DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement on the passing of civil rights leader and a founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.
"It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth. Rev. Shuttlesworth was a man who dedicated his life to fighting for the goals of equality and opportunity. He understood an essential truth about our country—that we are strongest when everyone has the chance to thrive, not just a select few. And he was focused on making sure that voting rights are protected and that voters have the opportunity and ability to cast a ballot. Reverend Shuttlesworth led a remarkable life and leaves behind a remarkable legacy—but most importantly, he leaves behind a nation where we are breaking down barriers and increasing opportunity, which we must remain vigilant in protecting. My thoughts are with Rev. Shuttlesworth's family at this difficult time."
