House Passes the President's Economic Stimulus Package

Posted by Matt Ortega on February 13, 2009 at 03:03 PM

President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package cleared the House on a 246-183 vote. Republicans, however, continued their "Just Say No" campaign. House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller (D-Martinez, Calif.) spoke about the Republican strategy on the House floor:

Miller really told off the GOP - party of drug addict limbaugh, party of zero, party of NO. The GOP are a disgrace. They failed to be bipartisan; not Obama, not the Democratic Party.

I am glad that Miller stood up for the American people. Boehner, Cantor, Steele, and Limbaugh are the fall guys for the Republican Party. President Obama is trying to reach across the aisle to the Republicans but the Republicans are just saying "no". The Republican party is just about tax cuts and the Democratic party is working to help Americans stay in their homes, keep their jobs, have better health care, and providing a bright future for our children and grandchildren. As an Ohioan, I am disappointed in my representatives and senators for voting against the economic stimulus package. There was only one congress person who voted for the economic stimulus package from my state of Ohio and that was Senator Sherrod Brown. When Representative Mike Turner is up for re-election in four years, I am not voting for him.

Well since I’ve lost about $60,000 so far in this government give to the rich scheme, That as a retiree, who cant afford it; I think I’ll take my $13.00 a week after taxes of Omama bail out package for Joe Average, and go put a down payment on a steak.

The only thing this stimulus package wants to make me do besides puking; is kick this anti-American pig, along with the rest of the dumbocrats cheering him on; out of the country!

Oh well; since Obama killed the buy America clause in his stimulus package, it probably wouldn’t have been an American steak anyway, and he saved me from Mad Cow disease!

Apparently Obama’s deal is, that Joe Average gets $13.00 a week, and later will have to give back $50.00 a week to pay for it, while the rich who caused this meltdown gets to keep billions. There is no mention of any of these people going to jail, even after they got our money, and threw $400,000 spa parties, $86,000 hunting trips, and bought $1,300 trash cans while spending millions redoing their offices.

There is no mention of making some of the richest people in this country pay back anything, even though they committed fraud by telling us all their companies were solvent, so keep investing!

There is no accountability as to where the first billions went, so Obama’s brilliant plan is to give them more! Excellent job of screwing the little people Obama!

Now I know why I became an independent voter after being a 40-year democrat. Only a total idiot would continue to support people who sell them out!

Even Obama says gambling with our money may not work? Say what stupid? That’s just why we are in this mess; bankers gambled with someone else’s money, and lost it you dumb ass…duh!

The democrats should change the name of this party to illegal aliens Inc., or Wal-Mart’s; it doesn’t matter which, because neither would be working for us!

Oh well, after this pig gets done pissing away the rest of my life’s savings; maybe I could go look for an American job; but since this pig wants to kill the E-Verify program too, I would probably have to learn Spanish first, because he and the rest of the dumbocrats don’t seem to like hiring America very much!

We kicked the republicans out on the promise of change; but the only change I’m seeing is, who’s selling us out to big business, and the world!

Hey, who could possibly be against hiring Americans, and buying American, when 11-million Americans are unemployed? Would it be terrorists, Mexico, China, big business, dumbocrats? What low life; would sell out their fellow Americans?

Try the Democratic Party; or is it the Mexican Party; the help the rich party; the screw Americans party?

Wake up people, and stop supporting these dirt bags. Our only hope is to kick all of them out of office, both republicants, and dumbocrats, and start over again, because none of them are working for us anymore!

I don't understand why more people are not concerned with what is in the stimulas package and why it was rushed through. Too much spending!!!! My guess the reason republicans did not vote for it was because they did not help write it and wern't asked.

Smoke, I have lost money in the stock market to and I am a NOT dumb democrat. The reason that this country is losing jobs is that former President Bush thought it would be cheaper to send jobs overseas then keeping jobs in the US. I am NOT an illegal alien nor am I an idiot. FYI-former President Bush's presidency cost the American a couple of trillion dollars. You really should wake up and open your eyes to see what is really going on in this country. This country was going down hill after September 11, 2001 and we are in a deep hole that President Obama is trying to get us out of. My sisters and my dad voted for President Obama and are you calling them dumb democrats. The Republican party just want to give tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations for sending jobs overseas where President Obama is trying to keep jobs in the US.

My fear is that we are being led into a socialist environment. Big government, and lots of dept. Redistibution of wealth is not the answer. We need leaders. Has anyone took a hard look at socialized health care. Give it a few years and you will see what I mean. We need an LBJ type democrat in the whitehouse. I hope I am wrong, but I am scared that we jumped into a pit by passing the stimulus package. I would like for someone to help me see how this is going to benefit us.

In the stimulus package, can someone please tell me what "green" tax credits were passed for the homeowner or hybrid driver? Previously, there were tax credits for insulation, upgrades to solar, ... however, they expired in 2007. I kept hoping that they would be revived.

All you do it TAKE, TAKE, TAKE from the taxpayers. Typical Republicanism:

Having It Both Ways: Republicans Take Credit for 'Pork' - In Stimulus Bill They Opposed
By Susie Madrak Sunday Feb 15, 2009 6:00pm

Of course, no one's really surprised, right? I just wonder if the Democratic communications staffers will kick into gear and capitalize on this kind of story:

WASHINGTON — Rep. John Mica was gushing after the House of Representatives voted Friday to pass the big stimulus plan.

"I applaud President Obama's recognition that high-speed rail should be part of America's future," the Florida Republican beamed in a press release.

Yet Mica had just joined every other GOP House member in voting against the $787.2 billion economic recovery plan.

Republicans echoed their party line over and over during the debate: "This bill is loaded with wasteful deficit spending on the majority's favorite government programs," as Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., put it.

But Mica wasn't alone in touting what he saw as the bill's virtues. Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, also had nice things to say in a press release.

Young boasted that he "won a victory for the Alaska Native contracting program and other Alaska small business owners last night in H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

One provision would have made it harder for minority businesses to win contracts, and Young explained that he "worked with members on the other side of the aisle to make the case for these programs, and was able to get the provision pulled from the bill."

Yet later in the day Young — who recently told McClatchy that he would've included earmarks, or local projects, in the bill if it had been permitted — issued another statement blasting the overall measure.

"This bill was not a stimulus bill. It was a vehicle for pet projects, and that's wrong," he protested.

Cranky McCain is back and mad at Obama
Joe Sudbay

Seriously, who cares what John McCain thinks?

The Arizona Republican says the $787 billion measure will create what he calls "generational theft" — huge federal deficits for years to come.

McCain, who lost the presidential race to Obama, says the president is backtracking on promises of bipartisanship. McCain is not happy with the process that led to passage of the stimulus bill. He calls it a bad beginning to Obama's presidency.

McCain acknowledges that Republicans excluded Democrats when the GOP held power on Capitol Hill. But he says Obama had promised to work differently.

McCain offers this advice: "Let's start over now and sit down together."

Start where? Let's review: John McCain was one of 36 Republicans to vote for Senator Jim DeMint's amendment to remove ALL spending from the economic recovery package. Krugman, who called the GOP Senators who voted against the stimulus package "the crazy 36" noted that DeMint's amendment:

would have replaced $800 billion of stimulus with $3.1 trillion of non-stimulative tax cuts. These, by the way, are the same people now accusing Obama of engaging in “generational theft.”

