CHICAGO (MSNBC)- The Illinois Supreme Court said Friday that Secretary of State Jesse White's signature isn't required to validate Roland Burris' appointment to the U.S. Senate, lobbing the question of seating him back to Democratic leaders in Washington.

"No further action is required by the Secretary of State or any other official to make the Governor's appointment of Roland Burris to the United States Senate valid under Illinois law," Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier wrote for the court in its unanimous decision.

Burris was turned away from the Senate this week in part because his appointment by Gov. Rod Blagojevich lacks White's signature...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28581098/

Then that's it. Senator-designate Burris should be seated ASAP. We are still a nation of law, not men. And while this will be a tainted appointment and Senator Burris will probably get his butt kicked in 2010, the law is still the law. Senator Roland Burris the junior senator from IL; get used to it.

Good afternoon, all.

Can't believe I was doing yard work all afternoon...in the middle of January.

* * *

Oh my goodness, what a novel approach, actually polling the public to see what the majority wants and the most effective means in communicating policy to the sheeple. "We the people" may actually hold some real meaning in the Obama Adminstration.

BobVADemocratHawk on January 9, 2009 at 05:25 PM

Hi, Bob.

I question giving those who overwhelmingly voted for Bush twice a voice in shaping any legislation. How about just sticking with the agenda that won Obama the presidency? Those who are being swayed by fears and worries are often not thinking straight.

I see the value of seeing where public opinion is trending at any given time, but we both know it often changes faster than it can often be polled. Outside input is important in making policy, but it should come from various sources not just polls.

imho, keeping goals and objectives clear yields real results in the long run...that is if you have the right ones to begin with.

That is a very valid point, Sandy. None the less, I think you'd agree with me that the Bush policy of "shoot first ask questions later" has been a complete disaster whether it was applied to foreign or domestic policy. Input from all sectors is defintely warranted. But take solace in this. It's our guy in the Oval Office this time, not the "short bus" crowd.

DPD,

Conservatives are always "casually" re-fashioning reality to fit their arguments (ie., George Will and Brit Hume saying that FDR caused the Great Depression). What do they have against historic facts and scientific measurements? They can't deal with the truth or are they intellectually dishonest with even themselves?

Or are they are just dishonest, corrupt opportunists?

So what you're saying here Sandy is that when an election is won by one political party then, according to your logic, members of the opposing political party should have no say in their government during the term of the winning parties presidency.

My, what a novel idea! Of course you would only feel this s a great idea if a democrat is in office as you would howl like a scalded cat if the inverse was the case and the democrats had lost the election and thereby all rights to have any say in their government.

Following your brilliant logic then would you also then back a plan to not tax any members or supporters of the Republican party since taxation without representation was one of the basic reasons we fought the Revolutionary War against the British and you sure wouldn't want to deviate away from one of the basic tenants of our US Constitution.

Of course, once you absolve the Republicans of their tax burden you might have a bit of a mess on your hands since almost all taxes in this country are paid by "wealthy" white Republicans; so The One's treasury will have a rather hollow, echoing sound to it when they drop the meager tax contributions of YOUR side into the vault.

Of course you thought all that through and still believe that the crap that leaks out of your foolish brain and out of your mouth makes good sense. Why yes, it does because most of the asshats on here think like you do...

... with their asses.

Hi, marymac.

So they are saying that Bush "saved our lives" so he could spy on us, imprison us without any recourse, ship our jobs overseas and force us into underemployment, destroy our savings, dismantle all our social safety nets like Social Security and Unemployment Insurance, and torture anybody he feels might threaten "them"?

The Others sure were/are altruistic.

Wow, Sandy, you must really have an "effed" up life. I can't recall ever being spied on by, imprisoned by, losing my job because of, being tortured by and anything else you listed being done by my government.

If this has happened to you or any member of you family then I feel sorry for you for how you live you life and you have you family reunions in the party room of your state prison.

Bake lots of cakes... with files in them. Oh yes, give condoms as presents. I understand that in prison it's the gift that just keeps giving.

So what you're saying here Sandy is that when an election is won by one political party then, according to your logic, members of the opposing political party should have no say in their government during the term of the winning parties presidency....

Nope. What I'm saying is...can anybody trust the judgment of someone who voted for Bush twice?

These individuals have a right to their opinion, but on must look closely at the source to determine if their opinions are rational enough to take into consideration. Considering where this nation is today after eight years of blunders, scandals and deficits, I'd say they were all on drugs or were possessed by the devil.

If you don't want to pay taxes, then you can live on the Lost island with Benjamin Linus and the rest of The Others. In civilized societies in where inhabitants live closely together, people must share their resources for the Common Good. If you want to live like a heathen, get Lost.

I didn't say that I didn't want to pay taxes. I just pointed out the fallacy of your foolish comment "I question giving those who overwhelmingly voted for Bush twice a voice in shaping any legislation." What you just said is you wish to deny anyone who voted for President George W. Bush the right to vote (that's how American citizens have a hand in shaping legislation).

Therefore, if you desire to disenfranchise half of all American voters, and it was half in 2000 and 2004, then you certainly don't expect us to pay taxes without representation.

You see Sandy, you are a fool and when you speak foolishness is what you say.

Care to retract your foolish comment?

Your opinion as opposed to those who are actually serious about issues isn't worth the time of day. Another reason why polls are not reliable. There are too many people playing games with them.

evening Fine Dems......

Just loggin out, and wanted to post a Happy New Year message to anyone I missed before:

Happy New Year greetings ...

As I reflect on 2008, I can say we had a great year:

Blacks are happy; Obama was elected.

Whites are happy, OJ is in jail.

Democrats are happy; George Bush is leaving office.

Republicans are happy: Democrats will finally quit saying George Bush stole the 2000 election.

And all of us are happy; The election is finally over!

2009 should be even better: Immediately after his inauguration, Obama will balance the budget, revive the economy, solve the real estate problem, solve the auto industry problem, solve our gas/alternative energy problem, stop the fires and mudslides in California, ban hurricanes and tornadoes, stop identity theft, reverse global warming, solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, get rid of corruption in government and achieve world peace. Then on the 7th day, He will rest.

Best Wishes for 2009 to you and yours.

He truly is The One! :)

Love the man!

How to Restore America's Position as a Leader on Reproductive Rights
Thursday 08 January 2009
by: Nancy Northup, RH Reality Check

With the election of Barack Obama, women around the world can heave a collective sigh of relief and look forward to an end to the Bush administration's relentless assault on women's reproductive health and rights. It's been a very long and destructive eight years. While the rest of the world has been moving forward in a growing recognition of reproductive rights as human rights, the United States has moved backwards.

In the past two years, the United States Supreme Court - with two new Bush justices - issued Gonzales v. Carhart , a decision that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg called "alarming," which she said represented antiquated and rejected notions of a woman's place in the family. At the same time, the Constitutional Court in Colombia said that protecting reproductive rights is a direct path to promoting the dignity of all human beings.

We need to get back on that direct path. Under the leadership of President-elect Obama, the United States has the opportunity to again take the world stage as a leader in promoting women's reproductive health, equality and human rights.

Make no mistake, our country's new vision for reproductive rights and health needs to go further than simply undoing the policies of the previous administration. The Obama administration must work toward a nation and world in which all women are free to decide whether and when to have children, where all women have access to quality reproductive health care, where all women can exercise their choices without coercion or discrimination, and where all women can participate with full dignity as equal members of society.

President-elect Obama is a strong supporter of reproductive rights and understands the values that underscore them - human dignity, self-determination, equality and non-discrimination. These principles are embodied in the United States Constitution, one of the world's earliest human rights documents, as well as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He also understands, however, that the mere recognition of rights is not enough: they must improve the lives and health of women.

Why would I do that? I don't know President George W. Bush or his lovely wife Laura personally and I can't imagine they would consult with me for my decorating tastes. Besides, it's Texas they are moving to, not Paraguay or any other South American country. That's just kooky talk. Johne, gregg, DoPeyD and of course Pammy all share this eccentric kooky talk manner of thought. It's that "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder" syndrome that Michael Savage is always discussing on his highly rated conservative radio talk show.

Do you ever listen to his program? You really should as it might give you some insight into these strange thoughts you are having.

mary,

The Pope's latest edict says that women are destroying the environment using birth control pills. The conservative, authoritarian sexist reasoning blames women for the rise of male autism and the lowering of male self-esteem that leads to the necessity for Viagra (to only procreate, of course).

If these sexist jerks would respect women (or even each other), they'd understand the importance of not overpopulating an already fragile planet and start using birth control themselves.

But that would be giving up control over those Eve-inspired Jezebels who cannot be trusted to make decisions for themselves....as if men have done such a great job running the world since leaving Eden?

Sensible public health policy depends on separating religious intolerance from individual medical decisions. We must address AIDS as an illness not as a sin.

PamB

Pammy, your statement reveals your inner racism. You think all it takes for Blacks to be happy is having a 50/50 president? He is 50/50 you know, 1/2 Black = 1/2 White but of course everyone seems not to want to recognize that as FACT! And if they are so happy Pammy, why hasn't the Black on Black crime rated dropped off dramatically after November 4th? Hmmm? And all the other "bad habits" they seem to have adopted as their own?

democrats may be happy now but soon they will realize that all those promises The One made are empty and impossible for him to fulfill?

Whites could really give a crap about OJ. He's an idiot criminal, his own worse enemy and is now gone forever except for an occasional news item about his last birthday and the news on his dying behind bars. But he did like White women and was kind of rough on them so maybe you should say White women are happy OJ is in jail. Or at least their fathers are.

And yes Pammy, Republicans are happy because from now on YOU asshats own The One and all that will come to him and from him.

Oh BTW, I caught that statement of yours wanting to slap President George W. Bush. Now aren't you just the classy old broad? I wonder something... do you think that perhaps Matt might want to pull that off this site? Might be advisable considering threatening the President of the United States is a crime.

