Personally, I would lead by setting an example, and having a preacher who does preach discrimination and fundamentalist trash. After all, wouldn't you want to reach out to evangelicals by showing Americans and the world that all Christians leaders are not fundamentalist bigots? It's just not the message I would send to the Democratic base OR the World.

171Big_Yellow_Dog on December 19, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Yes - this is just what I was trying to explain. There are many others who could take center stage who define what we are as a party other then this creepy, fat, bearded ass who Obama has chosen. Like I said, I'm not alone with this thought. Most of the left talk radio and Keith agree.. bad choice for Obama (that's one mark against him).

I wish he would reconsider and change it. he still has time to do that. Also, the religious nut jobs on the other side don't want their l
"leader" taking stage with Obama.

It's a no win on both sides.
Bad idea.
Bad choice.

Thanks, Dobbie!

Good news from MN... Franken goes AHEAD! Party in MN! Party in Washington! Party everywhere! What did Coleman think would happen when he voted with that goofy Bush and evil Cheney? HELLO SENATOR FRANKEN! :-)

I think I figured out why so many are upset with Warren speaking on OUR day, on top of the reasons people listed. It's NOT because the transition team is reaching out to Republicans. It's because the transition team is reaching out to fundamentalist bigots! And those fundamentalist-types will never vote Democratic, support choice, or respect individual rights... unless it's your right to own a rocket launcher. Forget it. It's a waste of time.

We don't want to hear from anti-individual rights leaders on OUR day. Reaching out to Warren's self-help big-bigot flock is not "governing from the middle." It's governing from the Religious Right... and that's anything but change.

And it's not just "gay leaders" who are upset, as the MSM would have you believe. It's ALL pro-individual rights advocates, patriots for liberty, and egalitarian Democrats. I'm thinking this group is at leat 100 million strong... and counting.

Team Obama would do well to listen more to people who suggested Pastor Schuler. I only listen to Christian leaders who walk the talk.

The rule, which will cost more than $44 million to implement, gives more than 584,000 health-care organizations until Oct. 1 to provide written certification of their compliance. Those that do not comply face having their funding cut off or being required to return funding they have received.

Officials at hospitals and clinics predicted the regulation will cause widespread disruptions, forcing family planning centers and fertility clinics, for example, to hire employees even if they oppose abortions or in vitro fertilization procedures that can destroy embryos.

Obama realizes that interest rate cutting can only do so much. I think we need to consider write downs on the value of our properties using FHA for lower interest rates. This bail out needs to come down to the grass roots, and make a difference for working people who are the majority of the consumers.
A local banker told me of someone who built a new home where the construction cost ran $325 grand. When the assessor was done, the value of the house came in at $270 grand. Many things have been over inflated in these past years. Madoff - the $50 billion dollar pretend investment firm - an out right lie.
Deflation - (they can lower the food costs back down any time....the trucking fuel costs went down....)...this is something we need to face.

Franken Passes Coleman In Recount

On Thursday, the State Canvassing Board reviewed Coleman's challenges of hundreds of Election Day ballots, and the day's work saw the unofficial margin between the candidates dwindle to within a handful of votes.

As the board, headed by Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, took up and rejected more Coleman challenges today, Franken pulled ahead in the opening minutes.

...

Franken's move to the lead was no real surprise, given that the vast majority of ballot challenges typically fail. On the previous two days, when the board examined challenges from Franken, most were rejected and Coleman gained.

Franken Senate Victory Projected

Democratic challenger Al Franken finds himself on the cusp of winning a seat in the United States Senate after Minnesota's canvassing board awarded him a host of challenged votes during deliberations on Thursday.

As of 8PM ET, the Minneapolis Star Tribune projected that Franken would finish the recount process with a lead of 89 votes, positioning him to become the 59th senator caucusing with Democrats in the upcoming Congress.

Star-Tribune: Franken takes lead by more than 250 Hotlist
by SusanG
Fri Dec 19, 2008 at 11:14:36 AM PST

The drama continues:

The intense scrutiny of "voter intent" resumed this morning by the five-member board charged with directing Minnesota's recount in the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Norm Coleman and Democratic rival Al Franken, and the first 90 minutes of ballot rulings turned the challenger's slight deficit into a growing triple-digit lead.