Crazy. But, that's John McCain's terminology.

How can Obama negotiate with people who really are that extreme? It was actually the Republicans, including McCain, who excluded themselves from the deliberations because of their adherence to Bush's failed economic philosophy.

And, lest we forget, John McCain never really got the magnitude of the economic crisis, which is one reason that he isn't president. Remember, McCain still thought the fundamentals of our economy were strong on September 15, 2008, the day we learned Lehman Brothers disappeared:
===============================================
McCain doesn't know the meaning of bipartisan.

It's common knowledge that we sold chemical weapons to Saddam to use against Iran. Then Saddam used the same chemical weapons against the Kurds. That is messaging. That is the message, at least one of the messages, that Democrats need to put out there now, and up until the next election. Every Republican member of Congress, save three, voted against the biggest tax cut in American history. And in Republican-think, you could even say that they voted to increase your taxes (increase them beyond what they'd be if the legislation were passed). It's what they'd do. It's what Karl Rove would do. It's time we started messaging to win.

It's not a matter of whether anyone liked Saddam or Stalin. I would bet that Rumsfeld didn't care for Saddam nor did FDR care for Stalin.

It's a matter of if their policy made sense. It's obvious that we didn't need to intervene in Saddam's war against Iran and that there was negative outcomes when Saddam used the weapons we gave him against the Kurds. It's also obvious that forming an alliance with Russia against Nazi Germany made sense. Hmmm maybe the right wing nuts would rather have lost the war to the Nazis?

When he invaded Iraq, he was trying to pay daddy back. He is one of the biggest Wimps in the history of this country. He would not even make a good cartoon character little lone Decider in Chief that a crooked Supreme Court appointed him to that position. He lost the popular vote by 500,000 votes. Good afternoon, all.

I've come to believe that their is a different divide in politic than the one we are always being told: the Left, Right, and Center.

imho, there are two other groups: one between Left and Center and one between Right and Center who are the real shakers and movers. This is where most Americans reside. For sake of argument, I'll call them Middle Americans.

They both believe in fiscal responsibility and equal opportunity. They are the Independents who use common sense instead of an inflated sense of propriety on the Right or an inflates sense of virtue on the Left. That why the Far Right and Far Left turn off the Independents

The people in the Center just don't have any principles at all and are rank opportunists. They call themselves Republicans or Democrats but they are really out for themselves and their own political careers. Independents have just about had enough of their crap. They are easily bribed by whoever on the Right or Left is in power.

It became evident as I've been canvassing in the last five years that the Independents were ready for a really big Change. They're sick of the bickering between the ideals of the Left and Right and would just like to hang all the Centralists.

Obama tapped into the discontent of the Independents. He circumvented Clinton during the primaries and McCain in the general because the leaned toward the Center. The Far Left and Far Right as per Ralph Nader and Ron Paul became isolated from both traditional parties and most voters.

The Bushies forced this alienation of the Center by claiming to be Far Right when they operated Center. What a shame for the George Wills and Rush Limbaughs of this world. It gave the Independents a real chance to see how conservative ideals just don't work.

Obama is in for one frickin' sucessful ride in the next eight years if I'm right.

Carter was a leftist and a pussy, the people didn't know that when they elected him. Then when he morphed into a commie and demonstrated his weakness in dealing or not dealing with Iran the people rejected him big time in favor of Ronald Reagan. So goes it with Obama only more so.

Obama has no personal traits or talents that would lead one to believe he is Presidential. He got elected because of his personality by millions of swooning moonbeams. The fact that the Republicans did not nominate a viable candidate certainly helped as well.

His weakness, his penchant for communism and his constant pessimism will wear on the people over the next few years. Another terrorist attack will be blamed on him for whatever Bush was doing that he canceled.

In the mean time Sarah will be doing all the right things to prepare herself for the 2012 campaign and her confidence, competence and cheerful optimism will propel her to the Presidency by a landslide. A vast landslide greater than Reagan walloped Carter. Probably more in tune with Reagan's shellacking of Mondaled!

The Democratic Party supports President Barack Hussein Obama because he is a competent leader, who admits to his mistakes

Benji on February 16, 2009 at 05:11 PM

Benji,

Sorry I had to attend to something and couldn't get back to you...and now that Dan has left, it's even a better time to talk.

That anger at the liberals is what got us into a quandary in the first place. Rove used it "liberally" to paint all Democrats as radicals. T'aint so. We have always skewed toward both the left and the right on issues...just as most Americans do. I guess the term progressive is a more accurate term of whom and what we Democrats are.

We work. We save. We raise families. We respect others. We believe in equal opportunity. We believe in living modestly and only borrowing for big purchases and have a payment schedule in mind before we do it. We live within our means. We seek peace but will defend our country to the death. We understand the importance of the Bill of Rights (even the right to bear arms). We do not discriminate nor feel superior.

I've come to realize that many blue dogs believe in these same things as I do even though they are from the conservative side while I tend to be from the liberal side of the spectrum.

Think of it as me on one side of the pendulum and BobHawkVA on the other side. We can work together and respect each other even though we don't always agree on some issues.

Obama has read the situation perfectly. He skews from both sides because that is the way he grew up. He was forced to live in two worlds. His background made him the perfect Democratic candidate. He understands why mistakes will be made and knows he has to admit them to find a better solution to problems.

The Republicans would like to think they have a similar candidate in Bobby Jindal, but he doesn't have that important tolerance factor for others...he thinks like the Far Right. He's still got that Republican bigotry thing going toward gays and women. He's radical Far Right at heart. He thinks his ideology is perfect and can't fail. If he tries to present himself as anything else in the future, younger voters will sense the deceit immediately and reject him as a hypocrite.

Obama, however, fits the solid profile of a Middle American. He thinks with both sides of the political spectrum's brain. He really does. He is both sides of the traditional American coin.

And he's committed to never giving up on either side. Obama can pull support from both sides at one time because of those shared values from those on the Middle Left and Middle Right. And he can chastise both sides for not cooperating for the Common Good, too.

By not being from the Center, Obama doesn't have to compromise to special interests, lobbyists, or campaign donors. He can appeal to the majority. And he can adhere to what is in the best interests of all Americans above his Party.

"A house divided can't stand" the man said. No wonder Obama admires Lincoln so much.

Sorry for the long post, but I think it's important that we realize how lucky we are to have found our way back to common ground with all Americans...and how it happened.

It is important to look back to the source of our problems and two of our biggest go straight back to Jimmy frickin Carter. His Community Reinvestment act is the source of the housing problems and his failure to confront Iran when they trashed our embassy and held the staff hostage is what convinced the terrorists that America could be pushed around. And they had been doing it ever since until George W Bush responded.

chassie,

imho, Clinton governed from the Center and it forced him to go along with a lot of things that hurt this country.

In his efforts to get something done without a Democratic Congress, he went along with the Republicans on special interest legislation like NAFTA that was unfair to the American worker and American businesses. And similarly, he signed those deregulation bills that hurt the American consumer. Both decisions hurt our economy.

