DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Cinco de Mayo

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement in honor of Cinco de Mayo:

“Nearly a century and a half ago, Mexican fighters and workers came together to achieve an improbable victory: They defeated a better-armed, more numerous French army invading Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862.

“Cinco de Mayo is an opportunity for our nation to come together and celebrate the countless contributions of Mexican Americans and all Hispanic Americans to our great country.  Like Mexicans that fateful morning in 1862, today Hispanic Americans continue the fight to give their families a better life.  And they answer the call of American democracy by making their voices heard.

“President Obama knows that Hispanics play a crucial role in our nation’s ability to win the future.  On Cinco de Mayo, as we keep working to ensure that our country provides Hispanic families the opportunity to win the future, whether by fixing the immigration system or continuing to improve our economy, I am honored to fully support an administration that has worked so hard for the improvement of Hispanic American lives and working families all across the country.”
