December: 500k Jobs Lost, Unemployment Reaches 7.2%

Posted by Matt Ortega on January 9, 2009 at 11:45 AM

In figures released in the December jobs report by the Labor Department, more than a half million jobs were lost and unemployment spiked to 7.2 percent.

The U.S. economy lost 524,000 jobs in December, closing out the worst year for job losses since World War II, the Labor Department said Friday.

Nearly 2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008, with 1.9 million destroyed in just the past four months, according to a survey of work places. It's the biggest job loss in any calendar year since 1945, when 2.75 million jobs were lost as the wartime economy was demobilized.

The 1.5 million jobs lost in the fourth quarter were the most in any three-month period since 1945.
As a percentage of employment, job losses in 2008 totaled 1.8%, the worst since 1982 and the third largest since the war.

The numbers were released as Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-California) began her Senate confirmation hearings as the next Secretary of Labor for President-elect Barack Obama's incoming administration.

President-elect Barack Obama's pick to become the top U.S. labor official said on Friday her priorities would be to boost job training and search assistance to fight a deepening U.S. recession.

Democratic Rep. Hilda Solis, tapped by Obama to become labor secretary, also told her Senate confirmation hearing she would fight job discrimination and ensure employees "get the pay they have earned working in safe, healthy and fair workplaces."

Bush doesn't seem to care, he is so happy. The people's groans of suffering, those that lost jobs and can't afford to buy enough food? The suffering because of the Iraqi war? The lost billions that was given to the wealthy corporations and the wealthy, no bid, contractors?
The no jobs created by the wealthy corporations and wealthy contractors, even though they received Billions to create jobs, so called? My God look at the suffering caused by the billions given to the Iraqi Government. Now we are paying the price for the wealthy Bush's actions. They have gained and haven't suffered one bit? Look how fit and wealthy they look? They seem to be glad for every move Bush did to bring us to the mess we are in now.

I wonder what the REAL figures are. Bush instructed his minions from the very start to juggle the books to make himself look good. If 7.2 is the best they can give him as he leaves office, you know that this is a bogus number.

Did you see the several hundred billion dollar ship named George H.W. Bush? How proud the Bushes were to spend the money to build it for daddy so he could be honored? How many presidents do we build an Airplane, ship, or an Army tank for? Only the Republicans, while they are in office. They bankrupt our nation on toys like this. Then when the Democrats get in they have to conserve and fix the messes the Republican Administrations get us into. How many times? Can you name the times the Democrats have bailed out the economy after a long run of Republicans? Name it and write to us. We are ready to protest and spend like the Republicans do.

Yes , I understand your woe’s. I feel the same way but I look at it much differently. I don’t see it as the Bush president verse the Democrat president, or Republican vs. Democrat. I see it as the American Citizen vs. the Federals. We as capitalist continue to fight amongst ourselves. Management vs. Labor, and on and on. The fact is the UAW and the Teamsters are tax payers just like management. We are all producers. On the other side the Federals i.e. those who work for the federal government ( to my knowledge happens to be the biggest employer) produce nothing. Looking at the United States as a Giant Corporation they would be classified as staff personal. Which when times are bad would be the first ones to go. Yet, I have not heard of one Federal government employee lose his job, take a pay cut, or make any sacrifice.

Lets see I’m losing my house and all Ive worked for and the Federal get:

A good paycheck
Which automatically adjusted for the cost of living
Benefits
Which include: Medical, Dental, Child care, A gym at work for working out, All holidays off, health insurance for there pets, and much more.
You can’t fire them

Go in the parking lot of a federal building and look at all the new cars.

I’ve never got anything like this as a private citizen. Have you?

Here are the facts, publicly available:

Unemployment averaged about 6% under Nixon (1974), 7.8% under Ford (1976), 7.2% under Carter (1980), 5.3% under Reagan (1988), 7.4% under Bush I(1992), 3.9% under Clinton (2000), and 7.2% under Bush II (2008).

Mr. Ortega says, "The U.S. economy lost 524,000 jobs in December, closing out the worst year for job losses since World War II, the Labor Department said Friday.

"Nearly 2.6 million jobs were lost in 2008, with 1.9 million destroyed in just the past four months, according to a survey of work places. It's the biggest job loss in any calendar year since 1945, when 2.75 million jobs were lost as the wartime economy was demobilized.

My question to Mr. Ortega is: "Relative to what?"
Simple 10 minute research reveals that unemployment peaked at 10.8% in 1982 (since WWII), then plummeted to 5.3% in 1988, the lowest in 30 years, due to Reagan’s TAX CUTS for everybody, especially, the “wealthy” who are the ones that actually create jobs.

So what's wrong with Mr. Ortega's statement? A single grain of truth clothed in deliberately misleading "statistics" with no point of reference results in an outright LIE.