Clinton forgot that as president of all the people he was suppose to protect the majority. He had the veto but neglected to use it when it was really important. I believe he is a good man. But he got caught up in thinking about his legacy instead of his duty.

We are all flawed human beings. We make mistakes. Perhaps it's time for Clinton to start facing his?

I think Hillary faced them in her primary campaign and became a stronger candidate because of it. It's why so many Democrats began to genuinely see her as a leader and how she overcame that horrible hatred that the Republicans had bestowed on her for so many years among the Reagan Democrats.

Secretary Clinton could become a role model for Bill, if he ever figures it out.

Obama Spending $Millions to Import Palestinians

Your tax dollar is hard at work, importing Palestinian victims of Israeli aggression so that we can set up our own Gaza Strips. From the office of the Moonbat Messiah:

Memorandum for the Secretary of State

By the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, including section 2(c)(1) of the Migration and Refugee Assistance Act of 1962 (the "Act"), as amended (22 U.S.C. 2601), I hereby determine, pursuant to section 2(c)(1) of the Act, that it is important to the national interest to furnish assistance under the Act in an amount not to exceed $20.3 million from the United States Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund for the purpose of meeting unexpected and urgent refugee and migration needs, including by contributions to international, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations and payment of administrative expenses of Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the Department of State, related to humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees and conflict victims in Gaza.

If Palestinians would elect Hamas, they should be a highly reliable Democrat constituency — especially once they get their mouths on the teat of the recently supercharged welfare state. Why should Israelis have all the thrill and excitement of watching suicide bombers go off on crowded streets?

13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority,

14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right.

15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.

One too many hours spent getting harassed at the checkpoints in the was they put up around Gaza, to deal with the terrorists created by displaced people from the bulldozers. One too many Palestinians held in their prison for no apparent reason other than intimidation. But that's how it goes when your belief is that all who are not the right kind of race are your natural enemy. But never mind any of this - role the tape with the rockets...that way we can see what we have been told to believe...like 9/11.....you can't have a large military industrial complex without an enemy...

Conyers Goes After Sheriff Joe

Members of the previous administration aren't the only ones the corrupt leftist thug and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers wants taken to task for countermoonbattery. Now he's after Joe Arpaio, the Arizona sheriff who has heroically stood up to liberal quislings as he defends the Phoenix area from Mexican colonization.

Specifically, Arpaio is charged with racism, because being mainly Hispanic, the invaders he rounds up are above the laws of the white man. This is the equivalent of charging Douglas MacArthur with racism for fighting Asians.

Surprisingly, the federal government has actually allowed Arpaio to do his job and arrest the illegal aliens who are turning Phoenix into a war zone. But with Crappy Nappy Napolitano in charge of Homeland Security and Conyers whining to the skeevy pro-terrorist Attorney General about Sheriff Joe, this policy is unlikely to last.

Essie, Chassie,

We have a wood pellet stove with a large window so we can see the fire. It does a pretty good job heating the house. In the midwest they have corn stoves which burn dried corn. The stoves seem pretty efficient.

The only work involved is carrying in the 40 pound bags of pellets and pouring them in the stove. The stove goes through a bag in two days keeping it on low. It has a built-in fan. My builder put a vent in the ceiling of the room and bought some of that cheep flexible aluminum foil pipe and a blower and heats other parts of the house.

Check it out.

162
Johne on February 16, 2009 at 08:35 PM

I'll take your concern into consideration, marv. it will be a couple of years, and we may change our minds.

here's one for the road to slumber:

Isaiah 28:16
So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed."

Whenever God calls us into a consecrated life, it is made up of four distinct stages. Christ often compared this process to building a house. First, we must prepare to build by laying a foundation. That foundation is none other than Jesus Christ Himself. Any foundation other than Christ will not stand.

Second, as we enter a walk of faith with God, He allows each of us to experience trials, testings, miracles, and challenges in life that are designed to provide "faith experiences" that demonstrate tangible evidences of His work in our life: Moses' burning-bush experience, Peter's walk on the water, Joshua's parting of the Jordan River. These experiences built the faith of these people. The depth and width of our calling is directly proportional to the faith experiences He allows in each of our lives. If God plans an international ministry with you, chances are you will experience a higher degree of faith experiences compared to another. The reason is, you will need to look on these to ensure your calling and provide testimony to His work in your life.

The third stage deals with motives. "All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord" (Prov. 16:2). What is the motive behind my actions? Is it only financial accumulation? Is it to gain control? Is it to create independence? The primary motive must be God's leading you to take such an action-it must be obedience. These other factors must be by-products of the decision.

Finally, we are prepared to take action. Here we must ask, "Do we have the skill, quality, and ability to enter into this activity?" So often we have not trained ourselves adequately to be successful in our endeavor. You would never want someone working on your teeth who had not been trained and certified as a dentist.

Before you begin your next project, ask yourself these four questions. What is the foundation this project is based on? What experiences has God demonstrated in my life that indicate His involvement? What is my motive for entering this activity? Do I have the skill, quality, and ability to accomplish the task? Answering these questions will tell you whether God will bless your activity.

Enjoy the evening, everyone.

Government By Crazy People

By Alan Caruba

It is one thing to be mistaken when developing and administering government programs. It is another to be nuts. “The trains carrying coal to power plants are death trains. Coal-fired plants are factories of death.”

Would someone please get the net and throw it over Dr. James Hansen, the Director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies? The above is a direct quote. Recently, Dr. Hansen, the man who has the dubious distinction of predicting back in 1988 to a congressional committee that we were all going to die from global warming, had an insane diatribe published in The Guardian, a liberal newspaper published in Great Britain.

“A year ago, I wrote to Gordon Brown asking him to place a moratorium on new coal-fired plants in Britain,” wrote Dr. Hansen. “I have asked the same of Angela Merkel, Barack Obama, Kevin Rudd, and other leaders. The reason is this - coal is the single greatest threat to civilization and all life on our planet.”

On January 24, I posted a commentary, ”Coal, Glorious Coal”, on the website of The National Anxiety Center, my clearinghouse for information about “scare campaigns” designed to influence public policy and opinion. You can read it here. I noted that Stephen Chu, the Secretary of Energy, is on record saying, “Coal is my worst nightmare” and pointed out that coal provides over 50% of all the electricity in the nation. At least Dr. Chu isn’t writing to the leaders of Europe telling them that the entire human race is doomed if they dont shut down all the coal-fired plants producing electricity. Well, not yet. But Dr. Hansen is.

By contrast, Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr. is the former director of the University of Colorado’s Center for Science and Technology Policy Research and an associate professor of environmental studies. He is a scientist with the Environmental and Societal Impacts Group at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Together with Radford Byerly, Jr, he was the editor of ”Prediction: Science, Decision Making, and the Future of Nature” published in 2000. His PhD is in political science.

“Hansen’s argument includes,” noted Dr. Pielke, “his complaint that policy makers have not followed his advice, which apparently, Hansen believes should take precedent over all other views. Indeed, he dismisses the views of the public as being too poorly informed, too distracted or unsophisticated to contribute to decision making on the climate issue.”

