DNC Chairman Tim Kaine’s Statement Commemorating Labor Day

Washington, DC - DNC Chairman Tim Kaine issued the following statement commemorating Labor Day:

“Today we honor and thank America’s hard working men and women - teachers and policemen, construction workers and bus drivers, doctors and nurses, engineers and musicians, factory workers and service workers - for their hard work and sacrifice.

“Today we also remember how important the labor movement is to our nation. For the better part of a century, organized labor has been a strong voice in the Democratic Party and a passionate advocate for millions of American workers. It’s made our Party stronger and helped American workers build better lives for themselves and their families.

“We should also reflect on the strides working families have made under President Obama’s leadership and Democrats in Congress. Since President Obama took office, 95 percent of working families have received a tax cut, the minimum wage has been increased and thanks to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, women are now guaranteed equal pay for equal work.

“But there’s still much more work to do. Every American worker should have access to quality, affordable health care; so, we are going to enact health insurance reform this year. Workers should be able to try their hand at a new green job; so, we are going to build a strong clean energy economy. And every child in America should be ready to compete in the global marketplace; so, we are going to improve our education system.

“America’s workers are the backbone of our economy and the key to a prosperous future, which is why President Obama and our Democratic leaders will continue to take bold action to help our economy recover and rebuild. This Labor Day, we celebrate the contributions of American workers and renew our pledge to fight for working families.”
