National Republicans Line up Behind Lonegan

As the RNC is meeting in Boston, the Republican Party apparatus is lining up behind Tea Party darling Steve Lonegan, the GOP’s newly minted candidate for the Senate in New Jersey. The RNC told Roll Call that the committee “will help Lonegan through its Victory program in New Jersey. The Victory program provides resources to Republicans from the top of the ticket down, such as funding for offices, staff and volunteers to garner support for GOP candidates.” Following Lonegan’s primary win the NRSC put out a release praising Lonegan as “the type of commonsense conservative we need if we are going to get [Washington] working again.”

Since their 2012 losses, Republicans have endlessly promised to change their ways and recruit candidates who can appeal to the groups they traditionally lost including women, young people and people of color.

In throwing their support behind Lonegan, it’s clear that the GOP’s rebranding and recruitment effort has been nothing short of an abject failure. Lonegan is cut from the same extreme Tea Party cloth of Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock whose candidacies alienated the very voters the GOP claims they can win this year. Today’s GOP is the Same Old Party that voters rejected last year.

Here’s a brief overview on the extreme positions held by the GOP’s newest statewide candidate:

LONEGAN SUGGESTED A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WOULD BE A GOOD THING

Lonegan: “I Have No Problem With A Government Shutdown… It’s A Good Way To See What Services Are Essential And What Are Not.” “‘I have no problem with a government shutdown,’ Steve Lonegan said, offering one example of the take-no-prisoners approach he promises to bring to the federal government. ‘It’s a good way to see what services are essential and what are not.’” [North Jersey, 7/7/13]

LONEGAN VOWED TO REPEAL AND DEFUND OBAMACARE

Lonegan: “I Commit To Defund And… Repeal And Get Rid Of Obamacare.”  The Record reported on Steve Lonegan run for Senate: “‘I am running as a conservative and I intend to stand up, and I commit to defund and ... repeal and get rid of Obamacare before it’s too late, and I’m going to put backbone into the Republican Party in Washington, D.C., and make sure they do so,’ he said.” [The Record, 6/6/13]

LONEGAN WOULD BAN ALL ABORTION AND DEFUND PLANNED PARENTHOOD

Lonegan Opposed All Abortions Even In Cases of Rape or Incest. “Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan is clearly the most ardent abortion foe among the seven, saying he opposes all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest.” [Jersey Journal, 4/25/05]

Lonegan: “I Am Pro-Life And I’m Not Going To Apologize For That… I Would Defund Planned Parenthood.” Steve Lonegan: “I am pro-life and I’m not going to apologize for that. … I would defund Planned Parenthood.’” [Editorial Board Interview, The Record, 8/5/13]

LONEGAN SAID “WE NEED TO FIND ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND DEPORT THEM”

Lonegan: “We Need to Find Illegal Immigrants and Deport Them.” “Lonegan said New Jersey would be ‘putting out a welcome mat for illegal immigrants from other states’ if it issued a document that would allow the undocumented to drive. ‘We'll be a magnet for illegal immigrants,’ he said. ‘We need to fight illegal immigration, not help it. We need to find illegal immigrants and deport them.’” [The Record, 4/12/05]

LONEGAN OPPOSES GAY MARRIAGE AND WARNS OF AN “ASSAULT ON THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE”

Lonegan Opposes Gay Marriage. The Associated Press reported in a profile on Senate candidate Steve Lonegan: “Also opposes gay marriage and abortion rights.” [Associated Press, 7/12/13]

Lonegan: “I Believe Marriage Is Between A Man And A Woman.” [Editorial Board Interview, The Record, 8/5/13]

Lonegan Said The Supreme Court Decision Striking Down The Defense Of Marriage Act Was “The Unfortunate Result Of An Activist, Liberal Court That Has Little Respect For The Constitution And Our Nation’s Founding Principles.”  “Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Mayor Steve Lonegan slammed the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor, striking down the Defense of Marriage Act. ‘Today’s decision is the unfortunate result of an activist, liberal court that has little respect for the Constitution and our nation’s founding principles,’ the movement conservative Republican said in a statement.” [PolitickerNJ, 6/26/13]

Lonegan Warned Of An “All-Out Assault Of The Sanctity Of Marriage And The Family In This Country.” “Speaking at the National Parents Day Banquet in Cedar Grove, U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan said parents could not compete with government bureaucrats, citing what he called ‘an all-out assault on the sanctity of marriage and the family in this country.’” [Verona-Cedar Grove Times, 7/25/13]

LONEGAN WANTS TO ELIMINATE THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Lonegan Vowed To “Defund And Eliminate The Department Of Education” Advocating For Parents To Do The Teaching. “‘I will fight to repeal Common Core curriculum standards and defund and eliminate the federal Department of Education,’ Lonegan said. ‘I think the best way to educate our children is by having a parent stay up and help them with their homework.’” [Philly.com, 7/25/13]
