Here we go, more bailouts, this time the auto industry.
Any problem that you throw money at is not a solution, its a bandaid.
The real problem is the "refuse to change" policies that the auto industry has taken for years. They have fought every improvement and every opportunity to become better for decades.
When the Japanese first kicked their butts in the 70's, the big three fought the higher gas mileage smaller foreign cars by getting baled out by our government, and making modest changes by building mid-size cars.
For years, the industry has been building gas guzzlers and spending mega-bucks in advertisements to try to convince the American public that this is what we need, verses the better made, higher gas mileage of foreign made vehicles.
Now they are asking once again for a bail out. Just throwing money at them is not the solution.
Fire all executives and have them walk away without a penny in bonuses. Use the money to retool for hybrids and fuel efficient vehicles even SUV's and Pickups.
But if this is just a one time deal for them to change for the better, then it will be all for not. They must put in a process to continue to improve over and over again and eliminate waste in their processes.
They need to continue to search for ways to make their vehicles better, faster (process), cheaper, at a higher quality. Because the rest of the world is, American businesses tend to hold on to what worked in the past.
obama is building a leadership team that will be able to get important stuff done on day one. smart is gonna be a big improvement over stupid.

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) _ Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader used a racial epithet to insult Barack Obama in a message posted Wednesday, describing the president-elect in demeaning terms that imply he does the bidding of whites.
The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Ayman al-Zawahri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites, that Obama is "the direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.
In al-Qaida's first response to Obama's victory, al-Zawahri also called the president-elect — along with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice — "house negroes."
Speaking in Arabic, al-Zawahri uses the term "abeed al-beit," which literally translates as "house slaves." But al-Qaida supplied English subtitles of his speech that included the translation as "house negroes."
The message also includes old footage of speeches by Malcolm X in which he explains the term, saying black slaves who worked in their white masters' house were more servile than those who worked in the fields. Malcolm X used the term to criticize black leaders he accused of not standing up to whites.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the latest message was just "more despicable comments from a terrorist."
The 11-minute 23-second video features the audio message by al-Zawahri, who appears only in a still image, along with other images, including one of Obama wearing a Jewish skullcap as he meets with Jewish leaders. In his speech, al-Zawahri refers to a Nov. 5 U.S. airstrike attack in Afghanistan, meaning the video was made after that date.
Al-Zawahri said Obama's election has not changed American policies he said are aimed at oppressing Muslims and others.
"America has put on a new face, but its heart full of hate, mind drowning in greed, and spirit which spreads evil, murder, repression and despotism continue to be the same as always," the deputy of al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden said.
He said Obama's plan to shift troops to Afghanistan is doomed to failure, because Afghans will resist.
"Be aware that the dogs of Afghanistan have found the flesh of your soldiers to be delicious, so send thousands after thousands to them," he said.
Al-Zawahri did not threaten specific attacks, but warned Obama that he was "facing a Jihadi (holy war) awakening and renaissance which is shaking the pillars of the entire Islamic world; and this is the fact which you and your government and country refuse to recognize and pretend not to see."
He said Obama's victory showed Americans acknowledged that President George W. Bush's policies were a failure and that the result was an "admission of defeat in Iraq."
But Obama's professions of support for Israel during the election campaign "confirmed to the Ummah (Islamic world) that you have chosen a stance of hostility to Islam and Muslims," al-Zawahri said.
One sunny day in January 2009, an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue , where he'd been sitting on a park bench. The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Bush. I've told you already that Mr. Bush is no longer the President and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?" The old man looked at the Marine, smiled, and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it."
The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir."
Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have been indicted on separate charges related to alleged prisoner abuse in federal detention centers, Willacy County, Texas, District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra told CNN Tuesday.
The indictment stems from Cheney’s investment in the Vanguard Group — an investment management company that reportedly has interests in the prison companies in charge of the detention centers, according to The Associated Press. It also charges Gonzales halted an investigation into abuse at the detention centers while he was attorney general.

That was o.k. when Ted Stevens was a senator, he could use his political clout to gouge the federal gorvernment out of a few choice earmark projects to inject into their economy. Less oil mony and fewer pork barrel handouts makes for a difficult time for an Alaskan governor, expecially one with the intellectual deficits of a Sarah Palin.

