The GOP senators who sided with defense contractors at the expense of women — such as John Thune (SD) — have been facing an intense backlash. David Vitter (LA) refused to give a rape victim a straight answer when she confronted him about his vote, claiming that he is “absolutely supportive of any [rape] case like that being prosecuted criminally to the full extent of the law.”

I'm surprised the Republicans ever come out of The Bunker these days. They might have to face the mess they made of everything.
But then they have Blackwater, the Birthers, the Young Republicans, and the teabaggers to make their fears well known. The GOP is nothing more than a very insecure group of crybabies.
Why they think middle class and Independent voters would want to turn to them for leadership with their failed record and their constant hang wringing in troubled times is a mystery. That's the only political strategy they have? It's like saying let Chicken Little run the country.
Didn't we see this with the Republicans before with 911? Bush ignored the warnings and then ran away that day only return to the scene of his disgrace when he had the all clear. Then he allows Bin Lauden to flee to Pakistan and occupies two uninvolved countries instead?
This is leadership? The GOP doesn't ever do anything right because they are afraid of the future much less making the needed sacrifices and taking the risks that insure future success.
A slow slide into oblivion is the GOP fix for what ails this country. They don't even want to try to fight back any longer. They are just handing our economy and military strength to whatever country wants to take it. The Communist Chinese, European Union, and even the emerging third-world countries like Brazil are more than happy to oblige.

WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration is taking aim at caffeinated alcoholic drinks, saying it will pull them off the market unless manufacturers can prove the beverages are safe to drink.
On Friday, the FDA sent letters to nearly 30 companies, giving them 30 days to provide evidence that their drinks don't pose health or safety risks. The FDA hasn't approved the use of caffeine in alcoholic beverages, and companies might have to show that experts generally think mixing caffeine and alcohol is safe for consumers.

"From the beginning, Nicolle [Wallace] pushed for Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News. The campaign's general strategy involved coming out with a network anchor, someone they felt had treated John well on the trail thus far. My suggestion was that we be consistent with that strategy and start talking to outlets like FOX and the Wall Street Journal. I really didn't have a say in which press I was going to talk to, but for some reason Nicolle seemed compelled to get me on the Katie bandwagon," writes Palin, according to excerpts obtained before Tuesday's release date for the highly anticipated book.

Drudge report says it obtained a portion of the book in which Palin claims McCain campaign adviser Nicolle Wallace pushed for the now famous Katie Couric interview because the CBS anchor needed a self-esteem "boost."
"'She just has such low self-esteem,' Nicolle said. She added that Katie was going through a tough time, 'She just feels she can't trust anybody.' Nicolle had left her gig at CBS just a few months earlier to hook up with the McCain campaign," continues Palin in the excerpt.

Palin and Wallace do agree that the Couric interview didn't go well.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - John McCain's former presidential campaign manager Steve Schmidt is the latest McCain adviser to cry foul over accusations Sarah Palin has penned in her yet to be released memoir "Going Rogue."
Excerpts obtained by The Huffington Post characterize Schmidt in an unfavorable light, particularly in reference to the prank phone call Palin received from someone pretending to be French President Nicolas Sarkozy. "Right away, the phones started ringing," Palin writes. "One of the first calls was Schmidt, and the force of his screaming blew my hair back. 'How can anyone be so stupid?! Why would the president of France call a vice presidential candidate a few days out?!'"
In a telephone conversation with CNN's John King, Schmidt said how he is described and portrayed in the book is "fanciful. [And] total fiction."
In the excerpts, Palin also claims Schmidt tried to put her on a strict eating regimen, and in a conversation with Randy Scheunemann, a McCain foreign policy adviser, he had blamed the campaigns problems on Palin's "postpartum depression."
"Schmidt started in again, telling Randy what an awful pick I was - the "postpartum" problems, the wardrobe "scandal," "legal exposure" for Todd on Troopergate, whatever he meant by that," Palin writes according to the published excerpts.

I was watching one of my favorite shows yesterday on the Science channel called How Do They Do That.
They show how they make ball point pens, and many other manufacturing processes.
It occurred to me yesterday that all these factories they show are in foreign countries.
What the hell do we do anymore but kill people, bicker among ourselves and amass large sums of money for ourselves.
It seems that's all we manufacture anymore is death. Most of our treasure goes to military equipment, sports, movies and oil.
When did we lose out manufacturing capabilities and our scientific prowess? We used to lead the world in technology. Reading history books, I observed that all great nations reach a peak of scientific prowess, then die off. Europe was the great industrial giant in the nineteenth century then we took it away from them and we became the great industrial giant in the twentieth century and we are dying off
Most great nations lose their scientific leadership over time. We took it away from Europe in the twentieth century, now we are losing it because we are more interested in sports and are too damn cheap to provide free college to anyone who wants to attend. Home schooled children learn about religion as if if is the only thing we need to know.
Are we dying off because of the greedy conservatives? Their bottom line is money and tax cuts for the rich.

