You have got to be kidding me - Rick Warren? Couldn't Obama pick someone just a bit better? This creep is a joke! He doesn't represent the Democrat Party and certainly doesn't have my values at heart.

A young lady here in our hometown recently passed away giving birth. She was told that she should have an abortion because giving birth might be fatal to her. She was a devote Catholic and her family believed that there shouldn't be any abortions - no matter what. She died.

This is sick. And Rick Warren promotes this.

What is the matter Obama? Did you have a brain fart?

and Good Morning to all you, too.

Life is too short to worry about Palin's intellect or Rick Warrens's either for that matter.

I like Blue's sense of humor and let's face it... Obama is already running for re-election.

Don't worry; be happy that Cheney is being drummed out of the White House and that Palin is stuck up there in the wilderness...except for those times she'll venture into Jeb Bush country seeking something that is far beyond her grasp.

All I want for Christmas the Lord has already provided.

Well, I will complain about Obama picking Warren because it sends the wrong message to the American people.

Obama was voted in but that by no means says that he'll be voted in again in 4 years. It's not a given. If he crosses the line too many times then his ass will be history too.

Rick Warren is no better then Pat Robertson or Dobson. And I don't think this blog and the group who blogs here would stand for either of these two freaks either.

Yes, there are more important things we should be addressing other then Rick Warren's time in the spot light but if there is a pattern here with Obama catering to the right - then he will be in trouble. His base will not tolerate him going right of center. We put him in - we can take him out. Enough said.

Local credit comes now in the image of our banks behaving like a clenched fist around a penny. So - who can trust anybody in these last creepy days of GW? If you are GW, certainly nobody wearing shoes! I can see the book "How to Leave Your Nation in an Economic Dumpster" by the GOP

Back on the topic of GM - I think they should have been given a green light and the funding to pursue their new vehicle "The Volt."

Back on the topic of Unions - they are not the problem. Get a national health care plan. Unions build quality. Deere has learned this with its skid loader and its gator...brought them both back up north to union shops - because of quality issues in non-union plants.

Built it (the new generation of autos) and they the consumer will buy it....once we get some confidence back in our local banks...and that won't happen until the shoe ducker leaves office.

If you are "pro-choice", then you must respect all the choices people make even if you don't agree with them.

All I know about Rick Warren is that he's one of those mega church pastors, and he wrote a book.
I tend to be wary of those guys.
Why didn't Obama pick Sojourner's Jim Wallis if he wanted an Evangelical?
It seems to me that Wallis' ideas are more in line with Obama's

11
Butte on December 18, 2008 at 11:04 AM

Obamamma,

Obama just asked that question on CNN by reporters, about naming Warren to speak.

His comment was, that although they hold different opinions on a number of issues like Gays and abortion, that this country needs to come together on those issues they do agree on.
He is also have a guy named Lawry speak, who is VAST difference to Warren.

He is already starting to campaign for 2012, and if he has to kiss some ass along the way, I do not care, as long as he does not change his mind on things he told us he would do.

I am getting a little bit tired of Blue Dogs and New Dems who want to be sure business gets priority over people, and who want to keep shutting so-called "liberals" out.

SO now Evan Bayh wants to form a Blue Dog coalition in the Senate that is just like that in the House. Here are the ones who are already Senate New Dems...might include those who are still around.

Who might be in Bayh's new centrist group.

Since Blackwater is losing its license in Iraq possibly, how are these security contractors licensed in countries of the world? How are the licensed in each state, or do they have blanket immunity to state law? I can understand how governments can control private commercial government contractors, but do governments have control over another government intelligence agency? Or can Intelligence agencies monitor the Internet from within the United States filtering U.S. to U.S. communication?

Interesting list, however, LIEberman shouldn't be in that list, he's not a Democrat, and Sen Max Bacchus would be a possibility since he's a K-street Democrat.

As far as I'm concerned the Blue Dogs are nothing but Republicans running under false colors, like pirate ships.

16
Butte on December 18, 2008 at 11:16 AM

Pro-choice is just one of the areas that this jerk is against. Not who I would support to be on a national spot light such as he will have. No - and it's not that he is going to make statement against abortion or anything else he is against. It's the general feeling that Obama caved in to the right - that he's trying to play both sides. I agree, there are items that we as a country must meet in the middle on if we are to go forward.

But not on this day - and most certainly not with this person. Warren represents everything that we as Democrats oppose, not just freedom of choice but gay rights as well. And remember, he comes from a gang of people who think that those among us who don't believe in Jesus will spend forever in hell.

No - I stand very firm on this. Obama has made a mistake on this. He is under fire and the flames will get hotter today and the coming days. If he doesn't reconsider placing this Warren person in the national spot light - then I think Obama is off to a very rocky start... I know for one who supported him and gave money to him - he will disappoint me with this pick.

I am hoping that he didn't choose Warren by himself and that a lesser staff member made this decision. If it were Obama himself - then shame on him...

I don't see how Blackwater can have any blanket immunity to state law, and that would surely go away with the Bushiato.
Sounds to me like the prosecutors are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as far as any immunity letting Blackwater get away with crime, and are lining up their indigenous waterfowl.
Couldn't happen to a more deserving outfit.

Lets get Caroline Kennedy in the Senate to fight the Blue Dogs Progressive Conservatives business interests. "We the people" can then have a voice in the Democratic Party. It seems that Liberals, Constitutionalists, and 50 % of the Democratic Party has been left off the platform.

The Democratic Party and America is beyond President Elect Obama. Sure he is the key but we are the people that must run this nation with our birthrights of History and Heritage. Because our children need dreams to build their futures upon, and no one person can deliver that it takes "We the people" teamwork.

