Tonight, the House of Representatives voted to approve the DREAM Act. Following the House vote of approval, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine released the following statement:
The DREAM Act is a commonsense bill that has the backing of leaders from both sides of the aisle as well as the support of the President, the Defense Department, and the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Education. It is a bill that would strengthen the American military and economy by offering legal status to young undocumented immigrants who are willing to serve in the U.S. military or pursue higher education in order to get right with the law. It would apply only to those young people brought here undocumented by their parents – young people who are in a difficult position not of their own making and who deserve the chance to succeed in America if they are willing to take the necessary steps.
Tonight, the House of Representatives voted to give those young people the opportunity to achieve the American Dream. It is my sincere hope that the Senate will soon follow their lead. This bill has received the support of Senate Republicans in the past, and there is no reason it should not receive bipartisan support now.