U.S. seeks ship to move arms to Israel

09 Jan 2009
Source: Reuters
By Stefano Ambrogi

LONDON, Jan 9 (Reuters) - The U.S. is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tonnes of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show.

The U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) said the ship was to carry 325 standard 20-foot containers of what is listed as "ammunition" on two separate journeys from the Greek port of Astakos to the Israeli port of Ashdod in mid-to-late January.

A "hazardous material" designation on the manifest mentions explosive substances and detonators, but no other details were given.

"Shipping 3,000-odd tonnes of ammunition in one go is a lot," one broker said, on condition of anonymity.

"This (kind of request) is pretty rare and we haven't seen much of it quoted in the market over the years," he added.

The U.S. Defense Department, contacted by Reuters on Friday in Washington, had no immediate comment.

The MSC transports armour and military supplies for the U.S. armed forces aboard its own fleet, but regularly hires merchant ships if logistics so require...

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L9736369.htm

Why doesn't the White House just send a personal press release to the Somalia pirates informing them what and where to look for their next ransom target? Who are the military geniuses who thought up privatization of arms shipments?

Who are the idiots who thought up governmental privatization of anything?

49
SandyH on January 9, 2009 at 10:19 PM

I am not real happy with some Senate Democrats right now. What a bunch of idiots. And it saddens me to say, that includes you, Senator Durbin. What most Americans want is for Obama's agenda to move forward. That means the Democrats will need every seat/vote they can get in the Senate. Seat Burris and Frankin. Push it. You have the majority, start acting like it.

50
Chicago on January 9, 2009 at 10:26 PM

I can come up with NO valid reason NOT to seat Burris save one: the fear that seating him will make other Democrats look bad and they might not get re-elected. Any Senator who is making decisions based on a fear of not being re-elected should probably not be re-elected. Grow a pair you wimps. You're in the majority now. Start acting like it. We put you there to do a job. You better start doing it or we'll find someone who will.

59SandyH on January 9, 2009 at 10:40 PM

Sandy,
One of the things that worries me is the precedent being set for Senate appointments. Jesse White (IL Secretary of State) refuses to sign Blago's appointment. So now, the Gov. no longer has the authority to appoint Senators. If there is a republican Secretary of State, they can simply refuse to sign the appointment or at least hold it up for a long time. Suddenly, Senate appiointments only work if both the Gov. and Sec. of State are of the same party.
That's folly. SEAT THE MAN! Come on Durbin and Reid, let's get the agenda ready to move.

It's time to MoveOn in more ways than one?

Johne,

I'm not sure if it was Raygun or those members of the Bush Crime Family who were moving his mouth and pulling the strings behind the scenes.

I'm pretty sure Poppy was the real mastermind...he wasn't head of the CIA for nothing (the similarities with Putin are just chilling, aren't they?) He's gotten away with a lot more than Cheney in many respects. And I haven't heard one historian speculate about it in public. Why is that I wonder?

I can't believe Nancy allowed them to manipulate a sick man that way. What some women won't do to hold onto their social status and power.

Look at Laura Bush. Now there's is a real desperate woman. She stuck with that idiot all these years when he was a skunk from the start of their marriage and then turned into what he is today...a complete failure of a joke.

You forget what it was like before the feminist movement. Some women of that age still aren't confident enough of their own abilities to have any self-esteem. Well, she married him and went along with the mass murder and torture. It's her shame, too, imho.

I guess it's all about PR. They are afraid of having the taint of any corruption on them like you said...for re-election. Hey, nobody expects them to be angels when there isn't any strong campaign finance laws in place. Maybe that should be the next step?

All states have problems. I'm sick of this boiling over into Washington where we face some big problems. Burris will only be there two years and he's a Democrat and will vote that way. What's the big deal.

I'm turning in for the night. Want to read.

The Minnesota State Canvassing Board on Monday certified the results of the recount of Republican Sen. Norm Coleman's fight to retain his seat against Franken. The results showed Franken with a 225-vote lead.

Loving Harry Reid's quote regarding the passage of that resolution in support of Israel.

"Our resolution reflects the will of the state of Israel and the will of the American people."

Last time I was this disgusted was when the stories of the current administration's dirty secrets started slipping out. As soon as I can get the forms, I think I'm removing myself from being affiliated with the DNC. Who knows, maybe in the next election cycle we can have some humanity move into the Congress.

we should listen to Michael Savage now, according to MN Thomass ! Yeah, and I am getting stronger AM reception, so I can bring in Limbaugh clearer too. Their ignorance should be heard loud and clear.

David Gilson wrote in a Salon article published March 3, 2003,[3] that using his talk-show as a vehicle, Savage had

launched a one-man mission to save America from its enemies at home and abroad, which on any given day includes liberals, gays, academics, the homeless, the Clintons, immigrants, feminists, CNN, the American Civil Liberties Union, Muslims and other minorities. Broadcasting three hours a day, five afternoons a week, from a studio inside his home in the affluent San Francisco suburb of Larkspur, he gives voice to the right wing's darkest fantasies.
On May 18, 2004 a website that Savage had sued and lost, michaelsavagesucks.com, wrote an open letter to Savage, challenging his claims of radio popularity: "Michael, let us verify your 350 stations and Arbitron data proving you have 10.5 million listeners, and we will shut down this website." They never received a reply.

Despite poor ratings, MSNBC kept the Savage Nation on until Saturday, July 5, 2003, when MSNBC broadcast its last Savage Nation show. On it Savage took a call from a prankster who claimed he was gay, to which Savage responded in part:

"Oh, you're one of the sodomites. You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage? You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it. Get trichinosis. Okay, do we have another nice caller here who's busy because he didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse, who's angry at me today? Get another one. Put another sodomite on."

Yeah, we should ALL listen to Michael Savage---and then go in and puke our guts out from his filth! Appears he has 1 listener, anyways! and he is from St. Paul, MN ! No wonder he is so screwed up !

How to Restore America's Position as a Leader on Reproductive Rights

by: Nancy Northup, RH Reality Check

With the election of Barack Obama, women around the world can heave a collective sigh of relief and look forward to an end to the Bush administration's relentless assault on women's reproductive health and rights. It's been a very long and destructive eight years. While the rest of the world has been moving forward in a growing recognition of reproductive rights as human rights, the United States has moved backwards.

Conservative Bloggers Up In Arms Over GOP Cooperation With Obama

Congressional Republicans may have forged a fragile peace with President-elect Obama as he pushes his stimulus plan. But they face an insurgency on their right flank.

"You can sense a lot of frustration -- from listening to Rush Limbaugh to reading at RedState -- with Republican members of Congress being ready to fall all over themselves to help him," says Erick Erickson, editor of the conservative blog RedState.

Palin: Katie Couric, Tina Fey Have Been "Exploiting" Me

ALBANY, N.Y. — She messed up her first interviews, didn't show much of a grasp of the issues and, dontcha know, had a speech pattern that was widely mimicked. Sarah Palin? You betcha. But Caroline Kennedy also fits the bill. The difference is that while the conservative Republican Palin was ridiculed in the press and on "Saturday Night Live" in her quest to be vice president, the liberal Democratic Kennedy, after early criticism in the media, remains the perceived favorite in her bid for a Senate seat from New York.

NYTimes:
"House Passes 2 Measures on Job Bias

By ROBERT PEAR
Published: January 9, 2009

WASHINGTON — The House voted on Friday to give women powerful new tools to challenge sex discrimination by employers who pay women less than men for the same or substantially similar work.

The action shows how Congress, working with President-elect Barack Obama, intends to make a swift, sharp break with civil rights policies of the Bush administration.

“In the first week of the new Congress, this is the legislation we are putting forward: pay equity, fairness to women in the workplace,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California. “These are our priorities. This Congress has heard the message of change in the election.”

The House passed two related bills on Friday. One, approved 247 to 171, would give workers more time to file lawsuits claiming job discrimination.

The bill would overturn a 2007 decision by the Supreme Court that enforced a strict 180-day deadline, thwarting a lawsuit by Lilly M. Ledbetter, a longtime supervisor at the Goodyear tire plant in Gadsden, Ala. Three Republicans voted for the bill.

The other bill — passed 256 to 163, with support from 10 Republicans — would make it easier for women to prove violations of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which generally requires equal pay for equal work.

President Bush threatened to veto both bills, saying they would “invite a surge of litigation” and “impose a tremendous burden on employers.” Congress will not give him the opportunity.

Mr. Obama is eager to sign the bills, and it appears he will be able to do so. Supporters of the legislation said they believed they could come up with the 60 votes needed to ensure passage in the Senate, after two vacant seats are filled..."

Franken emerges as GOP Public Enemy No. 1

With only a longshot court appeal standing in the way of Democrat Al Franken’s election to the Senate, Republicans are gritting their teeth and bracing for the arrival of a new senator whose every utterance will sound like nails on a chalkboard to them.

While Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) has filed suit to contest the results of a disputed recount process that turned his narrow lead into a 225-vote deficit, his likely defeat stands to turn Franken, the polarizing former “Saturday Night Live” writer, into the senator who launched a thousand direct mail fundraising appeals.

The GOP-PERS need to get over it. Big Al will be seated. We would not want to deprive Minnesota of two Democratic Senators.

Report on COBRA confirms what we already knew
Chris in Paris · 1/10/2009 05:25:00 AM ET · Link
7 Comments · reddit · FARK · Digg It! · Stumble It! · facebook

It's too expensive. COBRA has never made much sense to me because if you have just lost your job, how are you going to find enough money for insurance? Where do you find a spare $1000+ per month to insure a family when you don't have a job? Sure, having easy access to health insurance is great but the costs - especially today - are well out of reach.

The cost of buying health insurance for unemployed Americans who try to purchase coverage through a former employer consumes 30 percent to 84 percent of standard unemployment benefits, according to a report released yesterday.

Because few people can afford that, the authors say, the result is a growing number of people being hit with the double whammy of no job and no health coverage.

In 1985, Congress passed legislation enabling newly unemployed Americans to extend their employer-based health insurance for up to 18 months. But under the program, known as COBRA, the individual must pay 102 percent of the policy's full cost.