Meanwhile, poll after poll, indicates that the public has concluded in ever growing numbers that global warming is pure hogwash. I recently wrote about a paper by a leading authority on “Narcissistic Personality Disorder” who concluded that President Obama gives ample evidence of it. One might conclude that Dr. Hansen has the same problem. Indeed, Dr. Pielke said that Hansen’s commentary “swerves from scientific authoritarianism to megalomania.” Anyone who can write that “Coal is the single greatest threat to civilization and all life on our planet” is surely irrational and in need of the same sequestration that Hansen wants for carbon dioxide.

The problem for the rest of us is that people like Dr. Hansen, Secretary Chu, and all of President Obama’s science and environmental advisers hold genuinely crazy ideas about coal, oil, solar and wind energy, biofuels, and global warming that will be implemented as government policy and law.

It is worth noting that perhaps the looniest of the whole bunch, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recently said, “The new Administration is stopping the headlong rush to open offshore areas of drilling”, commending Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar for “wisely initiating a review of the potential that offshore renewable energy projects can proceed in an environmentally-responsible manner.” In other words, the 85% of the nations continental coast will continue to remain unexplored and untapped for the billions of barrels of oil and natural gas it is estimated to contain.

Try to square this up with the Administration’s claim that it wants America to become more “energy independent.” You can’t because the two statements are diametrically opposed. That’s why only crazy people can keep two such opposing ideas in their heads at the same time. Meanwhile, absolutely nothing stopped the “headlong rush” to pass the most massive spending bill in the history of the nation with Speaker Pelosi leading the charge along with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. This isn’t the way our government is supposed to function. This is the real threat to the lives and welfare of all Americans.

Global Cooling Continues

By James M. Taylor,

Continuing a decade-long trend of declining global temperatures, the year 2008 was significantly colder than 2007, and global temperatures for the year were below the average over the past 30 years. The global temperature data, reported by NASA satellite-based temperature measurements, refuted predictions 2008 would be one of the warmest on record.

Data show 2008 ranked 14th coldest of the 30 years measured by NASA satellite instruments since they were first launched in 1979. It was the coldest year since 2000.

Satellite Precision

NASA satellites uniformly monitor the Earths lower atmosphere, which greenhouse gas theory predicts will show the first and most significant effects of human-caused global warming. The satellite-based measurements are uncorrupted by urban heat islands and localized land-use changes that often taint records from surface temperature stations, giving false indications of warming.

The uncorrupted satellite-based temperature measurements refute surface temperature station data finding 2008 to be one of the top 10 warmest years on record. “How can an ‘average year’ in one database appear to be a [top 10] warmest year in another?” asked meteorologist Joe D’Aleo on his International Climate and Environmental Change Assessment Project Web site.

“The global databases of [surface station reports] are all contaminated by urbanization, major station dropout, missing data, bad siting, instruments with known warm biases being introduced without adjustment, and black-box and man-made adjustments designed to maximize [reported] warming,” explained D’Aleo.

Warming Trend Overstated

“The substantial and continuing La Nina cooled the Earth quite a bit in 2008, to the point that it was slightly below the 30-year average [1979-2008] but slightly above the 20-year average [1979-1998],” said John Christy, distinguished professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).

“From research we have published, and more to come soon, we find that land surface air temperatures misrepresent the actual temperature changes in the deep atmosphere - where the greenhouse effect is anticipated to have its easiest impact to measure. Surface thermometers are affected by many influences, especially surface development, so the bulk atmospheric measurements from satellites offer a straightforward indicator of how much heat is or is not accumulating in the air, for whatever reason,” Christy explained.

“Recent published evidence also supports the long-term trends of UAH as being fairly precise, so the observed rate of warming is noticeably less than that projected by the IPCC ‘Best Estimate’ model simulations which, we hypothesize, are too sensitive to CO2 increases,” Christy added.

Evening Fromm,

I think it was Thom Hartman today who said that China is going to start producing a plug-in electric vehicle. It appears that they will start importing them to the U.S.

GM was testing an electric car and had a couple of prototypes driving all over the country testing them.

All of a sudden they announced they were done with the testing and crushed the cars.

How stupid can one corporation get?

We are going to end up importing electric cars from China unless GM, Ford and Chrysler get with it and start pushing electric or Hydrogen cars.

Arnold in California and I believe Washington State is installing Hydrogen stations all over the place and there are Hydrogen vehicles on the road. Why the foot dragging by Detroit.

They deserve to go out of business if they can't produce a car that gets us off the internal combustion engine.

I think it was about twenty years ago or more that some city was using and testing Hydrogen powered buses.

The repukes and the oil companies squelch everything that doesn't sell oil and keep us in endless wars protecting the oil companies.

It is way past time for change. Further production of internal combustion engines should be banned and the repukes told to shove it because they have been blocking government actions that would force Detroit to get into the 21st century.

Tesla in California is producing a plug-in electric car that can go 240 miles without a charge. It would be perfect for a large percentage of Americans. Why aren't they being encouraged? They were going to build a plant in New Mexico but decided to build closer to their headquarters in Silicon Valley in California.

Attack of the Killer Robots

By Eric Stoner

‘You don’t want your defenses to bankrupt you. If it costs $100,000 to defeat a $500 roadside bomb, that doesn’t sound like such a good strategy—as pretty as it may look on YouTube.’

One of the most captivating storylines in science fiction involves a nightmarish vision of the future in which autonomous killer robots turn on their creators and threaten the extinction of the human race. Hollywood blockbusters such as Terminator and The Matrix are versions of this cautionary tale, as was R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), the 1920 Czech play by Karel Capek that marked the first use of the word “robot.”

In May 2007, the U.S. military reached an ominous milestone in the history of warfare—one that took an eerie step toward making this fiction a reality. After more than three years of development, the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division based south of Baghdad, deployed armed ground robots.

Although only three of these weaponized “unmanned systems” have hit Iraq’s streets, to date, National Defense magazine reported in September 2007 that the Army has placed an order for another 80.

A month after the robots arrived in Iraq, they received “urgent material release approval” to allow their use by soldiers in the field. The military, however, appears to be proceeding with caution.

According to a statement by Duane Gotvald, deputy project manager of the Defense Department’s Robotic Systems Joint Project Office, soldiers are using the robots “for surveillance and peacekeeping/guard operations” in Iraq. By all accounts, robots have not fired their weapons in combat since their deployment more than a year and a half ago.

But it is only a matter of time before that line is crossed...

Mechanized militaries, however, put greater emphasis on protecting their own soldiers. Consequently, Lyall and Wilson argue in their study that such forces lack the information necessary to use force discriminately, and therefore, “often inadvertently fuel, rather than suppress, insurgencies.”

Given such findings, deploying armed robots in greater numbers in Iraq or Afghanistan would likely only enflame resistance to the occupation, and, in turn, lead to greater carnage.

To understand this point, put yourself in the shoes of an Iraqi or Afghani. How could seeing a robot with a machine gun rumble down your street or point its weapon at your child elicit any reaction other than one of terror or extreme anger? What would you do under such circumstances? Who would not resist? And how would you know that someone is controlling the robot?...

http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/4243/attack_of_the_killer_robots/

Something is really unnatural about the way this country is approaching the rest of the world.

