I just got this from the ACLU. It is very important! Please read!

Dear ACLU Supporter,

We are on the eve of one of the most historic elections of our time. And the last thing America needs right now is another election that leaves us uncertain of its legitimacy.

Unfortunately, there are enough shenanigans going on to raise serious concerns.

The biggest of them all: Attorney General Mukasey and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are walking away from their sacred responsibility to guarantee smooth and fair elections.

While the government is engaged in a highly-publicized attempt to raise the specter of voter fraud against groups who have been working hard to register poor and minority voters, the DOJ is doing little, if anything, to deal with the real problem -- hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of registered voters who may turn up on Election Day just to be turned away.

Election officials should concentrate their limited resources on expanding access to the ballot box and protecting voters. Demand that the Department of Justice act to protect voting rights.

The ACLU and other civil rights groups have repeatedly warned Justice Department officials that high-profile, partisan voter fraud investigations before Election Day have a chilling effect on voter turnout. Despite this feedback, the Department of Justice and the FBI continue with these highly publicized and partisan efforts prior to this historic election rather than stopping unlawful behavior in states all over the country where eligible voters are being improperly purged from the rolls.

For example, despite the ACLU’s request to DOJ to intervene to stop states from purging eligible voters, DOJ was silent when Michigan engaged in two statewide voter purge programs that could have disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of voters in advance of the November 4th election. The voter removal programs were operating in direct violation of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA), a federal law DOJ is supposed to enforce. By state officials’ own admissions, these programs were impacting hundreds of thousands of voters.

The ACLU -- along with the Advancement Project -- fought these programs in court to protect the integrity of this year’s election. And just last week, a federal judge found both programs to be illegal.

As Election Day fast approaches, help us keep the pressure on the DOJ for a fair election. Demand that the Department of Justice acts to protect voting rights.

If the 2004 election is any indicator, we can expect many more voter suppression tactics to pop up between now and Election Day -- things like voter intimidation masquerading as “poll watching,” misleading campaigns providing false election information, additional unlawful purging of voter rolls, racially motivated voter suppression tactics, unfounded accusations of fraud and much, much more.

The right to vote is protected by more constitutional amendments than any other right we have — the 1st, 14th, 15th, 19th, 24th and 26th. The Supreme Court has repeatedly declared that the right to vote is protective of all rights. Yet, in practice, that precious right is too often trampled upon.

Make sure the Department of Justice takes decisive action before Election Day to protect this sacred right.

IBD/TIPP Tracking Poll: Day Nine Posted: Tuesday, October 21, 2008 4:30 PM PT

Obama's lead has widened a bit more as independents break his way and McCain still can't get traction among GOP strongholds. Independents, who were split on the two candidates a week ago, now back Obama by 7 points. But 22% remain undecided. McCain still can't pull more than 65% of conservatives, in contrast with the 85% support Obama enjoys from his liberal base. Neither can he get more than 41% of married women, and investors are back in the Obama column.

RUSH: Gloria Borger was on CNN's Election Center last night, the host Campbell Brown. "Where do things stand, Gloria? Is Sarah Palin hurting rather than helping the McCain campaign?"

BORGER: Well, she certainly isn't bringing along Hillary Clinton supporters. Anybody who thought that she was going to bring along Hillary Clinton supporters was not looking at Sarah Palin's record and Hillary Clinton's record. She is bringing along white men who like her a lot and she's rallying the base. But is she bringing along those independent voters? Absolutely not.

