Remarks by President Obama on Winning the Nobel Peace Prize

Posted by Jonah on October 9, 2009 at 12:22 PM
Good morning. Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning. After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, "Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday!" And then Sasha added, "Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up." So it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective.

I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action -- a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.

These challenges can't be met by any one leader or any one nation. And that's why my administration has worked to establish a new era of engagement in which all nations must take responsibility for the world we seek. We cannot tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to more nations and in which the terror of a nuclear holocaust endangers more people. And that's why we've begun to take concrete steps to pursue a world without nuclear weapons, because all nations have the right to pursue peaceful nuclear power, but all nations have the responsibility to demonstrate their peaceful intentions.

We cannot accept the growing threat posed by climate change, which could forever damage the world that we pass on to our children -- sowing conflict and famine; destroying coastlines and emptying cities. And that's why all nations must now accept their share of responsibility for transforming the way that we use energy.

We can't allow the differences between peoples to define the way that we see one another, and that's why we must pursue a new beginning among people of different faiths and races and religions; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect.

And we must all do our part to resolve those conflicts that have caused so much pain and hardship over so many years, and that effort must include an unwavering commitment that finally realizes that the rights of all Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security in nations of their own.

We can't accept a world in which more people are denied opportunity and dignity that all people yearn for -- the ability to get an education and make a decent living; the security that you won't have to live in fear of disease or violence without hope for the future.

And even as we strive to seek a world in which conflicts are resolved peacefully and prosperity is widely shared, we have to confront the world as we know it today. I am the Commander-in-Chief of a country that's responsible for ending a war and working in another theater to confront a ruthless adversary that directly threatens the American people and our allies. I'm also aware that we are dealing with the impact of a global economic crisis that has left millions of Americans looking for work. These are concerns that I confront every day on behalf of the American people.

Some of the work confronting us will not be completed during my presidency. Some, like the elimination of nuclear weapons, may not be completed in my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone. This award is not simply about the efforts of my administration -- it's about the courageous efforts of people around the world.

And that's why this award must be shared with everyone who strives for justice and dignity -- for the young woman who marches silently in the streets on behalf of her right to be heard even in the face of beatings and bullets; for the leader imprisoned in her own home because she refuses to abandon her commitment to democracy; for the soldier who sacrificed through tour after tour of duty on behalf of someone half a world away; and for all those men and women across the world who sacrifice their safety and their freedom and sometime their lives for the cause of peace.

That has always been the cause of America. That's why the world has always looked to America. And that's why I believe America will continue to lead.

Thank you very much.

Mr. President, this award is deserved. You have done more in your eight and a half months in office toward establishing world peace than your predecessor did in his entire eight year term. The majority of your nation is proud of you as am I. Well done, Mr. President. Keep up the good work.

This was a Prize offered with great hope and expectations. It is an affirmation of what this President has committed to doing along with other world leaders and a challenge for all of them to follow through with their mutual goals.

I am tremendously proud today to say that I am an American. I know we have taken the first steps to cementing old alliances and creating new ones. We are no longer alone. We have rejoined the world politic and are no longer viewed with suspicion and scorn.

We must work hard to achieve our goals and believe that we can. I'm feeling a lot of respect and friendship from our allies today. They apparently never stopped believing in us. Our enemies know that we stand together...again.

This is good. This is humbling. This is our call to serve. We must live up to our promise.

President Obama's recieving the Nobel Prize is not only an affirmation of what he has already done in 8 months, but more so a vote of confidence indicated by the world community and what they believe he is capable of doing. Perhaps the rest of the world knows our leader better than we do. Humble as always, President Obama believes he doesn't deserve this great honor. The nation however believes he does. Oh wait a minute!!!The dark side led by none other than "Brush Lintball" believes we as a nation are weak and helpless, and this is nothing than a cleverly disguised plot to keep us that way.........Paranoia is such an ugly trait isn't it?

Let's see...Hmmmmmm. When was the last time a Conservative recieved the Nobel Peace Prize. I honestly don't know. I do however think it's appalling that the other side of the aisle is bad mouthing this achievement rather than congratulating the President on his accomplishment. After all regardless of party affiliation we're all Americans aren't we?? Why must this, like so many other aspects of our lives as Americans be politicized. Silly Me.

unionist on October 9, 2009 at 05:41 PM

Is this a joke?? If not, there will be no living with the Kool Aid Kids. And, I guess now we know why he has delayed the decision on troop deployment.

I'm sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out what the hell he did to get this award?!?

And that further devalues this "prize" in my eyes. It is so lame when someone points out to me, "but he won a Nobel Peace Prize" as in Al Gore, Jimmy Carter... pffft.