Instead of cash handouts and yet another round of business tax deductions, solving problems like this ought to be considered first. It would be nice to think that our next President who ran on a campaign of change would actually target change instead of the same old, same old. Is that really asking for too much?

http://www.americablog.com/2009/01/report-on-cobra-confirms-what-we.html

Cobra is better than nothing but just isn't a good system. We need a real national health care system.

one final rant and then i need to prepare the old ponderosa for the next storm...it is quite silly, absurd and helpful that sister sarah is keeping her face on the tube whining about her unfair treatment in the press. this gambit of complaining about the couric interview and tina fey's evisceration of her is pathetic but also helpful. the more the repelicans are associated with sarah and the more we are all reminded of how stupid and nasty her performance was ( "hanging out with terrorists", "small town is where the real americans are", etc. etc. ) the more likely it is the party will remain in the clutches of a minority of the voters and never get a voting majority. if we can get enough years with these clowns in the wilderness we will be able to make such fundemental changes to how this country operates towards its citizens and towards the world that fifty or sixty years will not be enough time to reverse them. think of the fact that fdr got social security passed about seventy years ago and despite the venom the right directed at it all those years it is still alive and well and cherished by the people...bbl.

Minn. voters growing tired of Norm Coleman Hotlist
by Jed L
Fri Jan 09, 2009 at 02:15:03 PM PST

Time for Norm to quit:

POLL: Coleman should concede

An exclusive Survey USA poll shows nearly half of Minnesotans surveyed say its time for Republican Norm Coleman to concede the U.S. Senate race to Democrat Al Franken.

According to the poll, 56% of Minnesotans think the recount was fair to both sides and just 31% think it was unfair to Norm Coleman. 49% disagree with Coleman's decision to contest the election (42% agree) and 44% think he should concede.

Neither candidate is doing well with voters: both are viewed unfavorably by a plurality of Minnesotans, who just want to see this conflict go away. To that end, perhaps most telling of all: just 8% want to see another recount, which is what Coleman's election contest requests.

Despite these numbers, the alternate reality Coleman campaign claims to be enthused:

The Coleman campaign says the poll reinforces their decision to contest the election to make sure all Minnesotans can be assured the results are valid.

Yikes. I guess that's why nobody ever accused Norm Coleman of being being the sharpest tool in the shed...

Gee Sandy, where were you in highschool when they taught world geography? Fornicating in the backseat of a beat up Edsel? The shipping route from Greece to Israel is almost a straight shot, less than 800 nautical miles, and goes NOWHERE EVEN CLOSE to Somalia. Look at a map before you start posting bullshit....

And pirates can't go other places other than off the Horn of Africa? Where in the hell have you been? Modern pirates have been operating around the globe with arms bought from American gun shows for decades.

It's this sort of conservative flat earth thinking that allowed the 911 terris to learn to fly planes (not land them) inside our shores at American flight schools and then walk onto commercial airplanes at our border to attack this nation.

The threat is clear and present, so you don't go around outsourcing your military and issuing press releases about it. I wouldn't be surprised if Bush didn't hire the Russians to haul this ammo who would then turn around and deliver it to Iran instead.

You forget just how stupid your side is. We don't...and neither will the next few younger generations of Americans who will never trust the GOP again. You're damaged, faulty, and unsafe goods. Get used to living with the reputation you created for yourself.

Hi, rj.

The RNC doesn't have anything but a right flank left and a few really desperate incumbents. My Rep Senator Bond has bailed out rather than face the music in 2010.

He was a semi-Far right advocate. I'll give him Brownie points for starting that "socialist" early childhood education program, Parents as First Teachers. Funny, but that was the only thing he was publicizing yesterday as he made his Leagacy Farewell Tour around our state.

Apparently, it's good to be a progressive again...even if it's one of your main Republican failings.

We better keep our eyes on Eisenhower's old domain. The rats may try to make their reemergence through a pothole in the Midwest as populists and progressives. What other lie can they run on?

I'm not sure if Kennedy has the balls to last for the long haul, but like Burris, why not seat her and find out?

We need as many of those reliable Democratic votes in the Senate as we can right now. She certainly wouldn't have any problem raising money for herself or another Democratic candidate in 2010. We must hold onto this state.

New York can be tricky as a blue state. The RNC isn't as Far Right there except when it comes to economic irresponsibility/globalization crap which isn't going to get any Republican elected for a long time. But the fiscal conservative bend is alluring...

I'd like to see the New York Democrats fight for the nomination in 2010 just to see who is the strongest. While I see Kennedy mostly as a place saver, she might fool us all. Other inspired newcomers have proven their worth and taken their place inside our party.

Gas price hikes do to an escalating war in the Middle East? No wonder Bush is staying out of it... he's letting the pig feed on the market one more time. And NOW they want to escalate it? It's aweful. Making millions suffer doesn't stop a few people with home-made "rockets." I wonder why they don't understand that they are creating more violence? Do they care? Or is it another leader of a nation with falling popularity so he decides to start the war to get some to rally around him? I think so.

They are all trying to hold onto some power with these fruitless attacks...sensing that something new is about to come onto the scene that will change the way this human tragedy is handled in the future.

The time for change has come. Some welcome it; some worry about where they will fit into the new picture. It's a time for reflection over why nothing that has been tried in the last 60 years has ever worked. And it's also a time to embrace flexibility.

IMO, seat Roland Burris because it's the law, and Burris knows that if he doesn't perform very well for Democrats, he will face a huge field of very popular Dems in a primary in just more than a year. I think Burris wants to be re-elected once he tastes the power, and will not mess this up. Also, both Burris and the Gov know that everything has been recorded for a couple of years, so Burris is clean. Sure, he helped the Gov, but that's politics, and it's very legal and normal. IMO, seat Burris, and watch him like a hawk. I'm sick of hearing about this in the news.

Who knew that Fitzgerald would "talk" about releasing more Blagovich tapes to the public? Who knew that this would get turned into a media circus? Who knew that this was really a media stunt designed to haunt Dems, especially Illinois Democrats, for a very long time? I told you all.

If Fitz has the goods on Blago... bring charges NOW, and let the Dems move on with Lt. Gov Patrick Quinn. The Illinois Lt. Gov is more than qualified, and he will do an excellent job.

Good morning / afternoon, all!

I see we have a new poster doing line by line rebuttals. Perhaps he didn't lurk back to yesterday when this article (which is the basis of the give and take between Sandy and the troll) was posted?

LONDON (Reuters) - The U.S. is seeking to hire a merchant ship to deliver hundreds of tons of arms to Israel from Greece later this month, tender documents seen by Reuters show.

U.S. seeks ship to move arms to Israel

See? Military shipments being outsourced to non military corporations. NO Navy protection, NO armed ships, NO US Navy sailors protecting tons of bang bang. Just an unarmed merchant marine ship chugging along minding its own business doing 2 round trips. Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?

It's like something out of a James Bond movie just waiting to happen.

Hey dude, who's the friend who directed you here? Anybody we would know? Any chance he or she is from MN?

So a third flag operation is getting involved with international arms shipments? Again, what could possibly go wrong? Which country do you think will volunteer to be the next terrorism target? Italy? Spain? Greece? And nowhere in that article DOES it say that there will be a naval escort.

Just more stupidity from the Chimp. Why advertise it anyway? I know Chimpco doesn't believe in covert operations (i.e., outing Plame and her entire spy cell operation and its contacts) because it ain't macho enough for the penile challenged little men in the GOP but, c'mon!

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]

No, the question you dupe, is how stupid are you. Sandy's post was as follows:

Why doesn't the White House just send a personal press release to the Somalia pirates informing them what and where to look for their next ransom target? Who are the military geniuses who thought up privatization of arms shipments?

Who are the idiots who thought up governmental privatization of anything?

53SandyH on January 9, 2009 at 10:19 PM

Her reference to "Somalia pirates" was obviously meant to provide a specific group to represent a larger group. So while she used "omalia pirates" to get her point accross that the information should not be published, she could have just as easily used "Islamic terrorists" or something similar. Because I know you're stupid, I'll spell it out for you. She could have said,
"Why doesn't the White House just send a personal press release to the ISLAMIC TERRORISTS informing them what and where to look for their next SHIPMENT of ARMS? See how that works. You use a specific example to make a general point.
Poor stupid republican dupe.

And regarding the guns the pirates use, where do the get them? You seem to think your so smart and you seem to think that if they don't get on a boat and come here themselves, then SOME of the guns can't at some point be purchased in the US. Well, where do the get them. Put up or shut up.

Chicago and DBDBD: While you read the posts of the TROLLS above, please remember how they think of you and their objectives in posting here before you consider answering them.

This is from Wiki:

The contemporary use of the term is alleged to have first appeared on the internet in the late 1980s[3], but the earliest known example is from 1991[4]. It is thought to be a truncation of the phrase trolling for suckers, itself derived from the fishing technique of slowly dragging a bait through water, known as trolling.[5] The word also evokes the trolls portrayed in Scandinavian folklore and children's tales as they are often obnoxious creatures bent on mischief and wickedness. The verb "troll" originates from Old French "troller", a hunting term. The noun "troll", however, is an unrelated Old Norse word for a giant or demon. [6]

And YOU are the one that claimed they didn't get any of the guns they use from gun shows. As I said, you seem to be so stupid as to believe that if they don't get on a boat and buy them themselves, then the gun couldn't have come through a gun show. So the easy way to see if YOU know what YOU are talking about is for YOU to show us how YOU know where the guns come from. So, As I said, put up or shut up, stupid republican dupe!

Good afternoon, all.

So the conservatives have sent out Professor Troll and that sore loser who always defends the inalienable rights of incompetents to act hysterical when their ideology fails.

How's this for a topic of argument:

The current economic mess was deliberately designed to cover up the traitorous activities of those who instigated globalization.

Any takers from the other side?

