Hello all good Dems! Wow - I know Pres. Elect Obama has not yet taken office but somehow today actually feels different! I am now actually hopeful for this country - something I could not say with any real conviction until 11:00 PM EST last night. It's such a relief!

Also, does anyone know what finally happened in Alaska - with that criminal Stevens? The last time that I saw a report, he had a very narrow lead with about 45% of the vote counted. Also, about the Oregan Senate Race?

8
marymac_memphis on November 5, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Yesterday I spent the day as a "Florida Voting Rights Attorney" on behalf of the DNC and the Obama Campaign. I was assigned to an almost completely African American precinct from 7 AM to 7 PM. I am a white, female, 48 year old attorney. Along with two other lawyers, we dealt with about 400 people throughout the day. Most of them had no problems voting, although a few did have to vote provisionally. We answered questions for people, helped check their precinct assignments for them, and passed out sample ballots while they stood in line. These folks started lining up to vote about 5:45 AM and at times the lines were so long that the wait was up to two hours. No one minded, no one complained, I only saw one person leave before voting, and mostly everyone was happy to be there. They all agreed that they were willing to wait as long as it took to cast their ballot in this incredibly special and historical election.

The mood was more like a party or a concert than an election voting line. During the busiest and longest waiting time of the morning, people from the neighborhood showed up with donuts, OJ and water and GAVE them away for FREE - no strings attached, no campaigning, just folks being neighborly. This was hours before the Obama Campaign sent out a mass text message asking supporters to bring water to people standing in line to vote. When the people in line thanked these good Samaritans for the sustenance, they in turn thanked the voters for coming out to vote. Later in the day, these same people returned with water, juice boxes, fried chicken and more donuts.

At the end of the day, we calculated that approximately 52% of this blue collar, working class community voted that day. Add to that the early voting tallies and the absentee ballots (the league of women voters rep said they had collected about 300 of those in advance) and you have some impressive voting numbers. The unofficial consensus was that the rate was about 65 - 70%. Wow.

I have voted in numerous Presidential and local elections since 1978 (30 years worth) and have never seen anything like what I experienced on 11/4/08.
I am completely overwhelmed and I have never been so moved, or so proud to be an American. Every generation has its defining moment. For some, it was the end of WWII, for others it is the day Kennedy was shot or when a man first walked on the moon. While I have lived through some of these events and they have impacted me strongly, the day that I will remember as the defining moment of my political life, is the day we elected a black man to the highest office in the land, as the acknowledged leader of the free world. I will never forget this day or this election as long as I live.

"Four long years - I have been on this blog. Four long years I have put up with the trolls. Four long years of hating what Bush has done tot his country. NO MORE! ENOUGH!"

Four years ago, I was a bit of a regular here (*waves back at Doo-Bee-Doo*), and while I still peeked in a lot, the trolls' moronic messages of hate and lies kept me from posting. It just wasn't worth it.

Last night, I watched people celebrating in Grant Park - a place where I have left many footprints in the past, which made me feel I was a little bit there too. (Which was kinda cool.)

Today, a different Europe looks at a different America - one we can start to respect again.

Happy Obamaday everybody!

PS. Obama '12! ;-)

Since Nixon's Southern Strategy in 1968 the Republican Party has been the party of Red Baiting, Religious Bigotry, and Racism. These tactics used in varying proportion gave them control of the White House over most of my lifetime.

As such it is not surprising that the only three Democratic Presidents since the Civil Rights era were southerners that ran as conservatives.

But now for the first time in forty years, the three "R"s of Republicanism completely failed.

Americans finally came to grasp the meaning of the words "by their fruits ye shall know them".

What are the fruits of the present regime's hate based initiative? What any sensible citizen and decent human being should expect: Market Mania, Economic depression, and War.

Undoing the damage of the past forty years will be difficult, but the mandate is clear and the time is right.

I am sick of being called un-American, un-patriotic, un-Christian and Godless because I am a democrat and I am so proud of the American People for standing up and finally saying - ENOUGH! I just wish that we had - politically speaking, burried that witch (with a capital "B"), Bachman in Minnesota! I am in Tennessee and I have several Republicans I would love to be 'rid of' but none in the country raise my anger like the Bachman witch! Who ever runs against her in two years, will receive contributions from the get go from me!

And, thanks to the trolls for demonstrating the ignorance, viciousness and obsoleteness of the republican party for all to see. Obama's Path to Greatness: Health Care as Stimulus
Wednesday 05 November 2008
by: Dean Baker, t r u t h o u t | Perspective

President Obama will have a historic opportunity to establish himself as a truly great president in his first days in office. He can take advantage of the current economic crisis to announce plans to jump start national health care insurance. Extending health care insurance can be an effective stimulus that will provide an immediate boost to the economy.

Ditto! However,I don`t think it will stop the Kool-Aid drinkers who call Barack the Anti-Christ and other things. Some people do this to try to convince other people through fear,so I agree it`s so rewarding for the people to say enough. It is amazing in a sense how far the country had to be pushed to say enough. It`s time to be thankful that we will be heading in a new direction.

When the trolls and the extreme right start to attack his proposals we need to be ready to keep things in control on a grassroots level.

This blog was born out of a movement that rebelled against a past time when people would only take the republican party line as gospel.

But now that the Democratic Party is in charge, we should remember to always stay vigilante with what's going on.

Complacency is our biggest enemy.

But we should never forget to spend time smelling the roses and enjoying life.

Life without enjoyment is hell.

Why We Vote
Wednesday 29 October 2008

Along with the ugliness, this election has produced a tremendous number of grace notes: the recent report of employees at an Indiana call center walking out rather than read anti-Obama talking points; the McCain supporters who confronted and shunned an Islamophobe outside a rally (captured on YouTube); and the story (reported on Politico) of how a McCain backer in line to vote early in Hamilton County, Ohio, lent his NASCAR jacket to three elderly Jewish women after overhearing that they would not be allowed to enter the polling place wearing their Obama gear. While chatting with the women, who spoke of the alliance of Jews and blacks during the civil rights struggle, the man was seized with the desire to be on the right side of history; when it was time for him to cast his ballot, he voted for Obama as well.

This last story gets at something profound about why we go to the trouble of voting. We vote in order to change the country, to exercise our rights, to make our voices heard and a hundred other clichés as shopworn as they are true. But we also vote because it places us in direct fellowship with other citizens; we vote because it is a secular sacrament, an act of civic solidarity. Because it is the ultimate declaration that we are, indeed, all in this together.

When I worked the phones for Obama, there were still times when I had to walk away and just enjoy the life that was around me.

Now that Obama has won, there will still be times when thinking about politics is not appropriate.

But as Americans we should always be ready for that next big challenge that faces us in the future.

She doesn't have the financial resources to be a competitive contender for the presidency.

The only money she can raise are from republican donors who have already lost millions of dollars.

A sarah palin candidacy in 2012 would ensure that Obama is President for eight years.

Good afternoon fellow Democrats. Yes we did!

JaunC on November 5, 2008 at 02:32 PM

Speaking as one of those moderate blue dog Democrats you can rest assured that we will assist the Obama Administration in any way that we can. We have fought long and hard to get to this place and we darn sure aren't going to give it up on some crackpot legislation.

As a moderate, President Elect Obama can expect support from us on any issue that lies somewhere between the 2000 version McCain on the right and Kennedy on the left. Senator Elect Mark Warner from the Commonwealth of VA is a prime example of the types of Democrats that were elected last night as is now our senior senator, Jim Webb (D-VA).

The political pendulum has now swung our way. in 2002 it was on the far right. In 2004 it was on the center right. In 2006, it was dead center. Now in 2008, it has swung to the center left and, IMHO, as long as we govern from center left, we'll keep the Congress and the White House for at least two decades and maybe more.

51
BobVADemocratHawk on November 5, 2008 at 02:52 PM

There has been some speculation that current landslide to the left will only result in a soon expected shift to the right.

But the demographics aren't there to be believed.

The republican party is now a party for a minority of the extreme right wing.

If the Latino population become a reliable vote for the Democratic Party, Texas may even become a swing state.

But the extreme right are filled with anti-immigrant racists and the hispanic vote will not support it.

Good afternoon, all.

Sometimes it takes a little Christmas.....

Obama victory sparks cheers around the globe

By JOHN LEICESTER, Associated Press Writer

PARIS – Barack Obama's election as America's first black president unleashed a renewed love for the United States after years of dwindling goodwill, and many said Wednesday that U.S. voters had blazed a trail that minorities elsewhere could follow...

Many expressed amazement and satisfaction that the United States could overcome centuries of racial strife and elect an African-American as president.

"This is the fall of the Berlin Wall times ten," Rama Yade, France's black junior minister for human rights, told French radio. "America is rebecoming a New World.

"On this morning, we all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding before our eyes," she said.

In Britain, The Sun newspaper borrowed from Neil Armstrong's 1969 moon landing in describing Obama's election as "one giant leap for mankind."...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_elections_world_view

The American Dream lives around the world. Bin Lauden must be disheartened and very worried that we have gotten back our bearings. Our Founding Father's dream of democracy is alive and well.

We are that "Shining Light on the Hill" that Reagan spoke about. He would be as proud of us today as Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, Lincoln, the Roosevelts, Eisenhower, and Kennedy.

We are so much better than the last eight years of Republican failures.

The rest of the world looks to us again for leadership. We have defeated the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 and we didn't have to go to war to do it.