Russia, Iran and Qatar discuss forming gas cartel

By NASSER KARIMI, Associated Press Writer – 42 mins ago

AP – Iranian Oil Minister, Gholam Hossein Nozari, center, speaks with media during a joint press conference …
TEHRAN, Iran – Russia, Iran and Qatar made the first serious moves Tuesday toward forming an OPEC-style cartel on natural gas, raising concerns that Moscow could boost its influence over energy markets spanning from Europe to South Asia.
Such an alliance would have little direct impact on the United States, which imports virtually no natural gas from Russia or the other nations.
But Washington and Western allies worry that closer strategic ties between Russia and Iran could hinder efforts to isolate Tehran over its nuclear ambitions. In addition, the United States opposes a proposed Iranian gas pipeline to Pakistan and India, key allies.
In Europe — which counts on Russia for nearly half of its natural gas imports — any cartel controlled by Moscow poses a threat to supply and pricing.
Russia, which most recently came into confrontation with the West over its five-day war with Georgia in August, has been accused of using its hold on energy supplies to bully its neighbors, particularly Ukraine.
Moscow cut natural gas exports to the former Soviet republic over a price dispute during the dead of winter in 2006 — a cutoff that caused disruptions to European nations further down the pipeline.
The 27-nation European Union expressed strong opposition to any natural gas cartel Tuesday, with an EU spokesman, Ferran Tarradellas Espuny, saying: "The European Commission feels that energy supplies have to be sold in a free market."
Together Russia, Qatar and Iran account for nearly a third of world natural gas exports — the vast majority supplied by Russia — according to U.S. government statistics. The three hold some 60 percent of world gas reserves, according to Russia's state-controlled energy company Gazprom.
The United States — the world's largest consumer of oil and gas — produces most of its natural gas needs at home, importing only from Canada and Mexico.
Russia is also a major oil producer, though not an OPEC member. For its part, Iran, in its standoff with world powers over its nuclear program, has threatened to choke off oil shipments through the Persian Gulf if it is attacked.
A gas cartel could extend both countries' reach in energy and politics, particularly if oil prices bounce back to the highs seen earlier this year, prompting renewed interest in cleaner-burning natural gas and other alternative fuels.
Tuesday's gathering in Tehran appeared to be the most significant step toward the formation of such a group since Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, first raised the idea in January 2007.
"Big decisions were made," said Iranian Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari. His Qatari counterpart, Abdulla Bin Hamad al-Attiya, said at least two more meetings were needed to finalize an accord, according to the Iranian Oil Ministry's Web site. No timeframe was given.
Calling the grouping the "big gas troika," the chief executive of Russia's state-controlled energy company Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said it would meet three or four times a year.
"We are consolidating the largest gas reserves in the world, the general strategic interests and — what is very important — the high potential for cooperation on three-party projects," Miller said.
Already, Russia has built Iran's first nuclear reactor, which Iranian officials say could begin operating later this year. The West fears Iran's nuclear program could lead to development of atomic weapons; Iran insists it is only for peaceful energy production.
Experts say a natural gas cartel would not have the same influence on prices as OPEC has on oil since natural gas is not subject to the same severe fluctuations.
"There's always some worry when these guys get together that they'll try to replicate OPEC, but they know that's not doable," said Robert Ebel, senior adviser to the Energy and National Security Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "They can try to get more control over gas, but it's not OPEC."
That's because gas, unlike oil, is traded on much longer-term contracts, of as much as 25 years.
"Gas is a regional commodity and oil is an international commodity," Ebel said. "If you want to buy a tanker of crude, you can buy one at today's prices. When you want to build a natural gas pipeline, you have to have two things: enough gas to justify building a pipeline that will operate for 25 years, and ... customers that will agree to buy that gas at a range of prices for 25 years."
Still, a natural gas cartel could wield some influence on world prices, particularly in Europe and Asia, said James Cordier, president of Tampa, Fla.-based trading firms Liberty Trading Group and OptionSellers.com.
"To try to maneuver the supply ... makes perfect sense," he said. "Just because it doesn't have the clout of oil, it's still in their best interest to deliver natural gas where it needs to go and manage supply in order to help manage the price."
Liquefied natural gas — a rapidly growing segment of the market — could be traded as a commodity similar to oil at some point in the future, and the move by Russia, Iran and Qatar appears to anticipate that, said Konstantin Batunin, an analyst with Moscow's Alfa Bank.
Gazprom, the Russian state energy company, is looking to make the U.S. one of its prime markets for liquefied natural gas, and sent senior executives to Alaska last week to discuss energy projects.

from nbc/wsj poll:

" The one candidate whose popularity has fallen is Gov. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee. Voters are less likely to see her in a positive light, and much more likely to report negative feelings.

Fifty-five percent of voters say Gov. Palin isn't qualified to be president if the need arises, up from 50% two weeks ago. And when given a list of possible concerns about Sen. McCain, voters were by far most likely to say they worry about Gov. Palin's qualification to be president.

The concern about Gov. Palin may also be reflected in the enthusiasm gap between the candidates, which appeared to be closing after the conventions but has widened again. Four in 10 McCain voters call him the "lesser of two evils"; 14% of Obama voters feel the same way. Twenty-six percent of McCain voters say they are excited about their vote; twice as many Obama voters feel excited."

Powell drops the hammer on McCain

By ROGER SIMON | 10/21/08 4:47 AM EDT

The scene is “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Tom Brokaw has just asked Colin Powell if he is prepared to say whether he is supporting John McCain, to whom he has contributed money, or Barack Obama, whom Powell has told he will not support “just because you’re black.”

Colin Powell is, indeed, prepared to say whom he is supporting. And he does so for the next seven minutes and eight seconds, a lifetime on television, which Brokaw has the wisdom not to interrupt.

Speaking with neither anger nor malice, Powell’s words nonetheless fall like hammer blows on McCain.

“I found that he was a little unsure as to [how to] deal with the economic problems that we were having, and almost every day there was a different approach to the problem,” Powell says of McCain.

And that is a concern, Powell says, because McCain doesn’t seem to have a “complete grasp” of our economic difficulties.

Sarah Palin?

“I don’t believe she’s ready to be president of the United States, which is the job of the vice president,” Powell says. “And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Sen. McCain made.”

You keeping score? McCain doesn’t understand the economic crisis, is erratic, is trying to foist an unqualified vice president on the nation and has shown questionable judgment.

Can it get worse? It gets worse...

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14783.html

Even the moderate Republicans are bailing on the McCain campaign. Now let's see someone try to trash a lifelong Republican and such a revered figure as GEN Colin Powell.

Some will try to say, as Rush Limbaugh has postulated, that GEN Powell is doing this merely because of race. If that were so, why didn't GEN Powell endorse Jesse Jackson in 1988 or 1992? Why didn't GEN Powell endorse Rep. Ford (D-TN) in his senate bid against Sen. Corker (R-TN)?

This race isn't about race though the far right, as evidenced by Rush Limbaugh and his clones, is using just that tactic to whip their base into a feeding frenzy. Is that the type of campaign you want to support? Is that the type of President you want to support? If so, John McCain is your candidate.

Fifty-nine million people were suckered into voting George W. Bush in 2004 and you see what happened to this great antion of ours. We Democrats are warning you again, if you elect John McCain you may as well put George W. Bush in for a third term. John McCain has proudly porcliamed that he voted with President Bush over 90% of the time, far more than the candidates he ran against in his primary.

