Retired General Wesley Clark: "Republicans have been all over the map"

Today at the National Press Club, Retired General Wesley Clark, former Navy Secretary Richard Danzig, and Retired Major General Paul Eaton held a press conference on the 2012 election and national security.

Citing President Obama's foreign policy successes—dismantling the capabilities of al-Qaeda, bringing Osama bin Laden to justice, keeping his word on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—General Clark noted that President Obama has exhibited real leadership.

"Keeping America safe and secure is the solemn duty of any president—and especially in the context of multiple wars, it is an intense,24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year challenge. It is a duty President Obama has executed, in many ways, brilliantly. …

"America does best when we have strong, bipartisan foreign policy, consistent from year to year, based on America's deepest values and enduring interests. And this is precisely what President Obama has achieved."

Contrast that with the Republican presidential candidates, who have proved time and again that they are not ready to lead. General Clark said:

"While President Obama has kept his promises across the globe, the leading Republicans have been all over the map—offering sound-bite critiques and shifting positions with every change in the headlines as they seek partisan advantage. …

"In some of the most momentous decisions in our nation's history, American commanders-in-chief have had one chance to get it right. There are seldom do-overs when our nation's security is at stake."
