But freshmen Democrats who were elected last year in primarily Republican districts are shaking in their boots at the prospects of being tied to such an agenda, which has been shown to be very unpopular among the citizens.
In addition, the so-called 'blue dog Democrats' are feeling the heat about the provision for abortions in the bill and have insisted they cannot vote for the measure if such a provision remains part of the legislation.
And, of course, the 'public option' remains fairly unpopular among moderate and conservative Democrats.
Thus, after the House leadership announced there would be a vote on the bill possibly as early as today, the Democrats admitted that they lack the votes to approve it. This threw everything into a tailspin as frantic Democratic leaders tried to cut deals in back rooms, offering compromises on abortion funding.
As it stands now, the vote has been delayed until Sunday at the earliest. Some insiders say there is no chance for a vote until Tuesday. Still others claim that the House leadership will not get the necessary number of votes to risk being defeated on the floor.
Clearly the Democrats are feeling the pressure from angry citizens who are livid that their representatives would even consider such a massive overhaul of the U.S. Healthcare System just to provide insurance coverage for around 8 million people at the most. Citizens are intelligent enough to see right through this and recognize it for what it is. This is not about healthcare insurance at all. This is about seizing control of a large portion of the U.S. Economy and placing medical care under the domination of the federal government.

Questionable Priorities:
While the bill will slash Medicare funding, it will also direct billions of dollars to numerous inner-city social work and diversity programs with vague standards of accountability.
• Sec. 399V (p. 1422) provides for grants to community "entities" with no required qualifications except having "documented community activity and experience with community healthcare workers" to "educate, guide, and provide experiential learning opportunities" aimed at drug abuse, poor nutrition, smoking and obesity. "Each community health worker program receiving funds under the grant will provide services in the cultural context most appropriate for the individual served by the program."
These programs will "enhance the capacity of individuals to utilize health services and health related social services under Federal, State and local programs by assisting individuals in establishing eligibility . . . and in receiving services and other benefits" including transportation and translation services.
• Sec. 222 (p. 617) provides reimbursement for culturally and linguistically appropriate services. This program will train health-care workers to inform Medicare beneficiaries of their "right" to have an interpreter at all times and with no co-pays for language services.
• Secs. 2521 and 2533 (pp. 1379 and 1437) establishes racial and ethnic preferences in awarding grants for training nurses and creating secondary-school health science programs. For example, grants for nursing schools should "give preference to programs that provide for improving the diversity of new nurse graduates to reflect changes in the demographics of the patient population." A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later.
"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.
In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.
Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.
The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.
Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price gouging, bid rigging and market allocation.

Now, attention will shift to the Senate, which will soon be working through the difference between the House and Senate bills.

I figured that something of this sort would be necessary in the House. The abortion provision isn’t any thing different than is already law. But allows allow Blue Dogs to restate their position loud and clear for the people back home.

The insurance industry response today has been interesting. They have already changed their approach in negative advertising. Instead of opposing any change in the status quo they are just zeroing in on a "public option". A trigger or opt-out will obviously become law and they know it. I can live with it, too, just to get the option written into law in some way.
And once the bill is put into law, a public option will immediately go into effect in the sane blue states and purple states with it quickly following in red states where incompetent conservative politicians will never figure out how to stop it. God bless their stupid, miserable souls.
Isn't it ironic that it was the complete mishandling of the economy by the Republicans during the last 35 years which will force the Jindals and McDonnells of the GOP gladly accept an opt-in or opt-out as a solution? It’s a public health problem that they know cannot be ignored any longer at the state level.
The Republicans have all been publicly whistling "Dixie", but secretly hoping they could be singing "Glory Halleluiah" that someone finally addressed this public health problem that they couldn’t. You betcha.
Change is not always easy, but it is inevitable. We are inching toward our final goal and even the insurance companies know it’s within our grasp. They will try to water it down, but they can't stop it. Good work, Speaker Pelosi and all our House Dems...including the Blue Dogs.