Evan Bayh is from the old school, America needs progress not the same old politics. We need to have fresh air in Congress of Made in America values.

19
YoungPoet on December 18, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Ok - so he told CNN that he choose this guy becaue even if he disagrees with him, that it shows the country that even if you disagree with someone, bring them to the table and start the talking progress. I understand that but as I have said - not on this day. Obama can bring anyone he feels like it to the table on Jan 22 - who cares.

But this is the day the whole world will be watching - and he brings in this creature. Rick Warren is a class act jerk - loud mouth SOB.

Nope - big mistake on Obama's part - huge...

20

Actually I can see that it might be a good tactic. By reaching out to the right, Obama might reduce resistance to his planned policies, but when the right wingers bite that hand, he can then go ahead with his policies, and when the right wingnuts start whining like you know they will, he can point out quite truthfully, that he tried to reach out and they rejected the offer.
In politics, as in war you can try different tactics, but you don't change strategy.

22

How come Pro Life people scream about respecting life and the right to live, when so many condone the death sentence? I am Pro Choice, if I was a women, I would choose to respect birth, but also I would choose to never push the death sentence button.

This is curious that in the Catholic Church that I have faith in, they can refuse communion because one is Pro Choice and give communion to Pro Life people, who support the death sentence. Are not both a sin to the church?

Lester, I am watching with amusement as Republicans try and portry her as no experience at all. They forget, she was born into the White House, raised with uncles and cousins , a brother who were all deeply into politics, and it must have been the every night topic . Yet she supposedly has to have been involved at some level. Too bad she wasn't a mayor of a hick 5000 person town, or spent a year as a Governor of a piss poor state. THEN they would think she was ok !

24
PamB on December 18, 2008 at 11:32 AM

I'm not a fan of Rick Warren's theology, but his appeal is that of a pragmatic approach of being "Purpose Driven." This has appeal in a time where it will take a sense of purpose to dig out from this economic crisis. I look at Rick Warren as "starter theology" - a primer - something to get going on...not something with great depth for a longer view...my trust is that since Obama has read and digested Rhinehold Neighbur - Obama himself will provide the theological depth that Warren lacks.

I agree with you about Warren, except that I consider Warren too 'self-centered' and 'self-egrandizing.' I feel that Warren stepped over the edge when he held "The Saddleback Forum" which as both an American and a Christian, I found offensive. I would feel better about him (and a lot of other 'men of the cloth') if he showed respect for the Bill of Rights and honored the separation of church and state by getting out of and staying out of politics and government.
However, if President Obama has to choose someone for that task, Rick Warren is one of the lesser offensive Pres. Obama could use to pay homage' to the Christians who wised up and left the Republican Party to vote for him.

Obama Looking at $850 Billion Jolt to the Economy
Wednesday 17 December 2008
by: Jim Kuhnhenn, The Associated Press

Washington - Anxious to jolt the economy back to life, President-elect Barack Obama appears to be zeroing in on a stimulus package of about $850 billion, dwarfing last spring's tax rebates and rivaling drastic government actions to fight the Great Depression.

Obama has not settled on a grand total, but after consulting with outside economists of all political stripes, his advisers have begun telling Congress the stimulus should be bigger than the $600 billion initially envisioned, congressional officials said Wednesday.

Obama is promoting a recovery plan that would feature spending on roads and other infrastructure projects, energy-efficient government buildings, new and renovated schools and environmentally friendly technologies.

There would also be some form of tax relief, according to the Obama team, which is well aware of the political difficulty of pushing such a large package through Congress, even in a time of recession. Any tax cuts would be aimed at middle- and lower-income taxpayers, and aides have said there would be no tax increases for wealthy Americans.

Bill Gate America Needs Windows Vista Security

I wish Congress would investigate, why Microsoft is failing to protect the consumer and "We the people" have to pay a $50 a year fee for Virus Insurance that acts like Katrina Insurance bleeding American pocket books, and sometimes their life savings.

I think Bill Gates needs to be cited for contempt by "We the people." So sad that when people can hardly pay for car insurance they need Window Insurance paying for those Tory Ceo fringe benefits. I paid for Virus Insurance and it still fails to do the job, like it was built with Katrina loop holes in it.

Microsoft’s Security Vista Nightmare (Part Of Poem rest on Internet)

Security flaws of break in woes
Patches that refuse to load fixes,
Like a nightmare that never ends
Window panes break in intrusions.

what the hell is wrong with clinton having collected money from foreign countries which was applied to various charities and his presidential library??? i really think we democrats are letting the most corrupt political party in history ( bush and friends ) make us crazy about perfectly acceptable behavior...

"WASHINGTON - Former President Bill Clinton's foundation has raised at least $46 million from Saudi Arabia and other foreign governments that his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton may end up negotiating with as the next secretary of state.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave $10 million to $25 million to the William J. Clinton Foundation, a nonprofit created by the former president to finance his library in Little Rock, Ark., and charitable efforts to reduce poverty and treat AIDS. Other foreign government givers include Norway, Kuwait, Qatar, Brunei, Oman, Italy and Jamaica. The Dutch national lottery gave $5 million to $10 million..."

39
gregg on December 18, 2008 at 01:25 PM

Unless the oath of office for the president and vice president was secretly changed to only protect us against foreign enemies, I remember this little part of the oath that says "to protect and defend against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC."
Bush, Cheney, and Rove insists that the torture policies (among other things) were instrumental and “directly responsible for the fact that we’ve been able to avoid or defeat further attacks against the homeland for 7 1/2 years.”
Really...
On Dec 12, 2008 an Oregon bank was bombed by a "DOMESTIC terrorist." This attack killed 2 cops, critically injured a third cop, and a hurt a bank worker.

