Breaking: President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Posted by Chris on October 9, 2009 at 09:53 AM

Early this morning, it was announced that President Obama had been selected as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. From the New York Times:

In a stunning surprise, the Nobel Committee announced in Oslo that it has awarded the annual prize to the president “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” The award cited in particular Mr. Obama’s effort to reduce the world’s nuclear arsenal.

“He has created a new international climate,” the committee said.

The announcement, coming extraordinarily early in Mr. Obama’s presidency — less than nine months after he took office as the first African American president — shocked people from Norway to Washington.

The White House had no idea it was coming.

...a senior administration official said in an e-mail message that Mr. Gibbs called the White House shortly before 6 a.m. and woke the president with the news.

“The president was humbled to be selected by the committee,” the official said, without adding anything further.

Mr. Obama made repairing the fractured relations between the United States and the rest of the world a major theme of his campaign for the presidency and since taking office as president, he has pursued a range of policies intended to fulfill that goal. He has vowed to pursue a world without nuclear arms, as he did in a speech in Prague earlier this year, reached out to the Muslim world, delivering a major speech in Cairo in June, and sought to restart peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said in its citation. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”

President Obama is only the third sitting U.S. president to win the award.

What a terrific honor, and what a slap in Bush's face ! Maybe, just maybe, we will see Peace in our time.

Watch out for the hatred to start from the Reich Wingers! This will be hard to swallow. Those who have been praying Obama and America fails , in hopes of Repugs taking back the majority and the WH !

Maybe Obama might try accomplishing something before accepting the "He is not George Bush" Award.

Congratulations, President Obama.

And congratulations to all those Americans that stood up to the dysfunctional and irresponsible Republican leadership that caused a world depression and untold suffering and grief to innocent Iraqis. By voting for this capable and determined young man, these voters sent a signal to the world that the United States of America is back to itself again.

President Obama strives to achieve his goals with patience, encouragement, and serious attention to the needs of all. I see this as an acknowledgment by the Europeans, if not the rest world, that they are ready to forgive us for allowing the irresponsible forces in our country to run wild.

This Prize is as much for the American people as it is for our President.

Others around the world perceive that we have not failed as the neocons and conservative speculators did but have persevered and triumphed over those that would torture, spy, bully, and manipulate markets for their own selfish gain.

Sometimes the stars all align in a row. That is what Americans did last November. We overcame our weakness and mistakes. The sane took back control of our country and we as a people are now ready to right all the things that were made wrong...inside our country and outside.

This Prize is for you, America.

God Bless you all, each and every one. Now get back out there and vote next year during the Midterms. Keep the progress we are making going.

This is unexpected but welcomed surprise to say the least, while President Obama's work is still in it's early stages, the fact he can inspire hope in the United States as well as the world is truly remarkable.

Now some opponents will bicker and complain and completely miss the message. This is about promoting peace, unity and working towards that goal. In the end, peace is a continuous process, it must always be renewed as time goes on. As society and technology changes, there will always be unrest, disagreements and misunderstandings, it is how we deal with those events that define whether we pursue peaceful resolutions or face the onslaught of war.

It takes great strength to combat evil and injustice, and even greater strength to temper one's passion to prevent the misuse of power and force. President Obama has a long road ahead of him but he is not alone.

This is a proud day for us, we should use this moment to continue to propel ourselves towards our goals. President Obama showed great class by humbly accepting this award and urging Americans to continue to focus on the issues that need our work and attention.

All I can is lead the way Mr.President, we have a lot of work to do and we can make a difference.

I find Huckabee's strategy very odd. He urges his Republican colleagues not to criticize the president for the award but to "allow those on the left to explain what he did in his first two weeks as President that merited such recognition." Regardless of who nominated him, the democratic party is not responsible for choosing the winner. The list of nominators won't be released for 50 years, so I suppose we'll just have to wait to find out who is responsible.

Mr. President, this award is deserved. You have done more in your eight and a half months in office toward establishing world peace than your predecessor did in his entire eight year term. The majority of your nation is proud of you as am I. Well done, Mr. President. Keep up the good work.