4NOV08 is a fortnight from now. Think; then vote. Make America that shining beacon on the hill once again as President Reagan asked. Do not let forces of division and racism win again as they did in 2004. Restore honor and dignity to the Oval Office. Vote for Sen. Barack Obama as your forty-fourth President of the United States. Our future is at stake.

Bi-Polar Disorder: Is the Presidential Race Really Tightening?

For those Democrats still worried about the trends at RealClearPolitics (RCP), they can look forward to an upward tick for Obama as soon as Wednesday morning. Then, the site will add the 14-point Pew survey as well as one of the tracking polls now showing a 9 point Obama lead. Those two new polls will replace the two oldest surveys used by RealClearPolitics that had small Obama leads of 6 and 1 point, respectively.

The net effect will be that Obama's average on RCP will, in just a day, shoot up from a 5.7 point lead to an 8.1 point lead. Obama supporters will be able to put away, at least for now, their Rolaids, while McCainiacs will have to double their dosage of Wellbutrin, Paxil and Zoloft.

Partisan Games Should Lead To Bipartisan Prosecution or Be Dropped; Voter Challenges Hit Sen. McCain's Ohio Staff

COLUMBUS - ProgressOhio.org today called on the Franklin County Board of Elections to investigate and refer to the Franklin County Prosecutor evidence that out-of-state McCain/Palin campaign workers have registered to vote in Ohio with no intent to stay in-state.

Research by ProgressOhio confirms what has appeared in numerous Ohio blogs, including Blue Bexley:

Ryan Meerstein is currently the State Director for McCain's campaign in Ohio. Online biographies indicate he has worked for political campaigns or parties in four different states during the past two years (for the RNC in Virginia, for Sen. Corker's campaign in Tennessee, for Rudy Giuliani in South Carolina, and McCain in Ohio). He attended college in a fifth state, and his given hometown is in a sixth state.

The Franklin County Board of Elections reports receiving his completed absentee ballot on October 14. Record that indicates Mr. Meerstein is also currently registered to vote in South Carolina.

Other high-level McCain Ohio staffers such as Paul Lindsay and Jason Levine also appear to have recently moved to the state and registered to vote, while displaying no greater or lesser likelihood to remain a resident than some of the Vote From Home volunteers.

"The Franklin County Board of Elections made national news last week by referring 13 volunteers from the Vote From Home project to the Franklin County Prosecutor alleging they are not eligible to vote because they are not from Ohio and have no intent to stay in Ohio," said Brian Rothenberg, Executive Director of the non-partisan ProgressOhio.org. "If this is how they interpret the law, it should be applied equally, without regard to political affiliation or belief, or not at all.

"We call on the Franklin County Board of Elections to investigate this accusation, and any similar accusations that may arise and to forward the information in similar fashion to the Franklin County Prosecutor," said Rothenberg.

"We don't believe the Vote From Home volunteers are any more or less guilty than these McCain/Palin campaign workers," said Rothenberg. "You can't selectively prosecute. Either drop the investigation to all concerned or expand it to all concerned. Otherwise this smacks of a partisan game."

Rothenberg said given past practice in Ohio, the best thing for Prosecutors and the Franklin County Board of Elections to do would be to drop the whole issue. "The state of Ohio has been around for 205 years and campaign workers have probably done this riding in from horseback, stagecoach, steam locomotive, and airplanes. This is partisan hype singling out 13 kids for simply trying to help people exercise their rights to vote. If you are going to investigate them, then all 'out-of-state' campaign workers should be subjected to the same standards."

Watch for this one, Dems........

"The New York Times Magazine is set to publish an explosive story this Sunday on the inner workings and combative personalities of what has been a wild few months for the McCain campaign.

The piece, written by Robert Draper and titled "The Making (and Remaking and Remaking) of the Candidate," breaks some new reportorial ground, including a growing weariness within a campaign that seems more interested in tactical victories and the next compelling narratives than an overarching strategy. Draper writes:

"By October, the succession of backfiring narratives would compel some to reappraise not only McCain's chances but also the decisions made by [Chief Strategist Steve] Schmidt, who only a short time ago was hailed as the savior who brought discipline and unrepentant toughness to a listing campaign."

Having interviewed several of the Senator's chief aides, Draper details the process by which McCain ultimately chose his running mate (New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was surprisingly high on the list). And the decision may have been even more impulsive than initially thought. Gov. Sarah Palin, who had never been on the VP shortlist, was advanced at the last minute by Schmidt and Rick Davis, and was picked after a less-than-hour-long chat in with McCain at his ranch in Arizona.

Here is the thing. McLame seems to have a real problem with "sharing the wealth". Obama needs to attack that point. The American worker has increased their productivity over the past 8 yrs. significantly. Real wealth is created by actual work, building something or providing a service. And the American worker has been building that wealth. Yet they have seen no real increases in their wages and their buying power has actually gone down. Meanwhile profits and CEO pay are WAY up. American jobs have been shipped overseas by these same CEO's to increase the company profits. Sending American jobs over seas is NOT patriotic.

John McLame wants to continue Bush's policies that don't share the wealth created from the sweat of the American worker. Damn right it's time to share the wealth.

