How the American Jobs Act Will Help Veterans

Posted by

President Obama made it a priority to include measures in the American Jobs Act to help veterans returning to the civilian work force.

The Returning Heroes Tax Credit will offer up to $5,600 to businesses that hire veterans who have been unemployed for at least six months. Additionally, the Wounded Warriors Tax Credit will encourage companies to hire veterans with service-connected disabilities who have been unemployed six months or longer.

The President’s plan also includes a Department of Defense–led initiative that will improve the career-readiness of all service members and enhance job search services through the Department of Labor for veterans transitioning back into civilian society.

The extended payroll tax cut will put more money in the pocket of every working American, including veterans—providing resources that can go toward supporting our military families.

In the words of President Obama, “We ask these men and women to leave their careers, leave their families, risk their lives to fight for our country. The last thing they should have to do is fight for a job when they come home.” The American Jobs Act recognizes both how important it is that we we support veterans after they leave the service and the important role these individuals can play in getting our economy back on track.