You conservatives knew that deregulation would lead to speculation and de-stablize the banking and financial sector. What a plan. You could benefit financially from being at the top of the Ponzi schemes and also dump the blame on sub-primes instead of the outsourcing of American assets and equity to foreign concerns.

You liquidated our capitol under the cover of night. So much for patriots and family values.

It was a clever idea but it all backfired when Bush started a costly war that made commodities more attractive than securities and ran up the deficit contrary to conservative philosophy. You should have explained it all to The Chimp and clued in those bird brain Neocons.

The banks finally caught on and balked at extending any more credit to a bankrupt Bush Crime Family enterprise which owes everyone including Communist countries who are now going to nationalize any American assets within their borders or financial institutions.

But you still can focus attention to the Second Great Depression instead of the traitors within our borders who sold their country out to foreign interests.

The Scam is treason. Republicans no longer are Americans. They consider themselves members of the World's Elite. But now the World's Elite are in hot water all around the globe with their citizens, too, because of Bush.

Moral of the story....Never put a C- student in charge of anything and give him unlimited power.

WOW, you really ARE stupid.

First of all, it doesn't have to be Somalian pirates. As I said, that was just a general example to make the point. Do you understand how that works, or do you read at a third grade level. That would explain why you are having trouble understanding. In the third grade readers, when they talk about a rabbit, they mean a rabbit. So unless you are reading at a third grade level, stop being so literal.
Second, as I also stated, the people using the guns don't necessarily have to buy them themselves. Gee, maybe they could have a person here working with them? Maybe they could buy them a few at a time??? Do ya' think? So unless they are an idiot like you, they would not have to buy $400,000 worth of guns at one show. Gee, maybe they could buy a few here and a few there. You already look stupid for believing that only AMERICAN made guns are sold at US gun shows. DPD illustrated that idiotic comment of your well. Try a little harder on this part. So the ball is STILL in your court, dip-stick. Where do these pirates get there guns? If you know, show us with a link. If you don't, then just admit you are a stupid republican twit who doesn't really know what he is talking about.
So it will be simple, if you don't post a link, you're a twit.

Again your flat earth outlook on the world stops at the Temple of Limbaugh.

Gunning running is a very lucrative business with all the chaos in the world mostly started by conservatives wanting to make a fast buck. These "business men" will go to any easy source, pick up the material, and re-sell it to anyone.

Gun shows have been notorious for their lack of security. Nobody asks any questions. And if someone suggests that there maybe a problem, they are against the Second Amendment.

The people who troll those events have a network that works in the back rooms at these places. You can buy just about anything including missiles if you have entry to the network and know how the system works. Many of our nation's adversaries and other countries' military have been working our stupidity for years.

When you won't face the facts, you're doomed to failure. I suppose that's why Republicans are seen as just that now by voters.

I suppose you will just start up another party or go into rehab and find Jesus...again. You're too much of cowards to come out of the closet and admit who you really are.

neo_con on January 10, 2009 at 02:03 PM

Well looky there... Neocon can actually back up one of his arguments. Thank you. Of course the fact that they get MOST of their guns from Yemen and a "significant amount" from Mogadishu, does not mean that,
1. The guns are manufactured there.
2. They don't get some of their guns through other sources.
And again, Sandy's point was more general. She said,
"And pirates can't go other places other than off the Horn of Africa? Where in the hell have you been? Modern pirates have been operating around the globe with arms bought from American gun shows for decades." So she was talking about pirates in general and actually indicated pirates OTHER than the Somalian ones were using weapons from gun shows. Understand what was said before you start off trying to prove something that has nothing to do with the arguement. But I'm glad your not a complete twit. Thanks for the link.

As the Pugs famously state often, "We don't do nuance".

(Meaning they don't think, ergo the main point as to WHY they are horrible at diplomacy and tact.)

And let's get off the Somalian pirates distraction. ANYBODY can read Chimpy's advertisment for a ship (the Millenium Falcon) to openly smuggle/sneak TONS of explosives from point A to point B twice.

GEE, d'ya t'ink Hammas has anybody with a RPG that can read English?

neo_con on January 10, 2009 at 02:27 PM

I'm actually very conservative both fiscally and socially. That's how I was raised and it's made my life rich in many ways.

I'm not "making" anybody or anything look bad. I'm being realistic. One must face facts and the way things are not insist that everything is OK when it's not. You make adjustments and work with others to get things done. I was taught that by my parents, my liberal arts education, and by my faith.

You refuse to admit anything is wrong. I believe that was one of Jesus' main teachings: Don't be afraid of admitting you've gone down the wrong path. You aren't going to be judged by your mistakes when you can learn from them and change.

There is something ingrained in the current Republican conservative ideology that does not allow for anything but perfection. You have to control everything and must never admit you faltered. This black and white view of the universe is not conducive to happiness or any real success in the long-term.

Go ahead and continue to live for the short-term. You're life is edging every so quickly to the long-term and you can't stop it. And you can't be perfect; you weren't created that way. Neither was I and I admit it.

I expect to be proven wrong. When I get it right, it's usually because others point it out to me. I look for advice and criticism.

Grow up and accept your mortality. You're way to old to be behaving like an adolescent. I'm tired of having this discussion every few weeks with the same people.

Sit back and watch the Inauguration with the rest of us. Enjoy the fact that new people with new ideas are going to be giving it a try. Failure is so hard to face year after year after year...like it's been the last eight.

bbl.

Reading "Breaking Ranks: Refusing to Serve in the West Bank and Gaza Strip," by Ronit Chacham, Jerusalem, Israel. Interviews with 9 Israeli soldiers and how they could no longer live with themselves while oppressing/killing the Palestinians during the occupation (2003).
ISBN # 1-59051-043-7
www.otherpress.com

These are the events missing from our media, but not from the rest of the world, which explains 20,000 protesting in London today.

We need a change of policy with Israel. At the same time we need a change in energy policy. The two are inter-related. We get off of middle east oil, and the Middle East is no longer strategically linked to energy. (Hydrogen/exlectric).

We have a serious economic problem with staggering debt. Cut aid to Israel. We've funded them with billions enough in military aid. That will send a clear signal.

We need to learn the history of this 1948 Israeli state, which has been sorely lacking from our school's curriculums. Read "The Transfer Agreement" (the Ha 'avara), by Edwin Black (American Jewish author). This state is not simply made up of Holocaust victims, but also 50,000 Jews who enter Palestine in 1933 in exchange for transferring assets to the Third Reich, and opening trade through Palestine, breaking their own world trade embargo against Germany. This Ashkenazim (European) leadership has dominated the state ever since then, and never recognized the rights of the natives, and segregates itself from the local Safardic native Arab Jews. Paradoxically, the state is built on this internal racism. And the victim turned victimizer from the beginning.

Our media will continue to feed Islamaphobia...the nine soldiers of the IDF were fed it from childhood on, growing up in Israel. It's time to read, look again, beyond the AIPAC controlled media we have. Right now, we are only feeding the problem of ongoing antisemitism - against the people of Palestine - yes as strange as it sounds...for they are the one's being driven off of land and killed in the greatest numbers.

There is a danger, of the anonymity of this technology, that allows people to engage in attacks and exchanges that are subhuman. It feeds alienation, rather than enhancing communication. Looks like we might get to find out after all who Jeff Gannon was visiting all those times he showed up at the White House....

Judge Rejects Keeping White House Visitor Logs Private

U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth's ruling dismissed the Bush administration's argument that revealing Secret Service logs would impede the president's ability to perform his constitutional duties.

By Pete Yost
Associated Press
Saturday, January 10, 2009; Page A07

A federal judge yesterday rejected the Bush administration's latest attempt to keep secret the identities of White House visitors, and he declared that the government illegally deleted Secret Service computer records.

U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth concluded that the deletions took place before October 2004, when the Secret Service transferred large numbers of entry and exit logs to the White House and then deleted copies of them.

The deletions ceased after the archivist to the United States instructed the Secret Service to stop the practice and after various private organizations went to court in an effort to gain access to the logs, according to papers filed in the case. The deletions date to at least 2001, the government's papers added, the year President Bush took office.

Lamberth's ruling brushed aside the government's argument that revealing Secret Service logs would impede the president's ability to perform his constitutional duties.

The judge said that the likelihood of harm is not great enough to justify curtailing the public disclosure goals of the Freedom of Information Act.

While the case was a setback for the Bush White House, the effect of the claim of a presidential communications privilege succeeded in dragging out the lawsuit until the end of the Bush administration...

Jesus Christ opn a pogo stick. You really ARE that stupid.

They are two articles (actually 1 article and a rewrite) BOTH by Philip Elliot, posted about 1 hour apart. Philip Elliot probably didn't even write the second one, some junior editor may have because 9pay attention, now) AP is a news "wire service" that provides content to a slew of member papers and othe media.

They regularly post 200, 100 and shorter versions of the same "story" so the local editors can fit the thing into their available page space. They may even be working on a long form 10 column inch broadsheet layout right now for the Sunday paper run.

Again, everything you post just reiterates the point that you Pug wingnuts have been spouting bullshit for over 8 years now, and you truly have NOTHING left.

It just shows the shallowness of the Pug "thought process" in that you cling to nothing and think you are holding gold.

Me, too. I bet she could rise to the occasion. The more the Republicans and their corporate media bash her, the more I'm thinking she has a lot of potential.

Have you ever read Kennedy's book about the Bill of Rights. She seemed to be on top of Bush's growing threat in that area when the rest of us were still just outraged about the WMD lies.

Four Benefits of Putting Margin in Your Life

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

*** *** *** ***

Here are four immediate benefits you’ll receive by building margin into your life:

1. Peace of mind. When you’re not always hurrying and worrying, you have time to think, time to relax, time to enjoy life. We had a bird come into the building one evening before service. He started singing, and it was just like we’d been given an invitation: “Just relax. Everybody except those sitting directly under the bird, relax.”

