The former Maidenform plant around here was closed and those jobs were shipped overseas several years ago. The plant is still empty. Hanes is owned by Sara Lee, and THEY closed their plants here too. As did Fruit of the Loom.
ALL three of those companies are headquartered in Chicago, and just by closing a handful of plants here they were responsible for the loss of several thousand jobs in this area.

I try and imagine how much further down the USA would be---HAD by some horrific nightmare McCain and Palin had won! Economically, they would have continued Bush's policies that drove us here. What would the stock market be by now? How many more jobs would have been lost, because of no stimulus, no help to keep auto companies, etc going. How many more people would lose their health care. How much more accelerated would the Occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan be? How many additional US troop deaths would there have been? Would McCain have started back in with that building 14 US bases around the interior of Iraq? Would he have bombed Iran by now, starting WW III? Would the entire country and coasts of the USA have drilling rigs all set up all over ?
Would Palin have been out to other countries demanding they all get born again? Perhaps all of the other countries would no longer be even dealing with us, because of her ignorance.
It makes vomit come up in the back of my throat---to even imagine a McCain/Palin administration.
Remember that International newspaper that came out back when Bush won his 2nd election, that said "How can 60Million Americans be so Stupid"?

I, too, shudder to think what evils would've been wrought on this great nation of ours had Sen. McCain (R-AZ) been elected in 2008. It was conservative policies and ideology that got us into this mess.
But what we're seeing from the political right is indicative of their smallmindedness when it comes to a whole host of topics. They see a simple bow as the end to western democracy. I imagine they would really flake out and start riots if the POTUS followed the tradition of taking off his shoes before entering the building.
In short, the GOP has no regard for anyone else's customs or beliefs and this, in and of itself, should be the primary reason that no one ever votes for one again. I gave Harpo a tongue in cheek shot about the POTUS pistol whipping the Japanese emperor yet, there are elements of American society who would've had him do just that. They have no regard for their fellow humans. Hell, they have no regard for their fellow Americans.
But alas, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Most of them who feel this way hide behind their keyboards to bitch and moan yet won't utter a peep in public. The ones brave enough to make themselves look like a fool to the rest of the planet end up at a Fox "News" sponsored tea party event waving nonsensical signs.

Gates blocks abuse photos release
The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has blocked the publication of further images of US soldiers abusing foreign detainees.
The US administration filed a request with the Supreme Court late on Friday preventing the release of the photos.
The order refers to some 40 images, including some of prisoners being abused in Afghanistan and Iraq.

CNN reporter detained in Shanghai over Obama-Mao T-shirt

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A CNN correspondent said Monday she was detained by Chinese security guards in Shanghai for two hours for displaying a T-shirt on camera depicting US President Barack Obama as Mao Zedong.Emily Chang, a Beijing-based correspondent for the US television network, said in a blog post on CNN.com that she hunted down the shirt after hearing they had been banned amid fears they "may offend the American president."
The shirt shows Obama, who is making his first visit to China as president, in a Red Army uniform staring into the distance in a pose made famous by the former Chinese leader.
The front of the shirt says "Serve the People" in Chinese, Chang said. "Oba-Mao" is written on the back in English.
Chang said she held the shirt up to the camera while filming a story in a Shanghai market.
"Two security guards happened to pass by at the moment I announced to the camera: 'This is the T-shirt everybody is talking about,'" she said.
"And that was it. They scrambled towards us and tried to pry the shirt out of my hands," Chang said. "I didn't give in.
"There was a bit of yelling and quite a scuffle," she said, adding that CNN "had everything on tape."
"We ended up being detained for two hours in the cold, maze of a market," she said. "A crowd gathered round. More security and then police showed up.
"They wanted our press cards, our passports, but most of all, they wanted the shirt," she said. "Finally, they let us go. Phew!"
Chang refused to surrender the offending shirt and joked that a number of jealous White House and CNN colleagues had tried to "bribe" her for it.