I figured the NPP was a load of political junk after Al Bore won a few years back. When Al Bore beat out a lady who saved a sh!tload of Jewish orphans in Nazi Germany by hiding and caring for them in her own house (even her own kids didn't know, lest they slip up), then worked like the devil to locate their surviving family and reunite them after the war ... but hey, documentaries are cool, right? … and had her limbs broken by the Nazis in their failed attempts to get the names of the people who helped her. The "prize" is meaningless anymore.

He was in office all of two weeks when he was nominated. So he was basically nominated because of his campaign promises. WTF? If he won this, I think I deserve a Grammy for how well I sing in the shower, and an Oscar for how well I pretended to like that girl back in High School! It's like giving the Nobel to Miss America because she is for "World Peace." Does anyone have a list of the miracles he performed in the 12 DAYS he had to work with prior to being nominated ? I am really having a problem wrapping my head around this.

The once very distinguished prize has lost all credibility. At least they got the phrasing right..... he must have "won" it, because he sure didn't earn it! When did they start giving the award for "letter of intent"?

Lets not forget the immortal words of peace spoken by the former distinguished terrorist recipient of this Prize. Peace for us means the destruction of Israel. We are preparing for an all-out war, a war which will last for generations ... Yasser Arafat ... elsewhere in the news ... Seismic activity in Scandinavia has been traced to a Northern Cemetery in Stockholm, Sweden where the remains of Alfred Nobel were found madly spinning like a top. ... I'd be ashamed to win a Nobel Peace Prize. What a joke.

Since Obama threw out the first pitch at a baseball game, he'll probably get the Cy Young award as well.

If any president deserved a NPP, Ronald "tear this wall down" Reagan did for ending the cold war. But, Reagan was not a self absorbed, shallow, disingenuous, empty suit with a teleprompter. The whole world thinks the prize is laughable. Check it out. Obama knew it was coming. This is all theatre and politics and it is all about him. He has done nothing with his domestic and foreign policy except further endanger the the United States as we know it and Americans are getting fed up with it. How will this impact 2010 elections? Won't hurt the left ... and don't forget that most of the stimulus money the left-o's are handing out, will hit next year too. Uncle Sugar is buying up lots of votes ... at YOUR expense.

Oh and what exactly did Obama do his first two weeks in office prior to his NPP nomination ~

Joe the Plumber,

More sour grapes? It's our fault Republicans have no leadership, talent, brains, or accomplishments to show for pushing 35 years of conservative propaganda, bravado, and dirty tricks?

No matter how much you bitch about it, people really like this serious, hard working president and look to him instead of conservatives for real answers to real problems.

You lost your credibility. You have marginalized your party by continuing to push the same irresponsible conservative policies that nearly destroyed our middle class standard of living, our credit markets, our military capabilities, and our infrastructure.

You screwed up royally. No one trusts you to do anything right. You reaped what you sowed. You won the Booby Prize. We are so proud of you.

SandyH on October 10, 2009 at 12:03 AM

the smell of sour grapes permeates through your post, Joey.

Let's just say this-----if McCain/Palin had got elected instead, you think our country's leaders would be getting ANY kind of award, outside of one for WAR? McCain would have bombed, bombed, bombed Iran by now, and we would be in WW III. Some peace from the Right Wingers, huh?

WHERE IS YOUR COUNTRY PRIDE? WHERE IS YOUR AMERICAN LOYALTY AND PATRIOTISM?

You Reich Wingers are miserable because this country is suceeding ! Your only prayer is for failure of this President and thus the country.

So Much hatred in angry white men! Shame on you all!!!

First, it's no coincidence that the email with my confirmation code to comment was placed in my junk mail folder. But, to the issue at hand, even Mr. Obama would have to admit there were dozens of more deserving and more needy people who put their lives on the line each day to promote peace. He acknowledged that, but frankly didn't have the humility to gracefully decline the award. A very poor decision on his part.

Here is part of what the Nobel commitee wrote on the occasion of the award:

"For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman."

Note the commitee has calibrated the award precisely in the present tense - nothing starry-eyed in this language. Follow Link for more. What do you think the right is going to say? What do you care?

9
NoApologies on October 10, 2009 at 11:48 AM

The Nobel committee has become an anti-American organization that has sought to use its awards to influence world opinion and American policy to its own ends. Our countries foreign policy should NOT be bought or influenced by 5 Norwegian men with an arguably or not, anti-American agenda.

In 1994, one of the three recipients to whom it awarded the Peace Prize was Yasser Arafat, for his “efforts to promote peace in the Middle East"

Peace through the promotion of terrorism? Through the encouragement of the Intifada? Through his corruption and theft of Palestinian assets for his own personal benefit?