It is obvious this whole 7 and a half years of safety meme isn't only a lie, it's utter B.S.

And what about the first 6 months of the presidency?
Who was president when 9/11/01 happened?
By the minimal standards set forth by the oath of office, this presidency has been a failure. They have failed to protect us from foreign and domestic terrorists. Don't let him forget it!

The infrastructure repairs are only good sense. Not only will they add money to the economy by providing jobs, but because the states have many projects on hold because they haven't had any help funding projects fro the Bushiato, they have plans, impact statements, etc. already drawn up.
All they need to do is to update the bill of materials and labor costs and they will be ready to go.
While those projects are in the works, they can then start drawing up projects like upgrading government buildings to make them greener and more energy efficient, which aren't in the planning stages yet.
It's a win/win situation and I hope the Republicans don't find some stupid reason/s to try to kill it.

GregL on December 18, 2008 at 01:17 PM

GregL,

That's so true. The people who get things done in Washington are those that build a variety of coalitions.

If Warren says something derogatory about gays or abortion at the inauguration, he'll likely face a barrage of shoes flying by his head. I'm figuring he's smarter than that.

I’m also thinking that the gay and lesbian community has never been that crazy about Obama to begin with because he does not support gay marriage. This announcement was the final straw for many of them after Proposition 8. I understand their anger.

I haven’t been all that thrilled about some of Obama's Cabinet choices, but I’m not going to let bother me. If Obama vigorously pursues the middle class agenda he promised and appoints judges that support progressive views, I’ll feel better.

But if he doesn’t move fast enough to implement the agenda he sold us on, then I’ll come down on him hard. We don’t have time to dither dally making “friends” with people who don’t respect us. Let them have some input but don’t let them get in your way.

Make them respect you.

bbl.

Rick Warren is far better than the left behind black hole apocalyptic crap (Time LaHaye and Tom Jenkins/John Haggee's recooked dispensationalism from John Darby) that drove the GOP machine and it's exploitation of 9/11 to go to war in Iraq. That's what I was starting to hear in your review of Warren.

I have a disdain for civil religion - and Warren's entrance into the election - I agree - was unfortunate. But - on the other hand... it's where alot of people are at - like it or not...hopefully his theology grows...maybe - mabe not...he's just primer....Obama reading Neighbur...that's light years from where GW is at...(recall Moyer's investigation into GW's conversion experience?....scary stuff....). And having Rick Warren on the agenda because he wants his respect? Let me say this - ok so Obama has made a choice in letting this blow hard at the big show. Do you really think Warren will turn around and respect those of us on the left? This guy will try to take us down at every chance he gets.

I'm so sick of our side always trying to play the nice guy while the other side keps on kicking us when we're down. How many times do we say - oh if we're nice to them - they'll be nice back at us?

Having picked Warren was a major mistake - too many more of these types of "mistakes" and Obama will not only have the right to fight but the hard core left as well...

Take care - everyone - huge winter storm bearing down on us...

I get a good laugh when I tell the conservatives that I know that they are listening to and - worse - adopting as their own the opinions of a college drop out who has no formal education nor practical experience in most matters that he 'spouts off' about on his show. It blows their minds.
As to the end of the Coolidge/Hoover caused depression of the 1930's, when I am confronted with 'stupid-speak', I have to remind them that the economic recovery provided by New Deal programs lasted well beyond WWII and actually lasted well into the 1970's. The middle class was the strongest in the history of the country from 1950 to 1970 and only started to decline in strength after their Saint Ray-Gun started to implement his failed programs.
They really, really hate it when I dis-credit Saint Ronnie of the fundies!

"As Kim Bobo, the executive director of Interfaith Worker Justice and author of Wage Theft in America, denounced the Republican attacks on the Web radio show I co-host: "It's despicable that they would use what's indeed a crisis in the industry to bash unions. Unions are both one of the best ways to get a middle-class job and one of the best vehicles for stopping and deterring wage theft," which robs millions of workers of owed salaries and overtime. "We need more unions in the society, not fewer," she declared."

WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama on Thursday defended his choice of a popular evangelical minister to deliver the invocation at his inauguration, rejecting criticism that it slights gays.

The selection of Pastor Rick Warren brought objections from gay rights advocates, who strongly supported Obama during the election campaign. The advocates are angry over Warren's backing of a California ballot initiative banning gay marriage. That measure was approved by voters last month.

But Obama told reporters in Chicago that America needs to "come together," even when there's disagreement on social issues. "That dialogue is part of what my campaign is all about," he said.

Obama also said he's known to be a "fierce advocate for equality" for gays and lesbians, and will remain so...

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D95591H00&show_article=1

I applaud the President-elect for his choice of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration. While I do not necessarily agree with some of Pastor Warren's political views, he does an excellent job at representing his religion and his religious beliefs. If the GLBT community wants to complain, that is their right under the 1st Amendment. But President Obama will represent all 300+ million of us, not just a small minority of people living an alternative lifestyle.

BAGHDAD (AP) - A spokesman for Iraq's prime minister says the journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush has asked for a pardon.

Spokesman Yassin Majid says that in a letter sent Thursday to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki the journalist described his behavior as "an ugly act" and asked to be pardoned.

Majid says that Muntadhar al-Zeidi in the letter recalls the kindness the prime minister once showed him during an interview in 2005 and asked for al-Maliki to show him kindness once again.

Al-Zeidi, a correspondent for an Iraqi-owned television station based in Cairo, Egypt, could face two years imprisonment for insulting a foreign leader.

