DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement on the passing of Senator George McGovern:

“Today we have lost a leader, patriot, and advocate for those in need, Senator George McGovern. Senator McGovern always had the courage to stand up for his convictions, and his lifelong commitment to serving our country—first in World War II and later in elected office—was an inspiration to so many of us. A strong progressive voice, he exemplified the values we as Democrats hold dear. He believed that we are all in this together, and that as a nation and a world we should come together to alleviate suffering wherever it may be. For Senator McGovern, that started with world hunger. Senator McGovern never stopped striving to make our world better and more peaceful, and approached whatever he was doing with a compassionate heart. Before it was a popular idea, he recognized the importance of ensuring women's voices were added to the discussion of our national agenda. He appointed Jean Westwood as the first woman to chair the Democratic National Committee and advocated for women to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and as Vice President. A fighter until the end, his passion will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the McGovern family at this difficult time.”