Not only did we stop using diplomacy, curtail nuclear treaties, and proffer bogus intel at the U.N. as an excuse to invade another country, we are now starting to defend ourselves without any human contact involved.

What must the rest of the world think of these developments which have grown dramatically during the last eight years? Everyone knows we were the first and last to use an atomic bomb. If we continue to experiment with weapons that only kill from afar, does it potentially isolated us from the rest of the civilized world which could see this as an attempt to detach ourselves from responsibility for our actions?

I know President Obama has Secretary Clinton and other diplomats working on the diplomatic front. He has already declared that he wants to renew talks about nuclear proliferation. But the President still has some of Bush's military advisers in control of the Pentagon including Secretary Gates who probably had knowledge in not something to do with authorizing the use of those robots in Iraq...supposedly as an experiment?

Whether Secretary Gates had anything to do with the decision to develop more robotization to our arsenal of military weaponry or not, it most certainly signals that there needs to be a national debate conducted about these humanly-detached weapons. Our government is crossing a line before analyzing whether that is where we as a people really want to go.

Citizens have a responsibility to keep watch over the direction in which their leadership and military move. It is our decision not theirs as to what we do in relation to other countries and how we will be perceived by friend and foe in the future.

It's imperative that American citizens become more involved in the political process and get better informed of what is going many times without our knowledge. It would help tremendously if we had an independent free press investigating what some in the Pentagon has taken great pains to keep secret from us.

The Pentagon developed a huge propaganda machine to divert our attention from what they and the Bush administration was doing. That needs to end immediately.

If we bail out GM some more and they build more crappy little 35 mile per gallon tin cans for $11,000...instead of hydrogen electric hybrids...then we will be still hooked on the internal combustion engine...hello Pakistan...

It is way past time for change. Further production of internal combustion engines should be banned and the repukes told to shove it because they have been blocking government actions that would force Detroit to get into the 21st century...

Electric Hybrids would solve many of the tough issues we face in the 21st century...

It is downright criminal that we have people like rash blimpballs praising hummers and how we have a right to drive gas hogs. After all oil just bubbles up from the center of the earth and there is an endless supply. Yeh right. What a moron.

Then we have the repuke congress giving rich people a tax break if they buy a gas hog hummer...

* * * *

I agree with all of you. It's insane to continue shackling ourselves to a technology that is fading and which making us dependent on Islamic radicals...some of which now have control of a government with over a hundred atomic bombs.

But that is what the oil multinationals are pushing their Republican puppets to do. The GOP is an organization of fools.

195SandyH - I can agree with you on a certain level Sandy, but we still need to have a cutting edge with defense for our own sake. We do not want to fall asleep at the wheel in protecting our country or our own soldiers. But we do not need to use foreign soil as a play ground for our space toys. I'm certain other entity's are working on similar cloaked projects.

They wouldn't give the nation a chance to read and review that dopey Porkulus Bill because It must be done now and there was no time to waste. That was Friday and tomorrow is Tuesday and that is when Obama is going to get around to signing it.

Apparently there were 4 days available for the people to find out what was in that incredibly stupid bill.

Six Reasons Deficits Will Doom The Dems In 2010

Throughout his first term, Obama will be constantly pushing truly massive new spending projects. More banking bailouts, the auto bailout, bailouts for other industries, socialized medicine, pork ridden budgets, global warming funds -- it goes on and on. If Republicans oppose those very same massive spending projects, they can make that the core of their campaign in 2010.

Now, some people would say that won't work for three reasons:

1) The American people don't care about pork projects. It is true that few representatives are ever going to lose a state or a district because they voted for too much spending.

But, and this a big but -- what's good for a particular politician on the micro level can be extremely damaging for a political party on a macro level if the behavior spreads.

Put another way, people don't mind when THEIR representative brings home a "Bridge to Nowhere," but boy do they hate the idea of OTHER PEOPLE benefiting from government largesse.

Moreover, with the Democrats in charge, these big spending bills will inevitably be incredibly wasteful and full of corrupt "one hand washes the other" spending. That sort of obscene corruption and grotesque back scratching certainly isn't going to be what most Americans thought Barack meant when he said he was going to "change the way Washington works" and they will be offended by it.

2) The Republicans have no credibility on deficit spending after the Bush years. The GOP's reputation in this area certainly took a huge, much deserved hit during the Bush years.

However, A) Obama is going to be the biggest spending President in American history by far and B) People are going to pay a lot more attention to what happens in 2009 and 2010 than what happened between 2001-2008. If the GOP continues to oppose these wasteful bills as the Democrats continue to support them, the American people will give credit where credit is due for fiscal conservatism. Do keep in mind though, even if the GOP turns into a party-full of Jim DeMints and John Shadeggs, it will take several months for it to fully sink in with the American public after the poor performance of the Bush years.

3) If the American people really cared about spending, they wouldn't have sided so heavily with the Dems in 2008. The Republicans talked a lot about cutting spending and small government issues throughout the Bush years, but they didn't walk the walk. You can't credibly run as a small government, deficit-cutting party when the government expands under your watch and spending explodes.

Granted, the Democrats were even worse, but you can only say, "We're the lesser of two evils" for so long before the voters decide to test that theory. Test it they did in 2008 and I suspect that quite a few of them are already, less than a month into the Obama administration, regretting their decisions.

In addition, there are three other things worth noting:

4) The American people are deeply suspicious of radical change, particularly if it's not bipartisan. As Barack Obama himself has said, he intends to run "trillion-dollar deficits for years to come." That is a radical and dangerous change for our nation. In fact, that sort of spending could literally become a negative turning point that our country's economy may never truly recover from.

In other words, unless we change course, we will see a day in this country when checks from the federal government won't be worth the paper they're written on and people will need wheelbarrows full of money to buy a loaf of bread. That's the future Barack Obama is creating for our children and if Republicans continue to raise the alarm about this, it will absolutely scare the American people to death -- and with good reason. There are many nations that have been bankrupted by irresponsible government policies and Barack Obama is following in their footsteps.

5) People can understand the problem with deficit spending. There are a lot of political issues the American people have trouble fully wrapping their heads around, but deficit spending is not one of them. Every American understands what it means to operate within a budget and the consequences of running up big bills that you can't pay. They understand that they have to live within their means and the government should as well.

Typically, this issue tends to be potent with the GOP base, but not as much so with the American public. However, with Barack Obama running deficits so large that they would make a Premier of the Soviet Union blanch, the problem will soon be far too big for even the apparatchiks in the mainstream media to deny.

6) With each new spending project, public support for more spending is going to drop further. We've already had TARP, the Big 3 bailout, and now we've passed a stimulus -- and the American people are already getting very, very tired of it. From Rasmussen Reports,

While the Obama Administration is pledging up to $2.5 trillion in support for the troubled U.S. financial system, 56% of Americans oppose giving bankers any additional government money or any guarantees backed by the government.

Twenty percent (20%) support such assistance, and 24% are not sure...

...Fifty-nine percent (59%) say they oppose the $700-billion bank bailout plan that was proposed by the Bush Administration and approved by Congress early last October after the highly publicized failure of Lehman Brothers brought Wall Street's growing problems home to Main Street. Half of that money is being channeled into the new bailout plan.