If the reports of Mr. al-Zeidi being roughed up in custody are accurate, then a pardon would be in order. It still ticks me off that our Secret Service was caught so flatfooted in this affair though, no pun intended. Besides, it's our job to complain about the POTUS becuase, after all, he is our POTUS. And the attempted assault by Mr. al-Zeidi is a crime whether we agree with his action or not.

Pam: We had two (2) all too brief years escape from the supply-siders and in that period, President Clinton and the Democratic Congress were able to do just enough to stop the damage wrought by Ray-Gun and Pappy and start an economic recovery. Then, the Grinch that stole Christmas and his contract with America started to get some traction and before we knew it, it was gone. Thankfully, the gains that the middle class was able to make as a result of that brief two years sustained us for several years into the dub's presidency but nothing prepared us, not economically - not in anyway - for the tragedy and travesty that was the administration of dub and dickhead!

When the UAW, is only 10 percent of the automakers cost, of a vehicle. I know that I should be insulted by the action, after all, even if I am ashamed of him - he is still a fellow American and our President; but, try as I might, I can't seem to get upset, not even a little bit. When I see the clip, I find myself thinking, "well, at least he doesn't duck lame." and other similar, silliness. I swear, all I can think of is "someone's going to make a lot of money with a new video game!" Maybe it's because it was meant not so much an attack but as the biggest insult the man could muster - kind of like spitting on someone. Not intended to do any real physical harm - just show complete contempt and disrespect. But, I do know that you are right, even if we dislike and are ashamed of him, he is still 'ours' - at least for now.

Death map USA: Natural disaster hotspots revealed

Southerners are more like to die from the effects of the weather than people living in any other region of the US.

But for all the attention garnered by catastrophic hurricanes such as Katrina and Andrew, simple heatwaves kill far more people than all natural disasters combined, according to a newly published county-by-county map of natural hazard deaths (see the maps here).

Other extreme summer hazards, such as floods, and cold winter weather also outranked hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires, according to geographers Kevin Borden and Susan Cutter, of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Overall, natural disasters account for less than 5% of natural hazard deaths across the US.

Large cities like San Francisco and New York are among the safest places to live, but if city living isn't for you, the odds of dying from the weather are lowest in the Midwest...

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16287-death-map-usa-natural-disaster-hotspots-revealed-.html

This is an interesting article about who is at risk from natural disasters based on data compiled on a geographic basis. Have a look. I hope you're not living in one of the "red zones".

Report urges timetable for human mission to Mars

The Obama administration should set a concrete schedule for human Mars missions, and make sure new hardware developed for NASA's return to the Moon can be adapted for missions to other destinations, a new report says.

With a new US president set to take charge of the White House and many questions hanging over NASA's future, many have been trying to advise the agency about where it should go from here.

President-elect Barack Obama's transition team has been very tight-lipped, but if the Obama administration takes its cue from the preponderance of advice it's getting, then human missions to Mars may well move up in priority.

Back in November, the Planetary Society, a space advocacy group, released a report called "Beyond the Moon", which called for delaying new missions to the Moon and channelling more resources into paving the way for human missions to Mars instead (see Moon takes a backseat in new space plan).

Now, an independent group of space experts, led by David Mindell of MIT, is calling for a timeline for human Mars missions, and urging that any Moon hardware be designed with other destinations in mind as well...

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16277-report-urges-timetable-for-human-mission-to-mars.html

Yes, it is time to go to Mars and to establish a permanent presence on Luna. I know that this will be expensive however, this is a project, a peaceful project, that could jumpstart the economy as opposed to WW2 finally curing the Great Depression.

Mankind needs to reach for the stars. There are over 6.5 billion of us now. By 2050, not withstanding some great catastrophe, we'll be at 9 to 10 billion. If humanity is to survive, we need to get all of our proverbial eggs out of one basket, namely Earth.

Somewhere in space, there is an asteroid the same size or larger that killed off the dinosuars 65 million years ago and it is on a collison course with Earth. That is referred to an an ELE, extinction level event. It may not get here this month, this year, or even in this millenia but, sooner or later, it will get here. The next known close encounter is scheduled for 2036. If the math is correct, it will pass closer to us than Luna whose average orbit is around 380K KM. In astronomical terms, that is very, very close.

Some will argue that robots can do our exploring. That it is safer and less expensive for a robot ot explore than us. While that may be true in some respects, nothing can replace the human mind and eyes for exploration. Where is your sense of adventure? With that mentality, we'd all still be living in Europe and the Native Americans would run the show here.

In closing, this will take a top of the line sales job to convince the knuckle dragging segment of the sheeple. They won't be able to grasp the concept or the importance of manned spaceflight. But I still keep going back to the eggs in a basket argument. We owe it to ourselves and our progeny to do this now. One day, it really will be too late.

Most Americans have long known that the horrors of Abu Ghraib were not the work of a few low-ranking sociopaths. All but President Bush’s most unquestioning supporters recognized the chain of unprincipled decisions that led to the abuse, torture and death in prisons run by the American military and intelligence services.

Haynes; and potentially other top officials, including the former White House counsel Alberto Gonzales and David Addington, Vice President Dick Cheney’s former chief of staff.

The report shows how actions by these men “led directly” to what happened at Abu Ghraib, in Afghanistan, in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and in secret C.I.A. prisons.

The officials then issued legally and morally bankrupt documents to justify their actions, starting with a presidential order saying that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to prisoners of the “war on terror” — the first time any democratic nation had unilaterally reinterpreted the conventions

Good day, Dems! Hi MaryMac!

