THE PUBLIC OPTION PREMIUM PRICE WILL ACT AS THE COMPETITIVE FOREIGN AUTO PRICE THAT KEEPS AMERICAN AUTO PRICES DOWN BY KEEPING THE PRICE OF INSURANCE DOWN.

(So the public option may well be worth the investment to the taxpayers, businesses and consumers.)

THE PUBLIC OPTION WILL GIVE ANOTHER OPTION TO THE UNEMPLOYED AND DISABLED OTHER THAN STATE MEDICAID OR FEDERAL FUNDED SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY. So these people will not be afraid of losing their only health insurance (Medicaid and Medicare) if they return to work in the current economy where many businesses are not offering health care.

"DEMS, SAYS SCREW YOU PUGS". WE DON"T NEED YOU.

WASHINGTON - A leading Senate Democrat said Monday his party is determined to push through a health care overhaul bill with or without Republican support because the "system is broken."

"We prefer to go at it with Republicans if we can reach compromises in some areas," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "But we're not going to not pass a bill."

Schumer dueled with Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison on a network morning news show in the wake of a key Senate vote Saturday night that advanced a 10-year, $959 billion health bill to full debate. Hutchison argued that "you're going to put taxes and mandates on business" that would be a drag on an economy still struggling to recover from recession.

Congressional Democrats are trying to resolve differences within their rank and file over abortion, taxes and letting the government sell health insurance as a competitor with private insurers. Those are all crucial policy questions, and House and Senate Democrats have taken conflicting approaches.

Appearing on NBC's "Today" show Monday, Schumer said, "We all know we have to give a little. ... If we don't do anything, that is the worst situation, and we have a good bill." He said lawmakers must come together because "the health care system is broken."

Schumer argued that Republican critics "haven't put any alternative on the floor."

Hutchison called it "a terrible idea at this time." She said that Republicans "have put alternatives on the floor," including individual tax credits that would not include cutting Medicare and permitting a government takeover of the health care system.

The Democratic measures would leave 12 million or more eligible Americans uninsured. Many middle-class families who'd now be required to buy coverage would still find the premiums a stretch, even with government aid. A new federal fund to provide temporary coverage for people with health problems would quickly run out of cash.

For now, these bread-and-butter concerns take a back seat to more pressing issues for Democratic lawmakers trying to deliver on President Barack Obama's signature issue.

The House passed its health care bill 220-215 earlier this month. The Senate cleared the way Saturday for debate on legislation unveiled by Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. The bill, a compromise between two committee-passed versions, could undergo significant changes as senators amend it during weeks of arduous debate ahead.

Both bills would require all Americans to carry health insurance, with government help to make premiums more affordable. They would ban insurance companies from denying coverage or charging more to people with health problems. They would set up new insurance markets for those who now have the hardest time finding and keeping coverage _ self-employed people and small businesses. Americans insured through big employer plans would gain new consumer protections but wouldn't face major changes. Seniors would get better prescription coverage.

"For the first time, we're going to allow American consumers to be involved in a buyers' market for health insurance," said Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., one of the authors of the Senate bill. "This Congress is going to pass, and this president is going to sign, a national health care program for all Americans."

Before any signing ceremony, lawmakers must clear some tall hurdles.

On abortion funding, the House adopted strict limitations as the price for getting anti-abortion Democrats to vote for the final bill. Abortion rights supporters are backing Reid's approach in the Senate bill, which tries to preserve coverage for abortion while stipulating that federal dollars may not be used except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.

In the end, Reid may have to bend. Catholic bishops say they can't accept his approach because it would let federally subsidized plans cover abortion. They vow to oppose the health care bill unless, like the House, the Senate enacts stronger language. Democratic senators opposed to abortion are already threatening a battle.

On financing, the House relies mainly on an income tax hike for upper-earners to pay for expanded coverage. The Senate opted for a tax on high-cost insurance plans, a Medicare payroll tax hike on the wealthy and fees on medical industries. In polls, the House approach is more popular. The Obama administration has signaled it likes the Senate's insurance tax.

That leaves the controversy over a creating a government health plan to compete with the insurance industry. It has dominated the debate and remains unresolved.

Both House and Senate bills now provide for a government insurance plan, but Reid's bill would let states opt out. It's not clear that Reid has the votes. He may be able to get a compromise to allow a government plan only if, after a reasonable time, insurance companies fail to deliver lower premiums.

Resolving these policy issues would be a historic accomplishment for Democrats. But the bill could still leave consumers feeling a little

Morning Dems.

NO TROLLS ALLOWED!!