Osama bin Laden's no. 2 henchmnen has made it very clear that regardless of holds the office of president of the United States, al-Qaida's war against the West and the US is not going to stop. The oil money is Alaska will still be there, possibly even more if what I heard on NPR this morning is true. Senator-Elect Mark Begich stated emphatically that he will push for the opening up of oil exploration in ANWR. I think most people thought that the defeat of Senator Ted Stevens was the key to stopping exploration for oil in ANWR but Begish seems to be putting the interests of the state of Alaska before all else.
CalDemo: I think that it's funny how Hypocrite Barbie/Bible Spice shrilly 'ranted' against 'pork barrel spending' and with everything that you just listed, it's all that she's going to have to fall back on. Good morning all fellow dems. I hope that someone can help me out here. (Gregg - you always know this kind stuff!) While doing other stuff, I was listening to some of the hearings this morning. It sounds to me like the auto industry is not trying to 'get in' on the bailout for the financial industry. I kept hearing the term 'bridge loan' used and saying that it would come - not from bailout monies - but from an emergency fund dedicated to that specific purpose. I tried to listen about GMAC and Ford Motor Credit and see if they - as part of the finance industry related to auto industry but not part therefore, we looking for bailout money.
Also, they talked about 'retooling' already being in the works and how Ford hopes to the be #1 hybrid producer in the world within 24 months and how GM is shooting for flex fuel engines and electric power alternatives.
How much of that is correct? Where are they - actually - on retooling away from gas guzzlers and worrying about 'fuel efficiency' and focusing on changing the industry to eliminate the need for imported oil altogether?
They make it sound like are only a few months away and just need this 'loan' to tide them over? Somehow - I doubt that.
Help, anybody?

Washington - The Justice Department has agreed to pay for a private lawyer to defend former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales against allegations that he encouraged officials to inject partisan politics into the department's hiring and firing practices.
Lawyers from the Justice Department's civil division often represent department employees who're sued in connection with their official actions. However, Gonzales' attorney recently revealed in court papers that the Justice Department had approved his request to pay private attorney's fees arising from the federal lawsuit.
the fact that we (Americans) have not been on the cutting edge in this is absolutely shameful and has hurt our country economically!

First in an occasional series giving advice to the new president.
Since this is, by all accounts, a "defining moment" in American history, let's redefine the way we think about health. Over the past decade, a rich vein of research has detailed the links between large social forces - from income and discrimination to education and neighborhood safety - and a community's physical and mental well-being.
Last summer, a pair of fascinating reports - overlooked in the US press - drew on this perspective to suggest a blueprint for the next administration's health agenda. Both reports stepped back from our conventional explanations of health - "individual lifestyle" and "biomedical miracle" - to analyze the structural factors behind disease and suffering in our society.
"The Measure of America," published by the Social Science Research Council, an independent research organization based in New York, examined US health through a novel lens: the human development model that the United Nations has applied around the world - but, until now, never to the world's richest and most powerful country.
Underscoring how far we lag in our promise, the report documented how the roughly $5.2 billion we spend every day on healthcare yields a pitiable return on investment. For example, US life expectancy ranks below that of Chile, Costa Rica, and nearly every European and Nordic country. The US infant mortality rate is on par with that of Croatia, Cuba, Estonia, and Poland. Within the United States, stark health inequities persist along socioeconomic and racial/ethnic lines.
What's behind these dismal facts? Not just sedentary habits or calorie-laden diets, although obesity is a major factor in America's relatively faltering position. Rather, it's how public- and private-sector priorities shape health. As the other groundbreaking document - the World Health Organization's final report from the Commission on Social Determinants of Health, "Closing the gap in a generation" - explains: "The unequal distribution of health-damaging experiences is not in any sense a 'natural' phenomenon but the result of a toxic combination of poor social policies and programs, unfair economic arrangements, and bad politics."
And so, the defining moment. If President-elect Barack Obama wants to live up to his ambitious vision, then he must combine social and health policy. First and foremost, push for universal healthcare. "Just like smoking and diabetes, lack of health insurance is an early death sentence," said Sarah Burd-Sharps, a former UN administrator and co-author of "The Measure of America." Every rich nation in the world except ours has figured out how to provide health coverage to virtually every citizen - and at far lower cost per capita.
We had Psychiatrists in the past look at Steve's postings, and they agreed this was a very sick man. Danny is the same. Somehow he stumbled in here, and has gotten worse over time. I would bet his wife has left him by now. No self respecting woman would be connected with someone this ill !