First of all, I understand why people are upset with Rick Warren speaking at the Inauguration. Preacher Warren is a symbol of homophobia and anti-choice. He positions are anti-Constitution. He's not my kind of leader.

Considering that many African-Americans voted for the Prop 8, I would think this would be a chance to show a better type of Christian leader to many groups. Instead, it's reinforcing the notion that AA are anti-gay. This is a big mistake, imo. Besides, does anybody think that rick Warren's lame flock is going to contribute to democrats?

Personally, I'm expecting an Administration that respects the Constitution, and stands up for the Constitution. This is how we restore FAITH in America. No more EXCLUSIONARY leaders like Robertson making political calls and laws.
I've had enough of these JUDGMENTAL preachers.

I understand the need to reach out to evangelicals. But this is not the way to do it, IMO. Reach out to them by showing how Democrats embrace things that Jesus taught: PEACE, health care for all, and respecting the environment.

I'm glad I'm not gay, and worked to get Obama elected. Because if I was, I would be insulted at the sight of Obama with this sexist homophobe bigot of a preacher on this long-awaited Day of Change. It would ring hollow. And I'm sure more gay marriage supporting people helped Obama win than these judgmental so-called Christians.

I would've picked Pastor Schuler. And besides, has anybody ever met a good "Rick?" They are all shady car or insurance sales people. And we know the track record of preachers who rail against homosexuals... think Ted Haggard. We have so many good Christians out there. Why not get one when the whole world is watching on this historic day?

I believe we are all expecting a POTUS that respects the Constitution. That is all the more reason to have Pastor Warren deliver the invocation.

The 1st Amendment guarantees us all the right to practice our religion as Pastor Warren does. He has his faith. You have yours. Though based on your comments, I wouldn't expect you to apply for membership at Saddleback and neither would Pastor Warren.

And if you're ready to disqualify him for his views of his faith, is that not exclusionary; the same type of exclusionary tactics you accuse him of? Surely you're not going to be judgemental of a man practicing his faith, are you? If you are, then you've just put yourself in the same category as the people you rail against in your post. What Obama has done would be like Strong Thruman giving the oath to Obama....

All I'm saying is that if Obama wants to cross the lines and include the right - so be it - but how far will he travel before many of you say enough Obama... this is just one ball he's thrown in the ring..how much more does the left have to give up to smooth everything over with the far right (and Rick Warren represents the FAR RIGHT).

How much Chassie are you willing to give up to the far right? School prayer? Women's rights? More tax breaks for the wealthy on the backs of the poor?

How much I ask you?

Before you start pointing fingers at a person = perhaps you'd better stop and ask if this choice is really good for the Dem Party? Or are you willing to give up more just to "smooth" things over for the right?

And by the way - before you start calling others by the term "asshats" you'd better be careful of who you are talking to. It could well be someone who you have spoken to for a long time but has changed their names.... name calling hurts.

Lizard People, the Flying Spaghetti Monster and Frankenstein were among the candidates puzzled over today by the state Canvassing Board members as they spent their third day of awarding Election Day challenged ballots in the drum-tight U.S. Senate contest between Republican Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken.

After finishing off Franken's 420 regular challenges Wednesday, the board started the day on Coleman's 800 or so challenges. The Coleman campaign withdrew 409 challenges late Wednesday, after earlier restoring 204 challenges they reconsidered once they saw how the board was judging the ballots.

At day's end, Coleman held a single-digit lead over Franken...

This is FL2000 all over again. Unfortunately, whomever wins the MN Senate seat is going to have a cloud over their win for the next six years. Regardless, I'd prefer that cloud to be over Al Franken than Sen. Coleman. As we can remember, the only reason Sen. Coleman is in that seat is becuase of the untimely death of his predcessor, Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN).

Ok Chassie - I'm not going to press the issue further either but all I'm saying is that if I were a gay person, I would be totally bummed by Obama's choice. There are many others he could have choosen. Rick Warren is a young Jerry Falwell - no less. He represents everything that we as Democrats are not.

But more: if this is a choice that Obama has screwed up on - what other choices will he make once he's in office that will be so centered that you won't be able to tell him apart from McCain? We are still a 2 party system - not one. I don't want my President to gravel at the feet as someone like Rick Warren. this guy is a jerk, a bigot and wants all the limelight he can muster. In fact, every talk show wants to do an interview with Rick Warren where he can further spew his brand of hate and Obama has opened the door for this jerk.

I'm totally disgusted tonight. And if you listen to most of talk left, including Olberman - they all agree...bad choice.

96 BobVADemocratHawk on December 18, 2008 at

Nice spin, Bob. Clearly, you know the difference in the Right to Free Speech, and an elected party leader associating with someone who wants to strip the rights from Americans? You might see how some people can ask, "you call this change?"

Are you trying to say that this is Obama's way of proving he supports Free-speech? Yes, that's your argument. If you consider the constituencies who made 1/20/09 reality, it's a big loser, Bob. If you think that making this subtle point when the whole world is watching, at the cost of anti-discrimination Democrats, pro-choice women, and equal-rights gays who've fought FOR EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW, you clearly have ZERO regard for Americans who've fought for equal protection, against discrimination, and for freedom of choice.

Real smart, Bob. Tick off the pro-choice and right to marry groups, which must be MILLIONS, in order to make the point that you support free speech, even if it's preaching discrimination. Smart?