4
chassie321 on November 23, 2009 at 10:10 AM

I think all size businesses should be required to pay a certain percentage towards purchasing their employees health care or be taxed almost the same. However, I do not think it is fair for the government to tax businesses for health care without the government offering businesses some other kind of option that they can afford, where businesses might be able to afford to pay even more than the tax, which could keep the public option cost down.

I am thinking that maybe we need some kind of a business option, in addition to the public option, where businesses share the cost of health care with their workers and the government to keep the general taxpayer cost for the public option down. (No business is going to hand me the bull crap that one day their business could not pay 100% towards their employee’s health care and the next day their business could not pay any percentage. Businesses can afford to pay, at least, something.)

Chassie321,

I do not know who or what you are referring to when you continually use the word ‘troll’s’, but if you are talking about Republican or Independent blogger’s, this is a free blog and anyone is invited, allowed or accepted here in the conversation.

Do you think certain people from the NRA are going to hurt us through the Internet, or what?

6
Hope4U on November 23, 2009 at 10:58 AM

Hope you didn't just fall off a turnip truck did You??

You know damn well who the Trolls are, if you don't that means that you don't read the blog. Maybe you just post, in mostly Caps, and run off, and never read.

And BTW i don't continually use the word trolls.

I usually call them assholes, pricks, felon's, Red Dogs, punks, and pugs. So KMA.

7
chassie321 on November 23, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Hope, I beg to differ with you.

the definition of an internet troll is:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion."

You have seen such people on here, who's only purpose is to attack, take us off message, provoke, and harass.

These are not Republicans with a right to free speech.

These are those Angry, Old White men you see out on the protest lines, screaming obsentities, holding up racist signs, trying to get us off topic.

We have had REAL Conservatives in the past, who have come in and had REAL debate with us, over our differing philosophies.

These were not the Trolls that Chassie is referring to.

8
PamB on November 23, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Hope, You see how the trolls post the Spoon fed Republican bullcrap, from Beck, Limbaugh, Coulter, plus leadership, on public option.

What on earth makes them think a Public option is FREE. What makes them think it is any different from any Insured plan, as to medical necessity, copays, deductibles, etc shows how truly gullible, naive, and sheeple they are.

Anyone with low income, is already covered under State Medicaid plans. (you see they did not even understnd the difference between Medicare and Medicaid)

So again, THESE are the sick little men who are known as trolls. All they are is laughable proving what losers they are in the Game of Life.

Don't these icebergs know they are supposed to COOLING, not WARMING and melting???

SYDNEY (AFP) – More than 100, and possibly hundreds, of Antarctic icebergs are floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has prompted a shipping warning, officials said on Monday.

An Australian Antarctic Division glaciologist said the ice chunks, spotted by satellite photography, had passed the Auckland Islands and were heading towards the main South Island, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) northeast.

Scientist Neal Young said more than 100 icebergs -- some measuring more than 200 metres (650 feet) across -- were seen in just one cluster, indicating there could be hundreds more.

He said they were the remains of a massive ice floe which split from the Antarctic as sea and air temperatures rise due to global warming.

"All of these have come from a larger one that was probably 30 square kilometres (11.6 square miles) in size when it left Antarctica," Young told AFP.

"It's done a long circuit around Antarctica and now the bigger parts of it are breaking up and producing smaller ones."

He said large numbers of icebergs had not floated this close to New Zealand since 2006, when a number came within 25 kilometres of the coastline -- the first such sighting since 1931.

"They're following the same tracks now up towards New Zealand. Whether they make it up to the South Island or not is difficult to tell," Young said.

KABUL – Bomb attacks and a firefight killed four U.S. troops in 24 hours in Afghanistan, the military said Monday, adding to the growing toll as NATO and the U.S. consider whether to send more forces to the war.

Also, a suicide bomber, targeting a police convoy, killed two civilian men and three children Monday afternoon in northern Kunduz province, the Afghan Interior Ministry said. Five others were wounded in the attack.

Three of the Americans died in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, NATO said in a statement. Two of them were killed in a bomb attack and the third in a separate firefight.

The statement said a bomb killed the fourth American in the east Monday.

The deaths bring the number of Americans killed in Afghanistan in November to 15. October was the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the eight-year war, with 58 dead.

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN, Associated Press Writer Christopher Bodeen, Associated Press Writer – Fri Nov 20, 4:14 pm ET
BEIJING – Washington's ambassador to Beijing hit out Friday at negative U.S. media coverage of President Barack Obama's visit to China, saying it failed to take into account important progress on many issues.

Although producing no breakthroughs on key issues, Obama's first state visit to the Asian giant that ended Wednesday was heralded by both sides as a success.