I had to smile even broader when I realized not a one of them had the balls to come in here that night or even for a few days----other than to just lurk and watch our JOY! It must have been so hard to pull their heads back out of their rearends!!! :)

Alaska is one of the few states, perhaps the only one, that's not broke. That oil rich beautiful and scarcely populated region is really positioned well to weather this turmoiltuous period in the American economy. Alaska certainly has been blessed with an abudance of natural resources to be sure!

I imagine that she is sending out her scented resumes to every last person in political power as we speak in order to obtain "experience". Surely she wouldn't lower herself to work up to a position through "community organizing" or other forms of low-pay public service.

How have we come to a situation where, as some polls suggest, most Australians are so concerned about dangerous climate change that they will put aside the very tools and technologies that have sustained clean air, clean water, nutritious food and long life? More importantly, is the perceived danger real and will the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions avert the perceived danger? Although there are many uncertainties to be resolved, it is clear that the community has been the subject of more than two decades of heavily biased propaganda.
In spite of claims to the contrary, there is no consensus of scientists supporting the findings and recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. There exists a large and vocal group of highly qualified dissenters (often denigrated as sceptics, deniers or worse). In the absence of computer models there would be little credence given to the view that the relatively small warming of the second half of the twentieth century was due to carbon dioxide emissions; there would certainly be no credence given to the possibility of irreversible runaway global warming over the coming century.
Cool heads would note that most of the earth's surface is either ocean or freely transpiring vegetation and that surface evaporation will continue to constrain surface temperature rise, as it always has done. The likely magnitude of human-caused global warming is so low that it will not be discernible against the background of natural variability in the climate record. Thus national or internationally co-ordinated efforts to impose carbon dioxide emission reduction for the purpose of preventing climate change will be a tremendous waste of resources.
The real danger is that government-instigated measures to drastically downsize a wide range of fossil-fuel-dependent industries in order to achieve emission reduction targets will actually be effective. Such success will destroy jobs and will limit future development opportunities, with no discernible impact on climate. Then the government will realise that it is much easier to change the economy than to change the climate, and it will also find that the direction and impacts of change will be equally unpredictable.
Atmospheric scientist William Kininmonth is the former head of Australia's National Climate Centre. He was an Australian representative and consultant to the World Meteorological Organization on climate issues and is the author of Climate Change: A Natural Hazard (Multi-science Publishing Co., 2004). He will be among the speakers at the Australian Environment Foundation's annual conference, "A Climate for Change", in Canberra this month.

Houston - A grand jury in South Texas indicted U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and former attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Tuesday for "organized criminal activity" related to alleged abuse of inmates in private prisons.
The indictment has not been seen by a judge, who could dismiss it.
The grand jury in Willacy County, in the Rio Grande Valley near the U.S.-Mexico border, said Cheney is "profiteering from depriving human beings of their liberty," according to a copy of the indictment obtained by Reuters.

Washington - The Treasury secretary, Henry M. Paulson Jr., on Tuesday rejected pleas to use money from the $700 billion bailout program to help homeowners avoid foreclosure or to stave off bankruptcy by Detroit's Big Three automakers.
Facing a barrage of complaints from Democratic lawmakers that he was ignoring the will of Congress, Mr. Paulson dug in his heels and said he wanted to put money only into financial institutions.
"The primary purpose of the bill was to protect our financial system from collapse," Mr. Paulson told the House Financial Services Committee. "The rescue package was not intended to be an economic stimulus or an economic recovery package."
Democrats pummeled the Treasury secretary in response, with some accusing him of carrying out a "bait and switch" by discarding his original plan and others expressing fury that the Treasury had allocated $290 billion for banks and insurance companies but nothing for individual homeowners.
"The bill is replete with authorization to you, not simply to buy up mortgages, but in effect to do some spending," said Representative Barney Frank, citing a four-page list of provisions. "Clearly part of this was not just to stabilize, but to reduce the number of foreclosures, for good macroeconomic reasons."