Twenty percent (20%) say the first bailout plan was a good idea, and 21% are undecided.

The new numbers represent a jump in opposition to the first plan. Forty-five percent (45%) opposed it at the time it was passed, while 30% supported it. A sizable majority expected Wall Street to benefit more than taxpayers from the bailout, but those numbers also are higher now.

The plurality of Americans (46%) say the earlier bailout plan has had no impact on the U.S. economy. Thirty-six percent (36%) think it has made things worse, while just nine percent (9%) say it has helped the economy.

Note that not only do Americans strongly oppose any further bank bailouts, they've become considerably more opposed to the original TARP plan. This is not going to be an exception to the rule; it will be a trend.

That means the Democrats have a choice: continue to compulsively push ever more unpopular spending programs or give up on handing out goodies, which is about 75% of the party's appeal. The smart money would be on the former, not the latter, but either way it's good for the Republican Party.

Summary: We don't know how the economy is going to look in 2010, what all the key issues of the election will be, how popular Obama will be, how well the GOP will work together over the next two years or a number of other things.

However, it has already become very apparent that if the GOP can hold the line on spending, it will not only fire up our base and be good for the country, it will give us an enormous stick with which to savagely beat the Democrats in the 2010 elections.

Obama's double game on dealing with terrorists

Notwithstanding President Obama's inaugural address ("we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals") and his initial executive orders on Guantanamo, interrogations, and CIA secret prisons -- the new president is leaving himself wiggle room on fighting terrorism. In fact, Lake argues that "there are a growing number of reasons to suspect that Obama will not be quite as liberal on these matters as his rhetoric might have suggested [and] his supporters might have hoped. . . "

For example, Obama may have ordered the closing of Gitmo (later on) and suspended all military tribunals there, but that doesn't mean that all the 243 prisoners will end up in civilian courts. Leon Panetta testified at his confirmation hearing that a cabinet-level review of the cases will determine "what prisoners can be tried, what prisoners can be transferred, what do you do with those prisoners who can neither be tried or transferred for some reason and what will happen with them."

Panetta also distanced himself from the impression (created by Obama's rhetoric) that the U.S. will only use interrogation techniques found in the Army Field Manual. Senator Bond, for one, announced that he was supporting Panetta in part because he had "committed to ... exploring the use of enhanced interrogation techniques on high-value detainees that may warrant going beyond the Army Field Manual in certain situations."

Even when it comes to renditions, Lake reports that, in the words of the former CIA general counsel who has worked with the Obama administration, there is no "seismic shift in policy." According to this source, "the United States will send individuals to other states, and, if those states have a questionable record on human rights, then we will not only seek assurances as we have in the past, but. . .be more rigorous on following up on those assurances." In all likelihood, says Lake, this means that we will still send prisoners to jails in Egypt and Jordan.

It is curious that Obama is exaggerating his differences with Republicans on these issues. For one thing, he promised to be a post-partisan who focuses on common ground rather than on what divides. More to the point, President Bush's tough policies for dealing with terrorists was, in the end, perhaps the only major aspect of Bush administration policy that Americans liked.

Obama may be distancing from Bush anti-terrorism policy mainly for purposes of foreign consumption. But if Obama believes that even a sharp break with Bush policy (as opposed to his marginal re-positioning) will cause foreign governments to, say, provide more help in Afghanistan or take Gitmo detainees, he will likely to be quite disappointed. Foreign governments act the way they do based on their perceived interests. Complaints about this or that American policy are merely pretexts and can always be replaced by other excuses.

Good morning all (except right wing nut trolls of course).

GOP Governors at least don't all have their heads up their behinds like the Gee-Ohh-Pee Congressional Reps:

Obama Gains G.O.P. Support From Governors

WASHINGTON - President Obama must wish governors could vote in Congress: While just three of the 219 Republican lawmakers backed the $787 billion economic recovery plan that he is signing into law on Tuesday, that trifling total would have been several times greater if support among the 22 Republican state executives counted.

The contrast reflects the two faces of the Republican Party these days.

Doo-Bee-Doo-Bee-Doo on February 17, 2009 at 07:55 AM

Umm, will someone tell "family values" Eric Cantor that "Back in the Saddle" is about a song about a hooker ...

The Gee-Ohh-Pee never ceases to amaze with their stupidity. Here's some suggestions on new "theme songs":

So the House Republicans are bragging about their opposition to the stimulus bill... with a video that uses Aerosmith's "Back in the Saddle"? And they're bragging about ... doing nothing? America deserves a better opposition party than that, and the opposition party deserves a more appropriate theme song.

The role of the opposition is to present different ideas, propose alternatives, challenge the party in power to think differently. You know -- all that civic stuff. Instead we get a song selection that's as poorly thought out as the party's platform. I mean, have they even listened to "Back in the Saddle"? One of its more printable lines is "four bits gets you time in the racks." That's right. Eric Cantor, the man who took Tom DeLay's old job, has just chosen for his battle cry a tune about prostitution in the Wild West.

Is this a theme song or a cry for help?

We, like the American people, are charitable and generous by nature. We therefore assume that any overtones of irony are unintentional. So, in the bipartisan spirit of the times, let's help the online community come up with a better song choice for the Republicans in Congress. (And, no ... it wouldn't be very bipartisan to suggest "Fool On the Hill.")

If the GOP wants to stay within the Aerosmith oeuvre, may we suggest "Love In An Elevator?" That's the one whose chorus summarizes our last eight years of governance: "Livin' it up while we're going dooown ..."

Or how about "Tell Her No"? Here's the chorus to that sixties nugget:

No no no no no no no no
no no no no no no no no no
no no no no no no

The word "no" is repeated 23 times. Seems appropriate, doesn't it? What's more, the group that performed it is "The Zombies," which brings to mind that persistent (though disproved) "zombie lie" that the stimulus bill will "dictate how health care is provided" (a topic we'll return to in a more serious moment).

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rj-eskow/aerosmith-no-way-help-the_b_167385.html

Zombies ... yeah that's about right for the Gee-Ohh-Pee, the party of limbaugh, the party of zero, the party of NO.

Morning DooBee,

I get such a kick out of the Mensa, Flapdoodle King !

first, he took the $39 he had squirreled away, and bought some gold with it! Then, he brags such a wonderful memory of the past and makes statements like this:

"What did Kennedy ever do to get in the top 10 Presidents? Other than being shot in the head."

Read and learn, Dufus Steve:

"President Kennedy's economic programs launched the country on its longest sustained expansion since World War II. He also took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation.

Shortly after his inauguration, Kennedy permitted a group of Cuban exiles to invade Cuba in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Fidel Castro. The invasion was a failure. In 1962 the Russians began to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. When this was discovered in October of 1962, Kennedy imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound for Cuba. With the world on the brink of nuclear war, the Russians backed down and agreed to remove the missiles. Kennedy asserted that both the Russians and Americans had a vital interest in stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and the arms race. To this end his administration negotiated the test ban treaty of 1963.

Articles and Products of History

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy goes down in history for being the first Catholic ever elected President in the United States. JFK was the first President who was born in the 20th century, and was also the youngest man ever to take office, at age 43.