To read Sarah Palin's shockingly shallow Going Rogue, one is immediately struck by how nasty and vindictive Palin is, and that her book is little more than a veiled mechanism for settling scores with old foes who have triumphed over her throughout Palin's lifetime.
Is Palin really going rogue? Hardly. Getting even is more like it.
Palin's biggest score to settle is with those senior advisers--Republicans all--in the John McCain campaign, on whose shoulders Palin lays the blame for her failed and tortured debut on the American political stage last fall. Most notable among them, of course, is "The Bullet," Steve Schmidt, who took over McCain's teetering campaign in July of 2008 and was a staunch advocate of Palin's selection as McCain's running mate.
He has told the Huffington Post that Palin's allegations against the McCain campaign are "total fiction."
Schmidt now joins a host of former McCain staffers, including Mark Salter and Nicolle Wallace, who have challenged the veracity of Palin's book even before it hits the streets on Tuesday. One McCain aide who worked closely with Palin and who "liked her personally" described Palin's account of the campaign as "blatantly and absolutely inaccurate."
McCain aides are shocked-- though not entirely surprised--by Palin's allegations. They caught enough of her act during the 60-plus days of her campaign sojourn to know that she plays "fast and loose with the truth."

Georgia Lottery CEO Gets $204,034 Bonus

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Lottery Corp. says its employees received $2.75 million in bonuses this year, up by more than 8 percent from 2008.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that CEO Margaret DeFrancisco received a $204,034 bonus, up from $150,000 in 2008. She also received $286,000 in salary, unchanged from a year ago.

60 Minutes did a great story yesterday about the culture in Iraq which first reported the Noah's Ark story like 600 years before the Hebrews. Saddam tried to drive their descendents into extinction by diverting water from the region with some of the most elaborate canals ever built.
It's a shame so much knowledge and effort is always put into furthering war and bigotry in the world instead of creating infrastructure projects for the common good. Just look at us. We are frittering away all our resources half way around the world to put money in the pockets of war profiteers instead of addressing our domestic needs.

Glenn Beck's tirades about tenuous connections have already faced a fair share of ridicule, but his boss, Rupert Murdoch, must get a little nervous every time Beck decries someone as a communist bane to the U.S. As The New York Times pointed out in great detail, Murdoch has more than a couple of ties to Chinese communists, ties that appear to permeate most aspects of his life.
Sure, he is now married to a woman from mainland China, one who used to work for his Star TV broadcasting group from Hong Kong, but those were not the only inroads he made with the country. He has also worked together with the state in matters of censorship and has come out in defense of policies set forth by China's political leaders. Indeed, other companies had to make sacrifices in order to make things work in China, but based on what his former employees have stated, none would acquiesce as easily as Murdoch.
In fact, Murdoch went even further to support the Communist agenda. He had one of his subsidiaries, HarperCollins, publish a book about Deng Xiaoping, a major political force in the history of Communist China, in the hopes of garnering further trust from his would-be friends there. Written by Xiaoping's daughter, Murdoch held a large party in New York for the release, but it, nonetheless, it sold poorly. Given its poor sales, and Murdoch's reaching out to Xiaoping, who was still a senior leader in China at the time, it appeared a pretty overt attempt to placate the Chinese. That was certainly bad enough on its own, especially with parts of the book that seemed surprisingly jingoistic, but in covering one of the most pivotal international incidents ever, Murdoch suspiciously ended Star TV's ties to BBC News after the latter repeatedly showed a man facing down a tank in Tiananmen Square against Murdoch's wishes. He explained it away as a business decision. Unsurprisingly, the supreme leader would eventually laud his "objective" coverage of Chinese politics...

Three prominent conservatives warned in a joint statement against Republican "scaremongering" on Guantanamo Bay detainees, saying the prison in Thomson, Illinois would be fine to handle them.
Former Republican Congressman and Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr, David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union and Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, have teamed up to urge the Gitmo detainees be taken to the U.S.
"The scaremongering about these issues should stop," Barr, Keene and Norquist wrote.
"Civilian federal courts are the proper forum for terrorism cases," they wrote. "Civilian prisons are the safe, cost effective and appropriate venue to hold persons in federal courts."