Strong, wise men and women lead by example not by the sword or lies.

Oh, how corrupt and vile were the likes of neocons like Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich. We must never allow our country to go down that destructive path again. It almost destroyed our free enterprise system, our Constitution, and our honor.

We must rebuild what has been broken in our military and economic markets and never allow greedy, power-hungry madmen ever to stand in the way of the American Dream.

So you say. President Elect Obama is no President Carter. He knows how to work with the Congress to accomplish a fiscally sound agenda.

One thing the conservatives are going to have to wrap their brains around though is the fact that they've mismanaged the fiscal policy of this nation so poorly, we're looking at a trillion dollar deficit next year. Of course, they're going to try to pin that debacle on us. It'll be up to President Elect Obama to edcaute the masses as to why it's going to take us at least twenty years to clean up this God-awful mess created by the Bush Administration.

If he does, I stand by my original prediction that we'll contrl the Congress and the White House for at least twenty years. If he does not, then he'll end up just like President Carter.

Amazing, isn't it? There are people who think that taxes are going to go down, and that the government is going to pay for their mortgages.. all because they backed Obama. Got news, folks, before the end of his first year, taxes will go up to pay for the unemployment for people fired because Obama bin Laden raised taxes on corporations, and they let go of people to afford to pay the tax increase... and someone said Obama is smarter than 90% of the foreign leaders: how many of them do you hear the word "Uh" or "Um" as much as Obama??? Sorry, but the truth hurts sometimes, doesn't it? He won't take my gun or bible away from me, I promise you that...

BobVADemocratHawk on November 5, 2008 at 02:52 PM

Bob,

That sounds just about right to me, too....as long as we are not entering another Great Depression. Oh, how I wish Obama's advisers could get into the Executive and start auditing the books NOW. Just how much damage has been done that they aren't telling us?

I'm a fiscal conservative at heart and hope and pray that we don't have to go into a deeper deficit to climb our way out of the hole the Republicans put us into. But if we must, FDR left a blueprint that points in the right direction.

Developing alternative fuels, rebuilding our infrastructure, encouraging our young to seek higher education, and straightening our medical care delivery system have to be top priorities...right behind voting reform.

This will rebuild our markets and revenues, create jobs and equity on our own shores again, and allow us to strengthen our military...which has to be the biggest blunder these morons made.

I firmly pray that Americans never again allow a President to send our troops into battle without the best equipment and generals to lead them. One does not go to war with what you have...or dismiss those officers who protest such an idiotic move.

The economy took its' biggest downturn 2 years ago, when the Democrats took over Congress then went on record to say that there was nothing wrong with FNMA and the securitization of the mortgages. Thanks to them, the mortgage industry went down, I lost an $80K a year job because of the downsizing in our industry, and now make $30K a year doing pest control... Now, Obama will RAISE taxes to pay for the unemployment and the government programs he wants to use to "spread the wealth" around, and unfortunately, it'll be folks like me, making below middle income and supporting a family of 4, who will be hurt the most by the bad decisions of the liberals in this country...

Why do we treat these Lifers of the Bench like saints? They can be as corrupt as any politician if given enough encouragement. The Founders gave us a remedy to handle such situations. We should use it when it becomes necessary.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't vote for McCain either - I wrote in a candidate. I think this country is ready for a change, and I wish that I believed we were going to face better times with Obama at the helm. I will be praying everyday for him and our congress - God knows they need all the help they can get - because he is our president and they are suppose to represent the people. It is a shame that so many sell themselves to lobbyists and special causes for political gain at the expense of the people they were elected to serve. I am a 62 year old female who has worked in the defense industry, supporting our armed forces in peace and conflict for 35 years, and I believe our form of government is the best in the world. It's not little known along the Rocky Mountains, and its not just in California and Nevada.
Geothermal's been discussed in the whole region as a possible energy source.
There are hot springs all along the Rocky Mountain chain, and can be used for various things from heating buildings, and growing tomatoes, and as a tourist attraction (Yellowstone Park) to tapping it for a source of electrical energy.
There was even one outfit that was talking about using some of our deeper underground mines in Butte as a starting point for drilling into some of the deeper, hotter geothermal layers.
Personally I like to go to swimming outside in the hot springs on New Year's day. ;-D

I am also struck by the role that Gov. Dean's 2004 campaign played in Obama's campaign strategy and tactics. I wrote a post on my blog at lifeonq.com about my experience as a Deaniac during the '04 campaign and how I think Dean for America, now Democracy for America, helped set the stage for Barack Obama's victory. I believe Howard Dean's campaign strategy in 2004, followed by his leadership of the DNC, deserve a lot of credit for the Democratic Party's success yesterday. I see hope. I see positive change. Perhaps Obama says an "um" on occasion, like many of us do. However, at least, unlike Palin, he doesn't "give a shout out" or use other contemporary slang when speaking to the American people. He also recognizes that most of us don't need a six-pack under our arms when we come home from work at night: sounds like Joe Six-Pack needs a little AA.

After eight years of hearing a president sound "down home" and clueless, it will be great to hear an intelligent president who can speak well and who won't make be cringe with embarrassment.

NEWSWEEK has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family--clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. According to two knowledgeable sources, a vast majority of the clothes were bought by a wealthy donor, who was shocked when he got the bill. Palin also used low-level staffers to buy some of the clothes on their credit cards. The McCain campaign found out last week when the aides sought reimbursement. One aide estimated that she spent "tens of thousands" more than the reported $150,000, and that $20,000 to $40,000 went to buy clothes for her husband. Some articles of clothing have apparently been lost. An angry aide characterized the shopping spree as "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," and said the truth will eventually come out when the Republican Party audits its books.

After all, they did not have little things like electricity, automobiles, the internet; heck, they didn't even have indoor plumbing. The framers were not plagued by immoral heads of corporations who, having run their companies into the ground, absconded (albeit legally) with millions! President Elect Obama did in fact say that the Constitution was flawed; however, he was referring to the legality of slavery, not allowing women to vote and 'valueing negroes' as 3/5 of human. All of which have been LEGALLY changed (basically admitting that they were wrong to start with!) with ammendments enacted by Congress and signed into law by Presidents. If you disagree with these changes - if you are a racist who thinks that slavery should still be legal and women should be esentially chatel - then please, by all means, LEAVE!!!!!!!!!

And now a big percentage of these elders need help, from there siblings. Just stop and think about it for one minute, if the elders had kept there money and not give it overwhelmingly to there siblings, they would not be hurting today, its time for there siblings to help them, so they don't have to sit around and look at four wall's.

This is not what the Us. is about, they should be able to enjoy life, in what few good years they have left. And most of them could of, if they had not give it all to there siblings.

And Sandy as far as you not being able to ever retire, who's fault would that be?

MaryMac, my only regret is that I live in a Blue state that was going for Obama anyways.

I am particularly proud that CT finally kicked out our LAST Republican House Rep, Chris Shays. We are totally blue now. Feels good.

I am also proud, that we had an amendment forced onto the ballot to try and get rid of Gay Marriage just passed here. Disguised as "Do you want to have a Constitutional Convention so that CT residents can make changes to our Constitution". VOTED AGAINST OVERWHELMINGLY!

This is a nice state to live in. Civilized, intelligent, tolerant people!

I liked the fact that sarah palin wasted all that republican donation money.

if republicans keep donating money and it keeps on getting wasted they will go bankrupt

plus if sarah palin tries to run for president, you don't have to have a phd in financing to know she doesn't have enough money to compete on a national level.

if sarah palin runs in 2012 that will all but guarantee Omama will be president for 8 years.

More from Newsweek:

McCain himself rarely spoke to Palin during the campaign, and aides kept him in the dark about the details of her spending on clothes because they were sure he would be offended. Palin asked to speak along with McCain at his Arizona concession speech Tuesday night, but campaign strategist Steve Schmidt vetoed the request.

GOP Civil War Begins

But if there's a real crisis in the House right now for the Republican Party, it's the gradually diminishing voice of moderation. Virginia's Tom Davis famously criticized his cohorts earlier this year, saying that "the Republican brand is in the trash can...if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf." This morning, Davis can take comfort in the fact that he read the political landscape correctly. Unfortunately for the GOP, he'll also be retiring -- one more non-shrill voice who won't be participating in the process. This morning, Davis took a shot at the Club For Growth, an anti-tax zealotry outfit who've taken great pains to increase the fringe faction in the GOP side: "We call it the Club for Democratic Growth," Davis told WAMU Public Radio today.

Not looking good for the republicans.

Not all of us have pursued careers which pay well or are recession-proof. Nor have we been blessed not to have faced major medical emergencies that drained our savings.

Sandy i don't want to argue with you, i respect you. However that is a lame excuse, i don't care if you work for minimum wage, the idea is to live well within you means in your working years, and pay your self first, by saving for retirement.

Sure i understand that 1 illness can wipe anyone out these days. But really that is not the case in most cases, most people just blow it by living above there means, living like dime store millionaires. Which is the reason that we are in a crisis at the present time.

Here is a good example of what i'm talking about, most youngsters these days want to start off in there 20s that took there parents all of there lives to achieve, this has to stop. Here's a example of what i'm talking about CELL PLONES we did not have the luxury, and can barely afford it at our age. But 12 year olds think that they are entilted to one. We'll say its only 50.00 per month times 12 that is 600.00 per year. Times 60 years, that is 60,000 thousand dollars, and that is just one little example. This is why working people don't have squat. How much would that 60,000 be worth in 50 years invested, at say only 7 percent interest, for retirement. That don't even consider texting or any other bells and whistles. Just this one little thing over a 50 year period, is the difference being able to retire or not. And there is many other little things, that mean just as much. Its not the big things, like houses, and cars that break people, its the little things, that i described above.