Islamabad, Pakistan - A suspected American missile bombarded a village deep inside Pakistani territory Wednesday, officials said, marking what appears to be the first time the U.S. has struck beyond the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan.
Six alleged militants were killed.
Hours after the strike, a large Islamist political party warned it would block two major supply routes for U.S and NATO forces in Afghanistan that run through Pakistan unless the attacks ended.
The attacks have killed scores of suspected al-Qaida and Taliban militants in the tribal regions that are a rumored hiding place of Osama bin Laden, but have enraged the country's civilian leadership.
"If these missiles attacks continue, then we will ask the people to create hurdles in the way of supplies for NATO," Qazi Hussain Ahmed, chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, told reporters.
The party has shown it can easily mobilize thousands of supporters at short notice. The supply lines have never been blocked by protests but militants and criminals often attack trucks traveling with them.
Two missiles destroyed a house in Indi Khel village in Bannu district, Javed Marwat, a local government official, told The Associated Press. Two Pakistani intelligence officials said their agents reported that militants from Central Asia were among the six killed.

A major Al-Qaeda operative of Arab origin was among six militants killed overnight in a suspected US missile strike in northwest Pakistan, a senior security official told AFP Wednesday.Security sources identified the militant as Abdullah Azam al-Saudi, a senior member in Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.
"He was a senior commander of Al-Qaeda and was involved in recruiting and training of fighters," the senior official said.
According to US intelligence shared with Pakistan, al-Saudi was the main link between Al-Qaeda's senior command and Taliban networks in the Pakistani border region, an Islamabad-based senior security official said.
"He was the man coordinating between Al-Qaeda and Taliban commanders on this side of the border, and also involved in recruiting and training fighters," the official told AFP.
He is the second high-profile Al-Qaeda operative killed in recent US missile strikes in Pakistan's rugged tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
Egyptian Al-Qaeda operative Abu Jihad al-Masri, described by the US as Al-Qaeda's propaganda chief, was killed in a missile strike in Pakistan in the early hours of November 1.

MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell asked Sen. Arlen Specter about Barack Obama's choice of Eric Holder as Attorney General. Specter said that he wouldn't hold up Holder's nomination due to his involvement in the pardon of Marc Rich.
"I would be prepared to move ahead very promptly with hearings, move into the substance of the matter, ask the important questions, look for any documents that might be relevant and as fast as we can move through, I am prepared to decided it one way or the other," said Specter.
Specter believes that the Department of Justice needs to be "reprofessionalized" after the tenure of Alberto Gonzales.
Specter said, "This business of wiretapping is not in order in accordance with Constitutional rights and where you have the immunity granted to the telephone companies, that is still a festering wound and some speculation as to whether that will be asserted by a new administration."

That's not exactly accurate, Doo-Bee. The 18th Amendment was repealed by the 21st Amendment. The 22nd Amendment limits a POTUS and VPOTUS to two terms. The mechanism is in place to repeal or amend any Constitutional Amendment. Granted, the U.S. Constitution is much more difficult to amend the CA Constitution and rightfully so however, CA Prop 8 amends the CA Constitution.
The CA Supreme Court, while agreeing to hear the case of repealing said amendment, pretty much has their hands tied in as much as their duty is to interpret the CA Consitution exactly like the SCOTUS interprets the U.S. Constitution. This will have to go to the federal courts for resolution. Going to the CA Supreme Court is a formality.
My guess is the 9th Circuit will agree with the pro-gay marriage lobby and this will end up in front of the SCOTUS. If it does, look for a 5-4 decision one way or the other. It'll come done to how Justice Kennedy votes, I'm sure.

Maybe those Pug Congressional idiots from the South should consider ALL the jobs that will be lost if the "Big Three" go under, all for their quest to kill the UAW.
Gee, beer vendors, tattoo artists, ushers, traffic control people, etc. ALL out of work. Ad to that the beer distributors (both ON and OFF season).
Hell, Martinsville is known as "Garage Mahal". Half of that towns economy depends on NASCAR.
I can just imagine all the ad revenue disappearing and the TV Networks dropping NASCAR because nobody will want to see a bunch of KIAs "race" a bunch of Hyundais.