In closing, Bob, thank you for having me clarify this issue. This "church Leader" is preaching discrimination, and openly campaigns for taking rights away from Americans. That's not being judgmental. That's a fact. Warren can say whatever he wants. President-elect Obama does not need to give him a global stage to speak ON THIS DAY THAT MILLIONS OF GAY AND PRO-CHOICE WOMAN MADE POSSIBLE. I understand why many would take this preacher selection as a slap in the face. I can't believe you would use lame example.

btw, a troll says he comes here to talk with you and one other person. Way to go, Bob. Not only do you support this person who preaches DISCRIMINATION and anti-choice, you actions support a troll who comes here and hurls disgusting insults at older good democratic woman who deserve to have a forum to post. Way to go, Bob. You like people who are mean to woman, and openly campaign to strip Constitutional rights.
I understand your right to free speech, even if it's un-American and deplorable. How's it feel to be in the same category as Rush Limbot?

Merry Christmas!

Christmas: God’s Grace at Work
2008/12/18

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT)

*** *** *** ***

God says, “I will give you my grace.” What is grace? That’s when God gives you what you need, not what you deserve. Grace is when God says, “I’m going to take your problem and make it my problem.” Grace is God’s Riches given to you At Christ’s Expense.

The Bible says: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV). In other words, you can’t earn your way to heaven. You can’t work your way in. It’s just a gift.

Did you know that’s why we give gifts at Christmas? Because that’s when God gave the gift of his Son to you – by grace. We give gifts because God gave us the greatest gift at Christmas.

I know I don’t look like it today, but for three years I was a lifeguard. And every lifeguard knows you can’t save someone as long as they are trying to save themselves. If somebody is drowning and flailing around in panic, a lifeguard knows to just stay back for a few seconds and wait until they give up. Because if you try to save them while they’re trying to save themselves, they will pull you under too.

When they finally give up, they relax, you put your arm around them and just swim back to shore. It’s really quite easy.

God wants to save you. Jesus Christ wants to save you from your hurts, your habits, and your hang-ups. He wants to save you for his purpose and by his grace. But you’ve got to quit trying to do it yourself. You’ve got to relax. You need to let go and let God be God.

132

Well that is bunk. And the newspaper of record is not saying that. The 89 votes is based on readers evaluating the contested votes on line. Then when they are done voting and they haven't gotten to all of them (as few would) the paper projects how they voted unto the ones they didn't vote to determine how they would have voted if they had. It only proves that Democrats have more time to mess with that than Republicans do.

The fact is that not much has changed and Coleman will win by about what was reported on election night.

Chassie,

No, my comment was not out-of-line. Bob was out-of-line when he TRIED to say that I'm LIKE Warren because I dare pass judgment on Warren. This was a totally disingenuous argument, IMO. Or maybe he really does think that I'm like Warren? Either way, it was in insult, and Bob knew he had it coming. I don't preach discrimination, anti-choice, and fundamentalist garbage like Warren.

And if I did preach discrimination, I sure wouldn't expect to be up on the stage with Obama ON THIS HISTORIC DAY. The people who elected Obama (Democrats) deserve a day when we don't have to put up with these Republican Fundamentalists. Let me be clear, 1/20/09 was to be OUR DAY. We've worked, we've waited, and we deserve to put our best face on for the WORLD. But now it will be polluted with this discriminating, exclusionary, anti-constitution, hypocritical Christian.

Furthermore, Bob made that back-hand at me because he was too weak to come out and say "what about us "pro-lifers" who like Warren? Instead, he tries to twist my words and character. FYI, when someone attacks me, he/she should expect a reply, unless they are a troll and I just ignore them.

For instance, some troll recently called me a "pos man." I ignored it because I got a kick out of some idiot, who routinely stalks and attacks woman ON-LINE, say that I'm a pos. HA. Yeah, like I hound woman I don't know at the RNC site and call them nasty names. I just like to ignore the idiots.

I'm sorry Bob didn't ignore my comment. I'm sorry Bob attacked my character. (I was really going to spend my time posting on that goof-ball Fred Thompson's economic stimulus package comments.) I'm sorry Bob made me drive home the point that what the transition team plans for DAY ONE to gays and pro-choice woman and all egalitarian democrats is just plain wrong, and sends the wrong message to the loyalists who made CHANGE happen.

IMO, if you want to reach out to fundamentalist nuts like Warren, have them over for coffee another day. But damn it, 1-20-09 is supposed to be about CHANGE... not more of these Republican fundamentalist nuts. Let just say this... we should be very proud on 1-20-09. Sadly, Rick Warren does not rise to the level of UNITY and togetherness that we fought so hard for. While I am BYD, I have a right, and ethical duty, to speak up for fairness and the Constitution.

Because the voting machines are owned by corrupt partisan companies like Diebold, they are able to cook the numbers and hand the election to Republicans. Thankfully, we had paper ballots this time to recount. In many places, Americans don't have paper ballots to re-count... just an electronic print-out, with no way of knowing how the people really voted.

I hope that Congress will pass a law that requires paper ballots. The best way to avoid WHOLESALE FRAUD is vote-by-mail with hand counts. We need to get these e-vendors (often with criminal records and a histories of fraud in the gaming industries) out of the democracy process. We have out-sourced our elections to private, partisan companies, and what a dear price America has paid.

Here's one for the real patriots: "Grand Theft Election 2004."

Essie,

Go ahead and rub it in...another granddaughter. Some people have all the luck. Two daughters and then three granddaughters. You're in the pink, kiddo.

I don't mean to be disrespectful of the prophets here, but...most women do not "(have) sorrow because (their) hour has come". You can't wait to get on with it after carrying around so much weight in the most awkward way. I hope your daughter has an easy time of it.

You do realize having two granddaughters born in December is going to drive you nuts what with all the Christmas festivities each year, too? It's going to be non-stop parties.