The trip was the top news story in China, drawing strong interest from the Chinese public who, surveys suggest, are largely positive in their view of the American president.

However, much of the U.S. media coverage was strongly negative, accusing Obama of failing to gain concessions on key issues such as Iran's nuclear program and climate change, as well as being weak on human rights.

Ambassador Jon Huntsman said the reports missed the fact that the visit had yielded important progress on cooperation in areas such as clean energy, military-to-military exchanges and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons.

"I attended all those meetings that President Obama had with Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao," Huntsman said, referring to the Chinese president and premier.

"I've got to say some of the reporting I saw afterward was off the mark. I saw sweeping comments about things that apparently weren't talked about, when they were discussed in great detail in the meetings," he said.

What Ever Happened to the Good Times the Tax-Cutters Promised?

Don't expect an answer from the ranters and ravers who frequent 'Tea Parties' — or the politicians who egg them on.

You don’t have to dig particularly deep, in the United States today, to find some striking similarities between today’s virulently anti-Obama “Tea Party” crowd and the media darlings who birthed the “Tax Revolt” phenomenon back in the late 1970s.

The Tax Revolters burst onto the national scene amid an inflation-battered economy. They blamed “big government” for what ailed America, and they offered a simple remedy: cut taxes. Lower taxes, they promised, would get average Americans back on track.

The Tea Party zealots have, like the Tax Revolters, also coalesced in tough economic times. They attack “big government,” too. They even make the same promises about taxes.

But the Tea Party types, so far at least, haven’t scored any early political success. The Tax Revolters did. In 1978, in a ballot-box stunner, they passed a statewide initiative in California known as Prop 13, an unprecedented cap on property taxes.

The Insincerity Of The Public Option Haters

When Sen. Joe Lieberman first announced he would filibuster any health care bill with a public option, I noted that he lied, falsely calling the public option an "entitlement program" that would be "trouble ... for the national debt." In fact, the public option is an "option," not an entitlement, which would help our federal government save money.

Yesterday on Meet The Press, Lieberman didn't exactly lie, but deployed -- as his Senate colleague Al Franken coined in his old radio program's "Wait, Wait, Don't Lie To Me" game show segment -- the "Weasel."

And Lieberman's Weasel brightly illuminates the blatant insincerity on the part of the crusaders against the public option.

Lieberman said on Meet The Press:

[The public option] won't even lower the cost of health insurance, which the advocates said it originally would, because the Congressional Budget Office has now said to us that the public option in Senator Reid's bill will actually charge more for insurance than the average charge by health insurance companies.
Yes, it's true that the CBO estimates that Reid's version of the public plan would end up offering premiums that are "somewhat higher than the average premiums for the private plans" it would compete against in the proposed health insurance "exchanges."

But Lieberman willfully leaves out two key pieces of information.

1. All insurance premiums would be reduced. The CBO also concluded that Reid's reform package, including the public option, would reduce the overall average premium for all plans in the exchanges, public or private. An earlier CBO report of the similarly structured House public option determined the mere existence of a public option "would place some downward pressure on the premiums of private plans".

2. The public option was weakened to appease insurance industry defenders like Lieberman. All year long conservatives, and some alleged "moderates," have accused the public option of being a Trojan Horse intended to decimate private insurance, not compete with it.

SC gov faces 37 ethics charges he broke state laws

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford faces 37 ethics charges he broke state laws limiting official use of airplanes and involving campaign money.

The details were released Monday by the State Ethics Commission. They came five days after the panel charged the governor without offering any specifics.

Sanford's lawyers have claimed the charges involve minor and technical aspects of the law.

The charges followed a probe into whether Sanford used state aircraft for personal and political trips, used pricey airline seats despite low-cost travel requirements and reimbursed himself with campaign cash.

Sanford has been under scrutiny since he vanished for five days over the summer, reappearing to tearfully admit to an extramarital affair with a woman he later called his "soul mate."

Hi, Pam.

Did Christ refuse communion to Judas? Of course, he didn't. Christanity is about bonding, forgiveness, and joy.

Too many of these angry old priests have communion confused with some pagan ritual where they can assign guilt and withhold salvation. They don't have the authority. They are only servants of the Lord.

Just as our Senators are public servants. They don't have the authority to withhold debate, stop votes, or thwart the will of the majority.

Those who purposely impose their will instead of allowing the bonds between peoples to prevail are making it more difficult for the Almighty to do His work. They feel isolated and cursed...because they are.

