DNC Youth Council Urges Congress to Pass DREAM Act

DNC Youth Council Co-Chair Jason Rae (WI) issued the following statement calling on Congress to pass the DREAM Act:

“Over the course of the next few weeks, the United States Congress will take up a number of key legislative items important to young people, including the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act provides a path to citizenship for undocumented young people by creating the opportunity for them to obtain legal status by pursuing a higher education or by serving in the American military. Republicans first authored the DREAM Act and the bill has had the bi-partisan support of Republicans and Democrats – including from President Obama who was a co-sponsor while in the Senate. It is common sense legislation to move our country forward and will strengthen our economy and security.

“Young people all over the country support passage of the DREAM Act. We know that our country is built on diversity and that the success of our nation depends on our ability to ensure that we continue to grow and prosper together. Those young people who would benefit from the passage of the DREAM Act are here through no fault of their own. If this bill becomes law, they would have the opportunity to become a part of the country that they love by serving our country in the military or by pursuing a higher education.

“On behalf of the DNC Youth Council and young people all over the country, I call on Republicans to not let politics get in the way of good policy and support the DREAM Act.  It is imperative the Congress act now so that we can continue to move our country forward.”