Is this a joke?? If not, there will be no living with the Kool Aid Kids. And, I guess now we know why he has delayed the decision on troop deployment.

I'm sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out what the hell he did to get this award?!?

And that further devalues this "prize" in my eyes. It is so lame when someone points out to me, "but he won a Nobel Peace Prize" as in Al Gore, Jimmy Carter... pffft.

I figured the NPP was a load of political junk after Al Bore won a few years back. When Al Bore beat out a lady who saved a sh!tload of Jewish orphans in Nazi Germany by hiding and caring for them in her own house (even her own kids didn't know, lest they slip up), then worked like the devil to locate their surviving family and reunite them after the war ... but hey, documentaries are cool, right? … and had her limbs broken by the Nazis in their failed attempts to get the names of the people who helped her. The "prize" is meaningless anymore.

He was in office all of two weeks when he was nominated. So he was basically nominated because of his campaign promises. WTF? If he won this, I think I deserve a Grammy for how well I sing in the shower, and an Oscar for how well I pretended to like that girl back in High School! It's like giving the Nobel to Miss America because she is for "World Peace." Does anyone have a list of the miracles he performed in the 12 DAYS he had to work with prior to being nominated ? I am really having a problem wrapping my head around this.

The once very distinguished prize has lost all credibility. At least they got the phrasing right..... he must have "won" it, because he sure didn't earn it! When did they start giving the award for "letter of intent"?

Lets not forget the immortal words of peace spoken by the former distinguished terrorist recipient of this Prize. Peace for us means the destruction of Israel. We are preparing for an all-out war, a war which will last for generations ... Yasser Arafat ... elsewhere in the news ... Seismic activity in Scandinavia has been traced to a Northern Cemetery in Stockholm, Sweden where the remains of Alfred Nobel were found madly spinning like a top. ... I'd be ashamed to win a Nobel Peace Prize. What a joke.

Since Obama threw out the first pitch at a baseball game, he'll probably get the Cy Young award as well.

If any president deserved a NPP, Ronald "tear this wall down" Reagan did for ending the cold war. But, Reagan was not a self absorbed, shallow, disingenuous, empty suit with a teleprompter. The whole world thinks the prize is laughable. Check it out. Obama knew it was coming. This is all theatre and politics and it is all about him. He has done nothing with his domestic and foreign policy except further endanger the the United States as we know it and Americans are getting fed up with it. How will this impact 2010 elections? Won't hurt the left ... and don't forget that most of the stimulus money the left-o's are handing out, will hit next year too. Uncle Sugar is buying up lots of votes ... at YOUR expense.

Oh and what exactly did Obama do his first two weeks in office prior to his NPP nomination ~

January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.

January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an "open house" party at the White House.

January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (how's that working out?)

January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.

January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.

January 25: Skipped church.

January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner's swearing in ceremony.

January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.

January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.

January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.

January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.

January 31: Took the day off.

February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.

No matter how many times you try to downplay a major honor, the joke is still on you.

Are you kidding, what has he done to deserve this? There are so many other people that deserve this more then Obama!! You should get this High award for actually doing something not for saying that you will do something. What a sad day! He should have won this award after he did something and not before.

Storm63 on October 10, 2009 at 02:16 AM

Do you Republicans ever bother to listen when others speak or read up on a subject before commenting? The Nobel people explained why the President won, and the criteria for winning is well spelled out in Nobel's will.

The President won in the same tradition many other honorees did. He sets an example, encourages others to face old prejudices, and leads world leaders in attempting new forms of cooperation to reach peaceful solutions to conflicts.

If you want to appear petty and small, why should I try to stop you? Continue to show the middle class why you are sore losers and obstructionists.

Can't you guys just be happy that our country's leader is getting a prize?

An accomplishment that is well deserved and to an individual who exemplifies in every way the meaning of peace and unity. It is a pleasure to be on President Obama's side.
