DNC Vice Chair R. T. Rybak Blasts Mitt Romney’s Claim That We Don’t Need ‘More Firemen, More Policeman, More Teachers’

DNC Vice Chair and Minneapolis Mayor RT Rybak blasted Mitt Romney’s comment that “[President Obama] says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

DNC Vice Chair and Mayor of Minneapolis RT Rybak:

“Could Mitt Romney be any more disconnected from the concerns of middle class Americans? To suggest that police, firefighters and teachers aren’t helping the American people and aren’t vital to our communities shows that he has no clue what’s going on in the real world. Mitt Romney’s assertion that the American people don’t benefit from firemen, policemen and teachers is so detached from reality I did a double take – I had to check twice to be sure he had actually said it.

“As Mayor of Minneapolis, I can tell you that residents in our city understand and appreciate the important services that our firefighters, police officers and teachers provide. Our businesses, homes and schools are all better off thanks to the tireless work of our firefighters, police officers and teachers. Suggesting that the American people don’t want safer homes, safer streets and smaller class sizes really makes you wonder which Americans Mitt Romney is talking to. It certainly isn’t any middle class Americans or those without Swiss bank accounts.

“The real reason Mitt Romney doesn’t want to hire more firefighters, police officers and teachers is simple: he wants to implement “Romney Economics.” Mitt Romney's economic scheme is familiar and troubling: more budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy; fewer rules for Wall Street—the same formula that benefitted a few, but crashed our economy and punished the middle class. To create true middle class security, we can’t just cut our way to prosperity. We must out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the world and we can’t do any of that if we follow the “Romney Economics” prescription: tax cuts for the wealthy instead of investments in our communities.”