You told us that the Republicans would hold the House in 2006, the Senate in 2008, and tht Americans would never vote for a black man. You're now telling us that some form of a health care bill will not pass in the Senate?
For someone who never gets it right, I'd say we can feel quite confident that help is on the way...after 35 years of neglect and outright irresponsibility by the Republican Party.
Only the the red states "sort of" want to live in the past. The rest of the country has been scared straight...by the crooks and liars of the Republican Party. All it takes is one major issue finally being addressed constructively by the Democratic Party before voters come to expect all of them to be faced in the same way.
The American electorate will no longer accept Republicans saying "nothing can be done" about the grave problems this nation faces when they have seen that they can. We Democrats are inching toward your Waterloo in Washington and after that every state capitol including those in the South.
With every problem attacked, more voters will be asking, "Why couldn't the Republicans have done this years ago? Why didn't they even try when they were in power? Why should we ever give them another chance to screw things up and obstruct change? What are they good for anyway?"
You can no longer fool all of the people all of the time.
The GOP has become a regional party at best; and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of young Democrats in the South and West challenge that assumption in the near future, too. The younger generation has tasted the sweet joy of victory and become hungry for more.
The GOP is old and attracting the worst possible people to attract younger voters. You Birthers and teabaggers can't even be counted on when the chips are down. Quitters and revisionists die a hundred deaths before they finally are blown away with the rest of the past.

One year after the race for the White House, publishers have released several books about the GOP vice presidential candidate. The most anticipated is her own memoir, "Going Rogue: An American Life," which lands on store shelves on Nov. 17 and is tops in pre-orders on Amazon and Barnes & Noble's websites.
Will there be parodies? You betcha.
In fact, the two spoof books share the same title. "Going Rouge: Sarah Palin - An American Nightmare" features essays by writers for The Nation, a liberal magazine. The other is "Going Rouge -- The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring and Activity Book" by husband and wife team Julie Sigwart and Michael Stinson.
"That other book just has a bunch of words," joked Stinson of The Nation's book. "We got pictures!"
But coloring pictures is only half of it. There are mazes such as "Help Sarah find her way to the White House" (hint: it's impossible) and a cut-out paper doll page titled "Dress Sarah for Success!" (wardrobe options include an Alaskan wolf pelt skirt). There's also a word search with this theme: "Sarah wins nomination for Pres! Who will she pick for her Veep?" Names to be found include Rush Limbaugh, Joe the Plummer, and Hairstylist.
Stinson, 57, and his wife are long-time liberal political activists who live in Ocean Pines, Md., and work as graphic artists.
He is also well acquainted with the Alaskan terrain. He worked there as a uranium prospector in the 1970s. At one point the helicopter he was flying in crashed over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Stinson, along with the rest of crew, spent a week in the remote wilderness before they were found. ("We actually did talk about cannibalism.")
Echoing Palin's "drill, baby, drill" statement from her vice presidential debate, he said the goal of the coloring book is to have it "sell, baby, sell!" He called the response to date "phenomenal," especially among bookstores in Alaska.
"We decided to do something playful and spontaneous," said Stinson, who used to collect every issue of Mad Magazine. "We also figured a coloring book was the perfect vehicle in which to lampoon her."

well, just to clarify your misunderstanding about SS and all, it is now $255, and if the spouse is dead, if there is a dependent kid under 18----the government will sign it over to the guardian of the kid, certainly not the kid, AND it is not the intent of the Government to provide burial policies. the prudent person has life insurance ,at least eough for final bills and to bury them with. Or used as Estate builders, for future generations.
So unless you find another sucker---ooops I mean wife, you can skip tht benefit.

Remember that this passing of this bill was a VICTORY for Obama and the Democrats. Even if the Senate version changes it, it still has to go to House and Senate committee to iron out the final version. No Matter what the final version--------History will record how President Brack Obama and the Democrats started the ball rolling on Health Reform for the United States of America. Finally catching up with the rest of the world. The Republicans will be seen as spoilers for a long time to come. I personally will make sure it is out there at least once a week. Wrote my LTE this morning to a couple of papers. Wrote Lieberman one more time, and reminded him----his legacy is not going to be pretty when the Democrats get through with him. It wasn’t. She had just delivered a promise decades of her predecessors failed to bring home, harnessing her uncommon focus, vote-counting acumen and consensus-building skills to bring tens of millions of Americans a giant leap closer to having health insurance coverage with a 220-215 roll call.
“Somebody asked me if this was a victory for [President] Barack Obama. It’s not. This victory belongs to her,” said House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.). “As far as I know she never sleeps nor eats.”
The bill’s fate, for now, rests across the Capitol in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). But with Saturday’s vote, Pelosi proved yet again she is the able master of a Democratic Caucus that is enjoying its greatest political and legislative success since at least the beginning of the Clinton administration and arguably since its legislative heyday in the mid-1960s.
Democrats, including Pelosi, view the push for expanding the government’s role in the health care system as a new plank in the social justice platform constructed with Civil Rights, Voting Rights, open housing and Medicare laws enacted during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, when Democrats held similar – and at times even larger — majorities in the House.

