DNC Applauds President for Signing Children’s Health Insurance Bill

February 4, 2009

Democratic National Committee Executive Director Jennifer O’Malley Dillon released the following statement after President Barack Obama signed the children’s health insurance bill passed with the help of Democratic members of Congress:

“After President Obama’s signing of the children’s health insurance bill today, 11 million American children will be able to get the health care they need. No child in this country should have to go without the doctors’ visits they need to stay well or the medicine they need when they’re sick. Yet for years Republicans in Washington stood in the way of kids in Richmond, Kansas City, Phoenix, and all across the country, whose parents could not afford to get them the health care they deserve.

“Today, President Obama and the Democrats in Congress who worked tirelessly to pass this bill changed all that. This important legislation means that parents won’t have to choose between a hospital visit and a mortgage payment. Health care is a fundamental right, and no child should have to go without it. And we have taken a major step forward in repairing our broken health care system. But more must be done. In the coming weeks and months, President Obama and Democratic members of Congress will continue to fight for all of America’s families who still can’t afford health care. I hope that Republicans will join our Party in fighting for America’s families as we work to provide health insurance to every single American family who needs it.”