In a pre-taped interview for Sunday’s :“State of the Union” program on CNN, Obama senior advisor David Axelrod fired back at criticism by Romney that the president was taking too long to decide on whether to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Boy, there sure doesn't seem to be any recession going on at Target. We went shopping yesterday and you would have thought it was Black Friday...couldn't find a parking spot and the place was decorated up like some sugar plum fairy's dream.
The holiday shopping season is in full swing and the checkout lines were backed up and buzzing. I guess parents are afraid that the toys are going to disappear since the media is hyping the fact that stores don't plan to restock once things are sold out.
One thing I found interesting is that there were plenty of stockers/sales people on hand and they were greeting people. One fellow spend a good deal of time explaining some electronic equipment that we were interested in buying. Usually, you're lucky if you can find a sales person much less they have the time to talk.
I guess personal service is a new strategy by retailers this season since they know that people are planning to spend less and are being careful what they buy?
Well, I guess the world is not going to come to an end just because progressives are suggesting that health care coverage might make people healthier and happier workers?

They are doing a series in the local paper about the public works projects that were part of FDR's New Deal to get people back to work during the 1930s. They built everything from libraries and hospitals, to auditoriums and court houses, to botanical conservatories. A lot of the things we now take for granted were rare until the Democrats made our society more civilized.

The Republican President Barack Obama once nominated as commerce secretary said Sunday that the U.S. is on the brink of a fiscal meltdown that will give it “third-class status as a nation.”
Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., the senior Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, told C-SPAN that the biggest problem faced by the country is “the impending fiscal meltdown of our nation.” a risk he said is only exceeded by the risk of a terrorist attack using weapons of mass destruction.
“We’re taking ourselves down the road to third-class status as a nation,” Gregg said in the interview, which focused on the pending healthcare debate in the Senate that is expected to start this week.
Gregg criticized a rush of government spending for adding to the debt. But he also said entitlement spending is the real long-term budgetary problem facing the country.
Last year’s deficit was a record $1.4 trillion, up more than $900 billion from the previous year. The budget was inflated because of much lower tax revenues, which were down because of the worst recession in generations, and government spending intended to stimulate the economy and rescue the financial industry.
Gregg said he would support a move to freeze discretionary spending.
“We almost don’t have to do anything to explain it,” said Gregg. “This is not difficult to understand. We don’t want to be a debtor nation. We don’t want to be a third-class nation.”

I just heard the anchor on CNN say that the health care vote needs 60 votes to pass in the Senate. Why do these cable guys continue to repeat inaccuracies?
With reconciliation you only need 51 (actually anywhere else in the universe you only need a simple majority) and that already kicked in sometime in October because the stimulus bill passed with a provision stating it was so.
The Republicans might still get their filibuster because we don't have the 60 votes for closure, but they don't have the votes to stop the final bill.
Half those old geezers will probably die during the filibuster process. I can see them now dropping like flies as they work themselves into a lather arguing that medical care is a luxury only for those who can afford its skyrocketing costs. It actually might give many voters their own feeling of closure seeing these greedy old men who sold out our country expire on camera.
I'm personally looking forward to see these angry old Republican goats glaring at the cameras as they filibuster against the younger Generation and Baby Boomers having the health care coverage that they currently enjoy. It should set the Republican Party back even further than Bush already did.

California is hoping to get a few billion in stimulus bucks to build theirs. Why not a high-speed train from coast to coast? Just think of the infrastructure we would need to build and the jobs it would create.
This would shape up to be like one of President Roosevelt's behemoth projects like the Grand Coulee dam, The Tennessee Valley dams, hoover dam, The giant aqueducts carrying irrigation water in California, and more.

I have heard of that route. President Eisenhower when he was a young officer in the 1920's took a military convoy across the United States by road on what was called a national highway. He discovered first-hand how difficult a journey it was and how important transportation is so important to a nation to transport goods. This is where he got the idea for the Interstate Highway System. What a great republican president. All the republicans since have been losers, especially reegan, and the two bush's.

I'll be happy when they re-open Rt. 40 here in St. Louis in a few weeks. They shut the thing down two years ago to widen and modernize the entire stretch through the middle of the city and county...new bridges, extra lanes and interchanges. It might be just what the entire stretch needs across the country. That would be on worthy public works program.

We have an Interstate 40 crossing New Mexico. I think it used to be Route 66. California also had a highway 40. It was changed to Interstate 80 back in the 1960's and starts in Sacramento and goes through Reno.