2. Better health. Unrelenting stress harms our bodies. We all know that, yet we let it continue day after day after day. Many times we only build margin in our lives after the heart attack almost happens or does happen, or the blood pressure skyrockets. Why do we wait until our health plummets before we make this decision? Why not realize thatwe need to build some margin intoour lives now? The truth is your body needs downtime in order to heal. Race cars make pit stops occasionally in order to get repaired. You can’t fix anything going 200 miles an hour. Yet, we try to repair ourselves while we’re still racing through life. Margin builds in time for better health.

3. Stronger relationships. Lack of margin is one big reason for the collapse of the American family today. When we don’t make relationships a priority and make time for each other, our relationships suffer. Relationships take time; and margin provides the time to sit and talk, to listen and enjoy one another, and to provide the comfort we each need.

4. Usefulness in ministry. When you’re overloaded by activity, you can only think of yourself. You’re in survival mode, just trying to make it through another day. But being available to God for his use makes all the difference in this world.

When you have no margin in your life and God taps you on the shoulder, saying, “I’d like you to do this for me,” your first response isn’t joy. Your first response is, “Oh, no! Another thing to do! Sorry, God – I’d like to do that, but I’m just too busy.”

We end up resenting the great opportunities God brings into our lives. But when you have margin, you’re available for God to use.

You don’t have to live on overload. You don’t have to live in survival mode. Begin today to build a buffer around your schedule. Then enjoy the benefits of margin and see what God does next!

Someone asked what the real unemployment looked like...

"More Jobs Melt Away in Dec. by Jeannine Aversa, The Associated Press,

Washington - ...All told, 11.1 million people were unemployed in December. An additional 8 million people were working part-time - a categroty that includes those who would like to work full time but whose hours were cut back or those who were unable to find full-time work. That was up sharply from 7.3 million in November.

If those part-time employees, discouraged workers and others are factored in, the unemployment rate would have been much higher - 13.5% in December. ..."

13.5% unemployment adjusted real rate!

Concerned

190
HybridFuel on January 10, 2009 at 08:53 PM

Unemployment rate of 13.5% is backed up by real government statistics. The real number is reported to congress and the president but not the public. This is from the governments own data!

See Table A-12 Alternative Measure of Labor Underutilization (percentage)

http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t12.htm

Dec 2008 13.5%

U-6 Total unemployed, plus all marginally atached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percentage of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers.

HybridFuel on January 10, 2009 at 09:00 PM

EEEK!

Is this assclown (who pays next to NOTHING for his luxury digs in D.C.; and in fact sometimes does pay NOTHING) the WORST money manager in history?

It appears from the filings that Coleman and his family piled up a huge increase in their debt -- rising from a $172,000 first mortgage to a final $775,000 30-year loan registered in 2007.

(bold in original)

Norm "ReFi" Coleman

192
Doo-Bee-Doo-Bee-Doo on January 10, 2009 at 09:26 PM

Let's review Norm Coleman's finances.

Loan Qualification:

Under normal conditions (that's the last 50 years, less the 8 crazy bush years!) one can only borrow 33% of ones gross income. A USA Senator maked $150,000 to $190,000 per year. The $190K was an increase just put into place about 18 months ago. The $150K captures the value of salaries at the beginning of the bush era. Let's assume an average of $175K per year.

Maximum Mortgage Payment per Year = $175K x 0.33
Max Annual Mortage PMT = $57,750

Monthly Payment = $57,750 /12 = $4812.50

Assume previous interest rate during bush years as 6.375% fixed, 30 years, then the highest present value loan this person can qualify for will be = $771,394.81.

So, Norm Coleman is actually max'd out on his loan amount for his salary range on his house, assuming he has no other debts!

193
HybridFuel on January 10, 2009 at 09:58 PM

A $771K house is not a big house in DC in close proximity to work!!!

Thanks for responding. You may well be right about the continued carnage in Gaza by the IDF. However, Israel's problem will not be solved. There problem is internalized in Theodore Herzl's ideology that all outside the state are naturally their enemy. Their oppression toward Palestine has been the seedbed for the inroads of groups like the PLO and now Hamas. The Orthodox communities in the USA are opposed to their secular state.

We are in an economic train wreck of an economy, and part of this trajectory has been supporting wars in the Middle East/CIA training in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation. All these things for strategic oil interest have come home to roost. This war has the potential - to again - do more of the same. AIPAC - perhaps they have already gotten to Obama. Time will tell....

And when the republicans try their obstructionist tactics, they will lose more seats in the house and senate.

Remember when all the republicans were spouting the talking point that the approval ratings of the Congress "controlled by the Democrats" were lower than Bush's? They assumed people were mad at the Democrats. Well guess what, the election proved that to be WAY wrong. The idiot republicans LOST big time because Americans were mad at them much more than the Democrats.

So if the republicans continue to filibuster every bill in site, they are going to lose a LOT more seats in 2010.

There needs to be comprehensive election law reform. the eac is still in it's infant stage, and I doubt HAVA will be the vehicle that they use. states will probably look at it on a case by case matter. I know that our office here in OH, will be working with the new state legislature (democratic controlled for the first time in 14 years) on initiatives that will be consistent and straight forward. Our SOS has held the first of many election summits, that included election officials from both sides of the aisle, to legislators, general public, activists, and those in academics.

both sides boo hoo and point fingers when their candidate doesn't win.

Hopefully the dumbass voters will wake up and we will not have another. They are too painful to too many people and the neocons don't give a shit.

Franken is temporarily ahead because the Democrats and Democrat "acorn" Sec of State cheated in the recount. That is in addition to the cheating the Dems did in the election itself. The courts will sort it out though.

"January 10, 2009 "Salon" -- -World concern over, and opposition to, the Israeli war in Gaza is rapidly mounting:
International pressure intensified sharply on Israel on Thursday, the 13th day of its Gaza assault, after the United Nations suspended food aid deliveries, the International Committee of the Red Cross accused the Israelis of knowingly blocking assistance to the injured, and a top Vatican official defended comments in which he compared Gaza to a concentration camp.

The Israelis have deliberately made it impossible to know the full extent of the carnage and humanitarian disasters because they continue to prevent journalists from entering Gaza even in the face of a now week-old Israeli Supreme Court order compelling them to do so. According to Palestinian sources, there are now 700 dead Palestinians -- at least 200 of them children -- and well over 1,000 wounded. Those numbers are not seriously doubted by anyone. By comparison, a total of 10 Israelis have died -- 10 -- almost all of them by "friendly fire." The unusually worded Red Cross condemnation of Israel was prompted by its discovery, after finally being allowed into Gaza, of starving Palestinian children laying next to corpses, with ambulances blocked for days by the IDF. Even with the relative "restraint" Israel is excercising (the damage it could cause is obviously much greater), this is not so much of a war as it is a completely one-sided massacre.

As a result, much of the world is urging an end to the war and acting to forge a cease-fire -- except the United States. Here, blind and unequivocal support for the Israeli attack is actually increasing almost as fast as the Palestinian body count piles up. Apparently, it isn't enough that we supply the very bombs being dropped on the Palestinians and use our U.N. veto power to prevent any U.N. action to stop the war or even to urge its cessation. The U.S. Congress wants to involve the U.S. further still in Israel's war.

This afternoon, the Democratic-led U.S. Senate did just that by enacting -- via a cowardly voice vote -- a completely one-sided, non-binding resolution that expresses unequivocal support for the Israeli war, and heaps all the blame for the conflict on Hamas and none of it on Israel. Harry Reid -- who jointly sponsored the Resolution with GOP Leader Mitch McConnell -- proudly proclaimed: "When we pass this resolution, the United States Senate will strengthen our historic bond with the state of Israel." On its website, AIPAC is already patting the U.S. Senate on its head for "for conveying America's unequivocal and steadfast support for Israel's right to self-defense

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article21705.htm

I don't get it! The US stands back, watches for years as Israel bulldozes and builds cement walls, and occupies terrority that belongs to Palestine, yet, when Palestine try and defends itself against this occupation, sends even more weapons to Israel to demolish the country being wronged! What are they missing? The entire world condems Israel except for the USA! What is in it for them?

Rumor is, that Israel is hurrying to get this done while Bush is still in office. I pray they are right, that President Obama will take a different approach to what has been going on there for years! If Israel stayed where they were supposed to, there would never have been any aggression or suicide bombers or rockets used against them! There could have been such a thing as PEACE there.

good view of it all:

It took Fintan O'Toole, The Irish Times's resident philosopher-in-chief, to speak the unspeakable. "When does the mandate of victimhood expire?" he asked. "At what point does the Nazi genocide of Europe's Jews cease to excuse the state of Israel from the demands of international law and of common humanity?"

I ended the week in one of those BBC World Service discussions in which a guy from The Jerusalem Post, a man from al-Jazeera, a British academic and Fisk danced the usual steps around the catastrophe in Gaza. The moment I mentioned that 600 Palestinian dead for 20 Israeli dead around Gaza in 10 years was grotesque, pro-Israeli listeners condemned me for suggesting (which I did not) that only 20 Israelis had been killed in all of Israel in 10 years. Of course, hundreds of Israelis outside Gaza have died in that time – but so have thousands of Palestinians

Israel is the prime example of what happens when right wingnut religious extremists take over a country.
Jews of conscience are being denigrated and disrespected as "self-hating" and the suffering and deaths of those outside of the Zionist clique are of no consequence, unless they are fellow Jews, in which case they are useful for propaganda purposes.
These Zionist extremists learned a lot from the Nazis.

Israel's response is out of proportion to the amount of damage done by the Palestinian rockets.
Most Palestinians only want fair treatment, but the jack-booted responses of the Zionists who are in control of the Israeli government fuel hatred of the Jews, and provide more recruits for Hamas.
Just like our stupidity in Iraq is fueling recruitment for Al Qaida.

Obama to honor McCain on inauguration eve

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Barack Obama is planning to honor one-time rival John McCain at a dinner on the eve of his inauguration.

Obama's inaugural committee said Saturday it has planned three dinners across Washington to honor leaders who worked across party lines. Republican McCain, Democratic Vice President-elect Joe Biden and former Secretary of State Colin Powell, also a Republican, are set to be honored Jan. 19...