"Dopey-ass commie?" Is this what GOP politics has devloved into? Where is your debate on policy, Dan? Where is the GOP's discussion of how they think they can better manage the nation based on the last eight years of experience? If your candidate wants to run on his experience then so be it. We've seen what happens when experience GOP operatives are given the reigns of power.

By the way, did you ever hear Jesus use a racial slur or state that rich people should have all of the advantages in life as opposed to the poor people as the McCain campign and its surrogates, and you for that matter, has?

But religion has no place in American politics and vice versa. Religion is to be left to individuals for their spirtual growth. We Democrats believe in a speration of Church and State. How much growth has your spirit done during this election cycle, Dan. How about your colleagues? I think your posts, and thos eof your fellow trolls, are an excellent indication to the answer of that question. God bless and good luck.

Right-wing smear groups have tried using guilt-by-association to connect Barack Obama to Professor William Ayers.

Smears like this often spread as part of a broader, shadowy strategy to scare people who aren't very familiar with Barack by spreading false information.

Here’s the truth: the smear associating Barack to Ayers is “phony,” “tenuous,“ – even “exaggerated at best if not outright false.” Ayers and Barack barely know each other. They served together on the boards of local charities, but do not know each other well.

Ayers is now a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Barack has publicly denounced the acts Ayers committed in the 1960’s (when Barack was only 8 years old).

You can get more details and help spread the truth about these shameful attacks:

Good evening, all.

This woman has some serious public financing problems...and maybe tax problems, too.

AP INVESTIGATION: Alaska funded Palin kids' travel

By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE, ADAM GOLDMAN and MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writers Brett J. Blackledge, Adam Goldman And Matt Apuzzo, Associated Press Writers

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081021/ap_on_el_pr/palin_family_travel

I would never have dreamed of taking my children along on business trips and have them attend actual meetings with me much less charge their hotel and food expenses on my expense account. And if I had, you bet the IRS would have considered the money income from my employer.

Read this article very carefully. This is not a responsible adult. She's a conniving bush league corrupt politician.

She took her kids on sight seeing tours to big cities, disrupted governmental conferences with their presense, and in one case charged the state for their expenses to go watch their father snowmobile race...under the cover of some official duty.

Look at how she's been trying to cover up her tracks now that she's under the eye of the national media. Too little way too late, imho, and a clear indication that she knows that she's in big trouble.

Why McCain doesn't think so is beyond me.

This is the height conceit and a complete disregard for taxpayers' money. It's a clear indication that she thinks abusing power is her right. It almost appears like she's been doing this so long that she doesn't even understand that it might upset people if they found out.

Someone really needs to look into "The McMansion that Todd Built" with a few of his buddies during the snowmobile season.

If this woman somehow becomes vice president, she will be gone faster than Spiro Agnew...or impeached.

We are not electing any POST TURTLES, in this election its to important. And i fully expect Palin to keep trying to climb back on top of that post, but she'll never get there again she is at the highest point that she'll ever get to in her POLLITICAL lifetime, and she never should of have ever been put on top of that post to begin with.

Q: Is Obama's brother really dirt poor in Kenya and living on a dollar a day?
A: CNN tracked down George Obama, and he said that he was "brought up well" and "live[s] well now."
On August 21, tabloids and news organizations picked up reports from the Italian edition of Vanity Fair about George Obama, Barack Obama's half brother, living in Nairobi, Kenya. The magazine said George was "earning less than a dollar a day."

The Daily Telegraph in London trumpeted the news with this line:

Daily Telegraph: Senator Barack Obama's long lost brother has been tracked down for the first time living in a shanty town in Kenya, reports claimed.

Stateside, our own New York Post gave it this all-caps treatment:

New York Post: BARACK BROTHER IN SHACK SHOCK
LIVING IN KENYA ON $1 A MONTH AND ASHAMED TO REVEAL WHO HE IS

The Texas Republican Party even made a Web video, attacking Obama for being uncaring. It had garnered over 100,000 views on YouTube before being removed.

But the story is hardly as sensational as some made it sound. As background, Obama and his half-brother, George, share a biological father, Barack Obama Sr., but have different mothers. The father left when Obama was 2 years old, and he was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents in the U.S. and, for a few years, in Indonesia. George grew up in Kenya. Neither had their father as much of a presence in their lives. The two met briefly when George, who is about 20 years younger than Barack, was very young.

After the Italian Vanity Fair story was reported, a CNN correspondent caught up with George Obama and interviewed him on camera. When asked about the brouhaha about his economic situation, he said that the media reports made him angry, adding:

George Obama: I was brought up well. I live well even now. The magazines, they have exaggerated everything ... There are some challenges, but maybe it is just like where you [the reporter] come from, there are the same challenges.

54
mocarvin on October 21, 2008 at 08:46 PM

Under the current tax law, something like 37% of all people who file federal tax returns get it all back. The end up paying no taxes.

Apparently this will increase to something like 44% if Senator Obama's plan is enacted and many will apparently get money back on top of everything they paid in the first place.

Didn't we end 'welfare as we know it' in the Clinton Administration? It sounds like a permanent welfare state is coming back.

Doesn't this mean that police, fire, sanitation, maintenance, office, manufacturing and other workers in higher cost of living states who need more to survive i.e. New England, the mid Atlantic and Midwest will end up paying taxes so that lower paid workers in the south and west get money back from the federal government?

If almost half the workforce isn't paying any taxes, how do they end up having a stake in the government? Shouldn't everyone who works pay at least something in taxes so that they feel they are part of the government and contributing to our armed services? It doesn't seem fair if this is the plan.