Sandy i respect the dignity thing, but you can have both, dignity, and comfort, in your old years.

Can Sarah Palin go home again?

In the 68 days since Alaska's governor began her run for vice president, things have changed on the home front. Some of her former allies are fuming, and former enemies are lying in wait. Public perceptions of the governor have also changed. Has the governor changed as well?

Questions about Palin's future began to circulate at Alaska's Election Central on Tuesday night almost as soon as the national election results came in.

Palin is expected to arrive in Alaska sometime today in a campaign plane. Will she be the old Palin, a populist who worked with Democrats to achieve victories in the Legislature, or the sharp partisan from the national campaign?

At an Alaska Obama gathering Tuesday night, some celebrants said they were disappointed by the new Palin they saw in the campaign.

"All the alliances she used to get things done have been shattered," said Kate Troll, executive director of the Alaska Conservation Alliance. "She comes back to unknown territory."

.................

Things aren't boding well for sarah palin.

Sandy i hate to keep harping, but here is another example. Let say that you have a grandson, or a granddaughter. And let say that you can give them a paper route, that pays 2,500 per year. And you can tax exempt the 2,500. For say a 8 year old, and put that money into a IRA which is tax except. And never ever, put one more dime into it. At the time that child is 65, it will be worth One and one half million dollars, based on a 8 percent return. Now let me ask you this question which one is worth the most 3 and one half years of a cell phone, or the one time investment of 2,500 dollars? Its a non starter!

149
chassie on November 5, 2008 at 05:55 PM

Chassie: I like and respect you so much but I deal with people every day and Yes, there are a certain percentage of people who have lived 'beyond their means' and that percentage has contributed to the economic meltdown; but, not as large a percentage as you might think.
Since WWII, the conventional wisdom has held that you invest in a house that you can barely afford now and will be comfortable affording in 5 years. This has held 'true' because the economy, even with some downturns, has always grown, until the last 8 years.
The current economy has suffered 'stagflation' for 8 straight years. That is when wages do not grow - at all - not even 'cost of living' increases but prices grow at more than the normal rate of inflation. Not since the great depression have we suffered 'stagflation' for more than 3 years in a row.

According to economists, the average family now has $2,000 less per year than they did 8 years ago. The middle class economy has deteriorated for 8 straight years! People have been dipping into their savings and, when that runs out, putting "Luxury" items like rising utilities, groceries, and gas on 16% to 30% interest credit cards and "robbing Peter to pay Paul" just to make the minimum payments for the last five or so years, just trying to make ends meet and when confronted by a medical emergency, there is just nothing left. With the new laws, bankruptcy is not an option.
Traditionally the biggest savings investment people make in their lifetimes is in their homes; however, due to 'creative financing,' job losses, and stagflation, people are now 'under water' in that they owe more than their homes appraise for.
Trickle down economics and the Republican Tax policies have lined the pockets of the richest 1% to 2% while literally puting the 'weight of the world' on the backs of the American Middle Class! Please believe me that SandyH is not alone in her plight, this is primarily a 'product' of Republican Rule and not simply the American Middle Class 'living beyond it's means.'

I really don't think we are really in that much of a disagreement.

Everyone will have to sacrifice in this economic downturn. It's far from getting better anytime soon. But if we have raised our children well, they will not abandon us in our old age. They will make the necessary changes in their lives to make their parents comfortable.

I firmly believe that it is the responsibility of one generation not to leave the next one without any hope. By electing Barack Obama we have taken the first step in correcting a situation which my generation let get out of control.

I respect your views and insights. We will just have to agree to disagree sometimes...if we really are disagreeing.

If you don' think I'm right then that is your interpretation, but just look at the one's that makes say 250,00 to 500,00 per year, they got the same problems that poor people have, because they are living above there means. chassie,

It was George W. Bush who told these kids (and all the rest of us) after 9/11 to go out and shop.

It was his complete disregard for the principles that you stated and his corrupt policies that lead to so many people living on credit, making risky investments, and assuming that life can only get easier if you put off taking responsibility for your actions.

I don't think there has ever been a world leader who has deliberately done this to his own people. Sure, people should have had more common sense and smelled a rat. But remember the Republicans have conditioned Americans for nearly 40 years now to think they were family values, morally superior beings.

Who could have thought they were swindlers? These were supposedly reputable, honest men. Bush certainly didn't fool you and me, but he and his Republican Congress scammed millions of others. It's the greatest heist of personal fortunes in history. The slight of hand was masterful.

When a nation can't trust the people who they've entrusted their future, it's time to get rid of them. We got rid of some of them yesterday. But the rest of them are still there and plotting their next move to fool the sheeple again.

We have to help the younger generation now or the Republicans will try again to destroy this nation for their own personal gain and glory.

So what do you have against cell phones? They can be expensive if you don't shop around for the right plan. But the the newer ones are a great way to communicate and share information. You can catch a Republican saying something stupid and put it up on U-Tube in minutes.

I agree that people need to live within their means; however, when just regular living expenses increase at 20 to 30% and wages go down instead of up - it's extremely difficult to do so much less save for the future. Before I married my current husband, I had a house, he had a condo and then after we married he inherited a home from a grandparent. All are paid for - thankfully - but we are trying to sell two of the three (we don't care which two) and the market is so depressed that we are renting two of them for the property taxes, insurance and upkeep monies. We are just barely breaking even. I saved 10% per month religiously - all my life and in the last five years, I haven't been able to save even 1% per month. Almost everyone I know is in the same boat. While I realize that some have done as you said - lived beyond their means - at least an equal number are victims of the Republican economic policies.

Chassie: The Republican Economic policies are one of the many, many reasons that I was so determined to elect a Democratic President. I'm very angry with my fellow Tennesseans and feel that they voted against their own best interests when they voted for J. McCain. I read alot about economics and the economy of the USA has suffered under every Republican President since Nixon. Not one of them has been a 'good steward of the economy' and I am so very happy that we elected President elect Obama and that he will be working with majorities in both houses of Congress. When the economy grows for the middle class under the administration of Pres. Obama, the way that it did under Pres. Clinton, you will see a vast difference from the last 8 years.

You have made some excellent points. The markets and economy are completely out of control. Those with the least amount of education or financial means are going to be hit the hardest.

I guess I'm like an evangelical Christian when it comes to this. We have to watch out for those with the least among us. We have to empower the young to make the necessary changes we oldsters neglected to make.

But I also agree with chassie that there comes a time when you have to kick them out of the nest and ask them to be responsible for their actions.

What a state Alaska is ! Ted Young, Stevens, and Palin ! Three Republicans for the Wall of Shame! You betcha !

Will the Re-Election of Convicted Felon Ted Stevens Lead to Sen. Sarah Palin?

by Meg White

Yesterday's election was historic in many ways. The shock and joy here in Chicago over our own Sen. Barack Obama becoming the first black president in the history of the United States was tangible in the streets. But there were local races that made history right alongside Obama. For example, Anita Alvarez hit a double-whammy in Chicagoland as the very first Hispanic and first woman to be elected Cook County State's Attorney. Little ripples of historic change just like Alvarez's followed the Obama win all over the country.

Much of this allows for a huge grin and a sigh of, "Only in America." But there is a dark side to history-making as well, and it rears its head this morning in Alaska. That state is likely to be the first to return a convicted felon to the U.S. Senate.

Though Sen. Ted Stevens hasn't yet been confirmed as the winner of the Alaska Senate race, as of today, CNN has Stevens up over Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by more than 3,000 votes with 99 percent of precincts reporting.

Chassie: I love you too! You are a great, great Democrat and We agree in principle. I have either given (as wedding present in lieu of big wedding) or loaned all 3 of my oldest children enough money to put down at least 15% on the purchase of their first home. I would have preferred that they wait until they could put down 20 to 25% but with rents in this area being higher than payments on 30 yr. traditional fixed home loans, what was the point? Seriously, my 26 yr. old, was able to, with 15% down, get a home for $80 less per month than a decent (not top of the line - just decent) two bedroom apartment. So why not buy instead of rent? She's 'underwater' due to the market but she is okay for the moment and hopefully will stay so until the housing market rebounds - which it - of course - will.
I'm not trying to make excuses, I'm just trying to make the point that the Republican economic and tax policies have put an unfair amount of the financial burden for the country upon the shoulders of the middle class and that the negative growth in 'our' sector of the economy is now reflected in the wall street markets and other areas of the economy. Yes, the richest 1 to 2% are paying 38% of the taxes but they are enjoying over 65% of the wealth. Pres. Elect Obama understands and intends to change the tax policies to ensure that we, the middle class, are provided a fair tax rate, one that reflects our portion of the income and until we rid ourselves of these unfair republican policies, we will not have middle class growth and the economy of the world will suffer as a result.

Good evening, everyone. About a week ago, the carpenter was in the drive-way working on his truck, when one of the locals pulled up and told him that he always knows who are the best candidates to vote for by the signs in my yard and he told the carpenter to thank me for it.