Poll: Americans Don't Like Sarah Palin
A new ABC/Washington Post poll finds that Americans still do not like Sarah Palin, who is kicking off her Going Rogue book tour with a taped interview airing today on the Oprah Winfrey show.
The poll finds that a majority of Americans, 52% of respondents, have an unfavorable opinion of her, compared to only 43% favorable.
In addition, respondents were asked this question: "Regardless of whether or not you'd vote for her, do you think Palin is or is not qualified to serve as president?" The numbers: qualified 38%, not qualified 60%.
In addition, 53% say they would definitely not vote for her. Only 9% would definitely vote for her, and 37% would consider it (those people are likely Republicans and GOP-leaners who want to see all the options).

Our fascist radio station this morning had mike crappo, from Idiotho, herefater referred to as asshole. He was bitching about government run health care.
The fascist announcer asked him about Medicare and the fact that doctors are leaving. Asshole announced that medicare is going broke because doctors don't want to be in a government run program.
(The fact is, there was a bill before Congress which was voted NO by every damn asshole repug. The bill would have increased the fees paid by Medicare to the doctors and would have increased the fees paid to doctors under the Veterans program.)
The announcer asked him about bipartisonship.
Asshole answered that Pelosi and Reid haven't given them a chance to introduce anything before it is shot down.
(The fact is that, if this is true, then why did they do not allow the Democrats to even speak in the Congress when they ruled the roost.)
Then the fascist announcer asked him about his plan to lower the cost of medical care. Asshole said there are all kinds of ways to lower the cost of medical care.
(What is your plan asshole. Is it because you
don't have one?)
This asshole needs to be taken out to the woodshed and given the facts of life.

I must say that Katy Couric has it right. She is actually reporting the news. This morning she said that the government wants to bring shake mohammed to New York for trial and that ghouliani is against it. She said that some people are against it.
Then she ended saying that it is the right thing to do and will be welcomed by the victims of 9/11.
Then the CBS morning show with that bald headed asshole who is obviously a fascist pig repug was saying that Obama's poll numbers are down from 56% to 53%. Whoop de doo. Then he spoke of the poll numbers for Afghanistan and they are down slightly. He took great glee in reporting this. "Obama is too slow making a decision about Afghanistan).

I have an Afghani friend in California who I talked with yesterday. I didn't get a chance to talk about the situation because this was a business call but he was telling me once how much he hated the Russians because they killed his parents. I didn't get a chance to discuss the situation with him but I believe he would be against us killing any more of his people. He is not one of the wacko muslims and is an engineer.
CBS did run a piece on the tv news last night about how people are suffering for lack of health care right here in the United States of America.

Producer Prices Up 0.3% in October

U.S. producer prices rose more slowly than expected in October despite a rebound in food and energy costs, according to a government report on Tuesday that pointed to tame inflation pressures.
The Labor Department said the seasonally adjusted index for prices paid at the farm and factory gate rose 0.3 percent following a 0.6 percent drop in September.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected producer prices to increase by 0.5 percent last month. Compared with the same period last year, producer prices were 1.9 percent lower in October, a touch softer than market expectations for a 1.8 percent drop.
Excess economic slack following the worst U.S. recession in 70 years has largely suppressed inflation but there are fears that massive efforts by both the government and the Federal Reserve to restore growth could ignite price pressures in the future.
The department said that gasoline prices rose 1.9 percent last month and were down 16 percent versus a year ago. Finished consumer foods rose 1.6 percent on the month, the largest gain since February 2007, and were down 2.7 percent compared to October last year.
Core producer prices, which exclude food and energy costs, unexpectedly dropped 0.6 percent last month — the largest decline since July 2006 — after slipping 0.1 percent in September. The core index had been forecast to rise 0.1 percent in October.
The core producer price index was 0.7 percent higher measured on a year-on-year basis, versus a forecast for a 1.4 percent rise. The core index excluding cars and light trucks rose 0.1 percent from September. Light motor truck prices fell 5.2 percent in October, the biggest drop since October 2006.

BECAUSE the old fool never invested in anything in his life, he does not understand that what he is quoting is a PAPER increase. It is what happened to stocks a couple years ago---those that had been valued at high amounts per share, suddenly dropped the value, some overnight, and the new value was about 40% or more less than it had been. Stevie will sit there and hold onto this stuff, until it is once again back in the toilet, where gold and silver always end up.
Stevie should have an advisor, but thinks he is too smart to let someone else tell him what to do.