On Monday, a federal judge in Minneapolis plans to unseal documents charging up to eight people with terror-related offenses connected to the recruitment of young Somali-Americans by a terrorist group in Somalia. The FBI believes these people helped some two dozen Somali Americans from the Twin Cities join a terrorist group in Somalia called al Shabab. Five Minnesotans who joined the group in Somalia have already died in fighting. The FBI, meanwhile, has already arrested and charged six other people with terror-related crimes.

So when is Congress going to legislate the definition of an American company privileged to have access to our markets and pay lower taxes? There should be an immediate surcharge levied on any company that isn't American.

Imho, if more than 50% of a company's employees are foreign, it isn't American any longer. If more than 50% of it's profits are sent to foreign country, it isn't American. If it doesn't invest more than 50% of its profits back into its operations in this country, it isn't American.

If these frauds are proud to be Americans, let's see them prove it in their pocketbooks.

Multi-nationals corporations are nothing less than foreign economic terrorists. American politicians who cooperate with them are not Americans either. They should be given the choice of giving up their citizenship and moving overseas or they being convicted of treason.

We really need to start fighting back against the Economic War of Terror that has been declared on this country and the traitors within who made it so easy.

Bill Corcoran: Do Republicans Know What It's Like in the ER?

11/23/2009
* Guest Contribution

To: Fox and Friends

I hope NONE of you EVER have to visit an emergency room if the health care plan fails because you are going to find out the poor and uninsured in our country use an emergency room like a visit to a doctor's office.

Two months ago, I was suffering from severe chest pains and went to a Level One Trauma Hospital in the Chicago area and had to wait NINE HOURS before they admitted me and then they diagnosed my condition wrong.

Four days later, I had two stents put in my heart and the cardiologist told me I had a 99% blockage in the main left artery and I had "dodged a bullet."

I told the doctor I damn near died waiting NINE hours to be admitted and I made it abundantly clear that something has to be done about our health care system, now ranked 37th in the world behind even Costa Rica.

I guess Republicans are so healthy they never have a problem or ever have to go to an ER.

However, the Republicans might like to think long and hard at our health care system because some day either them or one of their family will be rushed to an ER and have to wait NINE hours just to be taken care of, and then there is the strong possibility they won't be treated for what really brought them to the ER in the first place because the doctors and nurses in the ER are totally overworked taking care of poor people who don't have insurance and use the ER like a visit to a doctor.

Look beyond your own nose, Fox News people.

Try just ONCE to care about someone other than yourself.

Carl Levin Has A Surefire Way To End The War: Tax The Rich To Pay For It

“For the last year, as we’ve struggled to pass health care reform, we’ve been told that we have to pay for the bill-- and the cost over the next decade will be about a trillion dollars,” the three lawmakers said in a joint statement. “Now the president is being asked to consider an enlarged counterinsurgency effort in Afghanistan, which proponents tell us will take at least a decade and would also cost about a trillion dollars. But unlike the health care bill, that would not be paid for. We believe that’s wrong.”

Survey of Pakistan’s Young Predicts ‘Disaster’ if Their Needs Aren’t Addressed

By SABRINA TAVERNISE
Published: November 21, 2009

LAHORE, Pakistan — Pakistan will face a “demographic disaster” if it does not address the needs of its young generation, the largest in the country’s history, whose views reflect a deep disillusionment with government and democracy, according to a report released here on Saturday.

The report, commissioned by the British Council and conducted by the Nielsen research company, drew a picture of a deeply frustrated young generation that feels abandoned by its government and despondent about its future.

An overwhelming majority of young Pakistanis say their country is headed in the wrong direction, the report said, and only 1 in 10 has confidence in the government. Most see themselves as Muslim first and Pakistani second, and they are now entering a work force in which the lion’s share cannot find jobs, a potentially volatile situation if the government cannot address its concerns...

hmmmmm, yes, isn't this just too coincidental that these 'leaks' came out right before the Copenhagen talks? Now there are quite a few nuts out there, just like Stevieboy, who would not think twice about twisting information:

"The Met Office confirmed that none of its own computers has come under attack from hackers and said that it would not call for an inquiry.

A spokesman at the Met Office, which jointly produces global temperature datasets with the Climate Research Unit, said there was no need for an inquiry. "If you look at the emails, there isn't any evidence that the data was falsified and there's no evidence that climate change is a hoax. It's a shame that some of the sceptics have had to take this rather shallow attempt to discredit robust science undertaken by some of the world's most respected scientists. The bottom line is that temperatures continue to rise and humans are responsible for it. We have every confidence in the science and the various datasets we use. The peer-review process is as robust as it could possibly be. It's no surprise, with the Copenhagen talks just days away, that this has happened now."

