  • Black History Month: Coming together to move America forward

Last week, President Obama laid out an ambitious agenda for the year ahead: expanding access to preschool education for every American child, making the minimum wage a living wage, and reducing gun violence in our communities. But as our executive director, Patrick Gaspard, notes in his video message marking Black History Month, the President can’t do this on his own.

And as we celebrate the many contributions of African Americans throughout our history and the progress we've made in the fight for equal opportunity, this should also be a moment to focus on the change we still need. This month, let's commit ourselves to working toward President Obama's vision of stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger America.

Watch Gaspard's message, then say you stand with President Obama in the fight to make sure our best days are still ahead of us.

    Stand with the President

  • Today's front pages

From day one, President Obama's first order of business has been to reignite a rising, thriving middle class—a message he carried to Congress and to the American people at last night's State of the Union address.

Whether he was making the case for a balanced approach to reducing our deficit and rebuilding our economy, comprehensive immigration reform, or smart investments in manufacturing, infrastructure, and education, the President made it clear that our North Star must be "a growing economy that creates good, middle-class jobs."

That's exactly the message that Americans across the country woke up to today:

  • A thriving middle class

    Support the President's agenda

  • "We will get it done"

Tonight, President Obama laid out his vision for our country in his State of the Union address: continuing to rebuild our economy, strengthening our education system, and passing much-needed comprehensive immigration reform.

Our chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, emailed her initial reaction after she left the speech. Take a look at her note, then add your name to say you support the agenda President Obama outlined tonight.

    Friend --

I just walked out of the chamber, and -- wow -- I still have goosebumps. I couldn't be more proud of our President.

Let President Obama -- and all my colleagues in Congress -- know you support his plans for the coming year:

  • President Obama on what it means to be a Democrat today

When President Obama addressed the House Democratic Issues Conference, he spoke about what it means to be a Democrat in this day and age.

"When I think about what it means to be a Democrat in this day and age, I start with the basic proposition that we are all created equal, that we’re all endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights. And my governing philosophy and my interest in public service grows out of how we make that union more perfect for more people, day in, day out."