Conservatives Poised to Repeat History
LOS ANGELES -- Was George Santayana right when he said that those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it?
Well, perhaps the Republican Party can test that thesis for the rest of us. Forty-five years ago the Republicans in convention -- the convention that nominated Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater for president -- tried to boo New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller off the stage when he said:
"These extremists feed on fear, hate and terrorism. They encourage disunity ... The Republican Party must repudiate those people."
It was no tea party, that one. Angry Goldwater delegates began booing and chanting, "We Want Barry!" Many of the people in the hall wanted Rockefeller out of the party at least as much as they wanted Goldwater in the White House.
"Rockefeller was the enemy!" said Richard Viguerie, who was one of the most enthusiastic chanters in the balcony. He was 30 years old then and was soon to become an important figure in the "New Right," the branch of the party that wanted liberals, and moderates too, out so that the Grand Old Party would be a pristine conservative vehicle. Maybe a Model T.
Goldwater, of course, went down in one of the greatest landslides in the history of presidential elections. Many raw conservatives ended up more or less in the wilderness or underbrush until they felt free to come out into the open again during Ronald Reagan's run for president in 1980.
It seemed to me then that the big story of last Tuesday's cluster of elections was not the Democratic defeats in gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia, but the amazing race in the 23rd Congressional District of New York, a relatively poor area where trees greatly outnumber residents. Most of that area -- congressional district lines have changed over time -- has sent only Republicans to Washington since 1871. On Tuesday, a Democrat named Bill Owens was elected over a moderate Republican and a Conservative Party candidate named
Douglas Hoffman.
How could that happen? Well, conservatives were out of the woods again. Local Republican leaders in 11 counties had given the nomination to a state assemblywoman, Dede Scozzafava. National Republican trumpeters, led by radio talk show hosts Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, proclaimed that Scozzafava was too liberal on social issues, particularly abortion and gay marriage. Sarah Palin and money from conservatives all over the country poured in, and Scozzafava was effectively marginalized and quit the race, throwing what support she had to Owens. National party leaders were humiliated, but they quickly joined the push for Hoffman. In the name of party unity, they abandoned their own nominee.
Owens defeated Hoffman in a race close enough that national conservatives probably found encouragement in their drive to marginalize all moderate Republicans. (There are no liberal Republicans of the Rockefeller type to eject anymore. The last ones standing, Lincoln Chafee and Jim Leach, were defeated in 2006.)
The new New Right, I suspect, will be a major factor in the 2010 congressional election. Establishment Republicans are celebrating party victories in Virginia and New Jersey -- good for them -- but it is no longer a joke when folks say Limbaugh is the real leader of their party. The radio conservatives will almost certainly be challenging establishment Republicans across the country. When the new New Right cannot choose the Republican candidate, which is what happened in upstate New York, they are going to use or try to create third parties. That was easy under New York election laws because the state has had a small but real Conservative Party on the ballot since the early 1960s.
Santayana's quote about history is not the only relevant thought about what these off-off-year elections showed. It was Henry Clay who said he'd rather be right than be president. Clay was exaggerating more than a bit, but conservatives are going to demand that Republicans be Right before they can be president -- and history will repeat itself in defeat.