JFK’s family originated from Ireland during the great famine and settled in Boston in the 1840s. JFK’s father, Joseph P. Kennedy, was a very wealthy man. Joe Kennedy placed high expectations on his nine children, and they were strongly encouraged to reach for the stars. John F. Kennedy attended private schools and graduated from Harvard in 1940. JFK became a war hero during World War II when he saved his crew after his navy torpedo boat was sliced in half by a Japanese destroyer.

John F. Kennedy soon entered politics and served as both a congressman and senator of Massachusetts. Kennedy went on to win the Presidential election of 1960, with his wife, Jacqueline by his side. Kennedy’s youth, good looks, and brains ushered in a new season for America. JFK challenged citizens to look within themselves and “Ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country.”

JFK’s administration is synonymous with the “New Frontier.” JFK’s administrative programs became the foundation for major growth in welfare and regulatory agencies. Civil rights, as well as business and labor unions, became the major domestic issues for Kennedy. JFK’s administration had citizens holding their breath during the space race, as well as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Got it now, baldy?

In Praise of New Republican Leadership

There is John McCain, the Republicans' failed presidential candidate, as incapable since the election as he was before. There is John Boehner, the party's leader in the House and Ohio's own George Hamilton (the tan, not the affair with his stepmother when he was 12). We now also have Michael "Drill Baby Drill" Steele, the party's inspiration-challenged chairman, who is supposed to lead the GOP back to victory despite his own electoral incompetence. And Eric Cantor, the party's shiny new star who idolizes Newt Gingrich, presumably for shutting down the government in an ego-driven tizzy, not for leaving his cancer-ridden first wife or dumping his second one for a Congressional aide 23 years his junior.

With the kind of inept leadership that would make even Merrill Lynch shudder, the Republican Party has nowhere to go but down, even though, at 19% approval, there is not much of a cushion left. More worrisome for Republicans are their recruiting prospects: if you were, say, a bright young thing in your 20s or 30s, would you rather hitch yourself to Mitch McConnell's star or Barack Obama's? Is there anything that the Republicans have said or done in the past few months that would inspire anyone who has a choice to join their crusade to nowhere? Do you know anyone who proudly supports the GOP? Actually, do you know anyone who understands what the GOP is even about?

And that is precisely the problem: there is so little substance to the Republican Party that, like Citibank, it would wither into oblivion before merging with, say, the Alaska Independence Party, were it not too big to fail. The US electoral system is rigged so that no matter how much it deserves to disappear, the Republican Party will be propped up. It has been so for over 150 years, and is likely to remain so for another 150,000. And so we are stuck with them. This is sad because we do deserve a spirited, intelligent debate about the ominous issues that face the country and the world. Forget even about solutions to the economic crisis or any kind of practical positions on anything of importance, Republicans are unable to begin to articulate the underlying values justifying their existence. And no, "lowering taxes" and "defending traditional marriage" are NOT philosophies. The former is, at best, a means to an end, and the latter a short-term tactic.

Perhaps Republicans were inspired by Obama's enchantingly vague promises of hope and change, not realizing that behind them was a solid set of beliefs in the role of government, and a deep understanding of the American experience. The lack of foundation of the Republican Party is a bigger problem than many of us realize because it means there is no constructive opposition and, thus, little discussion of any value. A number of people are dubious about the success of the stimulus package and would have liked to see arguments from both sides about the consequences of spending close to $1 trillion, or of doing nothing. But with a moribund, intellectually lazy Republican Party, we heard little more than sniping about an earmark here and there, and a fetishistic mantra about lower taxes. What we would like to hear is what role the GOP sees for the government in a crisis of this magnitude, and what role the government could have played to prevent it. It's that simple, and until Republicans can develop coherent answers to such basic questions, they will not regain power.

For eight years, the GOP has been an ugly knot of extreme contradictions, unable to find even the slightest thread of consistency in policies that called for financial rigor but grew public spending to record levels; resisted "nation-building," but drained $25,000 from each American household to attempt to recreate a country 6,000 miles away; wanted the government out of our lives, but proceeded to try to control our conversations, our relationships and our bodies. This utter fiasco is now described by party leaders as a time during which the GOP "lost its way." America is the land of endless redemption, normally a reasonably healthy process, but right now the salvation thing is over the top: from Republican leaders to Wall Street bankers to auto industry executives, everyone seems to realize that they had "lost their way," and that this new consciousness is enough to lead them back to the righteous path. No, it's not: they are all corrupt losers who need to be replaced and sent into internal exile, or worse. It goes without saying that we need new leadership in banking and industry (and perhaps compensation caps will achieve that), but we also need strong, smart, new leadership in the GOP, no matter how much we enjoy the prospect of another Republican electoral disaster in 2010. Without an adequate opposition, there is a noxious lack of rational debate, and endless risks to the democratic process. Also, it's not fun: do we really want to be the basketball team that won 100 to 0?

For the record, Packer and Studebaker merged in the 1950's and DeSoto & Kaiser merged around the same time. They were going to join with the recently merged companies of Hudson, Nash and Willy's to form what would have been the number 3 car maker, ahead of Chrysler.

The guy who put the deal together suddenly dies, and the new head of the newly named American Motors (Hudson, Willy's Nash) George Romney nixed the deal because it would have probably cost him his job, and he had the Governor's Mansion in his sights.

So due to Romney's stupidity he eventually ended up killing off all those companies.

Studebaker managed to stay in business through the mid 1960's (when Ike WASN'T the President) and AMC was eventually eaten up by Renault in the late 70s and then by Chrysler in the mid 80s because Iacocca wanted to get control of the Jeep brand, (which was the last Willy's brand in existence).

Ike wasn't President then. either.

Why bail out GM and Chrysler when no one bailed out Studebaker and Packard when they were making far better cars than either GM or Chrysler??

hmmmmm, if they were making such great cars, I wonder WHY they went out of business? Was it because no one was buying them? I barely remember Studebakers or Packards----Stevie must have owned one before he got his Edsel!

Morning all good Dems,

To return this country to its previous greatness and grow the middle class we must return our tax structure to what it was before raygun destroyed it to reward his rich evangelical friends.

The income tax rate for the top earners was 91%. This gave the government money to provide for its people unlike today.

We must also get over the neocons War on Drugs. Reducing the war on drugs we can reduce the size of our military and close a large number of the 725 military bases overseas.

Then maybe we can have single payer health care, free college for everyone, universal senior care and universal child care. Democrats must find a way to beat down the assholes who are trying to keep the American people down.

Its either this way or I predict that there will be big trouble in our grandchildrens future.

As Thom Hartman explains it, if the rich get to keep so much money they squirrel it away.

If the rich are taxed at the higher rates they will invest in America. They will invest in factories and plants and provide jobs for America. They will not "take home" so much because they will have to pay a huge tax if they don't invest it for the good of America.

This certainly makes sense to me.

Under the old tax plan, these people still took home $3,000,000 before taxes. If they can't live on the then screw them.

DPD,

Remember that car that came out in 1946 with three headlights. For the life of me I can't remember the name. They had on in Sutro's Museum in San Francisco till it burned. They were driven out of business by the Big Three..