Do you think that 1% of the population controlling between a third and a half of the wealth of this nation is fair? Under the Bush Administration, that number has grown significantly. And where has it got us?

How many of those police officers, and other civil servants, make more than $250K per year even in NY? I'm sure they'd love to.

Furthermore, that statement about up to 44% of taxpayers not paying taxes is intelectually dishonest at best. We all pay 6.2% on Social Security on the first roughly $100K. We all pay 1.8% for Medicare on roughly the same scale. We all pay payroll taxes.

What your side calls socialism, we call levelling the field of play. We call it giving all Americans, not just the ones with silver spoons in their mouth, a fair chance at life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The upper class of this nation has enjoyed the biggest increase in wealth over the last eight years than anytime in our history. Where has it gotten us? The same place we were in October of 1929 and the same party was in control then as is now, the Republican Party.

Re the comment of "BobVADemocratHawk"
The witholding for social security and medicare are not taxes just like the benefits of social security and medicare when you receive them are not welfare.

But paying no taxes and getting money back is welfare and that was supposed to go away with the Clinton reforms. Most of my fellow Democrats would not mistake Bill or Hillary Clinton as Republicans. It is unfortunate that you apparently do.

The question remains, is the plan designed to have almost half of the workforce pay no federal income tax? Workers in the regions I mentioned and the Pacific coast states also have a right to know if we are going to have a transparent administration.

And yes, I disagreed with Sen. Obama's support of such however, I do trust his judgement. Time will tell on this matter.

phalin is a lying f**king bitch.

AP Reports:

In Palin's view, the potential crises would be sparked by Obama's own actions. Playing off the Republican ticket's previous criticisms of the Democratic nominee, she criticized Obama for:

-Advancing the idea of invading Pakistan without that government's permission. Obama has said he would authorize an attack if the whereabouts of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden were known and Pakistan's government were unable or unwilling to go after him.

Palin's criticism, however, comes as the Bush administration has authorized attacks on al-Qaida targets within Pakistan, sparking criticism at times from Pakistan's government. McCain, for his part, has said he would pursue bin Laden "to the gates of hell."

-Advocating sitting down with "the world's worst dictators" without preconditions. Palin noted that Obama has said he would meet with the Iranian regime even though it has threatened Israel with destruction. For his part, Obama has contended that the U.S. should not be afraid to meet with its adversaries.

-Opposing the troop surge in Iraq and voting to cut funding to troops, which Palin said left those in Iraq at grave risk. Obama's lone vote against a funding measure came because the bill did not include a timetable for withdrawal of troops; he followed with a vote for funding and has supported every other funding measure.

-Offering a weak response to Russia's invasion of Georgia, which Palin said would encourage Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to invade the Ukraine. In August, when the two sides were fighting, Obama condemned Russia's action and called for diplomacy and restraint by both countries.

Campaigning later in the day in Henderson, Palin made a direct play for female voters, particularly those who backed Obama's primary rival, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"Barack Obama just couldn't bring himself to pick a woman who got 18 million votes in the primary," Palin said.

She told the crowd the situation was a "too familiar story."

"The qualifications were there, but for some reason the promotion never comes. There's always some long explanation ... some unseen barrier, some excuse," Palin told a roaring crowd in the Las Vegas suburb.

In March, during a discussion about Clinton and complaints of sexism, the Alaska governor talked about a "perceived whine" from the candidate and how it didn't help female candidates.

Palin also claimed that Obama pays the women on his Senate staff 17 percent less than the men.

Her charge, however, glossed over the central point of those who argue for gender pay equality: that there should be equal pay for equal work. In the latest report available on Obama's Senate staff salaries, there are more than two dozen separate job titles among the 60 staff members listed, making such comparisons difficult. For one of the most common titles - legislative assistant - the average salary for the five men listed was $83,010 a year. The one woman with that title was paid $83,000. For six women whose title was "staff assistant," the average was $29,162 annually. For three men with the same title, the average was $30,664.

Palin says Obama's policies could lead to crises

I've been coming to believe that the logical, rational decision-making process that Obama has is really his best asset. An analytical mind is sooo needed. I am just so pleased that he will be the next President. My guess is that the single act of electing an intelligent, thoughtful man is going to do more for our international relationships than any amount of bribing or stick-wielding. And it's very clear that we are going to need the support of the international community to help us solve our domestic problems.

Hopefully this economic disaster will do more to bring a sense of community back to America (local and global) than the brief few weeks after 9/11 before it became a political tool.

Pavel Globa, a well-known astrologist, predicts that Russia will successfully extricate from the current financial crisis, although it is not going to happen soon. Russia, the astrologist said, will suffer a lot less in comparison with the United States and the European Union. The latter may even collapse, Globa said. The West will suffer from a major crisis in two years, which will subsequently result in the change of the world order. Globa’s most famous predictions that came true: the rise of Putin and Medvedev, the collapse of the USSR, the 9/11 terrorists acts, the decline of Fidel Castro.

have a right to know if we are going to have a transparent administration.

RobertS on October 21, 2008 at 09:13 PM

Well, for certain don't vote for Palin/McCain. Have you been happy with the last eight years of transparency? You will get plenty more of it with them in charge.

* * * * *

Didn't we end 'welfare as we know it' in the Clinton Administration? It sounds like a permanent welfare state is coming back.