Why stops with McCain? Why not have a dinner for all the Republicans who decided not to run for re-election. Hold a dinner for Brit Hume and George Will for saying that FDR caused the Great Depression? A dinner for sally* and Gangbanger?

They all have reached across the aisle to demonstrate to voters how irresponsible, incompetent, and silly Republicans can be.

Pirates use American gun shows. Iran and Pakistan use the American war profiteering machine designed by Cheney's Halliburton...

Iran Using Fronts to Get Bomb Parts From U.S.

By Joby Warrick
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, January 11, 2009

The Iranian businessman was looking for high-quality American electronics, but he had to act stealthily: The special parts he coveted were denied to Iranians, especially those seeking to make roadside bombs to kill U.S. troops in Iraq.

With a few e-mails, the problem was solved. A friendly Malaysian importer would buy the parts from a company in Linden, N.J., and forward them to Iran. All that was left was coming up with a fake name for the invoice. Perhaps a Malaysian engineering school? "Of course, you can use any other company as end-user that you think is better than this," the Iranian businessman, Ahmad Rahzad, wrote in an e-mail dated March 8, 2007.

The ruse succeeded in delivering nine sensors called inclinometers to Iran, the first of several such shipments that year and the latest example of what U.S. officials and weapons experts describe as Iran's skillful flouting of export laws intended to stop lethal technology from reaching the Islamic republic...

No wonder Bush wouldn't allow Israel to bomb Iran. It would have cut into Cheney's bottom line.

Bush: I Personally Authorized Torture Of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed»

In an interview with Brit Hume that aired today on Fox News Sunday, President Bush admitted that he personally authorized the torture of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. He said he personally asked “what tools” were available to use on him, and sought legal approval for waterboarding him:

BUSH: One such person who gave us information was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. … And I’m in the Oval Office and I am told that we have captured Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the professionals believe he has information necessary to secure the country. So I ask what tools are available for us to find information from him and they gave me a list of tools, and I said are these tools deemed to be legal? And so we got legal opinions before any decision was made.

Watch it:

Bush staunchly defended the program, saying it saved American lives — despite interrogators’ claims to the contrary. He waved away the debate over torture by saying dismissively, “Look, I understand why people can get carried away on this issue.”

Last year, Bush admitted that he was “aware” that his national security team met to discuss KSM’s interrogation, and that he approved of the meeting. His admission today suggests Bush had a far more direct role in developing the specific torture program, which included waterboarding, a freezing cell, and long periods of standing and stress positions (all of which have long been considered torture).

What’s more, a former Pentagon intelligence analyst told Vanity Fair that “K.S.M. produced no actionable intelligence“; another former CIA official, who read all the reports from KSM’s interrogation, said, “90 percent of it was total f*cking bullsh*t.”...

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/01/11/bush-authorized-torture/

It appears the RNC's legal staff have told Bush and Cheney the best way to avoid being nabbed as war criminals in the future is to admit what they did before leaving office...and then say they thought they were doing the right thing as in the the Bush Doctrine?

Whether it's torture or WMD lies, this argument is not going to cut it with St. Peter. It won't cut it with the Iraqi people either.

For Butte/Wolfgangbanger

Thanks for engaging the topic of the war in Gaza.

At what point do we stop weighing the holocaust as a type of political capital that Israel spends for its military goals? This is a good question.

At the start, I think, we cannot leave out the history prior to the holocaust, and the great debate in the Jewish community in 1933. The Revisionist movement (Rabbi Weiss, NY) wanted to keep up the world embargo against Nazi Germany. The Mapai movement (David Ben-Gurion) wanted to transfer bank assets (for those with money) to the Reich, in exchange for safe passage to Palestine, plus other capital assets - breaking the embargo, opening trade through Palestine. The Mapai movement superseded the Revisionists. This history is worth reading. This explains today - why not all Jewish people support the 1948 state of Israel. Those left behind in the holocaust - and surviving - who came to the US - have bitter memories of their Mapai brothers and sisters. This explains groups such as the Orthodox - in Brooklyn, NY. Visit: http://www.jewsagainstzionism.com/

The question worth revisiting is whether the embargo would have caused civil war to break out in Germany - due to the shortage of food. The Revisionists (Weiss) had Hitler's back to the wall, economically.

The problem with the Mapai movement is that its hard to tell where the line is between their use of Herzl's theory that antisemitism was good insofar as it would drive the Jews out of Europe and into Palestine/ and Hitler's own antisemitism. According to Edwin Black, Hitler loved their ideas - "You want to leave, great I want you out of here...."

I have spent time listening to Christian Religious leaders of Palestine (both Catholic and Lutheran). As I hear of early violence (1948-49) when armed Israelis slaughtered the village of Gish, and buried them in a shallow grave. It appears that the leadership of Israel was behaving like the leadership they dealt with back in Germany.

Which is peculiar - your handle reminds me of the famous German writer Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the writer of the famous play entitled Faust. The point of the story is you cannot bargain with the devil without becoming just like the devil. In this regard - Butte - seems to be tracking with the present reality.

A lot of Islamaphobia has been planted here (as it was during 9/11). Keep in mind that your media is largely owned and influenced by AIPAC - The American Israeli Political Action Committee. We've already armed Israel to the hilt. But this too - goes in step historically with strategic OIL interests in the Middle East ( as was the war in Iraq)...remove the oil dependency and this entire paradigm shifts.

I think we begin to rethink the relationship - once we understand the context more fully.

Shalom

Butte, if you were the leader of Israel and your country had been subjected to indiscriminate rocket fire for 8 years and your citizens were being blown to bits by suicide bombers on streets, in cafes and hotel lobbies and on public buses, etc. - what would you do?

344WolfgangBanger on January 11, 2009 at 11:49 AM

well, if that all really bothered me, as a leader of Israel, then I would get my ass off land that I had bulldozed and stolen ! I would quit then putting up cement walls to keep the people who owned that land from crossing back and demanding it back. I would stop my occupation of country that did not belong to me! But I rather think the leaders of Israel find the loss of Israeli lives as collateral damage in their larger goal of taking more and more of Gaza, and eventually all of Palestine, because they can say they were victims and had a right to!

They cannot govern themselves properly nor do other Arab nations recognize their leadership as legitimate. They elect terrorists as leaders, harass Israel ceaselessly and instead of building up their society, they continue to waste their energy with destructive behavior

uhhhh, Wolfie, do you have ANY idea why Hamas was elected as their leader??? does the name, George Bush and his neo con administration mean anything to you? They had this little idea that backfired, you know. In order to get rid of Fatah, headed by Arafat, they tried promoting the rise of Islamic parties as a counterweight, on the theory that Islamic groups would not have the same nationalistic impulses

So Fatah's social networks were dismantled by the Israeli government, but it went easy on Islamic charitable networks. This decision fueled the rise of Hamas as a political force, with its network of health clinics and social services that far exceeded the abilities of the often-corrupt Fatah movement.

"There's no question there was a degree of blowback," Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator and the author of "The Much Too Promised Land."

Israel now wants to make a peace deal with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president who heads Fatah but has no control over Gaza. So one of the Israeli aims in Gaza today is to weaken Hamas enough that it no longer can be a political rival to Fatah in Gaza -- precisely the opposite of what Israel hoped to achieve decades ago with its efforts to encourage the rise of Islamic groups.

This is not like a regime-change operation, but at the end of the day, the restoration of the Palestinian Authority back to Gaza should be on the agenda as a whole," said Jeremy Issacharoff, deputy chief of mission at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.

Similarly, the Bush administration encouraged Israel to withdraw from Gaza and demolish its settlements there, arguing that it was a step forward on peace. But, as a condition, then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2004 demanded a letter from President Bush in which the United States conceded two critical peace issues on settlements and refugees to Israel. The Israeli government later cited the letter as giving implicit permission to continue some settlement expansion during peace talks brokered late in the Bush administration, undermining those efforts.

Fromm,

You can't make peace by continually making war. That goes for both sides in this conflict.

I think it's time for the younger generation to step up in that region. The older generation is wrapped up in a vicious cycle of violence worrying about past defeats as well as future horrors.

Neither side can expect outsiders like the U.S. or Europe to change the attitudes of their neighbors. Brute force has just hardened opinions on both sides and increased the suffering for all...time and time again. the United States must only act as a catalyst to peace negotiations.

I still believe Syria is the key to a lasting peace. It has been fighting a proxy war through its neighbors for decades now. Israel must end the Six Days War with Syria and negotiate a return of the Golan Heights like it did with Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula.

All the weapons and aid from other Moslem nations sympathetic to the Palestinian plight are coming to Hamas and Hezbalah through Syria.
The younger President Bashar al- Assad of Syria could stop the cycle of madness by turning off the spigot. He could make conditions better for new leaders to emerge in both Israel and Palestine who could negotiate in good faith.

With an end to constant hostilities, pragmatic men could come to power eager for a lasting two state solution...with the support of the majority of their people who are tired of the constant suffering and unease. This conflict must not cannot become a nuclear standoff, but it is heading that way if Israel doesn't finally end the war with Syria started in 1967.

The end of hostilities is not the ultimate goal here. The Middle East needs to be looking for a return to normal relations between neighbors. Israel will not be broken. Palestine must become an equal state.

imho, it's time for a new generation and a new approach to find peace in the Middle East. The old men have botched this one up real good.

I think Israel and most of the world was happy when the UN gave them land back in '47. any land outside of what was designated as their's, or any that they may have gotten legitimately, is their's! No questions. No arguements. Period. I would lead the people who I allowed to be part of this occupation and settling on land not belonging to them, BACK to the original country, called Israel.

Pirates have been running amuck all over the globe for the past five of six year holding major nations over a barrel...not just the one's operating off the coast of Sommolia.

Somebody is supplying the firepower and making a nice profit off of it. Others are paying these thugs millions in ransom money. It's a lucrative business during a world-wide recession.

