been watching the Republican convention on and off for the last 3 days, and, well, you know, bad habits stick easy.

this fannie and freddie thing is really a big deal...the times has a detailed piece on it...

this part is most entertaining:

Experts said that the longer the administration waited, the greater the potential risks and costs. Charles Calomiris, a professor of economics at Columbia University’s School of Business, said delaying a government rescue would only increase the risks and costs.

“The last thing you want to do is give a distressed borrower more time, because when people are in distress they tend to take a lot of risks,” he said. “You don’t want zombie institutions floating around with time on their hands.”

Posted by WestHartford on September 5, 2008 at 10:02 PM That is the goal, except Obama does not want to drill. Obama does not want nuclear power plants built. He just wants to dream and make it go away.

You didn't listen to Obama's speech - but I do give John McCain credit for bringing nuclear power back into the national debate in a big way.

Now we need someone to point out that it's not a good idea to use natural gas to generate electricity since a lot of us use it to heat our homes.

americans reduced driving by about 3% and the price of oil dropped. conservation is the most effective way to lower prices, make a dent in global pollution and change the world.

dors as for the ten thousand year warranty on those nuclear waste piles....ever notice how every time they open up a time capsule...and they usually open them up after fifty years even though they were supposed to be opened hundreds or thousands of years later...ever notice how a frog always jumps out and everything is soaking wet?

who is going to regulate all the waste sites? who will keep them safe? who will check them? who will pay for this? the free market is not going to provide for our safety...it will maxmize profit which will result in a nightmare...forever.

The waste really isn't the problem, Greg - it's with the design, construction, and operation of the plant itself - and yes - we, the people, the government of the United States should best look over that

(I'm trying the to use "regulation" "R" word here so our Republican comrades don't get offended).

What also reduced oil was a new bill that was written after the congressional hearings into Oil Futures Trading. There is a bill that is supposed to go thru the house/senate but will probably have to wait as GW will definetly veto it. That bill will put ceilings on how high speculation of energy futures can go, like it used to be before the seven years of hell people took over.

A big problem with the nuclear reactors also is that nobody wants it in their back yard. I know a perfect place for one though. Crawford Texas.

I've got some nuclear power plants near by - I like my energy costs by and large - I also like the fact that the energy "deregulation" hoopla was looked by all of us like a corn dog with too much dough and not enough dog - and I'm a Democrat.

I was watching Michael Moore on Larry King and he made a comment on all the Bush people that are working on McCain's campaign. Can some talented person make an ad via the internet or tv to show who these people are so that the people can see that it really is more of the same.

Thank you

I just refuse to believe that a beauty queen could be the first woman elected as Vice President of the United States of America! I thought that by now we would have gender equality in our Country. After all, that was the promise of the 1960's and 70's. Maybe we are closer to gender equality than I know and the next Republican President elected will be a Chip and Dale dancer? I mailed a contribution to help elect Senator Obama President because I feel this Country is trying to move forward and believe that he can lead us. Collectively he can win and when he takes office that will be a happy, happy day for me. I am a 51 year old woman and have voted in every presidential election since the age of 18, but if Palin takes the historical first woman VP, I will never cast another ballot. However, I do have faith in our better angels and know that together we will put the right men in office!

$4.00/gallon gas and $130/barrel oil is the best economic turn of event in the past 30 years in regard to U.S. energy policy.

Democrats and republicans claim they both have the leadership to get us to energy independence. Gov't can't do it and gov't won't do it.

The free market is the only force that can and will bring energy independence to the U.S. The higher the price of oil, the better the economic incentives in the form of Adam Smith's invisible hand to guide entrepreneurs to produce cheaper, cleaner alternatives. High oil prices are our only hope for obtaining energy independence.

Gov't will not bring us energy independence. Free marekt incentives will--incentives that exist in the form of high prices. If democrats really care about our environment, they would tax oil and gas out of existance, before the natural price point does it for us. Unfortunately, as far as oil prices go, democrats and republicans both pander to populism.

It's time we tighten our belts, suck up the cost, and realize we are the generation that must bear the burden of expensive oil in order to eliminate our dangerous dependence upon it. It's too bad neither Obama nor McCain have the integrity to share this sobering message with Americans.

The closest thing that exists in the world to a "free" market (by your definition) is the drug trade - if you don't abide by a contract they kill your family.

Every legitimate business in the world relies on government to enforce the laws that protect their intellectual property rights, their copyrights, and their patents.

In your world, that protection should only afforded to business - not consumers.

Environment Minister Wilson row over green 'alarmists'

The Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has angered green campaigners by describing their view on climate change as a "hysterical psuedo-religion".

In an article in the News Letter, Mr Wilson said he believed it occurred naturally and was not man-made.

"Resources should be used to adapt to the consequences of climate change, rather than King Canute-style vainly trying to stop it," said the minister.

Peter Doran of the Green Party said it was a "deeply irresponsible message."

Mr Wilson said he refused to "blindly accept" the need to make significant changes to the economy to stop climate change.

"The tactic used by the "green gang" is to label anyone who dares disagree with their view of climate change as some kind of nutcase who denies scientific fact," he said.

The minister said he accepted climate change can occur, but does not believe the cause has been identified.

"Reasoned debate must replace the scaremongering of the green climate alarmists."

John Woods of Friends of the Earth said Mr Wilson was "like a cigarette salesman denying that smoking causes cancer".

"Ironically, if we listen to him Northern Ireland will suffer economically as we are left behind by smarter regions who are embracing the low carbon economy of the future."

It is the latest clash between Mr Wilson and green groups since his appointment as environment minister in June

Well, well, old woman, I ask you this. What happened in the Pacific North West back in the 70´s when all of the Green Liberal Asshat Eco freaks started destroying a WHOLE American Timber industry with their warpped ideas of Conservation?
Entire classrooms of children were bussed out into the woods and planted 2-3 trees for every tree that was felled, and were taught everything about conservation by people such as loggers and woodsmen. For many years locals kept up their own forests and did their own Forest management and it worked very well. They regulated their own lands and it worked. Now the Elk, who thrived in the upper clearcuts no longer have their own habitats so they come down and destroy far crops. The result is an on going stagnation in the timber industry, and your very own peanut farming president didn´t help. Your sex addicted Slickwilly didn´t help at all. The liberal comgress blocked everything that Reagan and President Bush sr. and Jr. tried to do.
And the result is: canada is exporting everything to japan, and the most painfull thing of all, people in the pacific NW, and are forced to buy canadian wood products while their very own timber industry is nothing but a shadow of itself.

thanks to the anti american group of liberalprogressiveglobalwarmingcommiewhiners that you belong to.

First Jackson Browne, then Chuck Berry, then they just couldn't resist and used Heart, but the group is not happy about the theft of their song - Barracuda - by the Republican Party to serve as the introductory music for Sarah "Barracuda" Palin.

They didn't even honor the original artists or ask permission it seems...and now the group will take action to stop the attachment of their song to the image of Sarah Palin.

Go fuck yourself, you old crossdresser. "Sally", "Margaret", and whatever other women's name you have been using for several years.

Google has over 9,000 hits on that dress looking like it came from a 1960's sci-fi movie or TV show, and The Daily Show" used it as a punch line for a 2 minute segment.

Go fuck yourself, or Palin, OR her daughter. The whole family seems that they just can't get enough of that Stevie stuff. (it).
