Gates Testifies On Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

Posted by Jonah on February 2, 2010 at 03:19 PM

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee today, where he unveiled a plan to abandon the military’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. Implemented in 1993, the policy prohibits LGBT Americans from openly serving in the U.S. military. This hearing comes less than a week after President Obama, in his State of the Union address, vowed to work with Congress and the military this year to end the policy.

My compliments to the SECDEF for commissioning this study. DADT, like the old seperate but equal policy, is a policy whose era has come and gone.

Yes he testified for it yes he syas he supports it ,I still dont believe him , he is a neo-con.I think he will try to torpedo it covertly. All the hold overs from the Bush administration are a drag to Obamas agenda ,all of them. I always heard that a new broom sweeps clean,so why didnt we get a new broom? Todays special from gates is "dont move to fast" sounds like another stall. I saw no hesitation to implament any of the previous administrations programs, none. This wait and see attitude is a smoke screan for stalling .Stop allowing it.

Listen, the General has to consider the crazy consequences of such a fast move. It could lead to a lot of violence and retaliations against gays that are discovered and that then aren't sent out of the military. These guys could suffer horribly. We can't forget that the insanity that is against gays isn't purely political, it is cultural with deep roots. This General is thinking about the many young men and women who might end up in trouble from suffering from or even acting on anti-gay feelings that preached from pulpits all over this country.

I believe its the right thing to do, but give him time. It took a while before we could integrate the races so it will take some time to integrate gays and lesbians.

So let's give the good General a little breathing room here.