RobertS on October 21, 2008 at 08:46 PM

Money is obviously your real concern; so yes, if you make more than $250,000 a year your tax cut will end. If not, you will get a tax cut. Eight years was long enough for welfare for the wealthy.

I get the feeling you will next be warning us that that Obama is going to take your guns, make you have an abortion, marry a gay, and let others cheat you out of your investments in the stock market and other financial banks.

None of that will happen. The latter was done by the Republican deregulation policy. You are just going to get more affordable health care, more investment in our infrastructure and middle class, real development of alternative fuels, and a good effort to stabilize the Middle East.

Don't be afraid. Bush has left Obama with such a mess economically and militarily that he won't have the time or the money to start a counter-social revolution like the Reagan/Bush Crime Family did.

btw, eight years of Bush has proven that Reagan's voodoo economics doesn't work. The only thing that trickled down was incompetence, corruption, and a worldwide banking meltdown with the accompanying worldwide recession.

So you're worried about Obama picking your pocket? You're lucky there is anything left in it after 15 years of a Republican-dominated Congress letting their K-Street lobbyists run the show.

Fair is fair. liddy is a whole lot worse than Ayers.

While John McCain and his campaign have been continuously bringing up Barack Obama’s working with William Ayers, a former Weathermen activist when Obama was 8 years old, Gordon Liddy has contributed thousands of dollars to the campaigns of John McCain. Liddy held a fundraiser for McCain at his home and hosted him on his radio show, where McCain said to Liddy, "I'm proud of you." In his interview on Liddy’s radio show, McCain said, "Congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

Liddy is a convicted felon whose crime was to try and subvert the democratic process. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his crimes in the Watergate burglarizing of the Democratic National Committee office which was part of a scheme to steal the 1972 election through sabotage, illegal spying and dirty tricks.

Liddy has never expressed any regret for his crimes, nor has he developed any respect for the law. After the 1993 raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, he endorsed the shooting of federal agents: "Kill the sons of bitches."

Guess how they got this way, I will give you three guesses and the first two don't count.

TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS brought to them in the 1980's by the friedman gang and other raygun operatives. They have gone through the same republican crap that we have by privatizing everything, lowering the tax on corporations by 40%, creating their first billionaires and ad infinitum. The same old tired litany of trickle down economics has led to their downfall and mcgeezer wants to continue this crap for another 4 years. By then we will be broke.

And while I am at it, if the land in Prudhoe Bay is Federal land then the proceeds from the oil should go to the Federal treasury and not to the alaskan abortion called a government. The same applies to natural gas resources.

They have been paying the alaskan people a couple of thousand a year ever since Prudhoe Bay was put into production.

DENVER - The chief federal district judge in Colorado is resigning amid an investigation into allegations of misconduct.

Details of the allegations against Judge Edward W. Nottingham weren’t released. The announcement comes days after a former prostitute told a Denver television station that Nottingham asked her to lie to federal investigators. Another person had filed a complaint earlier this year citing news reports that Nottingham allegedly viewed adult Web sites on his government computer in his chambers.

A statement released by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Nottingham has "ceased judicial duties" because of “multiple complaints of misconduct.” His resignation is effective Oct. 29, the court said. Judge Wiley Y. Daniel succeeds Nottingham as chief judge

Federal judge resigns amid misconduct probe

Nottingham was a private attorney and assistant U.S. attorney in Denver before President George H.W. Bush appointed him to the federal bench in 1989. He became chief judge of the U.S. District Court for Colorado last year.

Wanted to clarify something that was posted yesterday. Someone said something about McCain killing 100+ people due to his bad piloting. I find it very important NOT to be like our opposition, and to look at facts, when in doubt. Although it is generally acknowledged that McCain was a terrible pilot, he was not responsible for the deaths on the USS Forrestal. It was a horrible accident that he was a potential victim, not a perpetrator of this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forrest_Fire

So yes, focus on his poor piloting, finishing second from last at Annapolis, but he DID NOT kill 100+ people on the Forrestal - important distinction.

Goodnight, fellow Dems, time to prepare for The Daily Show.

Damn right it's time to share the wealth.

america1st,
The story that the republicans tried to make up. Remember some of the trolls on here provided the following lie:

"THOUGH he's battling GOP accusations that he's an Ivy League elitist, Barack Obama has a lifestyle of the rich and famous, like TV show host Robin Leach, who always signed off, "Champagne wishes and caviar dreams!" While he was at a meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Michelle Obama called room service and ordered lobster hors d'oeuvres, two whole steamed lobsters, Iranian caviar and champagne, a tipster told Page Six."

This was determined to be a lie. A bald-faced LIE. Michelle was not even there. The paper that reported the story admitted it was a lie.

Now consider the TRUTH that is out on Gov. Palin.

In October 2007, Palin brought daughter Bristol along on a trip to New York for a women's leadership conference. Plane tickets from Anchorage to La Guardia Airport for $1,385.11 were billed to the state, records show, and mother and daughter shared a room for four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House hotel, which overlooks Central Park.

MSNBC reports on the latest Wall Street Journal Poll

With two weeks to go until Election Day, Obama now leads his Republican rival by 10 points among registered voters, 52 to 42 percent, up from 49 to 43 percent two weeks ago.

...

Sarah Palin. Fifty-five percent of respondents say she’s not qualified to serve as president if the need arises, up five points from the previous poll.