There are some ongoing Coleman objections and maneuverings about matching duplicate ballots before counting them:

Also this morning, the State Canvassing Board sidestepped the Coleman team's proposal to prevent as many as 150 ballots from being counted twice. Talking about instances when a ballot couldn't be run through a voting machine, requiring a duplicate to be made, the Coleman camp said that such ballots should be counted only if an original could be matched with its copy.

WineRev's diary is brimming with updates, links, discussion and analysis.

Update: Sorry about that. In the first part of the first blockquote, I accidentally grabbed part of a comment at the Star-Tribune site. Fixed now. Susan.

Update by kos: Ha ha. Coleman's camp got cute and decided to challenge a second set of ballots. Franken's campaign responded in kind. Results? Coleman gained a vote, and Franken gained four. So their little gamble cost them three votes in the tally. And given how tight this thing is, that's not insignificant.

Bristol Palin's future mother-in-law was arrested on drug charges Thursday:

Levi Johnston's mother hit with drug charges

WASILLA -- A 42-year-old Wasilla woman was arrested Thursday at her home by Alaska State Troopers with a search warrant in an undercover drug investigation. Sherry L. Johnston was charged with six felony counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Johnston is the mother of Levi Johnston, the Wasilla 18-year-old who received international attention in September when Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, announced their teenage daughter was pregnant and he was the father. Bristol Palin, 18, is due on Saturday, according to a recent interview with the governor's father, Chuck Heath.

Troopers served the warrant at Johnston's home at the "conclusion of an undercover narcotics investigation," said a statement issued Thursday by the troopers as part of the normal daily summary of activity around the state.

Troopers charged Johnston with second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance -- generally manufacturing or delivering drugs -- as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.

Maybe one day the GOP will realize that neither the drug war nor their 'moral values' are actually getting them what they want.

Unless what they want is sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll -- Wasilla-style.

On Feb. 2, 2007, the United Nations scientific panel studying climate change declared that the evidence of a warming trend is "unequivocal," and that human activity has "very likely" been the driving force in that change over the last 50 years. The last report by the group, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in 2001, had found that humanity had "likely" played a role.

The addition of that single word "very" did more than reflect mounting scientific evidence that the release of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from smokestacks, tailpipes and burning forests has played a central role in raising the average surface temperature of the earth by more than 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1900. It also added new momentum to a debate that now seems centered less over whether humans are warming the planet, but instead over what to do about it. In recent months, business groups have banded together to make unprecedented calls for federal regulation of greenhouse gases. The subject had a red-carpet moment when former Vice President Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," was awarded an Oscar; and the Supreme Court made its first global warming-related decision, ruling 5 to 4 that the Environmental Protection Agency had not justified its position that it was not authorized to regulate carbon dioxide.

Bush gives $13.4 billion in loans to auto makers
Joe Sudbay (DC) · 12/19/2008 01:12:00 PM ET

It sucks that Bush still has any role in setting policy, but that's the way it is. This disaster, like so many others, did happen on his watch:

President Bush on Friday announced $13.4 billion in emergency loans to prevent the collapse of General Motors and Chrysler, and another $4 billion available for the hobbled automakers in February with the entire bailout conditioned on the companies undertaking sweeping reorganizations to show that they can return to profitability.

The loans, as G.M. and Chrysler teeter on the brink of insolvency, essentially throws the companies a lifeline from the taxpayers that will keep them afloat until March 31. At that point, the Obama administration will determine if the automakers are meeting the conditions of the loans and will continue to receive government aid or must repay the loans and face bankruptcy proceedings.

Mr. Bush made his announcement a week after Senate Republicans blocked legislation to aid the automakers that had been negotiated by the White House and Congressional Democrats, and the loan package announced by the president includes roughly the identical requirements in that bill, which had been approved by the House.

Mr. Bush, in a televised speech before the opening of the markets, said that under other circumstances he would have let the companies fail, as punishment for bad business decisions. But given the economic downturn, he said the government had no choice but to step in.

“These are not ordinary circumstances. In the midst of a financial crisis and a recession, allowing the U.S. auto industry to collapse is not a responsible course of action” Mr. Bush said.

Like George Bush knows anything about "a responsible course of action."

Greenback crumbling since Fed rate cut
Chris in Paris · 12/18/2008 10:15:00 PM ET · Link

Thanks to Bernanke's rate cut, Wall Street loves him but outside of that bonus rich area, the news is not very positive unless somehow the US stops buying goods from overseas. Oil prices seem to be OK so far but a currency problem could move the prices up again. Only days ago the dollar to euro rate was down around 1.25 and suddenly it jumped back to 1.45.