Tonight I came home and found Obama/Biden and Zack Space signs lining my driveway! What a sight! I have a feeling it was a "gift" from the local that paid a visit last week.

With his history-making election behind him, President-elect Barack Obama was moving ahead with his transition on Wednesday as he prepared to confront the daunting challenges that he will have to face as president in just 76 days, amid two wars and the gravest economic crisis to afflict the country since the Great Depression.

The monster years
Last night wasn’t just a victory for tolerance; it wasn’t just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.

What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America’s political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution. Monsters like Karl Rove, who declared that liberals wanted to offer “therapy and understanding” to terrorists. Monsters like Dick Cheney, who saw 9/11 as an opportunity to start torturing people.

And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was “shrill.”

Four years ago it seemed as if the monsters would dominate American politics for a long time to come. But for now, at least, they’ve been banished to the wilderness.

Based on the current numbers and the fact that white liberals are lying to the polsters, Mcain will defeat Hussein by 56% - 44%.

Take it to the bank.
Sally-* on November 2, 2008 at 06:44 AM

OK Veneita, but remember that Hussein must have a 10 point lead in the polls in order to win on accounta the Bradley effect and turnout and other factors.

This is likely to be a year of big Republican turnout, not because of McCain, but because of Sarah, queer marriage amendments in CA and elsewhere, Hussein's racist and terrorist background, Hussein's communist/socialist beliefs, Supreme Court Justices and Hussein's associations.

In this time of war, I cannot imagine the American people turning to a pussy like Hussein Obama. You will probably pick up some Senate and House seats though. And with McCain in the White House you are likely to get some dopey shit passed.
Sally-* on November 2, 2008 at 04:27 AM

And there is no viable, electable Democrat candidate - Hillary will fold like Larry's lawn chair when the Republicans remind us of all the sleaze she has been involved in. Good evening, all.

Just passing through to share an interesting artcle.

I'd find this hilarious if it wasn't so ironic. AhmadiNutjob's interior minister gets caught lying and the Iranian Parliament kicks him out.

While Bush and his entire cabinet lied and/or committed perjury and other felonies and the Republicans still want us to believe they are regular guys? We should offer them thanks and give them all a gold watch as they leave in Januray?

Minister’s Dismissal Is Setback for Iranian Leader

By NAZILA FATHI
Published: November 4, 2008

TEHRAN — The Iranian Parliament voted Tuesday to dismiss a top government minister, another setback for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad eight months before he faces a presidential election.

Parliament dismissed the interior minister, Ali Kordan, on charges of dishonesty and lying about a fake honorary doctorate he said he had received from Oxford. Of the 247 members present, 188 voted to fire Mr. Kordan, while only 45 voted against dismissal. Fourteen members abstained.

Analysts said the vote underlined the assertiveness of Parliament amid a growing economic crisis. Inflation is running at 30 percent, and falling oil prices — Iran has the third largest known oil reserves in the world — are undermining the government’s budget. The impeachment suggested that Mr. Ahmadinejad could be losing many political allies before the presidential vote next June.

Parliament had urged the president to dismiss Mr. Kordan after he refused to resign. But Mr. Ahmadinejad called the dismissal “illegal” and said Mr. Kordan’s forged degree was nothing more than “a piece of torn paper,” hardly worthy of a scandal. He also refused to appear in Parliament to defend his minister, though many of the lawmakers who voted for Mr. Kordan’s dismissal were among Mr. Ahmadinejad’s political allies.

In his defense, Mr. Kordan said that his 30 years of service to Iran was worth more than a degree...

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/world/middleeast/05iran.html?th&emc=th

The similarities between Bush and NutJob are startling. For instance, Bush has been quoted as saying the Constitution is "just a piece of paper"...which he proceeded to tear up.

Bush considers any attempts by Congress to obtain White House documents or even question key officials as "illegal" because of Executive Privilege.

Just think of all those years of "distinguished" service that Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Greenspan, and Paulson gave us...certainly worth more than any degree? Their performance has been priceless?

Considering this country is in a similar economic crisis, perhaps it's time Congress got more "assertive" when it comes to questioning All The President's Men?

Now that the election is over, it's time to haul their asses back into Congressional hearings to explain how they screwed up and what the Obama administration should not repeat. Since we could never get them to deliver adequate service, we should at least be given the privilege of knowing how they arrived at such a grand scale of incompetence.

Why should the taxpayers have to pay to get the details when they all write books after they leave office?

Paulson has had $700,000 billion for more than six weeks now and the banks still aren't lending money. What happened to the promised liquidity? What are Paulson's whiz kid friends from the financial banks doing with the bailout money?

Who is minding the store till Obama takes over?
The Lame Duck and his cast of Quakers owe us an explanation...now.

Well, let's see what the "Real Americans" thought of that two bit nitwit and her Grampy.

Obama/Biden 58.75%
McCain/Palin 40.44%

More on foreign comments on our new President. what a breath of fresh air after this stinking republican stranglehold we have had for over 15 years.

"Russian politicians are being cautiously optimistic about Barack Obama’s triumphant victory at the election.

Russia’s major media outlets and prominent politicians said prior to the voting in the United States that building relations with Russia would become one of the serious tests for the new American president. Spokespeople for Obama’s headquarters stated after the victory of their candidate that Obama would obviously defend USA’s interests although he would be able to find a pragmatic base for cooperation with Russia."

Dems Gain in Oregon Senate Race, Three Other Races Unresolved
By Rachel Kapochunas and Marie Horrigan, CQ Staff
By the end of election night, it was clear that the Democratic Party had gained at least five seats in the Senate.

And, 24 hours later, the Democrats appeared to have increased their take to a full half-dozen, as Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley pulled ahead of two-term Republican Sen. Gordon Smith with most of the yet-to-be counted votes in strongly Democratic-voting areas. The Oregonian newspaper in Portland projected a victory for Merkley, the Speaker of the Oregon House, and CQ Politics’ independent analysis of the outstanding votes concurs with that conclusion

The rats are regrouping...

Bill Berkowitz: Heritage Foundation gears up to 'fight back against resurgent left'

The Washington, D.C.-based think tank, which celebrated its 35th anniversary earlier this year, sensed an Obama victory and got a head start on trolling for money....

Support Heritage's work to defend conservative ideas after the election.

Heritage is doing the important work to fight for and defend conservative ideas against the toughest of obstacles. Our record tells the story: we helped shape President Reagan's agenda, helped beat back Bill Clinton's big-government health care plan, successfully fought for welfare reform and the Bush tax cuts, and helped lay the groundwork for missile defense.

We have a concrete plan to defend and advance our cause. As part of our Leadership for America campaign, we have developed a plan to work for real change in ten key areas, reforms that will help keep America a remarkable nation...

Fuellner is undoubtedly correct when he writes: "In Washington, there are no permanent victories and no permanent defeats. We must remain firmly committed to our principles in both good times and in bad. That's why your help is so important."
Liberals and progressives should understand and adopt this credo as well.

CNN) -- Two men accused of plotting to kill Barack Obama and other African-Americans have been indicted on charges including making threats against a presidential candidate, federal officials said Wednesday.

A federal grand jury in Tennessee indicted Daniel Cowart, 20, and Paul Schlesselman, 18, on the threat charges and with illegal possession of a sawed-off shotgun and conspiracy to rob a federally licensed gun dealer.

According to court documents, Cowart and Schlesselman -- who authorities said are self-described white supremacists -- planned to kill more than 100 African-Americans, including 14 who would be beheaded.

Marriage has traditionally been between a man and a woman since the founding of the United States. To change something that embedded in the history of America should be put to a fair vote of the electorate as was civil rights. The results of CA Proposition 8 should send a clear message to the GLBT community that even in the most liberal of states; more than half of the electorate do not share your view in this matter. That is a democracy. That is the very foundation our great nation is built upon.

The GLBT community should reconsider their strategy at this time and come to the realization that, for at least another generation, Civil Unions will have to be an alternative. Polling indicates that state electorates, such as in CA, will have a lot easier time supporting Civil Unions than they will gay marriage.

Is this fair? No. Is it the old axiom of "separate but equal"? Yes, it is. But the civil rights contingent had to go through this period and it would appear that a majority of the electorate would want the same for the GLBT community if for no other reason than to give society, as a whole, time to adjust.

I'm confident that in one generation, or less, homosexuality will be considered as little as someone who is left-handed as many do now. I, like the GLBT community, look forward to that day. Every tax paying American citizen should be allowed to enjoy the benefits of a legally recognized marriage.

But while 52%+ of the electorate are prepared to accept an African-American as POTUS, the CA results clearly indicate that gay marriage is not that widely accepted. That is a true shame but, as in the POTUS election of two nights ago, the people have spoken. And the Democratic Party should not squander and of its mandate to force this through the Congress. To do so would violate the trust of a majority of the electorate. At best, this is a late second term item for the agenda and we need to see one state, any state, have a majority of its electorate approve gay marriage as opposed to judicial ruling(s). Pursue Civil Unions. That is your best chance, IMHO, for the foreseeable future.

250
BobVADemocratHawk on November 6, 2008 at 01:36 PM

OK Bob- Can I vote on whether you can enter into a legal contract?

48% of the people in CA thought that marraige rights should not be taken away from GLBT's. Unlike you, I think that is a whole lot of acceptance. However, when do we as a people vote to take rights away?

251
Cate on November 6, 2008 at 01:44 PM

Why am I not equal to you Bob?

Because 52% of the population in CA thinks I am not?