The guns always come from the least secure places and the most unthinking people who don't think twice about where their wares end up. American gun shows and the importers who buy up these arms and send them to third-world nations are some of the most insecure places on this planet.

Where there is greed there are always players and a lot of them are in high places in this country.
I bet gun running and the distribution of other military supplies and technology is the few industries still functioning in this country today...by design of conservative "businessmen" who are the greediest by far. Hi, Pam.

You really wonder about the mental capacity of some of these doorknobs. Did you see the latest Joe the Plumber video on U Tube? Now there's a prime example of how bad things have gotten over on the Far Right. The more they talk, the dumber the Republicans look.

We are all Joe the Plumber? Thank the Lord, no.

Are you talking about the Party of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove? Won't happen. That Republican Party's goal is world domination and complete control of this nation and all the world's resources...of their profit.

No wonder pirates are on the rise again. They are just following the example Bush gave them.

If this wasn't bad enough to deal with, the board is not showing posters correctly. What the heck... do we need to do a SPECIAL fundraiser just to get a decent message board, without nasty trolls attacking our senior citizen woman with aweful names? Is that asking too much?

Of all the good things Gov Dean did... running a safe bb for party members, free of repeat sicko attackers, was not one of them. I sure hope that Chairman Kaine, and the party, will address the issue, and deal with it once and for all.

For SANDYH

Right - the younger generations in Israel/Palestine need to break away from the present hatred held by current leaders. And we - the American public - need to think democratically about getting beyond our media monopoly. That's what is great about these conversations. We can think - something not encouraged by the white House in this nation the past eight years.

Elias Chacour, Palestine, founded a school that had Christian, Jewish, and Islamic children learning side by side. I wonder if his area is still in one piece.

Wolfgangbanger - The problem isn't with Israel of the ancient time - the problem is you can't return to that time through the means that the Mapai movement of Zionism - which is violent. We can't look at this through the lens of black hats and white hats with a western bias and grasp the context. Then, we are perpetuating the old conflict.

One cannot cite the parts of the Torah that are convenient for drawing the ancient map of Israel, without also citing the parts of it that recall the covenant which calls for treating one's neighbor justly. This is the entire point made by the prophets: In order to be a nation, you must treat those in need justly. Because Israel could not do this in ancient times, Assyria conquered the northern kingdom in 721 BCE, and Judah - the southern empire fell to the Babylonians in 587 BCE.

Exodus 2:21 - Moses marries Zipporah - she is an Arab by today's standards. So, here is the greatest prophet of Israel - Moses - married to an Arab. We need to reclaim these stories instead of feeding off of the fear that been implanted in our culture by the GOP's exploitation of 9/11.

Or we can turn to Ruth ad Naomi - a Jewish woman and an Arab woman becoming the best of friends.

Those who work for peace in this context need our support.

Economy made few gains in Bush years
Eight-year period is weakest in decades

By Neil Irwin and Dan Eggen
updated 12:20 a.m. ET, Mon., Jan. 12, 2009

President Bush has presided over the weakest eight-year span for the U.S. economy in decades, according to an analysis of key data, and economists across the ideological spectrum increasingly view his two terms as a time of little progress on the nation's thorniest fiscal challenges.

The number of jobs in the nation increased by about 2 percent during Bush's tenure, the most tepid growth over any eight-year span since data collection began seven decades ago. Gross domestic product, a broad measure of economic output, grew at the slowest pace for a period of that length since the Truman administration. And Americans' incomes grew more slowly than in any presidency since the 1960s, other than that of Bush's father.

I just start my day off with such a chuckle, watching the troll squirm in MN, trying to find these far fetched articles about Global Warmiong.

Could this be the same Gregory Fegel that he is quoting and swearing is credible, that has dozens of internet articles, on Impeaching Bush, sending McCain back to Vietnam and paying them to re-prison them? The Fegel who has this article de-bunking 9/11 as a Bush scheme and talking about Israel and it's crimes?

"The attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 9/11/2001; the anthrax letter attacks against two US Congressmen in October, 2001; the Spanish railway bombings in March, 2004; the London subway bombings in July, 2005; and the Bali bombings of October, 2002 and October, 2005 all show evidence of having been perpetrated by the USA and its allies, who are intent on generating animosity against the Islamic world.

The US government's 9/11 false-flag attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon involved a coordinated effort by the CIA, the White House, the NSA, the FBI, NORAD, the Pentagon, and other federal agencies, along with the ongoing complicity of the USA's major media outlets. The Israeli Mossad was also a likely accomplice to the 9/11 attacks, as indicated by evidence that demonstrates Israeli foreknowledge of those attacks. Since 9/11, the USA's intelligence agencies have been further integrated under the overall leadership of the CIA, another step toward the formation of a monolithic US secret police with a global reach. Recently the arrest and 'rendition' by the CIA of so-called 'Terrorist suspects' throughout the world to undisclosed locations, often against the protests of the nations where the arrests take place, show us that not only does the USA fancy itself to be the 'world's policeman,' but the CIA also wants to be the 'world's secret police.'

A really good article on what is happening in Gaza......

"If the goal were truly to end the Qassam rocket attacks, Israel could have done so, at any time, simply by sitting down and negotiating with Hamas. Such is the view of Neve Gordon, chair of political science at Ben Gurion University. Professor Gordon has been following the Gaza situation for years from Beersheba, located just down the road, and he even authored a book upon the subject. His analysis is undoubtedly correct. But evidently this is too simple for Israel’s leaders, who deem Hamas an unsuitable negotiating partner.

In fact, Israel’s military operation in Gaza probably has as much to do with political expedience as halting the Qassams. Israel’s leaders have resorted to violence in the past for temporary political gain: to boost their standing with voters; and the present Gaza offensive appears to be another case. It was in the planning for months and probably became inevitable after far-right Likud candidate Benjamin Netanyahu moved ahead in the polls. With Prime Minister Olmert’s Kadima party facing a tough uphill fight in the upcoming February 2009 elections, Olmert no doubt hoped to recoup Kadima’s chances by showing toughness. It is telling that Israeli voters will choose between the right and the far-right, another inconvenient truth ignored by the western press, which sees only Arab extremism.

For the record, I do not support the firing of Qassam rockets by Hamas into Israel. It is wrong. But on a scale of violence it is a mere pin-prick compared with the wholesale terror being unleashed against the Palestinians, who are almost defenseless. A comparison of the casualty figures shows that 99% of the violence is being directed at the Palestinians; and the numbers do not lie. Unfortunately, due to the media filter their significance has been lost. The US media always portrays Israel in the best possible light and the Palestinians in the worst. It is a formula that distorts real events beyond recognition. As a result, most Americans do not understand what is happening.

The Critical US Role

Indeed, it is remarkable that even though the US Senate just voted unanimous support for Israel many Americans probably still think the United States is not directly involved in the Gaza violence. Nothing could be further from the truth. The US is deeply involved.

Bush's legacy is cemented as the worse ever - stupid Chimp!

Category: Job Creation. Bush: Worst. President. Ever. Hotlist
by Meteor Blades
Sun Jan 11, 2009 at 02:00:05 PM PST

As everyone who follows the news knows by now, unemployment was up again sharply in December. Totally expected, of course, and, as nearly every economist is saying, very alarming. For instance:

"These numbers, back to back, of more than a half million a month suggest that the U.S. economy is in a freefall," said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight. "It’s scary, and it indicates that unless something is done and done quickly to turn this economy around, we’re looking at an awful situation this year." ...

"This is unprecedented," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Economy.com. "It’s coast to coast. It’s everywhere. There’s really no refuge in this job market. There’s no safe place."

Not so. Just over a week from now, George Walker Bush will be unemployed, and I suspect his bank account will provide a refuge. Thanks to the Supreme Court, Bush managed to get one of the slightly less than 3 million (net) jobs created during his eight years in office. That's 375,000 jobs a year, the most pitiful record since 1939 when the Bureau of Labor Statistics started collecting the numbers.

Not just the worst record ever, mind you. But far worse. During Dwight Eisenhower's two terms, only 438,000 jobs were generated annually. But the population was half what it is now. During Bill Clinton's two terms, 2.9 million jobs were generated each year.

Some critics will argue that these are worthless statistics because Presidents don't have much to do with creating jobs. If you guessed that most of these critics are Republicans, you'd be right. And if you guessed that they gleefully report the news and take credit if job creation is going well when one of their own is in the White House, you'd be right again. We heard a lot of that glee in the second half of Ronald Regan's presidency, for instance. But job creation doesn't usually do too well when one of their own is in the White House. All the more reason for them to downplay the prosperity of periods when the President is a Democrat.

Check it out. In the past 64 years, net job creation when Democrats were President totaled 57.5 million jobs. When a Republicans were, net job creation totaled 36.2 million jobs. But even that stark difference doesn't show the the whole picture. Republicans held the Presidency for 36 of those years, meaning they accounted for an average of just over 1 million jobs generated per year. The Democrats for just over 2 million jobs a year.

That's right, average annual job creation under Democratic presidencies since 1944 has been twice as good as under Republicans. Is this correlation mere coincidence?

If you're a young whippersnapper who considers the Truman and Johnson and Nixon years irrelevant ancient history, then just take note that during the terms of the last Democratic President, Bill Clinton, 23 million net jobs were generated. That was a million and a half more than under Bush Jr., Bush Sr., and Ronald Reagan combined. More jobs in less than half the time.

There is, of course, the matter of the quality of jobs that have been created in the past two or three decades as compared with jobs created before then. But that's a topic for another discussion.

Mister Bush, who strolled into office with an official 4.2% unemployment rate will be leaving town with a 7.2% rate. But both those figures - reflecting the official rate that 99% of the media report - are bogus. Since 1994, that official rate is what the BLS has called U3.

global warming is a big joke just like deregulation of the banking and loan industries were:

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cyprus runs the risk of desertification by the end of this century as it feels the brunt of climate change and drought, an expert warned Friday.

Studies project a rise in summer temperatures on the east Mediterranean island of between two and four degrees this century, compared to the 1960 to 1990 reference periods, Professor Manfred Lange, a geophysicist, said in an interview.