Andy Atkins, Friends of the Earth's executive director, also dismissed calls for an inquiry. He said: "Calls for an inquiry look suspiciously like an attempt to cast doubt on the science of climate change ahead of crucial UN negotiations. The overwhelming majority of climate scientists believe that climate change is happening, that it is man-made, and that it poses a major threat to people across the planet. We can't afford to be distracted from the need for urgent action to combat global warming – rich countries must lead the way by agreeing to slash their emissions when they meet in Copenhagen next month."

Yes, we certainly need an investigation----into what Radical, Right Wing group had their hands in this evil attempt to make it look like climate change/global warming is not real!!!

World's largest ice sheet melting faster than expectedEast Antarctic sheet shedding 57bn tonnes of ice a year and contributing to sea level rises, according to Nasa aerial survey

The world's largest ice sheet has started to melt along its coastal fringes, raising fears that global sea levels will rise faster than scientists expected.

The East Antarctic ice sheet, which makes up three-quarters of the continent's 14,000 sq km, is losing around 57bn tonnes of ice a year into surrounding waters, according to a satellite survey of the region.

Scientists had thought the ice sheet was reasonably stable, but measurements taken from Nasa's gravity recovery and climate experiment (Grace) show that it started to lose ice steadily from 2006.

The measurements suggest the polar continent could soon contribute more to global sea level rises than Greenland, which is shedding more than 250bn tonnes of ice a year, adding 0.7mm to annual sea level rises.

Satellite data from the whole of Antarctica show the region is now losing around 190bn tonnes of ice a year. Uncertainties in the measurements mean the true ice loss could be between 113bn and 267bn tonnes.

"If the current trend continues or gets worse, Antarctica could become the largest contributor to sea level rises in the world. It could start to lose more ice than Greenland within a few years," said Jianli Chen, of the University of Texas at Austin.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/nov/22/east-antarctic-ice-sheet-nasa

NOW I AM SITTING HERE WONDERING----WHEN THERE IS NO LONGER ANY NORTH POLE, ANY SOUTH POLE, ANY FROZEN GREENLAND, ANY GLACIERS, WHAT WILL THE REPUG SKEPTICS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING? WILL THEY STILL SAY THE EARTH IS IN A COOLING TREND??? WILL THEY MAKE UP MORE SILLY STORIES? WILL THE SKEPTICS STILL BE OUT THERE HACKING INTO EMAILS, AND DISTORTING INFORMATION?

Mr. Thomasssss, I see here your first posts back right after the 2006 elections, under first the name of MN Thomass, then you moved to this HARPO name, show a beligerence, an arrogance, an attempt to discredit Democratic wins, and Democrats . Your frustration and sour grapes over your Republican loss turned your visits to the DNC blog into a hate fest, attacks, racist views, homophobic remarks. Now Mr. thomasss, you are alleging that somehow these posts you are showing us here, are somehow those that the DNC themselves plotted against you, and posted under your name?

Were that to be true, Mr. Thomasss, WHY would you continue to troll a blog where you claim there were these illigitimate acts against your person? That your Phony anonymous name was somehow so valuable, that moderators would choose to use it?

I believe Mr. Thomasss, that by your very return visits to a blog where you had no business going, not wanted, finds that you are not a very Prudent nor intelligent man. Find something more positive to do with your life, Mr. thomassss.

Case dismissed !

beck the asshole is going to run for president in 2012. He has a 100 year plan just like Red China. The first thing he will do is eliminate the IRS. The next thing he will is bring home all our troops from Iraq and Iran.

This guy is obviously a commie asshole like hannity.

A woman was challenging hannity today about the need for health care. His usual answer is that when taxes are raised no one will make anything anymore, there won't be any jobs and the business people will join the rest of America and become deadbeats. Hell, this is what is happening under the repukes. All our jobs have gone overseas and employers don't pay shit.

If business people are just in it for the money then they deserve to be deprived of their illicit gains by the IRS. I'm sure all business men will quit and join the ranks of the unemployed.

I would say that a large proportion of business people don't worship at the altar of money and are in it for the reward of contributing to society and the common good. If they are money grubbing pricks like hannity and his lot then they deserve to be paupers.

Chicago on November 23, 2009 at 07:18 PM

Top Priority
Published: Monday, 23 Nov 2009 | 7:21 PM ET Reuters

President Barack Obama assured Americans on Monday that boosting jobs was a top priority, but gave no specifics about how to meet this goal that some economists say warrants more government spending.

The White House said separately that all "sensible and reasonable measures" would be considered to encourage employment, but also stressed that it must be balanced with the need for the United States to tackle record budget deficits.