2 churches spent millions of dollars to lie to the people of CA about what this law would mean, perhaps we should be discussing their tax exempt status instead of your justification for making me lesss equal than you.

252
Cate on November 6, 2008 at 01:49 PM

Cate on November 6, 2008 at 01:44 PM

CA is arguably the most liberal state of the union. And for gay marriage only to garner 48% of the vote speaks volumes as to the rest of the electorate.

There has not been a single state that has passed gay marriage legislation as no state has yet not to approve gay marriage bans. The only states to have approved gay marriage have done it from the judicial bench. The sentiment of the majority of the electorate is quite clear. And until that sentiment changes, IMHO, civil unions are the only logical alternative.

In regards to your question about whether or not you can vote to see if I can enter into a legal contract, get a majority of the electorate to agree with you and we'll talk about it.

253
BobVADemocratHawk on November 6, 2008 at 01:54 PM

Cate on November 6, 2008 at 01:49 PM

Why am I not equal to you Bob?

Because 52% of the population in CA thinks I am not?

You're preaching to the choir here, Cate. If I could wave a magic wand and make gay marriage legal across the nation, I would. But to answer your questions, you are equal to me. It is your definition of marriage that is in question. And 52% of CA voters, and upwards of 70% of nationwide voters, disagree with your definition of marriage. And until the GLBT community can find a way to assuage those misigivings amongst a majority of the electorate, that's the way it is.

Pursue civil unions. That is your best chance, for now. The question is often asked by the GLBT community, "What it is about my gay marriage that threatens your straight marriage?" I don't know the answer to that because I agree with the GLBT community to a point. But in this political environment I have to ask the GLBT community, "How does calling your gay marriage a civil union for the sake of getting it passed as legislation diminish or threaten the quality of your marriage if said union has the same legal benefits of marriage?"

Are Civil Unions equal to marriage?

Not according to a report issued in February, 2008 by a New Jersey state commission tasked to evaluate their state's Civil Unions law, implemented by the legislature under orders from their highest court to stop discriminating against people of the same gender who want to marry. Approved unanimously by all twelve members, the report is rather damning:

A commission established to study same-sex civil unions in New Jersey has found in its first report that civil unions create a "second-class status" for gay couples rather than giving them equality.

Lovely: second-class status for human beings.

So, with the exception of calling a union between two people, gay, straight, black or white, short or tall, a marriage, are your rights under a civil union, the same as those under a civil marriage??

Lets all give our future president support in helping him accomplish his job and fulfill his promises. It's going to be a hard road, but not impossible.
While he is focus on his job, let's all -those of us who volunteered and worked during the campaign - not stop working. Let continue in building and maintaining our democratic networking to bring together those who are left behind. Let continue the work we started and keep going... Let's keep this country safe from mediocrity in the office. Let's work hard to always and forever elect people who have so much to offer to the Nation. Let's higher standards and expectations for both parties. Why do Democrates have to produce outstanding brains that are put to the test -all the time. Republicans... it's enough for them to speak in a complete sentence... it's ashame. Let's promis ouselves not to fall this low and this short with regard to people who are and will govern the country. As a nation -a powerful one- Let have requirements that we do not negotiate when its comes to choosing a leader. We all have so much to loose, we already lost so much...

Which is precisely where I am going with this. Gay rights to "marry" is never going to be decided or resolved by the "mob". It is a judicial matter.

If civil unions do not enjoy the same rights and privileges that a union called a "marriage" does, then there is an issue.

Call me crazy, but that is where the debate begins and ends.

263
Michigan_Dave on November 6, 2008 at 02:16 PM

OK, before this gets all out of hand, the "Fairness Doctrine" is NOT the same thing as the "Equal Time LAW".

The F/D was an agreement as part of the licensing process to use the PUBLIC airwaves to basically print money having to do with airing all sides of a controversial issue. It had nothing to do with equality of time. Its thrust was Fairness and Balance (and to think FOX stole that for their tag line).

The ETL only covered political campaigns, where if a candidate was interviewed by a station his opponent had a right to respond in kind. That is still a LAW on the books.

The Fairness Doctrine ONLY applies to broadcast programs. Anybody who gets cable is tacitly approving the hate talk by paying the monthly bill.

See? The F/D is nothing more than a handshake and a nod & a wink. The ETR is a LAW.

COEUR d'ALENE -- A classic science fiction novel could be the first casualty of the Coeur d'Alene School District's efforts to assure all books on required reading lists have been approved by the school board before teachers use them in district classrooms.

Trustees could not agree whether to accept a book review committee's recommendation to add Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" to the list of approved reading materials at their meeting Monday.

With four out of five board members present, the vote was split 2-2 resulting in a decision to consider the book again at the December board meeting when they anticipate full attendance.

Dave- For instance, in New Jersey

"Judy Ford of Port Norris formed a civil union last April to add her partner to her health insurance plan. But the medical center that employs Ford used a loophole in federal law to deny coverage to her partner, Yvonne Mazzola.

Now, because of her civil union, she would be liable for her partner's uninsured medical bills. They might dissolve their civil union."

Further, if you look at Civil Unions, you discover that people don't understand them or afford the same level of respect towards a partner.

It becomes up to the nurse or doctor if you can visit your civil union partner. A wife or husband does not need to deal with such BS.

Marriage is a great divisive issue because it involves ignorance and religion and law, and many cultural traditions trying to coexist in a gigantic nation. And it is a vast grey area of cultures and religions clashing with the state for rights.

Confusion and emotion rule the issue. Some people are suffering somewhat by it and some are feeling left out, and it needs to be sorted out with fairness and justice.

But, meanwhile, people are dying by the thousands every day around the world from preventable diseases and starvation and aggressive violence. US businesses and military and munitions are involved in some of this insanity, and, IMO, this should be the focus of all our efforts to regain peace and security here and abroad.

Bankruptcy and a police state will quickly engulf us otherwise, I think. And hopping into all our marriage beds will be Big Brother or some devilish fiends, with little or no respect for privacy or human dignity.

I know for the most part that it is a "state by state" issue and that some state's do not distinguish between the rights in a civil union and those in a "marriage".

IMHO...the rights of a civil union should be equal and the same as those of a "marriage". And I don't think you would find any disagreement here on that.

Despite many people believing that CA is a liberal state, it can be just as backward as any other when you factor in SoCal which is heavily republican.

And, the whole civil union thing is someone's idea of throwing the dog a bone to keep the GLBT community happy. If the state is issuing a license to join two unrelated adults in marriage, they must issue that license upon request and have no other say in the matter.

I would go so far as saying that these laws not only violate equal protection but also privacy as well.

Maybe we can use the vote totals as proof that more Americans want the Pugs to move out of this Country. They can find another one. We did take a vote on it.

Here is a LTE to the Chicago Sun-Times printed today:

With the election of a Marxist as president of the United States, I am sad to say that for the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really ashamed of my country.

Gregg Dudash, Palos Hills

I sent a reply which I'm sure will never be printed. It basically said the I figured out two ways to alleviate his displeasure.

O'Hare Int'l and Midway Int'l.

As a matter of law, any constitutional amendment can be overturned as indicated by the 18th and 21st amendments. If 3/4 of the states voted to abolish the First Amendment, it could be done.

But in CA, the vote was to amend the CA constitution. And what the voters of CA decided was that gay marriage, in its current form, was unacceptable to the majority. We are a nation of law, not men. The people have overridden the judiciary in response to the judiciary's previous ruling by amending their constitution in accordance with CA law. Checks and balances...

And as a matter of debate, we'll continue to throw GWB under the proverbial bus as y'all do President Carter. The big difference is we didn't re-elect President Carter. Y'all re-elected President Bush. What the hell were y'all thinking?

Wall Street always has been and always will be based on speculation and risk. It's not just business, it's everyone who ever had a 401-k or investment fund that leaving and getting out of the market.

The days are returning when buying a companies stock is based on their inherent value and the long term viability of their particular business with small returns on investment.

Over the last decade, investors were looking for maximum returns with little thought of the risk. the higher the risk, the better the return. Many of them got greedy and with the deregulation of the market and little if any oversight and disaster was bound to happen.

And what do you know....it did.

So it is sad to see people get burned and lose (and it a lot of instances, it was never there) money. Many lost their entire 401-K savings. Ironically, they call it savings but many played with it like it was monopoly money.

It doesn't matter what party is in control at this point. It's all about seeking and finding the inherent value in the companies that still exist.

Savings will be the norm from here on out. And that is a good thing. Ask the Japanese :)

Ok Dave, for the record there are about 1400 rights and responsibilities that go along with marriage. These rights and responsibilities are not found under one heading. Marriage has actually evolved over the years.

There is not one type of civil union. Civil unions are a recently made up device. Thus far it hasn't worked because separate is not equal and it doesn't work. If they were to obolish the current system and left the word "marriage" for the chuches and civil unions for the contractual aspect for ALL people it would be fine. As I understands it that is how it is set up in some European countries.

Opponents of gay marriage really don't like the idea of civil unions, but it does work to keep some of them quiet. It is harder to pretend that magically civil unions will destroy their marriages. And harder to pretend that churches will be forced to perform gay marriage. (They wouldn't- they couldn't be.) Essentially that is the only advantage of going civil union.

And that could've been a difference in the CA vote. When the dust settles and the smoke clears, it still comes down to politics. You have to be able to convince a majority of your position. The only majority's gay marriage have gained thus far are judicial majorities and those are few and far between. We'll get there one day, but not today.