"I think that there is a very definite potential for dramatically increasing desertification," said Lange, director of the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center at the non-profit Cyprus Institute.

By the end of this century, Cyprus can expect an extra two months of days with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees centigrade (95 Fahrenheit) on top of the present summer months of June, July and August, Lange said.

There is also likely to be less rainfall and increased evaporation because of higher temperatures.

"Cyprus will in fact become more like Abu Dhabi or other states that we know because there is just not enough water," he said.

Cyprus now uses energy-intensive desalination to meet some of its water requirements, while its population of around one million live with rationing and a permanent hosepipe ban. Lange said enforcement must be stringent.

"People want water but if you want to avert desertification, we need to let nature have its share," he said, adding that while climate change could be slowed, it could not be reversed.

The Cyprus Institute is examining the use of concentrated solar power to co-generate electricity and potable water through desalination, technology Lange said could be used elsewhere.

"Cyprus could become somewhat of a showcase for this kind of technology and could develop an industry that would indeed then offer to market these devices to neighboring countries," he said.

Good morning, all.

Here's some good advice...

Op-Ed Columnist
Ideas for Obama

By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: January 11, 2009

Last week President-elect Barack Obama was asked to respond to critics who say that his stimulus plan won’t do enough to help the economy. Mr. Obama answered that he wants to hear ideas about “how to spend money efficiently and effectively to jump-start the economy.”

O.K., I’ll bite — although as I’ll explain shortly, the “jump-start” metaphor is part of the problem.

...So my advice to the Obama team is to scrap the business tax cuts, and, more important, to deal with the threat of doing too little by doing more. And the way to do more is to stop talking about jump-starts and look more broadly at the possibilities for government investment...

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/12/opinion/12krugman.html?_r=3&ref=opinion

May I add that maybe it's time to ask people to sacrifice? Let's drop the payroll deduction tax cut for everyone except the lowest paid workers and use it for kids seeking higher education and skills training.

We need to look out for the long-term. People expect their President-Elect to ask them to act in a way that will turn things around again in this country not just jump-start the same cycle of greed that got us where we are today.

Gotta run. later.

Sandy, Obama directly challenged Krugman to get specific with his criticism. It would seem that Krugman did get specific as did Democratic Senators. The business cuts are going to be changed:

Big changes to Obama stimulus plan

Emerging from a two-hour meeting in the Capitol with Obama advisers Lawrence Summers and Jason Furman, Senate Democrats praised the President-elect's team for agreeing to make changes to its stimulus proposal based off of concerns senators raised last week at a meeting with the president-elect’s senior aides.

The Obama team told about 35 Senate Democrats gathered at Sunday’s meeting that it would grow the size of an energy-tax incentive package and modify proposed tax credits for individuals and for businesses that hire new employees, according to meeting attendees. Also, with lawmakers raising concerns that the first half of the $700 billion of the financial rescue law was badly mismanaged, Obama’s team signaled it would lay out precisely how it would spend the second half of that package, which Congress is expected to consider as soon as this week.

“It’s very clear they’ve listened, they’ve heard and that they’re moving to respond,” said Sen. Kent Conrad, chairman of the Budget Committee, who questioned previously whether the tax credits in the stimulus package were enough to encourage new jobs. “It was very, very healthy. They’re not defensive, not arguing back, they’re listening, they’re attempting to hear and they’re responding.”

Obama Plans to Keep Estate Tax

Democrats Want to Freeze Levy at Current Levels Instead of Letting It Expire Next Year
By JONATHAN WEISMAN

President-elect Barack Obama and congressional leaders plan to move soon to block the estate tax from disappearing in 2010, suggesting the levy might outlive the "Death Tax Repeal" movement that has tried mightily to kill it.

The Democratic stance on the estate tax contrasts with Mr. Obama's reluctance to press forward with his campaign pledge to raise income-tax rates on top earners, which he worries could have an adverse economic impact during a recession.
[Obama Plans to Keep Estate Tax]

But Democrats are determined to act quickly to prevent the estate tax's scheduled repeal. Elimination of the levy on big inheritances was approved by Congress under President George W. Bush in 2001, with rollbacks phased in slowly and its full elimination slated to take effect next year.

Funny, we haven't seen him try and act like the cowboy is some time. Must be the fact he is dying to get off that Ranch he had to pretend he was just one of the boys on, and get back to the city, where there is a bar on every corner !

Bush Gives Advice To The GOP

It would seem a bit counterintuitive for the GOP to take political advice from the man that drove it to its current state of disrepair and minority status. But George W. Bush offered a bit of sage analysis during an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

Acknowledging the cyclical nature of the political process, the president urged his party to abandon litmus tests and be more inclusive on policy issues, specifically immigration.

"Look, obviously we got whipped in 2008 and there will be a new wave of leadership arriving on the scene," Bush told Fox's Brit Hume. "But it's very important for our party not to narrow its focus, not to become so inward looking that we drive people away from a philosophy that is compassionate and decent and I -- my call for our party is to be open-minded about different people's opinions. We shouldn't have litmus tests whether or not you are a Republican. And we should be open-minded about big issues like immigration reform. Because if they're viewed anti somebody, if the party is viewed as anti-immigrant, then another fellow may say, well if they're against the immigrant, then they may be against me. We have to be a party FOR a better future."

Be open minded! How ironic coming from the most close minded President ever.

Hey right wing nuts, you still won't acknowledge that you lost the election. The nation has rejected right wing nuttism:

YOU LOST THE ELECTION

YOU LOST IT BAD

GET OVER IT

No one "mis-underestimated" Bush. We all know that he lived up to being the worse ever.

Thanks PAMB !

Thanks for the perspective of Neve Gordon, Ben Gurion University, on Israel's War in Gaza.

Note - Israel now has "Joe the War Correspondent" to give us a perspective on the war. This is tantamount to Sarah Palin giving us her knowledge of foreign affairs. It is laughable, if the situation was not so tragic. It is an insult to our nation on the part of Israel - who thinks we have all dumbed down just because of GW's reign...

Below is a link to Rabbi Michael Lerner who thinks Israel has taken the wrong approach.

Coleman Election Challenge: Minnesotans Oppose

A majority of Minnesotans disagree with Norm Coleman's decision to contest the results of the state's Senate election, a new poll shows.

Yet another Republican that just can't acknowledge that he lost the election.

Hey Normy, you lost. Get over it!

Big Al Franken will be the next Senator from Minnesota. He is going to be seated. Minnesotans will just love having two Democratic Senators.

Here is the link to Rabbi Michael Lerner on Gaza, once again - I see that the former link that I posted will take you only to the Huffington Post. It as also worth reading.

RJ, I smile and smile as I watch the increasingly shrill vitriol and vile comments from the trolls, as the last days of Bush come to an end, and the Obama era starts !

GAWD, talk about throw-up in the back of their throats! They are swimming in anger and hatred!

Let me end this era with this.

To Bush and the people who voted for him TWICE:

This country's financial disaster is on your hands.

The death of 4229 US troops is on your hands

30,000+ US troops with limbs and eyes gone, brain damage, PSTD, , this too is on your hands.

The fact that the US borders and ports are still not protected, is on your hands. the next attack will belong to you.

The fact that a city like New Orleans did not have money given to it, to fix it levees, etc and is now still in destruction, is on yuor hands.

The fact that 8 years of no stem cell research of embryos which have since been flushed down the toilet, and the people with disease that could have been saved is all on your hands.

The fact that your Mothers, wives, daughters, granddaughters have had their civil rights cut way way back to 100 years ago.

Worker rights have been terminated.

USA world image is one of disrespect and hatred, thanks to you.

the US dollar is worthless, thanks to you.

The deficit is largest in US history, thanks to you.

The Middle East is a total disaster, thanks to you.

The number of people with no jobs, the companies that have downsized or moved out of country is all thanks to you.

So, I hope there is at least one of you, that has the integrity to admit that you made a huge mistake and you share the blame for where this country is today! Because it is you, who made this all possible !

PRAY real hard that Obama is able to turn this around. this took 8 years in the making of this destruction----it will take a very long time to get us back out !

ahahahahaha, How quick they are to call anyone who DARES to criticize Israel and it's hawkish, aggressive actions,----- anti-semitic! They love to play that card, because they have NO EXCUSE for it. I personally could care less if the people in Israel were Roman Orthodox Catholics, or Buddists ! Aggression by a country is not right ! (And enough of that bull crap where they are merely defending themselves. They could have ended that long ago, if they pulled their bulldozers and cement walls down.)

Sheesh, German, you are such a joke! Hitler would have LOVED you. He went after the easily manipulated, screwballs to join his regime!

Like anybody here should take The Light Brigade seriously !!! They even claim they were past Party Builder people who got erased! Talk about your sour grapes !

Matt Ortega warned Party Builder PUMA and other haters on there, that he would not tolerate any bullshit !

One More Thing
By Matt Ortega - Aug 4th, 2008 at 5:19 pm EDT
Spreading smears about Democrats will be removed immediately. This is "PartyBuilder," not "Split Up the Party So Republicans Can Continue to Ruin Things."

By Matt Ortega - Aug 4th, 2008 at 3:52 pm EDT
Just an FYI -- I will not tolerate any personal attacks on others. Telling others that you will "stuff" something up them followed by expletives, and comments or posts of that nature, will be dealt with swiftly.

I've been getting a lot of email about it including a few phone calls. I prefer not deleting content and removing profiles, but I will not tolerate the disgusting comments that I have seen, the personal attacks flung around, etc.

Reasonable people can and will disagree, but the epithets thrown around will not be let go. That is not debate. Our party is better than that.

So shove your crap back up your butt where you pulled it out of ! Just because YOUR filth, racism, homophobia , and liberal attacks get erased, don't try and make this blog into some kind of conspiracy to rid the blog of party dissenters !!!!!!!!! You don;'t like it, then find a blog in Germany where they share your views ! (ooops, I don't think there is another single German who shares your views!)