Nov. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Eric Cantor, the second-ranking Republican in the U.S. House, said his party needs to be inclusive and criticized some comments by talk-show host Rush Limbaugh as inappropriate.
“The Republican Party in its roots is a party of inclusion and we ought to be promoting that and making sure that voices are heard,” Cantor, of Virginia, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt,” airing today.
Cantor, when asked about Limbaugh’s comments that “Adolf Hitler, like Barack Obama, also ruled by dictate” and his comparison of the administration’s health-care logo to a swastika, said his comparisons were wrong.
“Do I condone the mention of Hitler in any discussion about politics?” Cantor said. “No, I don’t, because obviously that is something that conjures up images that frankly are not, I think, very helpful.”
He also took issue with some of the harsher rhetoric of Republican colleagues in the House.
Cantor, 46, said Republicans must stay unified if they are to win elections. “That’s the lesson learned” from the Nov. 3 Republican gubernatorial victories in New Jersey and Virginia, and the loss of a New York congressional seat in a race that divided the party, he said.

His comments about Limbaugh and other members of his party put him at odds with some party leaders. Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has also taken issue with Limbaugh’s comments, then relented.
Cantor was critical of Republicans such as Representative Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, who called the Democratic health plan a greater threat to America than terrorists, and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who took fellow Republican Olympia Snowe to task for voting with Democrats. Pawlenty later said the Maine senator is “absolutely welcome” in the party.

Ill. prosecutors seek journalism students' grades
CHICAGO – A Northwestern University professor and journalism students who spent three years investigating the case of a man convicted in the 1978 killing of a security guard believe they have evidence that shows prosecutors put the wrong man behind bars. But in the quest to prove his innocence, they may have to defend themselves, too.
Cook County prosecutors have outraged the university and the journalism community by issuing subpoenas to professor David Protess seeking his students' grades, his syllabus and their private e-mails. Prosecutors claim since the team was made up of students, they may have been under pressure to prove the case to get a good grade.

Yes, it is bad in this country when the government interferes with students doing legal research for those that cannot afford to prove their innocence.
It seems that if the prosecutors and defense lawyers would have done what these students did, the jails who have a lot less innocent people. It is all about money and not about obtaining the truth.
I am surprised that the University does not send it whole legal department into the courts to protect these students right to investigate the facts in those convicted unfailly.

On CBS last night the "female" newscaster says with a smile. "The health bill is dead". They don't have to worry with their multi-million dollar salaries. They can afford medical care but are trying to deny it to US.

O.K., New York Times?)
NOTHING DESCRIBES BETTER THE OVER-CONSCIENTIOUS DIVERSE UNITED STATES THAN THE NEW YORK TIMES CITING ANTI-MUSLIM PREJUDICE AGAINST HASAN WITHOUT VERIFYING THE SOURCE AND NOTHING CAN BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF MORE FREELY BY A FUMING IDIOT ON A PUBLIC MISSION. (This reminds me of 9/11 terrorists demanding their American lawyer from the U.S. Justice Department after publicly disrespecting U.S. Justice laws against murder; where even the New York Times is handing out free tissue against ‘any’ allegations of prejudice.)
Our U.S. Military Forces and our U.S. Public the most diverse in the world, and I have a very hard time believing that their was too much, if any, harsh prejudice launched against this person. Does this person have witnesses? Even if a few others were making fun of him, we cannot allow others (like some children in school) to think it is O.K. or tolerable to kill people after being harassed; no matter what self-important things they may believe.
OUR U.S. MILITARY ALLOWED A PERSON LIKE HASAN TO BE IN THE MILITARY ‘BECAUSE’ OUR MILITARY IS NOT PREJUDICED AGAINST MUSLIM’S AS HASAN SELFISHLY PUBLICLY SELF-ACCLAIMED. (There is no government control media hiding that knowledge from our American public that allows a group to spin any anti-American propaganda about prejudice otherwise.)
HASAN JUST WOULD NOT GIVE THE U.S. MILITARY ANY CREDIT FOR WHAT PUBLIC POSITION THE MILITARY GAVE HIM, AS HE HAS NOT GIVEN AMERICA’S WAYS AND LAWS AGAINST MURDER ANY RESPECT. (I am sure that there are some psychiatrists, who happen to be Muslim, who would have loved the position that the U.S. Military gave Hasan. It was obvious that Hasan did not appreciate what the U.S. Military gave him.)
I have not that much compassion for Hasan because all of us, including U.S. Soldiers, of different ethnicities are in these difficult wars too. There are no ‘understandable reason’s’ and excuses for what Hasan did, none.