In addition, for the first time, more voters have a negative opinion of her than a positive one. In the survey, 47 percent view her negatively, versus 38 percent who see her in a positive light.

Governor Palin attacked the poll stating that the Wall Street Journal did not survey "real" Americans.

"Here is McCain's Health Care Plan.
1. He will no longer provide a tax break for the premiums that employers pay for their employee's health Care plans.

2. Consequently, your employees will not longer pay for you health care plans. YOU WILL. They will add the cost of the plan to your income. If you have a family and you make $50,000, your new income will be $62,000 (increased taxes)

3. If you decided you can't afford your employer's health care plan then you are free to find your own. Good luck with that because now you will face insurance "underwriting" and if you have pre-conditions like HBP or survived cancer, you will either have to pay more and won't get insurance at all.

4. McCain's plan will force another 20 million people off the health care rolls.
At work you have group healt. Under McCain's plan you will be paying the same amount you pay for COBRA and it ain't cheap.
5. John McCain will give you a $5000 tax credit - which depending on your taxable income and deductions could only be $2000. Now where do you get the other $10,000?

6. John McCain will take $1.3 trillion from Medicare to pay for his plan."

Now he says he didn’t mean it that way and he was just trying to rev up a campaign rally.

"I genuinely did not recall making the statement and, after reading it, there is no doubt that it came out completely the wrong way. I actually was trying to work to keep the crowd as respectful as possible, so this is definitely not what I intended," Hayes said in a statement for Politico.

Palin bought $150K of clothes with YOUR money

As the Politico reported yesterday, the RNC has spend around $150,000 on clothes and accessories for Sarah Palin and her family. Note that Sarah Palin didn't spend her own money on all these fancy clothes and jewellery, it was someone else's money. And who's money was it? YOUR money. If you have contributed to the McCain-Palin campaign, it was your money. But as the McCain-Palin campaign has accepted public financing, it wasn't only campaign donors' money. It was also taxpayers' money. YOUR money.

And what can you buy with $150,000, except buy expensive clothes in "anti-American" places like New York, probably from "unAmerican foreign" brands*?

Sarah Pain could have bought new cars for herself and her husband and her two children who are old enough to drive, plus a new snowmobile and a truck to transport it in.
She could have bought enough petrol, even at the current prices, to drive more than a million miles in those cars, more than the average American drives in a lifetime.
She could have paid for college tuition for four of her kids.
She could have paid of 30% of the cost of her half a million dollar home.
If she didn't have health insurance from the state, as she does, she could have paid 12 years or so of top class health insurance for her family.

Job losses could fuel foreclosure problem

If 2008 was a record year for mortgages entering foreclosure, 2009 could look even worse: While home-price declines have been driving foreclosure starts recently, mounting job losses could add another layer of stress on American homeowners, the chief economist of the Mortgage Bankers Association said on Tuesday.

A recession appears to be underway, according to the MBA's annual economic forecast, which projects negative economic growth through the middle of next year. The MBA presented its forecast to reporters Tuesday at its annual convention, being held in San Francisco.

Unemployment also will likely accelerate, perhaps reaching 7.7% by the end of next year, making it tougher for some people to stay in their homes...

Sarah Palin, Socialist

Every day, Sarah Palin accuses Barack Obama of being a Socialist. Every day, Right Wing talk show blowhards froth at the mouth about "income redistribution." Yet in Alaska in 2008, Sarah Palin raised taxes on Oil companies to redistribute wealth. Sarah Palin a Socialist? Youbetcha!

Reading/comprehension problems there, OLD man?

Republicans like Sarah Palin hate two things with a vengance: higher taxes and what they call "income redistribution." In GOP World, putting higher taxes on rich individuals and corporations to pull money into the State - so that this money can then be redistributed to the "undeserving" Poor and Middle Classes - is the very essence of Socialist behavior.

[...]

Yet, look at Palin's actions as Governor of Alaska...... After all, what is putting higher taxes on Oil Companies, in order to give rebate checks to Alaska's citizens, but "Socialism" of the first magnitude?

It's the height of irony, hypocrisy, and sleaze..... here's Sarah Palin, whipping up a frenzy of hatred against Barack for wanting to raise taxes and commit the "evil" crime of redistributing wealth. Yet Palin is popular in Alaska for what? For raising taxes and redistributing wealth.

By the GOP's own definition, Sarah Palin is a Socialist.

165
Barbi on October 22, 2008 at 06:02 AM

Alaska was BOUGHT by the entire USA, and is therefore OWNED by ALL the citizens. We all should get a slice of the pie. And just how "productive" are snowmobile salesmen? Seems like a fairly laid back job to me. Salesmen don't "produce" anything. Yew betcha.

It happened in San Francisco today.

At the annual convention of the Mortgage Bankers' Assn., former White House guru Karl Rove debated the 2008 presidential election -- and the current economic meltdown -- with former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell.

Up on the stage walks a well-dressed woman, name as yet unknown. First she complained that there was no woman on the panel. Then she drew out handcuffs and tried to arrest Rove for treason.

She was quickly ushered off the stage.

Protests, shouted from the audience, continued during the debate, described by one local television reporter as "a very lively back and forth."

Rove tended to blame everything on the Democrats, including deregulation that led to the subprime mortgage mess. "So the regulators in 2005 were the Republicans, and the deregulators, the anti-regulators, the let-them-do-anything-they-want crowd, were all Democrats, with all due respect," said Rove.