"Our economy is growing again for the first time in more than a year," Obama told reporters after a meeting with his Cabinet. "We cannot be sit back and be satisfied given the extraordinarily high unemployment levels that we have seen."

U.S. unemployment is at a 26-year high of 10.2 percent and may get worse before it improves, despite the economy's swing back to positive growth in the third quarter of 2009.

"This has been a very difficult year, and a lot of people out there are having a very, very tough time," Obama said, after instructing his Cabinet to relax a little bit this week over the Thanksgiving holiday, and then buckle down to work.

Obama, whose once-lofty public approval ratings have been hurt by the economy and high jobless numbers since he took office in January, has convened a jobs forum on Dec. 3 to review other measures to boost payrolls.

He said the forum would focus on how to lift U.S. exports and infrastructure spending and create green jobs.

Obama has also said he is interested in solutions that would not cost much public money, warning that adding to the U.S. debt could trigger a double-dip recession.

Others think the government should do more spending on top of a $787 billion emergency stimulus package that Obama signed in February, although much of that money is still in the process of being spent.

The AFL-CIO labor federation has urged that he consider extending unemployment insurance again. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman wrote in The New York Times on Monday that the biggest risk was the government doing too little to stimulate growth, not too much.

Noting that many U.S. businesses were now making good profits, Obama said that reflected cost-cutting rather than wider demand in the economy, generating surging U.S. productivity that has not yet led to hiring.

"All these present some significant challenges in terms of us creating more jobs in this economy," Obama said, adding that job creation normally lagged economic growth and that the aim of the jobs forum would be to bridge that gap.

"We don't want to wait. We want to see if we can accelerate it," he said

American catholics don't take kindly to interference from rome. American catholics are very independent and do not like this crap from the bishops. They can't even get their facts straight. Johnne,
I don't think the Catholic Church should be shunned. It is a very large organization and much of it does a great deal of good. I do believe the IRS needs to sit down with Rev. Thomas Tobin of Providence RI and explain that the Catholic Church enjoys tax exempt status BECAUSE it is a religious organization. As a religious organization, it cannot become involved in politics or government. It's the old "seperation of church and state" thing. If the church, through its official (Rev. Tobin) continues to attempt to coerce elected officials to support or defeat legislation, it will have that tax exempt status REVOKED. And if they did, we would not have a deficit any more.

83
Chicago on November 23, 2009 at 08:38 PM

Good evening, all.

Hi, Chassie.

Matthews got this one right. The Church doesn't have the authority to dictate how a public official votes on sectarian law.

It can issue its concern and try to persuade its flock, but where does it get off thinking it can blackmail and threaten public officials? That's acting like the Ayatollahs in Iran...or Al Capone. What next? Is the Church going to send out the Swiss Guard to act as their enforcers?

But seriously, what does the Bishop think he is accomplishing? Kennedy can take communion in almost any Christian church and be welcomed with open arms. As a former Catholic, I can attest to it.

This assault on Kennedy just raises more questions about the men who are running a church which sheltered and covered up for priests who were abusing children. Did the bishops stop any of them from taking communion?

hello to all my friends, sandy, johne, chicago, chassie and marymac!

can't stay around tonight, I have a big meeting I had to attend tomorrow and I need to be rested and ready to go!

Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. Hi John, good to see ya to, all churches need to stay out of politics, whatever the religion is.

Chassie: I shut down the internet at home. I've been so busy that I haven't had time to use it. Right now, I'm at work and monitoring an e-commerce site. That's the reason that I am able to be here. I've got some auto-alerts set up to notify me when I need to check on something. I have high speed here.
Hi Sandy and Esme.
I complete agree with all of you that the separate of church and state should be absolute. Without it, neither will have any degree of purity and all statements and positions will be suspect as having been influenced one by the other. It's better for both and for all concerned.

I can attest to that, too. Your advice and wise counsel helped make me a very effective volunteer for several candidates in the past four years.

How you doing, Essie? Is everyone coming to your house this year for Thanksgiving? Or are the girls going to host and let Grandma occupy the children while they cook?

I hope St. Louis is treating you well. I was disappointed in our Cardinals and their poor showing in the post season.

Evening Essie, MaryMac and Sandy,

Don't eat too much turkey. We have a lot to be thankful for. We got rid of chimp and cheney. There is only one thing left to do and I am confident that that deed will be done after President Obama pulls us out of the Great Republican Depression of 2009. I will be very thankful when justice is served and they are roasted on a spit along with all their repuke lock-steppers in Congress. Let's make them pay through the nose.

The trolls are not allowed to celebrate Thanksgiving.