In 2005 the committee awarded the laureate to Mohammed ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Commission for their work in preventing the development of nuclear arms. Since then, North Korea has developed and tested nuclear weapons, and Iran is much farther along in its nuclear weapons program.

My opinion is that this award is a political move to encourage Obama along the line of thinking like Neville Chamberlain rather than Winston Churchill in dealing with the world’s tyrannical and terrorist states.

Time will tell what cost will be paid by future American soldiers and our allies and perhaps YOU and I, here at home. While Obama is reducing our nuclear capabilities his talking to Iran is helping to build theirs. Remember Jimmy Carter "talked" to NoKor about nuclear weapons too. How is that working out?

Obama can do no wrong? IMO he is the cult leader of the unquestioning and shallow.

I guess when all else fails, throw the race card out there. Your "angry white men" comment exposes you for the racist that you are. Especially when you have NO idea of my skin pigmentation.

You ask, "WHERE IS YOUR COUNTRY PRIDE? WHERE IS YOUR AMERICAN LOYALTY AND PATRIOTISM?" ... right where it always has been ... right here in my heart. I am totally against the type of government intervention, control, redistribution give-away and debt that is so radiantly espoused by the leftist among us. Rape this country as much as you can while you have the chance, all in the name of YOUR "pride and patriotism", because America is becoming very tired of you.

Give me Liberty ... or I will get up and get it myself.

Give me Liberty ... or I will get up and get it myself.

Joe, why don't you go find the kind of Reich Wing, greedy, bigoted, liberty your ilk want, in another country?

Remember when Bush was elected and again reelected, and you boys all shouted Suck if Up. Move if you do not like it. Well we are saying the same to you.

American is not becoming tired of we Patriots, who took our country back-----quite the opposite old Sore loser. Here's a few facts:

"Barack Obama won a decisive victory against John McCain - winning 365 electoral votes to McCain's 173 and winning the popular vote by 9 million - the largest popular vote margin ever for a non-incumbent"

It is YOU, Extreme Fringe hate filled Right Wing element that America is sick to death of. Love it or leave it, chump!

You have no clue, do you!

Dear Mr. President,

First, your speech at the Human Rights event tonight was the best that I have heard by any president ever, bar none.

You make me so proud to have voted for you.

Secondly, Congrats on the Nobel Peace Prize!

Norwegians are no dummies, they knew exactly what they were doing, they trust you.

Lastly, with all due admiration and respect, I must say a few words regarding the U.S. health-care crisis. It's killing us, fiscally, socially and quite literally, it is killing us.

How better to be considered capable of helping the world than by helping your own people first? Think about it. Cleaning up your own back yard is part of what the Vikings were hoping for when they gave you the most important award the world has to offer.

Over 65% of Americans want a public option. Therefore, it would probably make sense, to see to it that they get it. Please don't buckle under the pressure of the puppeteers bill this Tuesday. Please say no, and cut the apron strings to the "Jabbas" of the insurance industry once and for all, and wipe your hands clean of their grubby slime. That, Mr. President, is what will help America heal. Nothing short, of that, will due.

You do this, for your own country, and you really will have the credibility and the strength to help bring peace to the places in world that need it most. We will all be stronger in support of you as a result, and as our leader, you will be stronger for it too.

Your Friend,

Kristine Falck-Pedersen

Pamb "It is YOU, Extreme Fringe hate filled Right Wing element that America is sick to death of. Love it or leave it, chump!"

Hate filled? hmmmm what group accounts for 53% of homicides and only has 3pct of the population? See who most convicted murderers support in prison (hint- Obama). Yes it is the left that acts on hate and has the most. Try being less ignorant.

13
zerObama on October 11, 2009 at 12:27 PM

make that 11pct of the population

14
zerObama on October 11, 2009 at 12:28 PM

I'll agree with zerObama, I think he doesn't deserve it.

15
zerObama on October 11, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Pam"b" it is you who choose to use the words of socialism and hate. No amount of name calling and finger pointing will disguise the fact that you are a racist bigot, as evidenced by your previous posts. You apparently do not know how to have a civil discussion. It is your way or the highway. I feel extremely sad for you and your circumstance.

Hold a mirror before your soul
And stand within and view
That puzzled figure standing there
That puzzled look is YOU

One day, perhaps as you grow older or actually earn a real living, you will become tired of government control in so many aspects of your life and you will realize that true freedom is becoming simply a word and an ideology each day.

Wave your flag high and proudly "Patriot" ... all the while with your hand out for sumpin' from Uncle Sugar. Good luck in finding your life. It is possible to have one without politics ... and politicians hands in your pockets and your home ya know.

If Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize just for being inspiring, then those so inspired should share in this award.