The dollar tumbled on Wednesday, hitting its lowest in more than 13 years versus the yen and also falling against the euro, one day after the Federal Reserve's historic rate cut.

As you likely know, the Fed on Tuesday cut its federal funds rate target to a record low, setting a range of zero to 0.25 percent compared with the previous level of 1.0 percent, and said it would use "all available tools" to battle recession.

The massive cut further diminished the greenback's yield appeal against the euro, which has registered a staggering 11 percent gain so far during the month.

"The underlying story in the FX market remains yield. The fact that the Fed made this major policy move yesterday really changed the balance of power towards the euro for the time being," says Boris Schlossberg, director of currency research at GFT Forex.

All of this so Wall Street can get a helping hand which of course, doesn't trickle down to Main Street. Brilliant.

On Housing

The Obama team has sent its email on housing. There will be area discussions on the issue. I hope there is interest in one more local than 150 miles away. Write downs of values and refinancing at lower FHA rates are on my mind to help stave off foreclosures.
Another big piece of the reality is people living within their means - something our culture totally lost sight of under the past rule of the GOP.

On Climate

It's hard to argue with events. 11 inches of snow today - much like the past winter. As part of the infrastructural rebuilding we may want to start on some arks for the low lying regions - if spring follows last year's moisture patterns in the Midwest. Warmer ocean and air temperatures are the basis for more moisture being carried in the air and then dumped on us in larger amounts than in our recent past.

A Comparison

The personal digs on this blog - I do not care for. Yet, compared to the conversations on Haaretz News, Israel, this is more like a nice Sunday ice cream social.

cnn says the minnesota newspaper of record is saying franken will win the senate seat by 89 votes...i wouldn't take this to the bank yet but it does indicate that things are very fluid and that so may be the eyes of repelicans...
132
gregg on December 18, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Well that is bunk. And the newspaper of record is not saying that. The 89 votes is based on readers evaluating the contested votes on line. Then when they are done voting and they haven't gotten to all of them (as few would) the paper projects how they voted unto the ones they didn't vote to determine how they would have voted if they had. It only proves that Democrats have more time to mess with that than Republicans do.

The fact is that not much has changed and Coleman will win by about what was reported on election night.

Fromm,

I always wonder though when conservatives claim that because it snowed today that somehow refutes global warming. That's like saying, "I'm in a plain in Kansas, so clearly the earth is flat."

The data and trends are unmistakeable. And here is a very simple example of data trends that anyone can do using nothing but their own local paper (which is different everywhere, but the consistency is remarkable all over the world):

At the start of each month, most local papers will print a list of record highs and record lows for each date. If not, then they print it every individual day for the month. Along with that, they will print the year in which it happened.

No matter where you are, or what month it is, if you count the number of days on which the record high in your town was recorded in a more recent year than the record low for the date, vs. the reverse you will find that in a typical 30 day month, on at least 20 (or more typically about 24 or so) days the record high for that date occurred more recently than the record low.

Well ya dope, that is because the temperatures are taken in cities (where the newspapers are) and as the population of cities increase so do the number of paved roads and buildings all of which absorb and retain heat. If you have a thermometer that has recorded temperatures in a rural area for a hundred years you would see no trend at all.

You're right, the confusion is between weather and climate. Yes, it may be snowing, but that does not erase the overall change in climate. It reminds me of the republican congresswoman Chenoweth who argued that Salmon could not possibly be endangered because she was able to purchase canned salmon in the grocery store.

If only they believed in technology so that they could hear their words spoken back to them...

Aw, trollie has his dirty shorts in a knot. He was dancing with joy a few weeks ago when the first phase of the recount was completed and screaming "Coleman WON! It's over!" I kept pointing out that ONLY Phase One was completed, and linked to the SoS web page.

And then for several days the fool was reposting the same wingnut drivel/post (which he got WRONG when he posted it the first time, by using the SoS 11-4 numbers rather than the actual daily totals) and DEMANDING an apology from me for linking to the Secretary of State web site.

All because he couldn't read a simple 4 line chart.

Fool.

It AIN'T over by a long shot, and regardless of who wins the margin of victory will be ONE VOTE. Period.

The rest will just be gravy.

DPD,

Do they have photos in that Palin calendar of anyone being put into handcuffs?