95
johhne on November 23, 2009 at 09:00 PM

Did anyone hear Olbermann talking about the new witness test that the Republicans are going to make all their candidates take?

Ronald Reagan would have flunked six out of the ten points. How did Olbermann put it? Reagan would have had to rejoin the Democratic Party.

It seems like a lot of Republicans are being forced into our party by the Far Right. You'd think some of these Blue Dogs would appreciate our support and try to reach an accommodation on the major problems that are hurting our citizens.

Maybe they will on healthcare? We all know what the alternative is...doing nothing and watching the whole system fail just like the economy did last year.

I am beginning to think that the Democrats need to now stand their ground. If the four conserva-dems choose to side with the repelicans and suppor the fillibuster, then they should get no Democratic funding and should be challenged in primaries. The Democrats should run for 2010 with their position being they need a larger majority to pass health care. The people want it. The repelicans are voting as a block against it. This may well be the new wedge issue. Maybe we should use it in our favor. If you are for health care reform, vote Democrat. If you are against health care reform, vote repelican.
The only concern would be the people that are suffering that need health care reform now.

Chicago, Dufus reminds me of the idiot, sitting on a bar stool in a bar, having a conversation with the guy next to him, about Viet Nam. It was a hot conversation, Dufus gets pissed and chops him in the throat and said karate chop Viet Nam 1967. I hope Sarah Palin runs for president in 2012. It will be terrible for the repelicans. I don't think she will. She knows she is too stupid to be president. The last time we had a stupid president (Bush) it was a disaster for the country.

Sarah is driven by greed. She can make more money leveraging the stupidity of the conservatives. Just look at what she has done recently. She quit her job as Gov. of Alaska and started a speaking tour. Then she hired someone to write a book for her. Now she is on a book tour. Unless the book is a complete failure, she will make millions. The conservatives will pay for it and she will make millions. Just look at how Man Coulter has made money. It is the same thing. The stupid conservatives will pay real money to read a simple book that supports what they ALREADY believe. Sarah will get rich. She is not going to want to work for $400,000 per year when she can make millions off of the stupid conservative repelicans.

126
chassie321 on November 23, 2009 at 10:58 PM

Chassie,
The other reason Sarah won't run is Levi. Did you notice she did not mention him in her book? Why? Because Levi has dirt on her. He has let her know he won't use that dirt against her unless she continues to rip on him. After he said that, she stopped.

If Sarah runs, Levi's "dirt" will be bought. There will be big money offered for that dirt and Sarah knows Levi will sell the dirt to buy the farm.

Sarah ain't gonna run, but I wish she would. It will probably be enough if she tries to be king-maker. That should be sufficient to split off enough of the base to insure a Democratic victory.

When George W. Bush was President, he made a surprise visit to serve Thanksgiving Day dinner to soldiers deployed overseas. One reporter covering the story thought that some might save their meal as a souvenir, explaining, “It’s not often that anyone is served by the President.”

All elected officials are public servants—in a global, symbolic way—so they are always serving. So it seems that an act of service should not have been one of the biggest news items of the day.

Many people have a genuine desire to serve others, but for some, service is really self-serving. This was true when Jesus was training His disciples. They were under the impression that following Him would make them great.

But Jesus quickly set them straight: “Those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you” (Mark 10:42-43). Jesus made it clear to them that they were in training to become servants: “Whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all” (v.44).

We can sign up for any number of leadership training seminars, but the only good leaders are those who are first and foremost good servants. — Julie Ackerman Link

They truly lead who lead by love,
And humbly serve the Lord;
Their lives will bear the Spirit’s fruit
And magnify His Word. —D. De Haan

A good leader is a good servant.

The White House said on Monday it was reviewing options to spur economic activity and job creation, but stressed any action would be taken in the context of the fiscal challenges facing the country.
"We're going to work with members of Congress to try to come up with sensible and reasonable measures that might spur economic growth. I know those conversations continue," White House press spokesman Robert Gibbs told a daily news briefing.
"Before we can create jobs we have to have economic growth that is on the positive side of the ledger," Gibbs said, noting that the economy only began growing again in the third quarter, after suffering the worst recession in 70 years.

good morning Dems. another letter to editor published in morning paper:

"I read the Courant article about "Loyal to Dodd, But With Doubts" with some skepticism.

I have not seen Senator Dodd found guilty in a court of law for any of his actions. I have seen the Senate Ethics committee find him innocent of any ethical wrongdoings.
I have seen the many things that Senator Dodd (unlike Lieberman) has done for this State over the last 20 years, and I see nothing in his qualifications to say he will not continue to be a good Senator for this State.