None taken.

Anyway, perhaps the most remarkable exchange was when Rove tried to claim that the Democrats were being unduly negative in their attacks on Republican standard-bearer John McCain. He said:

Yesterday John Kerry, your nominee of your party in 2004, stands up and said if John McCain was asked the question of whether he wears boxers or briefs his answer would be Depends. I think that is pretty much under-the-table and pretty nasty.

Mitchell could barely suppress a bemused smile. Perhaps he was thinking about all the dirty tricks that Rove is alleged to have committed -- including against McCain -- while running two presidential campaigns for George W. Bush. The Maine Democrat said:

I have to say I feel like Dorothy in the Land of Oz, hearing you lecture about negative campaigning.

Look at the video.

Oh, wouldn't you be livid if you had sent the RNC a contribution for this election, and found out it had clothed Palin, her husband, her kids? They NEEDED to dress the baby, after all he was what they used to try and hide Bristol's pregnancy with him draped across her lap.

"Since her selection as John McCain's running mate, the Republican National Committee spent more than $150,000 on clothing and make-up for Gov. Sarah Palin, her husband, and even her infant son, it was reported on Tuesday evening.

That entertaining scoop -- which came by way of Politico -- sent almost immediate reverberations through the presidential race. A statement from McCain headquarters released hours after the article bemoaned the triviality of the whole affair.

"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it's remarkable that we're spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses," said spokesperson Tracey Schmitt. "It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."

But even the most timid of Democrats are unlikely to heed this call for civility. For starters, the story has the potential to dampen enthusiasm among GOP activists and donors at a critical point in the presidential race. It also creates a huge PR headache for the McCain ticket as it seeks to make inroads among voters worried about the current economic crisis.

Mainly, however, Democrats (in this scenario) are not prone to forgiveness. After all, it was during this same campaign cycle that Republicans belittled the $400 haircut that former Sen. John Edwards had paid for with his own campaign money (the funds were later reimbursed). And yet, the comparison to that once-dominant news story is hardly close: if Edwards had gotten one of his legendary haircuts every singe week, it would still take him 7.2 years to spend what Palin has spent. Palin has received the equivalent of $2,500 in clothes per day from places such as Saks Fifth Avenue (where RNC expenditures totaled nearly $50,000) and Neiman Marcus (where the governor had a $75,000 spree).

What does that say for Palins' views on education?

Maybe he meant IT depends....but the other meaning is funny.

Rove? Woo still listens to Rove? Rove who subverts democracy? Rove who recently was almost arrested by a 50+ year old woman? (hehehe) A citizens arrest for treason no less...very funny seeing his face.

Anyone notice that the GOP are using a lot of lines of dialogue from the movie "the American President''? Are they PAYING for using those lines? Tim Murphy, Repub from PA has an ad..''these are serious times and we need serious answers'' there was a woman at a McCain rally who said a shortened version of this...They're so thirsty for it they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there's no water, they'll drink the sand.

For as much as they claim to hate hollywood (forget that McCain will be using Schwatzenegger in OH) they use scripts rather than the energy to come up with their own stuff.

231
mammalicious on October 22, 2008 at 09:09 AM

If this were a Democrat, they would be getting hung by the Republicans and the press:

State Finance Director Kim Garnero told The Associated Press she has not reviewed the Palins' travel expense forms, so she could not say whether the daughters' travel with their mother would meet the definition of official business.

After Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain chose Palin his running mate and reporters asked for the records, Palin ordered changes to previously filed expense reports for her daughters' travel.

In the amended reports, Palin added phrases such as "First Family attending" and "First Family invited" to explain the girls' attendance.

"The governor said, 'I want the purpose and the reason for this travel to be clear,'" said Linda Perez, state director of administrative services.

When Palin released her family's tax records as part of her vice presidential campaign, some tax experts questioned why she did not report the children's state travel reimbursements as income.

But some organizers of these events said they were surprised when the Palin children showed up uninvited, or said they agreed to a request by the governor to allow the children to attend.

I'm waiting for the picture to get on the internets showing Palin in an evening gown vs a everyday woman in a working class pants suit---- Saks vs Pennys ----- $3,000 vs $100

I think someone needs to do that and we need to see it over and over again.

It was ok for the RNC to hammer away at non-issues but now they want to talk about issues when a non-issue appears to make them all look like asses?

I feel sorry for the people who sent money into the RNC and to McCain only to learn this morning that their money probably went for designer diapers - (for whom the diapers went to - well you make that call :) ).

THIS WOMAN IS TRYING TO START A WITCH HUNT!

"After a first-term Republican seeking re-election to Congress questioned Barack Obama's patriotism, fundraising for her Democratic challenger soared."

The Walmart Mom never spent a dime in Walmart, not if she could somehow shuffle it under the Expense report for state of Alaska.

She is no better than Ted Stevens, and should be the next one to end up in court.

Let's watch her let the campaign try and get those clothes back! She would spill ink on them before she let them go.

Typical Criminal, Corrupt Republican !!

"Rep. Michelle Bachmann’s call for an investigation of anti-American views among her colleagues helped fuel a fund-raising bonanza for her opponent and is now throwing her re-election into question."

They (the $150,000 worth of clothes) are supposed to go to charity...what they aren't telling you is that Palin is her own favorite charity.

The personal trashing of Sarah Palin only reenforces the stupidity and banal character that epitomizes the dregs of the Demo. party.