Can't say the same for the blog today. Maybe everyone should calm down until they hear what the man has to say January 20? I'm not expecting a miracle but who knows? The importance of the moment might just melt his cruel, cruel heart.

And this is nothing new either in the great scheme of things. I've been listening to Catholic priests most of my life telling me that because I'm a woman I'm not worthy. Very few have had the nerve to say it to our face. When they do, we ignore them...and teach our children just the opposite.

You really can't expect to banish these hypocrites from public gatherings. They have become a fixture. They're a common nuisance and have been around since that Snake in the Garden of Eden. Funny how they never notice the resemblance to themselves.

If you're angry, use that energy to work even harder to stop the discrimination. Don't turn away from those who want to help you. It's really counter-productive. You will overcome someday. Remember what Gandhi and King told us...and showed us.

I'll now duck as the shoes start flying in my direction. I can take it. I went through childbirth and lived to do it again.

Think about what I've said and don't be so disheartened, my good Dems.

Good night, all.

Sadly, people who follow Mister Hollow Holy man Warrren will likely be ticked about this, and not care who spoke on day one:

Gay Man for Navy Secretary?
Newsweek

By Jessica Bennett and Daniel Stone

As gay activists protest the selection of evangelical megapastor Rick Warren to give the inaugural invocation, they could have reason to cheer a future Obama announcement. Sources tell NEWSWEEK that the president-elect is considering the appointment of the first openly gay chief of a military branch.

Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York, is being backed by congressional and former military leaders to be the next secretary of the Navy. Among White's vocal supporters are retired Gen. Hugh Shelton, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat whose district includes the newly renovated Intrepid museum which sits on an aircraft carrier in the Hudson River. Nadler says members of Obama's transition team have reached out to him about White. "They're clearly vetting him," he tells NEWSWEEK.

Another favorite caught in the Beltway chatter for the job is Juan Garcia, a former naval aviator who attended Harvard Law School with Obama and was chairman of his campaign in Texas.

Because the Navy secretary is a civilian job, White's appointment wouldn't directly conflict with the military ban on gays. But it would certainly bring new attention to the Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy as Obama gets ready to take office. Getting rid of that law--under which more than 12,000 members of the military have been discharged--was an Obama campaign promise, though the president-elect has since acknowledged its repeal might take some time. If nominated, White, 42, will likely face questions about his take on that policy, implemented by President Clinton in 1993.

Though he's never served in the military, backers say White has extensive contacts in the armed forces through his role with the Intrepid Museum and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a $100 million nonprofit set up to help military families and wounded vets. White also serves as a trustee of the Fisher House Foundation, which provides free housing at military and veterans hospitals for families who want to be near the recovery process. Reached by telephone, a spokeswoman for White said he would not be commenting, but has considered his work with the armed forces "truly the highest privilege."

"I certainly recommend him," Nadler says. "For the many years that I've known him, he's been an advocate for military personnel and their families, and for veterans." A source close to the talks says that incoming secretary of state Hillary Clinton has expressed support for White's nomination, although a spokesperson for Clinton (who remains a senator until she is confirmed next month) did not return calls for comment.

Supporters of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" have said that nominating White would send the wrong signal. "It's a matter of judgment, and I think that would be very poor judgment on the part of the commander in chief," Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, told The Washington Times, which first reported the White rumors. Meanwhile, in a statement released by the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay advocacy group, President Joe Solmonese said White's nomination would be a "concrete demostration" that the Obama administration sees "no place" for employment discrimination in government. "President-elect Obama has said both during his time in the Senate and on the campaign trail that overturning 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' was a priority for him, but he's also been straightforward and realistic that this is a measure that's going to require a great deal of strategy," Solmonese tells NEWSWEEK. "The consideration of this appointment certainly bodes well for keeping with Obama's commitment to address this issue."

The Obama transition team declined to comment.

Caroline Kennedy is an excellent choice for Senator from NY. She has no experience. That is good because our experienced Senators have screwed everything up. She has a family image to uphold so she is not going to sign onto any goofy crap. And NY is going to appoint a moonbat and Caroline is one of the most normal moonbats about. She never was very cute and has lost whatever looks she ever had. None of the Kennedy gals have ever been very attractive. And she never had a nice ass. But, none the less, being a Senator is not a very hard job and I am sure she can handle it. None of the other female Senators have nice asses either.

The moron-in-chief is going to hold a news conference to announce his plan to help Detroit.

It will be either filing for bankruptcy or ????.

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- President George W. Bush will speak early Friday about his administration's plan to avoid collapse of the U.S. auto industry.

Bush plans a statement at 9 a.m. EST at the White House.

The Bush administration has been weighing several approaches to assisting the automakers, including short-term loans. Administration officials said Thursday they were considering an "orderly" bankruptcy process for the troubled companies.

The Bush administration is convinced the ailing economy could not withstand the demise of Detroit's Big Three. A decision on how to help them is needed quickly as the carmakers suffer from their slowest sales in 26 years and dwindling operating cash."

The only reason why you talk the filth that you do is because you're a poor loser...got it A LOSER because we smoked your ass. Once and for all we buried you and now we own you ....

Johne and Greg - we have a major ice storm going right now - it's bad outside and it's heading east.. good luck!

Meanwhile, the vice bastard-in-chief is probably in his bunker planning his conquest of Russia. They do have lots of oil. We also need lebensraum (living room) just like Hitler was after. Today Siberia, tomorrow the world.

Obamamma,

That is a bad ass storm. Spokane had 19 inches of snow and parts of Idaho had two feet. Interstate 5 - the Grapevine - into Los Angeles was closed for 24 hours (unheard of). Some 10,000 homes in the northeast are still without power from the ice storm that his last week.