So the fiance's mother is a drug dealer and Palin never suspected? Well, she didn't know her daughter was pregnant either till McCain pointed it out. This ninny is dumber than most Republican doorknobs.

I hope Levi isn't involved in the family business. I wouldn't want Palin's grandson to have to visit his father in jail in Siberia or wherever else the lovely GOP Sarah privatizes out inmates these days.

This GOP soap opera just gets better the more we learn about that Peyton Place of the North. I wondered why there hadn't been an wedding. The mother-of-the-groom couldn't get a dress made up in black and white stripes or a bright orange material?

With Auto workers forced into foreign worker pay rolls does Mercedes Benz and BMW pay higher to their American worker. Where are the stats in the paper in what each worker makes?

In all this where are the wage concessions of the CEO's and their Tory supporters?

Also compared to what they make, also compare the price to live in their neighborhoods and the taxes paid.

You will find up north, they pay for education, while in some areas manufacturers get tax breaks.

Thank you for your response, BYD. I can understand your viewpoint about Pastor Warren. Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman last night (18DEC08), on their respective shows on MSNBC, http://www.rachel.msnbc.com , did a good job at espousing the opinion of those who believe, like you, that Pastor Warren was not the best choice to deliver inauguration invocation on 20JAN09. I do not share all of Pastor Warren's views, either.

But to automatically disqualify him for his opinion(s) is no better than qualifying someone based merely on their opinion(s). Pastor Warren, and those that follow him, had every right to advocate for CA Prop 8 as much as all the groups that advocated against CA Prop 8. That is our political process. And once again, in accordance with CA law, the will of the people is served. You and I may not agree with the majority decision but, elections have consequences.

Pastor Warren represents the views of tens of millions of Americans if not hundreds of millions when it comes to his religious convictions about gay marriage and other political hot button issues such as abortion. President-elect Obama will be the POTUS to all 300 million of us, not just the LGBT community and their supporters. Furthermore, the President-elect stated throughout his entire campaign that he was opposed to gay marriage but in favor of civil unions. The LGBT's knew this. What was their alternative, vote for Sen. McCain (R-AZ) or some third-party hack that didn't stand a snowball's chance in Hades of getting elected? The LGBT community will have a seat at the proverbial table in 2009. It will not be a front row seat though due to political considerations.

Once again, we are a nation of law, not men. The rule of law must be followed otherwise we live in a state of anarchy. Every single right we have, or do not have, is by the will of the people through their elected officials. There are consitutional mechanisms in place to amend the constitution or repeal any amendment and I'm quite confident I don't have to explain that process to you. If the votes were there, any Amendment could be gone by the end of 2009. Want to ban guns? Repeal the 2nd Amendment. Want to make alcohol illegal again? Repeal the 21st Amendment. Want to ban term limits on the POTUS and VPOTUS? Repeal the 22nd Amendment. And if you want to secure gay marriage for the LGBT community, then it is time for the "28th Amendment". The trick will be finding the votes for such.

And as of this time in history, the votes are not there. IMO, the votes will not be there until the baby boomers have died off. Polling of CA voters indicated that those under 35 voted two to one against CA Prop 8. That will be the generation that brings gay marriage into existence, not us.

In VA, when we amended our constitution back in 2004, the gay marriage ban passed by a margin of two to one. The thirty-plus states that have passed similar amendments saw those pass by a similar margin.

The LGBT Community often asks, "How would gay people marrying affect heterosexual marriage"? The correct answer is, "It wouldn't". But the majority of Americans (60%+) disagree with that notion. Therefore, the question needs to be changed to, "If the LGBT community has the same rights as marriage but it is called a CU, why should that affect their 'marriage'"?

In closing, if the LGBT Community wants the same rights as married couples, the only viable alternative at this point in history is Civil Unions (CU's). Polling indicates that CU's enjoy significantly more support than gay marriage does. Is that seperate but equal? Yes, it is. Does that suck? Yes, it does as much as it did when the same standard was applied to African-Americans. Is that the best we can do now under the rule of law. Yes, it is because if it won't pass in, arguably, the most liberal state in the union, it darn sure won't pass anywhere else.

BobVADemocratHawk on December 19, 2008 at 05:44 PM

let's try and explain this all to the troll again. BTW, how much has Minneapolis grown in size and population in the last years? My guess is nada !

