DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on New Jersey Gubernatorial Debate

Following this evening’s New Jersey gubernatorial debate between state Sen. Barbara Buono and Gov. Chris Christie, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement:

“Throughout this campaign, Chris Christie has tried to whitewash his record of mismanaging New Jersey’s economy and pushing an agenda that is out of step with mainstream New Jersey voters. But tonight we heard the truth. In Chris Christie’s New Jersey, property taxes have soared, and the state has seen the second highest rate of foreclosures in the nation. With one of the worst job records in the country, Christie’s promised ‘economic comeback’ never happened. Not only has Christie’s tenure been terrible for New Jersey’s economy, but he is also wrong on the issues. He chose to put his national ambitions over New Jersey when he vetoed legislation to keep dangerous guns off the streets. He cut equal pay for women, calling it ‘senseless bureaucracy.’ He vetoed an increase in the minimum wage. And he continues to stand in the way of marriage equality for LGBT couples in New Jersey. That is Chris Christie’s real record.

“Tonight, Barbara Buono called attention to the contradictions between Christie’s campaign message and the reality of his failed record as governor. She also provided a stark contrast for New Jersey voters. In Barbara Buono, New Jersey will have a governor who always reflects their mainstream values, not just when the cameras are rolling. Barbara will work to grow New Jersey’s economy and renew the state’s commitment to education that has been gutted under Chris Christie. On November 5, the people of New Jersey should choose Barbara Buono to lead the comeback that Chris Christie never did.”