Take care. We will be thinking about you.

Good morning, all.

It's 53 degrees this morning and blowing 30 mile an hour winds. This follows an ice storm last night. It's supposed to be down to 10 by tomorrow night.
Talk about a roller coaster ride.

And oil is down to $34 a barrel. There apparently is no consistency left in the universe. It's going to be chaos or nothing from now on.

Good morning.
It's currently 16, but the weather service is promising that it will be 2 by 5pm and a low of -18 tonight. We're supposed to get 2 to 4 inches of snow today. Judging by the dog's tracks in the front yard, we got about an inch or and inch and a half last night.
Well, we got a couple days of above zero temperatures before below zero temperatures came back.

You always have the definitive argument, don't you? Me thinks you like the lady even though she doesn't have the required big ass.

That Kennedy magic still has a hold on even Far Right trolls. You do realize that Limbaugh will give your 40 lashes with a wet noodle for speaking even remotely nice about a Kennedy?

She will do better than anyone expects her to do...which is the whole point of being appointed instead of running. And everytime anybody in the MSM questions her qualifications or actions, it will cause a backlash that will help her even more. She has them where she wants them.

Now, the lovely and talented Sarah had only low expectations and performed even lower. That could be a big a problem for her when she tries to run against Jeb and Huckabee...if she isn't in the slammer by then for using Ted Stevens construction team to build their house for nothing.

I'm actually more intrigued by a Jeb vs. The Flipper matchup. The economy will still be Concern #1 even four years from now. Jeb has his brother as an albatross around his neck and Romney will have to explain why the car industry failed in his home state while defending Bush's voodoo economic bailout plan.

All and all it's going to be fun watching the GOP committing suicide - each blaming the other for the death of capitalism.

Gotta run. later.

You're think this is going to stay that way?

Your short term memory loss is beginning to worry the relatives. The Saudis and Chevez have made it abundantly clear that they expect the price to be around $70 or there will be hell to pay. I suppose you don't remember the OPEC oil embargo either...unless it's in reference to Carter?

You better make provisions now to get yourself hooked up with a decent nursing home. Don't let your nephews store you in a cheap place where the help use old conservatives geezers as a punching bag. Jail might be a better alternative. Turn yourself in for insider trading now.

Besides, I'm sure it's true.

One for the road...

At the same time, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said Congress should authorize the use of the second $350 billion from the financial rescue fund that it approved in October to rescue huge financial institutions. Tapping the fund for the auto industry basically exhausts the first half of the $700 billion total, he said....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/meltdown_autos

Congress shouldn't authorize even one more penny to this corrupt White House. Paulson hasn't told us where he gave away the rest of the first $350 billion...with no stipulations for paying it back.

I bet Bush didn't need a fraction of that money. He just wanted to back up his friends gambling debts with the multinationals who ended up holding their vowels. And where is the bank credit liquidity that was promised?

Under the heading of "What the hell are they doing to my Army?"
The Southern Poverty Law Center(SPLC) has an article on its site discussing the infiltration of the military by white supremacists. Not only are the lower recruiting standards allowing more of these scum into the military, but investigators are finding their investigations blocked by higher ranking commanders.
The really scary thing is that these neo-nazis and skinheads are going online and bragging about killing "browns" (Iraqis) and learning skills that they can use when they are discharged, like demolitions, sniping, etc., those kinds of skills.
http://www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=971
The SPLC CEO Richard Cohen has written a letter to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates asking him to adopt a zero tolerance policy with respect to extremists in the military. There's a link at the bottom of the SPLC article.
Cleaning up our military and bringing it back up to standards must be a priority for the Obama Defense Department.

Obamamma,
Just ignore the troll. It's a low-life scum bag. Sorry this web site allows trolls to continually attack Democratic WOMEN with disgusting names and hate speech. I'm sorry that this web site can not protect you from hateful and psycho trolls. It seems that your rights and well-being are not much of a concern, or the web site would've figured out a way to protect you, and other women, from these sickos. Try to ignore the troll. When I see troll screen names, I skip over them the same way I turn the station when I see a conservative nut-case. I know it's not easy... but it's much better than wasting your time and energy.

Also, I agree with you that Warren is the wrong person for the occasion. It re-enforces the notion that African-Americans are anti-gay, considering the polls from Prop 8. Warren has little moral/ethical high ground, so it lessens the oath and message. Warren goes against the message of change that we've worked to make reality. Imagine the had-core Democrats who will stand in the cold on 1/20. Don't you think most will be pro-choice, anti-discrimination, and pro-egalitarian? I think we will out-number Warren-types 20:1. I'm very disappointed that Warren will share the stage on this historic day.

Personally, I would lead by setting an example, and having a preacher who does preach discrimination and fundamentalist trash. After all, wouldn't you want to reach out to evangelicals by showing Americans and the world that all Christians leaders are not fundamentalist bigots? It's just not the message I would send to the Democratic base OR the World.

Some idiot was interviewing bush yesterday and bush was describing how he does not want to throw good money after bad in Detroit. What a moron.
156 Johne on December 19, 2008 at 8:27am.

Wall St... what abut Iraq. Talk about throwing good money after bad. That's the biggest money hole ever.

And talk about twisted thinking... we need to let more die there so we don't dishonor the ones who died there because of lies they told, and no exit strategy? Oh, the "compassion" is amazing.

Who knows the web sites that show donations to Presidential candidates? I forget.

I need to enter a business relationship with someone, and I want to make sure he/she is not a republican hack who gave to McSame, and doesn't support Democrats. I want to make sure that I'm not doing business with a money-grubbing jerk.