You need more Democratic reps to make sure the federal funding reaches the places in Ohio that need it. But then you've been working on that most of your adult life.
Even the Republicans in St. Louis had had enough of trying to navigate that stretch of Rt. 40 here. It now connects with Interstate 70 in St. Charles County...they finally got rid of the last stop light just this summer. I think a branch of Rt. 40 still goes to Jefferson City but it's more like a state road.
You can make progress in a purple state when Republicans get so fed up with their own incompetence that they finally give up and work with Democrats. It can happen, but it helps to have a lot more Democrats to begin with.

Rt. 66 is different here. It's about two blocks from my house as a suburban road. It becomes Interstate 44 about a mile from here. Eisenhower sure knew what we needed. Obama does, too.
Green energy development, universal health care, and a free higher education/technical training for our workforce...after we undo all the deregulation of the markets, privatization corruption and waste, outsourcing/downsizing/hostile takeovers, and an unfair multinational trade policy which the Republicans saddled this nation with...that's the ticket to the future for America.

We have plans to add light rail along all the highways to link up with electric and hydrogen buses. Our Metro system already has a large number of said vehicles operating efficiently and economically.
Younger people don't like suffering in slow, toxic traffic jams. They have other prioritizes for their lifestyles. It's just a matter of time. They will bring this country kicking and screaming into the 21st century and off the oil standard within my lifetime.
If scientists think they can re-create dinosaurs by turning off genes within modern bird DNA within the next five years, we can surely tank our reliance on the Arabs and Palin's Big Oil tomfoolery, too.

GM to Start Repaying $6.7 Billion US Government Loan

General Motors will announce on Monday it plans to start repaying a $6.7 billion loan to the U.S. Treasury by year-end due to modest operating improvements, a source knowledgeable about the situation said.
GM, due to unveil its first post-bankruptcy earnings report on Monday, will begin making $1 billion quarterly installments on the loan on Dec. 31.
At the same time, the automaker also will start repaying a $1.4 billion loan to Canada at a rate of $200 million per quarter.
GM was not required to make any payments on the U.S. loan before it matured in July 2015, but better-than-expected vehicle sales will let it start repayments much sooner than expected.
"The reason GM is in a position to do that is that they have seen performance that has been modestly ahead of what the expectation was when GM went into bankruptcy and emerged from bankruptcy," said the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the repayment plan.
GM vehicle sales fell off less than expected during its government-supported bankruptcy in June and July, which lasted only about 39 days. Sales since then, aided partly by government "cash for clunkers" incentives, have performed ahead of plan.
Early Exit
As a result, GM has not been forced to burn through some $16 billion in taxpayer cash provided to the company when it emerged from bankruptcy. The source said GM has used only about $3 billion of these funds, which are contained in a restricted escrow account that cannot be accessed without Treasury approval.
GM will make its loan payments from the escrow account, the source said, adding that the arrangement resulted from discussions between the Obama administration's auto task force and the GM board.
"It is consistent with the U.S. government's focus on exiting the position as early as practicable," the source said.
The government stepped in to bail out both GM and Chrysler Group to save a key portion of the U.S. manufacturing sector from collapse amid the recession.
The $6.7 billion in senior debt is only a small portion of the more than $50 billion in taxpayer funds provided to GM. Much of this was converted to a nearly 61 percent equity stake, making the Treasury GM's largest shareholder. Treasury officials have said they hope to sell shares in a GM initial public offering in the next year.
The source said this would not happen in the first half of the year, so the repayment plan would let GM reduce the loan by at least $3 billion "before any plausible IPO."
The repayment schedule also could be altered to accommodate IPO plans or accelerated payments, should conditions warrant.
But the source cautioned that GM's condition was only modestly better than expected and it was not yet ready to repay the full loan amount.
"While there are modest improvements which were important and put them in the position to do this, they are at the very beginning of a difficult restructuring and are not in any way out of the woods," the source said.

I try and imagine how much further down the USA would be---HAD by some horrific nightmare McCain and Palin had won! Economically, they would have continued Bush's policies that drove us here. What would the stock market be by now? How many more jobs would have been lost, because of no stimulus, no help to keep auto companies, etc going. How many more people would lose their health care. How much more accelerated would the Occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan be? How many additional US troop deaths would there have been? Would McCain have started back in with that building 14 US bases around the interior of Iraq? Would he have bombed Iran by now, starting WW III? Would the entire country and coasts of the USA have drilling rigs all set up all over ?
Would Palin have been out to other countries demanding they all get born again? Perhaps all of the other countries would no longer be even dealing with us, because of her ignorance.