Afternoon all good Dems! I hope that you are all doing well. I see that the subject of marriage is being discussed. I am a Christian in the buckle of the Bible belt and I still don't understand why any marriage between any two people is in conflict with laws. Why are there laws banning any two people from making a declaration and sharing their lives? Who are they hurting by doing so? What possible difference could it make? I just plain do not get the opposition and why it is anyone's business if two adults make the choice to share their lives. Who are they hurting and why is it against the law. This whole issue reminds me of the law that we had when I was a child about inter-racial marriage.
I must say, I am happily married and if someone were to come along and tell me that my marriage was suddenly 'illegal' and somehow 'invalid,' I think I'd be raising some serious he&&!

The law below "DOMA" passed in 1996 is where you have to start. You probably already know that. Having said that, we now have a constitutional law expert as a president elect. And our best shot at a liberal supreme court in decades.

So, in my mind and knowing that the battle against a christian majority that believe marriage was divinely ordained from someone capable of hearing Gods voice, will be near impossible..I would recommend that any effort and energy be expended and directed to the courts.

As Bob noted, along with others, we are a nation of laws and every once in a while, one is passed that is pretty effin' stupid. DOMA would be a prime example.

Critics of DOMA argue that the law is unconstitutional on several grounds:

Congress over-reached its authority under the Full Faith and Credit Clause.
The law illegally discriminates and violates the Equal Protection Clause.
The law violates the fundamental right to marriage (including same-sex marriage) under the due process clause.
Several challenges to the law's constitutionality have been appealed to the United States Supreme Court since its enactment, but so far the Court has declined to review any such cases.

Michigan_Dave on November 6, 2008 at 03:42 PM

Well Bob, I wish you had that magic wand. However, I disagree with the premise that my rights should hinge on a popular vote.
Cate: I agree totally - if Roe v. Wade had done so, we would never have won at that point in time. Now, I can't imagine that there would ever be a popular vote against it. A few evangelicals and hard core catholics mixed with the odd right wing nut job or two (yes, Sally and Dumb A$$ - this means you!), would vote against, but the majority of the popular vote would be overwhelmingly for the Roe decision to stand.

286
marymac_memphis on November 6, 2008 at 03:47 PM

Sorry I wasn't clear Greg- They actually do both. It is just a separate ceremony for each part.

Bob- Actually several years ago a similar thing passed in CA with a majority of 60% of the voters being opposed to gay marriage. Inroads have been made.

From what I have read "No on 8" made some errors in their targeted voters. Further "No on 8" had been winning and was way ahead in the polls until the churches started their misinformation campaign.

And that is perhaps the most frustrating part. Why do churches lie? Why do they pretend they will be forced to perform marriage? That schools will have to teach it? That they will not be able to object to it?

Seriously though, don't you know that he is just spinning in his grave with some of the decisions that have been handed down recently!

His opinions were - much like Stevens' - based in linear thought and logic. Stevens at 88 is still the clearest 'thinker' on the Court. Sure, I guess we could abolish all rights afforded us in that document, but until the conservatives do that, they are still everyone's rights.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm just hoping that we can now put some jurists on the courts who will leave their own personal biases and political views at home and read the effing Constitution for a change.

And when that happens, I will sit back and watch as the backward people of both Idaho and CA and other states, who flipped a finger at the founding fathers and the agreement that we all live under, have their backsides turned red with a true Constitutional paddling.

Thanks for posting. I forgot from where that quote came.

Let's face it, Obama will probably replace most of the progressives on the court, but we still need at least one of the conservatives to kick the bucket to make sure gays are allowed the same rights as anyone else.

Which of the Far Right judges do you think might expire first? Roberts has seizures. Does Thomas have heart problem? Scalia could die of arrogance? Alito might die of ignorance? Could any of them go before January 20? Bush would probably appoint a new one with a presidential signing statement.

The only way I can see out of this injustice is to pass the ERA. We have a Democratic Congress so there would be no problem there. Can we pick up where we left off with the ERA? Would we have to go back and get 3/4 of the states or would two do?

I don't understand why specific groups are being targeted as legally inferior over others. Why would any Constitutional government take away rights that everybody supposedly already has under its charter?

These conservative wingnut Justices would probably to back and revisit the slave provisions in the Constitution if Scalia had one more Far Right judge to back him up. I hate how he's always insisting that the United States is a republic not a democracy so it's alright to debate discrimination as a principle.

It's really hard to read any of the letters and arugments by the Framers of the Constitution and think that they didn't have a democracy in mind when they wrote the document.

It's as if some of these Justices as interrupting the Constitution as they do the Bible... as gospel truth. None of the men who wrote the Constitution were religious prophets. Franklin and Jefferson were hardly saints. Most of them weren't even lawyers...one point in their favor.

The Constitution must be a living, breathing document or it dies and our republic dies along with it. The law of the land is only as good as the justice it serves its citizens.

So it's imperative that we secure and protect what little is left of the Bill of Rights before another Bush is elected or crowned king by another corrupt Supreme Court.

Women and gays will never be safe to exercise their full rights as citizens until we do. Now that we have our mandate let's take the opportunity it presents to grant the rest of our people full citizenship with the ERA.

However, the fight is just beginning....
Each state is taking away rights of Americans. Here in CA they voted against equal rights for same-sex marriage. In ARK they voted to ban same sex couples from adopting.

We, as a inclusive Democratic party, need to still combat prejudice, not just skin color but for all. Fight to keep women's rights, gay rights, pro-choice rights.

The radical right conservative repugs have already started to beat down Obama. They also have started talking about possibly breaking their party in two, 1 conservative (Palin type) and 1 centrist (McCain type).

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's government will take over and nationalize La Cristinas, the biggest gold mine in the country owned by Canada's Crystallex, Mining Minister Rodolfo Sanz said Wednesday. The move is part of leftist Chavez's socialist agenda that calls for nationalizing Venezuela's natural resources. Over the past year, he has taken over the electricity, oil, steelmaking, cement and telephone enterprises

"This mine will be seized and managed by a state administration," Sanz said in a statement.

The Cristinas mine, located in southeastern Bolivar state, is estimated to hold 16.9 million ounces of gold, in proven and potential reserves of the precious metal, according to Crystallex data.

Since the start of the year, Venezuela has been withholding environmental permits that allow private companies to extract gold, in lieu of a law that will establish joint ventures with foreign companies with majority stakes by the Venezuelan state.

RICHMOND, Va. - On a rainy Saturday in January 2006, Mark Warner walked quietly from the podium where his successor had just been sworn in as Virginia's governor.

But the hyper-caffeinated, get-it-done-today Warner wouldn't stay away from politics for long.

On Tuesday, he beat another former governor, Republican Jim Gilmore, to claim a seat in the U.S. Senate.

At the end of his term, three-fourths of Virginians approved of Warner's performance, the highest mark for any governor in 20 years. Were Virginia not the only state to forbid consecutive terms for its governors, he easily would have won re-election.

Instead, he explored a run for president before abruptly dropping out "to have a life for a little while."

Warner has a personal fortune of about $200 million thanks to shrewd early investments in cellular licenses. But wealth and success did not come easy.

He grew up in Indiana, Illinois and Connecticut as the son of a Nixon Republican who worked in risk management for an insurance company.

After getting a law degree from Harvard, Warner moved to Washington, where he earned as little as $350 a week as a Democratic fundraiser but developed a skill for networking.

In the early 1980s, Warner learned that the government would give away licenses to radio frequencies that could one day link millions of wireless telephones. He assembled investor groups to apply for licenses in return for his 5 percent share.

In the 1990s, Warner launched a bid to unseat Virginia's courtly Republican senior senator, John Warner. He spent $10 million of his own money in a campaign that featured "Mark Not John" bumper stickers, and lost by 6 points.

It was the closest challenge of John Warner's career, and a friendship ensued between the two men, who are not related.

When John Warner decided not to seek a sixth term in 2007, Mark Warner, 53, immediately became a heavy favorite over Gilmore, his predecessor as governor.

There have been suggestions that he 'reach across the aisle' and appoint Republicans to his Cabinet. I would like to suggest for Sec. of Education, Sen. Lamar Alexander a CONSERVATIVE republican from the State of Tennessee. He is more than qualified as he has served in this post previously and would probably do a good job but more importantly, Tennessee - at this time - has a Democratic Governor and if Sen. Alexander could be talked into accepting a cabinet position, he would be forced to resign from the Senate and Gov. Bredesen would be free to appoint a Democrat to represent Tennessee in the Senate. That would get us one Senator closer to that elusive fillabuster-proof 60!

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal agents Thursday seized quantities of a contaminated blood thinner made in China from a small manufacturer in Cincinnati, officials said.

The blood thinner heparin, given to patients undergoing heart surgery and kidney dialysis, was the focus of a major recall earlier this year after crude drug material from China was found to be contaminated. Hundreds of frail patients suffered severe allergic reactions. The government received reports of nearly 250 deaths.

The FDA had inspected the Cincinnati company, Celsus Laboratories, Inc., in April and at the time found contaminated heparin in two different kinds of products, officials said. A little over 2 pounds of the blood thinner was intended for use directly with patients, and another 31 pounds was to be utilized in diagnostic test kits and medical devices.

