Last night, we saw voters come out to the polls to defeat Republican initiatives and Republican candidates across the country in a full-scale repudiation of extreme and divisive Republican policies.

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement on the passing of civil rights leader and a founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.

Today is Women’s Equality Day, the anniversary of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which gave women the right to vote. In recognition of that occasion, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement.

"Forty years ago, the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution took effect, lowering the universal voting age in America from 21 years to 18 years. Millions of young Americans were extended the right to vote, empowering more young people than ever before to help shape our country."

While Republican governors and legislatures across the country attempt to hinder young people from voting, the Democratic Party will continue fighting to expand the electorate and make sure young voters are able to exercise their Constitutional right to vote.

"The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy. Any attempt to infringe upon that right or impede Americans’ ability to choose their own leaders is an unconscionable attack on the democratic values that set our nation apart. I applaud Governor Lynch and all the Democratic governors across this country who have taken a stand to defend Americans’ right to vote by vetoing Republican photo-ID legislation and similar bills."

"For years, Republicans have knowingly trumpeted false claims about rampant voter fraud. They know these claims to be false. Indeed, every effort to demonstrate widespread fraud at the ballot box has failed to turn up evidence that such fraud exists."

"Today we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who championed civil rights and was a 'drum major' for justice; who stated that 'nonviolence is the only path to freedom' and lived that philosophy; who showed us that the way to a better future is to bring people, without regard to their skin color, into the mainstream of American life as quickly as possible; and who forged a path toward a country where people are judged on the content of their character."