Even the poll on Doubter's votes for "Leadership Qualities" find that 61% know that he is and has been a good leader.

When you weigh the alternative, I don't think there can be any doubt at all. I cannot think of anything more destructive to this State than a Republican Senator would be.

Gingrich, Palin, GOP Offer Magic Jobs Solution: More Tax Cuts Now!

(Image: Jared Rodriguez / t r u t h o u t; Adapted: Bruce Tuten, christopherleonard, BOSSoNe0013)
With the economy still reeling from unemployment at 10.2 percent , Democrats and progressives are battling a barrage of GOP-driven misinformation about the first $787 billion stimulus plan as they look to create a new, targeted, fast-acting jobs program, possibly before Christmas. Aiming to cash in - literally - on growing public anger over joblessness, Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich separately returned last week to the Republican nostrum of wide-ranging tax cuts, mostly for the rich, as the answer to every problem under the sun - in this case, unemployment. Yet as economist Lawrence Mishel, the director of the progressive Economic Policy Institute, observed, "These are tried and failed policies. We already lowered the capital gains tax, lowered corporate tax rates, lowered inheritance taxes under George W. and it's absurd to believe that somehow this would stimulate jobs. They're not even related to jobs." The new GOP mantra that the first Obama stimulus package was a waste of money comes against a growing consensus among centrist economists and analysts that the $787 billion package has had a positive effect, saving or creating about a million jobs. That's been the impact - although it is not large enough to satisfy progressives, since only a third of the stimulus money funded direct job creation. On Saturday, The New York Times reported: New Consensus Sees Stimulus Package as Worthy Step Now that unemployment has topped 10 percent, some liberal-leaning economists see confirmation of their warnings that the $787 billion stimulus package President Obama signed into law last February was way too small. The economy needs a second big infusion, they say. No, some conservative-leaning economists counter, we were right: The package has been wasteful, ineffectual and even harmful to the extent that it adds to the nation's debt and crowds out private-sector borrowing. These long-running arguments have flared now that the White House and Congressional leaders are talking about a new "jobs bill." But with roughly a quarter of the stimulus money out the door after nine months, the accumulation of hard data and real-life experience has allowed more dispassionate analysts to reach a consensus that the stimulus package, messy as it is, is working. The legislation, a variety of economists say, is helping an economy in free fall a year ago to grow again and shed fewer jobs than it otherwise would. Mr. Obama's promise to "save or create" about 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010 is roughly on track, though far more jobs are being saved than created, especially among states and cities using their money to avoid cutting teachers, police officers and other workers. "It was worth doing -- it's made a difference," said Nigel Gault, chief economist at IHS Global Insight,

over the years, I've provided much needed and appreciated information about voting and the election process, as well as outlined almost every detail of how to run a congressional wide election...

It was your "BE THE CHANGE" that was the catalyst that got me realizing I could not just sit and bitch about the destruction of this country, that I had to start, both locally and state wide and nationwide getting involved.

Every Dem has to do this also, no matter how small, or where it is. Get involved ! Unite with other Dems, and work your tail off.

Drug companies are disgusting bastards. Our government pays for the research and the drug companies own the drugs and f**k Americans and the rest of the world spending billions on advertising and executive salaries. Why did we let the f**king greedy bastard republicans get away with this. It sounds like reegonomics to me.

Stevie-------the police did call me (no visit), and after I filled him in on the details of YOU being on this board for over 6 years, your actions over those 6 years, things you have said and done, he admitted he was dealing with a very sick man, and I should ignore you because you were so sick and there was no telling what you would do next.. We had a couple of chuckles, he wished me a good holiday, and I wished him one also.
all in all, a very nice chat. too bad !!!

We are f**king ourselves. I wonder how many other corporations profited from government grants. The space program is a good example. We paid to invent fuel cells, the first electronic calculators and the like. Then they let some greedy bastard corporation use the developments to make billions for themselves and their shareholders. Meanwhile taxes on stock profits is lower than the usual tax rate. This is downright sick.

I am off to work.

Sarah, Don't Go Rogue; Go Home

With the release of her new book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," former Alaskan Gov. and Republican Party vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is once again being given a spotlight she does not deserve. Under normal circumstances, Palin would have drifted into obscurity by now; a political has-been, who never was. Instead, a sub-par politician with no substantial constituency, no command of relevant issues and no solutions to substantive problems is being given air and face time as though she really matters. The simple reality that few are willing to articulate is, if she were not relatively attractive, of European ancestry and a woman, Sarah Palin would be day-old bread

I always wonder, if Palin looked like Virginia Fox if these Repugs would be so mesmerized. I doubt it !!