The FDA seized the heparin after informing the company that its efforts to notify customers of the contamination problem were unsatisfactory, the agency said in a statement. Drug seizures are a rare penalty for the FDA, since regulators prefer to negotiate with manufacturers to resolve disputes.

A representative who answered the phone at Celsus said the company would have no comment.

House GOP whip Roy Blunt is stepping down, he announced to his colleagues in a letter today.

After sending out the letter, he met with reporters. “I just called Joe Barton [R-Texas] and told him I was looking forward to coming back to the Energy Committee," Blunt told reporters today. "Ten years of asking people to do things they don't want to do is a long time."

His departure clears the way for Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) to try his hand at the whip post. Blunt didn’t formally endorse Cantor but said that "Eric Cantor is doing a great job."

Blunt said he did everything he could but that "somebody else can bring a new bag of tricks to the floor. … I think it is a good idea for someone else to bring a different strategic sense."

In the letter to his Republican colleagues, he tells them that in January 2007, as Democrats took control of Congress, he sat down and wrote himself a letter. It sat unopened on his desk until yesterday...

The first casualty of GOP realignment has been recorded.

AK actually has a legal conflict on the rise. There are two conflicting laws in AK. One says Gov. Palin (R-AK) has the power to appoint a senator while another says a special election must be held. But if nothing else, we all got a close look at the people of AK with the Palin and Stevens candidacy. IMHO, the people of AK have been found lacking good sense in their ignorant electorate and their corrupt politicians.

I know I'm going to piss some people off here, so be it. But you folks that think that Obama is going to the extreme left with gay marriage etc. at this early date, are delusional.

There is too many important issues that concerns every American at this time, for him to do that. Is this the only issue with you people or what?

Do you really think that he is going to cater to you folks at this point, when this country is in dire straits? If you do your more crazy then the trolls.

326
chassie on November 6, 2008 at 07:07 PM

Thanks for the compliment Sally, but that is my true belief.

Obama is too damn smart for that, he is going to be a great centralist president. He is way to smart to cater to one issue people.

Just watch him go tomorrow, when he names some of his cabinet, at 1330 eastern time in a press conference.

A Centralist President is what we need for the good of this country, we don't need extreme left, or extreme right, the middle of the road is always better.

marymac,

I got your drift when I first read it, and agreed. Alexander would be great as Ed Sec. I lost the "smiley face" when I edited that post. It had more to do with having the wingnuts' heads explode.

Anyhoo, the "Council of Economic Advisers" isn't a Cabinet position, and is just a bunch of smart folks with divergent views hashing things out sending and their consensus opinion to PRESIDENT OBAMA.

Ben Stein, that former Nixon speech writer, and current eye drop salesman and erstwhile Economics Professor at Pepperdine University, who got his acting start by being voted the most boring College Professor of all time (earning a cameo in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off") is the son of Nixon's Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. The guy who invented "Wage / Price Freeze" economics. The only problem was that they froze the wages first for several months, and the companies kept raising prices anticipating a
price freeze" and the "wage frozen" were getting gouged.

When they finally put in "price freezes" nobody could afford to buy a damn thing, so business went down the crapper. Price "freeze" lasted about the length of a blink of an eye.

STAGFLATION, BAY BEE!!!!!

If you can find the Nixon "Good Bye" video from the East Room (where they gathered all the WH staff), Ben Stein is the curly haired guy with glasses chewing gum while tears poured out of his eyes.

Those far right wing bastards won't be happy unless gay people are all back in the closet, imprisoned or dead. They don't compromise, and I am not human to them.

The democrats are tolerant to a degree- only to a degree -and we gay folks by and large support them. We give our money and our backs. So you tell me how much money the Dems gave to oppose any of these measures? Because I keep giving in the hopes something will change.

Hope, change, you know the drill. Well Obama says he is proof that anything is possible. Well, I know I've been fighting this battle a long time.

However, if the vacancy occurs on a date that is less than 60 days before or is on or after the date of the primary election in the general election year during which a candidate to fill the office is regularly elected, the governor may not call a special election.

We are a very tolerant lot, but Joe Leiberman crossed the line. When you personally attack our nominee and our party, then you've got problems.

You can argue your point, but Joe personally attacked Obama.

If you haven't noticed Obama gave Palin a pass and the only thing close to a personal attack on McCain was this, "its not that he doesn't care, he just doesn't get it" and that was true.

McCain admitted himself, he didn't understand economics. McCain was born into wealth and lives in it and has no clue what it is like to wonder if you can pay your rent next month. If your job will be shipped overseas, etc.

Lieberman needs to go. The republicans can keep him. Because of Lieberman the republicans told all their radio listeners that we had a majority in the Senate, we did not.

When the market closes in the US, are those traded overnight in other countries so they change and the open is different than the close?

512newsjunkie on November 6, 2008 at 10:14 PM

News, some companies, are traded over night in foreign countries, however not under the same US symbols. Not all companies are traded overseas just some of them. Mostly the major players like McDonald's, WalMart, Microsoft, and Intel, and several others, OK. And some of the overseas, companies are traded here, o.k. Example is Toyota, Honda, some tech companies, ect.

News don't even worry about the bid, that's, hogwash, If you want to buy a stock put in a limit order, or a market order. A market order will be what ever the stock is selling for at the current time which can vary greatly. A Limit order is what your willing to pay for the stock and not one penny more. Here's a example of a Limit order, lets say Wally World is selling for 55.00 per share, and you want to buy it, but you think the price is a little to high, you can put in a buy limit order, for what ever price you specify, lets say for 53.00 on a day like today cuz you can see the market is going down, and you want to get it at a cheaper price. So you put in a buy order for 53.00 or 52.00 or whatever, you might get it for that price and you might not. On a day like the last couple of days you probably will. But if the market turns up you probably won't. I hope I'm not confusing you but this is the way it is.

News, i have been giving you the cream that i can come up with in this bad environment of stock investing. I'm not going to keep doing it, i'm afraid that i might give you a loser, and that might be the one that you pluck down more then you should, then you will be mad at me forever.

chassie on November 6, 2008 at 11:00 PM

I'll never be mad at you. If I take a risk it is mine to take. I appreciate all of the good advice you have given, as you must spend a lot of time learning about these companies and following this stuff. Hey, you were right about Florida, and CHK and the first one. I didn't follow LINE very well. But I would never blame you if I invest in something that doesn't work out.

As you have said, if I don't feel good about it, then I shouldn't buy it.

News, thank you, for understanding.

Here is another one that I'm going to give you, i got lots of them but this one is in the shipping business, at sea. FRONTLINE LTD symbol, (FRO) currently at 30.75 give or take a few pennies, this stock was at 75.00 in the last year.

And here's the kicker news, it has got a UNBELIEVABLE 35 percent quarterly dividend, Yes you heard that right 35 percent on the dividend, if you get in now, check it out for yourself. A dividend like this means your money will double every 2 years even if the stock goes no where. This is like eating Alaska King Crap Legs, on a boat from the sea. It don't get any better then this as long as they keep paying this kind of a dividend.

Thanks Chassie, I was reading the financials on STP. It's interesting how they just come out there with the info. For instance, when the dollar goes up they hurt a little cause they have a lot of overseas business. Also, since they are new and smaller, they can't guarantee that they can get the polysilicon and silicon wafers. They depend on their contracts that sometimes are through distributors of those products. Also, with economies of scale and long term relationships by companies that have been in the business longer, puts them at a disadvantage if there is a shortage of these products.

I'll read up on FRO next. I've got to get into something other than the politics. I like to read and have an accounting degree so reading the financials will be cool. I'll let you know what I did, and thanks again.

I can't believe, or maybe I can, that Obama took MI, PA, OH, FL, when he got PA and OH I was like, it's over, we won. It was a mandate, we got our country back. I feel so much better for the kids future.

Talk with you later and thanks for everything!

News, what i really was trying to say is do your homework, on any stock that you might, or might, not buy. If your not familiar with the particular stock or the business, don't buy it. Here is a example of what I'm talking about, i don't know what your line of work is, or what your expertise is. But study the field that your familiar with, then you will be able to make a educated decision.
In the line of work that your familiar with.c

News that was a 35 percent yearly dividend, on FRO that is paid by the quarter, not a quarterly one.

See this is what I'm talking about i might make a mistake.

Hi everyone--

I am so happy with the election of Obama and Biden. I just wanted to post something here because I know people will read it and I think it is worth considering.
As someone who is progressive I did not care for Palin or her politics. However, I kept my comments focused on the issues and did not engage in name-calling. I see that the media is still having a field day with Palin and now I see that some Repubs are blaming her. Our politicians were dignified toward her throughout the campaign and some of our writers, journalists, media people, political commentators, etc. were as well, and I am proud of them. I am disappointed by the Dems and leftists in the media that sunk to call her names or make sexual remarks. I am also disheartened when I see people blogging and posting throughout cyberspace who make disparaging remarks and send pornographic pictures of likenesses of her throughout cyberspace.

How we respond to events reveals our true values and I thought we were a group that respected women. When I hear Democrats accuse her of sexually inappropriate behavior (the towel story) in an attempt to ruin her credibility by smearing her reputation, I think we need to remember our core values. We don't do that kind of stuff to people, right? Our politicians handled the situation with her very well and it makes me proud to be a Democrat, but when I hear our guys bashing her with name-calling I wonder if they know the core values. What is a liberal, or a progressive, or even a moderate centrist? Because if we don't have core beliefs then we are just Democrats.