Top Five Cities Experiencing Winter Warming Trends

NOTE WHO #1 IS !!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 Minneapolis/ St. Paul, Minnesota

Annual Trend Temperature: 0.2°F

Over 30 Years: 6.4°F

It’s not Minnesota summers that bring in the tourists. Winters are the bread-and-butter for the state.

Warmer winters are bad news for the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The cities host winter

http://www.weatherbill.com/static/content/temperature_trends_summary_2007-09.pdf

We are now observing real changes due to higher temperatures. Here are some examples:

The Mt. Kilimanjaro glacier, which has survived the past 11,000 years, is currently at risk of disappearing by 2020 if present rates of melting continue;

Enormous tracts of Siberian peatlands, with vast stores of carbon, are beginning to thaw and release carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere;

The Larsen B ice shelf in Antarctica has lost volume as large chunks (some as large as the state of Rhode Island) have recently broken free and melted;

The annual surface area of Arctic sea ice has declined eight percent over the past several decades;

Large-scale increases in ocean temperatures have been detected over the past 45 years; and
Plants and animals are changing their habitation ranges, sometimes dramatically, such as robins and mosquitoes in the Arctic that were previously unknown there.

Antarctic ice core records vividly illustrate that atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels today are higher than levels recorded over the past 650,000 years (see figure below). Atmospheric CO2 levels have risen 30 percent in the last 150 years, with half of that rise occurring only in the last three decades. It is a well-established scientific fact that CO2 (and other gases emitted from industrial and agricultural sources) traps heat in the atmosphere, so it is no surprise that we are now witnessing a dramatic increase in temperature.

The total number of Born again evangelicals is smaller than the population of gays if we use that "10%" stab in the dark.

The fact of the matter is that that tub of lard is using his small screecher base to deny already conferred rights on a larger segment of Society than he represents.

Bush has nailed to coffin box closed to the American labor unions, may they rest in pieces. America has been Incorporated into a Conglomerate Republic of Chinese like rule where a political religion is run from the White House with its Patriot Act that demands compliance.

"We the people" have been overcome, America has been redefined to where we have Chinese Freedom and Democracy of a crushed Lady Liberty that represented Civil Liberties. The Premier Power Brokers and their think tanks have conquered America without a shop being heard around the world.

When America needs the music, the Music City comes up like that lump of coal, but what they do not realize America is so much more than President Elect Obama for is only a piece for "We the people" reclaiming our Heritage and History to give our children dreams of futures for the American political system is like a Mafia of greed and corruption that needs fumigated. It stink in Washington of Katrina mold and those pictures just a guilty as child molesters of Abu Grhaib pictures where a man was posed as if he was crucified in an American Inquisition.

Yes, we need our music back from this insanity of Patriot Act Scales of Justice.

But like Christian Churches that lost their real Liberal God of Love, Nashville has become a Katrina model of flooding silence. You would think that they would never become a Dead Poets Society to become the Dead Musicians Society, and the Dead Songwriters Society of the American conscience. Bob,

Do you think the wording of the Equal Rights Amendment had anything to do with why it was so badly beaten up? I didn't realize it at the time, but it does provide LGBT a life line, doesn't it.

But the Far Right did know it and began working under the radar back then arguing that passage would force women into combat or use the same bathrooms as men as an excuse to kill it. They obviously never cared about either. Bush's blunder in Iraq made both possibilities a very necessary reality.

So who is the Far Right really worried about here...gays or women...or both? All this talk about marriage. Is it the new wedge issue or excuse for denying all but rich white males power to control their future?

I smell fear and I'm thinking it's economic...as usual. If the GOP can divide women, middle class males, and gays while discriminating against them all, then they have the upper hand. Gay marriage is a red herring. It really makes no common sense that gays marrying gays threatens hetro marriages.

So this is all about control and always has been. But with the number of single, divorced, and widowed women increasing and economic conditions deteriorating, I'm not sure we will have to wait too long for all women to catch onto what the Republicans are doing...this is the largest and fastest growing voter block.

And, imho, it's not the Baby Boomer generation that is holding up action on stopping sexism, it's the Rat Pack generation. Younger generations and older women are going to be pushing even harder for change in the decade to come. You betcha.

A small taste of freedom can ignite a very lethal weapon.

And I do not believe Baby Boomers who elected a black president are going to let the gay community be used as a punching bag any more than we are going to let the Old White Rich Geezer Boys Club to continue running the show.

Change was always closer at hand then Rove or Obama ever realized. All we had to do is embrace it...just once.
