DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz: President Obama Will Not Let Republicans Use Election-Year Politics to Turn America’s Support for Israel Into a Partisan Political Game

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement today in response to efforts by the Republican Jewish Coalition to distort President Obama’s record of ironclad support for our friend and ally Israel, as well as the President’s steadfast commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon:

“The divisive and misleading political rhetoric being put forth by groups like the Republican Jewish Coalition is exactly the kind of noise that President Obama was referring to during his recent interview on 60 Minutes. The President was making the following point: that he will not allow election-season political noise to distract him from the serious decisions he must make as Commander-in-Chief. That includes protecting the security of our friend and ally Israel and making sure that Iran is never able to obtain a nuclear weapon. The President was crystal-clear on that point during his 60 Minutes interview, saying: ‘I understand and share Prime Minister Netanyahu’s insistence that Iran should not obtain a nuclear weapon, because it would threaten us, it would threaten Israel, and it would threaten the world and kick off a nuclear arms race.’

“President Obama has been proud to stand up for Israel every step of the way – militarily, financially and diplomatically – and he has always been fully committed to preventing Iran from getting its hands on a nuclear weapon. Furthermore, he knows that maintaining a strong and enduring U.S.-Israel relationship is far too serious of an issue to be subjected to baseless political attacks. To suggest otherwise – as groups like the Republican Jewish Coalition have done – is to directly prove the President’s point: that Republicans are using election-year politics to try to turn America’s support for Israel into a partisan political game. And that is simply unacceptable.”