It is amusing to hear Repubs now saying that she cost them the election. (What happened to the Repubs in this election is worth analyzing in order to understand them.) No, they cost McCain the election by forcing him to fall in with them lock-step. It is disturbing that their own people picked him in the primaries and yet what their constituents wanted did not matter, the party leaders and major players joined with their media and attacked him until he capitulated to their agenda, which is presently ultra-conservative. They seemed angry with their constituents. The message to their people was we don't care what you want, we want to go in this direction and you have to fall in with us. It is like they DISCIPLINED their own people. Does that sound like a democracy?
So, McCain went the route of backing Bush administration values and the party didn't vote for him. They did not fall in lock-step as ordered. What is disturbing is that now that this has backfired and they lost, they seem to want to scapegoat Palin. Palin didn't create the present state of the party, their leaders have set the tone. Nor did she run it. Yet she will be blamed.

I hope that when political commentators from the Republican side are interviewed on television, our media doesn't let them get away with it. They can try and blame one Governor but the truth is that their people left them because they would not follow along with a far-right agenda. I am sure the voting Republicans in the primaries found it insulting that their pick was not considered "adequate" enough. They offended their own group. To scapegoat Palin shows that they are still not ready to accept the fact that they cost McCain the election. Someone in the media should perhaps point it out to them.

ahhhh, Stevie. Still having those wet dreams about Palin? Maybe you should cash in some of those beer cans you dove into dumpsters for, and get rid of that itch !

You are very amusing with your rants. I could very easily post that link to the newspaper picture of your spawn, so people can judge for themselves what she looks like with those fat hips and thighs. and stringy hair and beady little eyes! :)

Do you know how many gals try and fool their families with boyfriends, when they really are closet homosexuals? But in any case, I sure hope she is using birth control because you would make a lousy grandfather after being such a lousy father. But that is another story for another day!!

260,000 more jobs lost in October. Where did they go? All of those bush tax cuts to the rich, I guess they aren't hiring new people to stand around and do nothing, waiting for customers that aren't there.

If middle class America doesn't have purchasing power, good paying jobs, everyone suffers, including the rich.

newsjunkie on November 7, 2008 at 08:47 AM

If he does miserably, the electorate may require future applicants for the job to have some relevant experience.

Sarah 2012!

Now let's make it clear, is this just a 'taunt" or is it a prediction??? Which is it now, so I know whether to save it for 4 years or not!

If we are going to choose candidates on experience, let's hope the experience is more than stealing clothes on shopping sprees with Political parties donations. Let's hope the experience is a little class, where one does not come out in a towel when the media shows up in one's hotel room! One can hope that the experience is more than a two-bit job as Governor of the least sparsley populated state in the union, where you have to BUY your votes with oil checks. Let's hope the experience includes some Geography, so the future President knows where countries are and which are continents . Let's hope the experience does not make the candidate think they have foreign policy experience, because they can see another country from their country(even when they can't)! Let's hope they understand what a Doctrine is! Let's REALLY hope they read the newspapers and can cite even one of them they read every morning so they know what is going on in the country and the world. Let's hope the experience was not from joining Bizarre anti-American groups trying to get their state annexed from the USA! Or Far out Religious groups that used witchcraft as their foundation.

Kathy, you know what is funny is that the RNC wants the evangelicals, religious right as their base, but they don't want them running the show.

That's why they will ensure Palin's reputation is ruined. Not that that will be a difficult task.
They only want someone who says they are christian and pro life, not someone who would actually implement those policies.

The last thing the RNC and the old fiscal conservatives want is a wacko, tongue speaking, unkown heading up the party.

There is going to be a split, that party is done for a long, long, time.

newsjunkie on November 7, 2008 at 08:55 AM

Hi Kathy, Sure, will be happy to send on the picture. Make sure you do not have a mouthful of coffee when you open it! She is the last one on the right!

Yeah, I have been watching and reading how the Repug party is all in a dither, and going to have this big meetup to try and figure out how to try and fix the little bit they have left. Whether to stay way out there with the Sarah Palin type Religious fanatics, or whether to cater to Normal people, who look at other issues when they vote.

It will be interesting to see if they just decide to fold up their tents totally, and fade away in the night. These neo cons abused their power. They thought they could get away with corruption, crimes, sexual perversion because they had the majority and the Presidency. They thought taking away rights and privacy was their Executive privilege.

Well, now they have had their faces slapped and are down, and maybe, just maybe they may turn back into the party of Lincoln. Civilized human beings.

Sarah 2012! Pleeeease.

Look how she sunk McCain this year. Imagine what she could do at the top of the ticket.

I don't care if the Republican Party sends her to Oxford for the next four years, she will still be the dopey airhead we saw this election...only she's look even more ridiculous when she flubs up.

Some people can't help it. They are doomed by their own personalities. Sarah has the gift.

Bullies may get kick out of seeing others in pain

By Julie Steenhuysen Julie Steenhuysen –

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Brain scans of teens with a history of aggressive bullying behavior suggest that they may actually get pleasure out of seeing someone else in pain, U.S. researchers said on Friday.

While this may come as little surprise to those who have been victimized by bullies, it is not what the researchers expected, Benjamin Lahey of the University of Chicago, who worked on the study, said in a telephone interview.

"The reason we were surprised is the prevailing view is these kids are cold and unemotional in their aggression," said Lahey, whose study appears in the journal Biological Psychology.

"This is looking like maybe they care very much," said Lahey, who worked on the study with Jean Decety, also of the University of Chicago....

For those who don't think Republicans enjoy denying gays and women equal rights under the law, here is the evidence.

They enjoy watching us struggle and anguish over our fate. And, yes, they do turn to their religion and guns rights as a way to justify it, too.

Cowards and bullies.

SandyH on November 7, 2008 at 10:30 AM

I asked my elementary school aged son if he thought men should be able to marry men and women marry women. He said he thought people should be able to marry who they want to marry, although he said it is weird.

That is out of the mouth of a babe. I think he thought it to be weird because he, nor I, know any married gay couples.

I didn't know that gay existed until I was in my 20's. In past generations, it wasn't discussed like it is today. Because of all of these votes in the states, the children, at very young ages are told about it in the south. I have met many homophobes. The children go around in school accusing each other and asking each other if they are gay. They use it to bully because they are taught it is a sim. I find it sad. A third grader doesn't need to be contemplating their sexuality. I'm very pissed at the religious right for doing this to our babies. So much for being for the family.

Gregl- Your 10:11 was exactly right.

I don't bother speaking to Steve, he is a pathetic excuse for a human. I have a great deal of respect for both Pam and Kathy. Sometimes I think people don't realize what they are saying.

Yeah but for the back of the bus thing, you know, I never thought that any state would allow gays to marry. Perhaps I should be satisfied with one or two states having a clue. But I am not. I think that I should be treated like a full human being and be allowed to marry the woman that I love.

And it is personally disappointing for me because I had hoped that we could make our marriage legal in CA. It is where we will eventually retire and it would've made sense. MA or CT not so much.

Cate, I am sorry if my poking at the troll has hurt your feelings. There is nobody more tolerant than I am , with a gay step-brother in law and a 20 year old nephew . I could personally care less what orientation a person has, it is not my business.

It is only because this one troll has such a fear of gays, that I find tormenting him particularly fun.

Please accept my apologies to you. And come and visit MA and CT. You may decide you like it! Climate wise, it is not as nice as CA, but with NYC and Boston close by, with open minded Liberals in charge, it is a breath of fresh air !

Doo-Bee-Doo-Bee-Doo on November 7, 2008 at 12:12 PM

I spent the weekend before Election Day in a GOTV effort in Columbus, Ohio. We made the trip from Washington, DC (having wrapped up the District). I wrote this Sunday night before the election:

“We phone banked, canvassed (in a Republican suburb), did visibility for Mary Jo Kilroy for Congress at today's Obama rally, and lobbied EVERYONE we saw. We even went bowling after a long day walking the neighborhoods.
The Obama rally at the State Capitol was an inspiration. I looked back at the adoring faces behind me as Barack spoke. Young and old, black, white, brown. And so many parents with kids, just wanting them to be a part of history, imploring them to listen. Proud black families. And a hand-written sign: "Rosa Parks sat so that Martin Luther King, Jr. could walk. Martin Luther King, Jr. walked so that Barack Obama could run. Barack Obama ran so that our children could fly.". A sweet compelling sentiment.
If WE win, I will be thrilled and exhausted. And if the country loses, I'll be disappointed, but not because of lack of effort. And finally (Blackberry fatigue!)... as we were leaving the bowling alley, the cashier (an older white woman) said she had not decided yet. We told her of the incredible opportunity that is before us: to elect an inspiring young, intelligent, thoughtful, and capable leader. I introduced her to Asa and my childhood friend who last campaign with me in New Haven 35 years ago but who made the trip from Boston. I explained that I had never invested so much time and effort for a candidate but so deeply believed in this choice for us all and for a new civility and progress in meeting the country's collective challenges. I think she was convinced and suspect fate brought us to the bowling alley!
I suppose I may have grown a little cynical about politics and the partisan sniping that has stymied so many good things (like reauthorization of SCHIP). The Obama campaign and incredible outpouring of support and organization has renewed my faith.”

Now, we’ve won. “Yes We Can” has become “Yes We Did” but now the real work begins.

(Of course, they're still counting the votes for Mary Jo in Ohio. Keep counting!)