Then there was the Delorean in the 1970's I believe. They too were driven out of business.

I certainly hope Tesla make it with their electric car in California. So far so good.

Otherwise we will be drining Chinese cars and the asians are such bad drivers. Just ask anyone from San Francisco.

Thank goodness Democrats were in charge during WW II. You'd think the rich could afford some compassion for others in times of trouble and sacrifice even a tiny winnie bit of their vast fortunes for the Common Good? No, not them.

Calif. budget stalemate sets up fiscal calamity

By JUDY LIN, Associated Press Write

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After a frustrating holiday weekend that failed to yield the one vote needed to end California's budget stalemate, the state is poised to begin layoff proceedings Tuesday for 20,000 government workers.

In addition to the layoffs, the state also plans to halt all remaining public works projects, potentially putting thousands of construction workers out of jobs.

"We are dealing with a catastrophe of unbelievable proportions," said state Sen. Alan Lowenthal, a Democrat from Long Beach and chairman of the Senate transportation committee.

Senate leader Darrell Steinberg announced late Monday that lawmakers had failed to find the final vote in his chamber as Republicans refused to support tax increases. He called a session for Tuesday and said he would put the tax provisions of the budget proposal up for a vote, even if they would not pass.

Steinberg warned lawmakers to bring their toothbrushes, saying they would not leave until that vote was secured.

"One member," Steinberg said. "One more member to put the interest of the state ahead of ideology and ahead of any parochial concern."

Like other states, California faces plunging tax revenue that has imperiled state services. The proposal put before lawmakers this weekend was negotiated by Schwarzenegger and the four legislative leaders and appeared to have support of the required two-thirds majority in the state Assembly.

However, it was falling one Republican vote short in the Senate, a situation that had not changed throughout a weekend marked by long hours and uncertainty over the state's future.

The plan includes $15.1 billion in program cuts, $14.4 billion in temporary tax increases and $11.4 billion in borrowing. The package also would send five ballot measures to voters in a special election to be held May 19....

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090217/ap_on_re_us/california_budget

What kind of craven people are these Republicans? Can anyone find even one patriotic Republican left in this country who loves their fellow Americans over the money they must have to gamble on Ponzi schemes?

They better start reinforcing those gated communities. When those laid off construction workers start coming after them with bulldozers maybe compassion might finally set in for these uncharitable conservatives Christians?

Lord only knows. Satan has a strong grip on them.

Yup, It was before my time but it was the Tucker. It was the safest car in production at the time. GM and Ford colluded to kill it, and the factory on the south side became a prefab aluminum housing panel factory to build crappy shacks for returning WWII vets. It then became a Ford aircraft motor plant for a while and after that it sat vacant for years until being converted into a shopping mall i he late 60s.

Francis Ford Copolla is a collector, and made an excellent movie about the car company and it's eventual crushing by the goons at GM, along with the help of the Federal Government. They only made 47 of them.

DC Journalists Love GOP Obstructionists, But Americans Don't

Jane Hamsher

Founder, FireDogLake.com
Posted February 16, 2009 | 12:22 PM (

There appears to be a pretty big gap between what DC journalists think Americans think, and what Americans actually think. No better example of this can be found than the "winners" and "losers" that DC media are proclaiming in the wake of the passage of the stimulus bill, and what DailyKos/Research 2000 polling on the subject indicates.

DC opinion: It's good for the Republicans!

* MSNBC's First Read lists among its winners "the Republican Party (which demonstrated unity after its big losses in November), and No.2 House Republican Eric Cantor (who raised his profile during the debate)." Reid gets a win, Pelosi gets a loss.
* Chris Cillizza also declares Eric Cantor a victor for maintaining party discipline (although he tags him a loser too for the AFSME ad). Reid gets a "win" here too, and House Democrats are deemed losers, because "it appeared as though this was a Senate-run production."
* Fox News unsurprisingly says "Republican lawmakers may turn out to be winners. Most of them voted against the package, and in their largely unified opposition, they found an issue to galvanize the party after two consecutive dispiriting electoral defeats." Reid and Pelosi don't exist.
* Liz Sidoti also says the Republicans win: "Adrift after back-to-back electoral losses, they found their voice against a Democratic speaker and an expanded majority. They held to the GOP's cornerstone of fiscal conservatism as they led the effort to define the package as too costly and too quick." Likewise, Jon Boehner: "He strengthened his hold on his job, keeping his rank-and-file united against the House version." Again, Reid gets a win. She gives Pelosi and Mitch McConnell losses.

The Rest of America: "Thanks For the Help"

According to Daily Kos polling, however, the change in public opinion from a poll taken from Feb. 2-5 to the latest one taken from Feb. 9-12 indicates that Pelosi, Reid and the Democratic Party have actually gone up in public approval -- all had a net change of +2 points, while the Congressional Dems scored a +3. Conversely, Republicans went down -- the Republican Party had a net change of -2, while McConnell, Boehner and Congressional Republicans all had a loss of -3.

doc1.jpg

And if you go back to the beginning of the year and track how the public is viewing the political situation in Washington DC, the changes are even more dramatic:

doc2.jpg

Pelosi and the Democratic Party are the big winners, scoring a +5. Congressional Dems score a +3, and Reid has actually lost two points.

But contrary to beltway opinion, the Republicans are getting hammered. While the Republican Party has only had a net change of -2, those directly involved in the stimulus battle are taking huge hits: McConnell and Boehner at -11, and the Congressional Republicans who are getting such applause from the beltway denizens score a -10.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-hamsher/dc-journalists-love-gop-o_b_167277.html

Media pundits are way out of line with the public. That was obvious during the debates with the insta-polls. The inside the beltway pundits were consistently out of line with the actual reaction of the voters. So once again, the DC pundits got it wrong. The Gee-Ohh-Pee are taking a big hit from their obstructionism. They better find a new "theme song".

The Republicans are just lost souls who need to take seriously the Bible verses posted here daily. Fromm and Essie are trying to get through to them. Hi Sandy,

Cantor and his band of Gee-Ohh-Pee merry men are a party in search of a theme song. Maybe we can help them out?

The Mickey Mouse clubhouse theme may work for them. After all, they tried to argue against the stimulus bill using the "Salt Marsh Mouse" as a theme:

GOP 'Salt Marsh Mouse' Stimulus Strategy Assailed By Conservatives

As the Economic Stimulus Package hurtled toward an agreement last week, I was taken aback by the last minute derailment strategy the GOP undertook -- something about a salt marsh mouse that Nancy Pelosi was going to give a million billion dollars to, and subsequently celebrate in this year's Folsom Street Fair, because it's the most liberal rodent in the country. "How deliciously old-school!" I thought, adding, "And inane! And ineffective! And embarrassing!" Apparently, I wasn't alone in these sentiments. Take David Frum, for example:

The problem with the story is not that it was false. The problem with the story is that it was stupid.

I understood there would be no earmarks under this administration, and there are most certainly earmarks in this package. If our leaders cannot legislate without this type of gratuitous backroom bargaining, then we are doomed to continue on the downward economic spiral imposed upon this country by the most nefarious, corrupt, greedy, fascist administration ever to darken the oval office: i.e., the Bush Administration.
