Armen Boghos's Thoughts
About the Author
My insights on the world and what we can do to make it just one small bit better. Don't try and change everything, just change one thing.

Pakistan is still a country in the infancy of its accession into democracy and the wonders of a democratic state and economy but today they made a huge first step in that process, the removal of Musharraf. Too often countries elect leaders that hold onto power against the will of the people and those leaders destroy government and the citizens' faith in it. This was about to happen in Pakistan, but due to the unity of the people behind a common goal they were able to rid themselves of the corrupt leader and start anew. This is an amazing feat and I congratulate all those in Pakistan for having faith in your country, and your government to build a better society. Even though there is still much to do in Pakistan I believe that they have take the righteous first step on the path to democratic salvation.

I am sure that many Americans are celebrating (along with me) that Phelps has broken the gold medal record at the Olympics and won 8 golds in one games. This is truly an amazing event and something that has never happened before and may never happen again in our lifetimes. I was reading an article about it on Sports Illustrated and Phelps said this "Nothing is impossible." Of course that is a powerful statement, but to me this seems like the time where it really applies, not just to US swimming but to politics as well.   Read More »

Looking at this chart is a scary thing. For one, it is just mind boggling how much debt this government as accrued in just 8 years and then for another it is amazing that more than half of our debt is owned by foreign countries. I know that it has always been a large chunk, but not it is bigger than ever. And while this is good to keep other nations invested in the US, this is not good for keep our economy or our way of life stable. All it takes is one of these countries to try and cash in on all the money we owe them (and don’t have) and you will see a crash 10x of the housing market crash. Of course it isn’t in their best interest to have the US default on this debt so we will see this cycle continue, the US borrows and borrows to finance a broken economy and the world gives until it all comes tumbling down. To protect ourselves and the rest of the world the US needs to pay of this debt, this is a larger crisis than anything else out there because with a functioning economy all other policy/politics is useless.

I think the DNC is at the end of this month right? Anyone going? I was thinking about going until I did a little research on plane tickets and hotel prices, ummm think again. Hotels that are close are like 300 a night and then if you want something further away you will need to rent a car. I guess it would be cool if they just cover it on TV cause I am pretty sure I can't afford to go to it. Well unless someone wants to sponsor me :)
So it seems with the shooting in Tennessee that we finally have a fallout effect from the hate spewed out by the right-wing. Here is a quote from the Rawstory.com of what the sheriff said after searching Jim Adkissons, the shooter of Church gathering, home.

"The attack Sunday morning lasted only minutes. But the anger behind it may have been building for months, if not years. It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement,' Police Chief Sterling Owen said."   Read More »
Obliviously this is further proof that Obama is winning the hearts and mind of the people. I call it the merch indicator. Check out this Obama shoe below. Someone actually created and probably wears an Obama shoe! No one is creating McCain shoes because no one cares about McCain like we care about Obama. Obama is becoming so much a part of our daily lives that it makes it a much better chance that he wins the election. A shoe!? HA! I love it.

It was good to see that congress was finally able to push legislation through that actually will help American’s that are effected by the housing crisis. I like the fact that when it really mattered they were able to come together to help the people. I know the legislation is slow and that it isn’t perfect but that is never the case. There has never been a perfect law passed. But getting this bill passed does seem like the key log in a long stalemate between aisles in congress and it feels good to me to know that there is just a little bit of government that is functioning on some level. My hope for the future is that with the change that Obama brings in the White House, legislation that changes the world for the better will come much faster and bring about a higher standard of living for all the citizens of our great country. Getting this bill through is a paltry first step, but it is progress and we need to be thankful for that.
Check out this youtube video about was Dennis is going to do in Congress on Friday. Basically he is going to try to get Bush impeached and while I think this is a sisyphean task I applaud him for doing something to show America's discontent with how the government is being run. Of course I wish that they were doing more in congress instead of just posturing like this, but I am still happy to see someone bring it up and who knows, maybe it will pass and we can actually be happy that at least one good piece of legislation got passed. See below for the video.

I know that he doesn't have good politics (he was a donor to the Swift Boat Veterans) but I can't help but love the simple logic and go-get-them attitude of the 300 Million Wind Farm T. Boone Pickens Plan. It is a plan that realizes the power of wind, not as the only source of power for the US but as a good subsidy for it. It has beautiful logic to it, but more importantly it clearly points out that there is real money in clean technology. Once other investors see this, I promise you it will be a land rush and this country will turn on it's head faster than you can think. It won't be as soon as most of us want, but I assure you it will happen with the zeal that is capitalistic America. Hopefully our government can take Pickens' example and come together on this to make sure that we pass legislation that both improves clean techonology but also makes sure that Big business is well regulated in doing it.
So this is a local issue for me, but my county is setting itself up to be knocked down again on another school board bond issue. This one is to help repair the elementary and High schools in the area. In the last three elections voters have voted against a bond measures or tax increases to help schools and I am sick of it.

We need a new system that allows the federal government to help schools more so we don't have to rely on the greedy citizens that don't want to help other peoples' kids. Anyway, if I was a teacher I would start putting these magnets up in my classrooms to help drive home the fact that Obama is the only one that seems to have real education funding on his mind. So get the magnet and help fight the apathy towards the education system.

Check out this article on McCain and is peculiar birth status. The claim in the article is that since McCain wasn't born the US (a requirement for the office of President) he can't be President since Panama born children weren't given US citizenship until after his first birthday. Well that is pretty cool and I hope that someone brings that up in court as the race goes on. But I want the fight in court to wait a little, maybe after the RNC. That way they will have no other established candidate and it will be a clean sweep for Obama as the republicans scramble to get a new person in McCains old shoes. Of course if they win the court case that opens the door for people like the Governator of California becoming President, and that is just sickening...
So I was reading this little article on CNN about the US as Whiners and I have to ask myself are we a nation of whiners or is there just too much to complain about? I feel like with things like the new FISA, the Iraq war and the fact that we are being robbed blind by CEOs/CFOs and the richie richies of the world that we are warranted to complain. I don't really care if I seem like a whiner to the republicans because, quite frankly, a little whining might be what congress needs to hear this nation.   Read More »

It seems that today is a good day for the Fed, as they have decided to pass sweeping reform to get rid of predatory lending practices by implementing a whole slew of new lending laws that protect consumers. The AP has the full story. To me though this is great, but really it is too late. I think that the Hill should be holding the Fed accountable for allowing these practices to go on in the first place. Bernanke and the other insanely smart economists should have seen this coming. I mean the rest of the economy   Read More »
In my never ending quest to see all things Obama, I have found someone that has created this really beautiful Obama Calendar. I am not sure if they took the picture or not, but they all seem to be candids of our future president and really show the true humaniness that we sometimes forget about our candidates and politicians. See below for the calendar.

So Obama stated today that he reserves the right to change is mind on Iraq policy once he has visited with commanders in the country next week. I am not sure how I feel about this, up until now I have agreed with all of Obama’s policy, but I don’t really like the change in stance on Iraq because it seems like it is pandering too much to the middle and is ruining the ideals of which his campaign originally stood for. I understand the need for it since we must stabilize Iraq since we caused the mess, but still it is hurtful to see some of the glimmer come out of the Obama campaign. Well maybe I am wrong, this might be the most progressive move since it really takes all angles into account, not just my views. But I do hope that this is not a bastion for other future policy changes.

So you might think this is a post about politics and I am using Apple Pie and Hot Dogs to compare some political issue. Nope that's not it at all. I just was thinking, Apple Pie and Hot Dogs are the two most American foods that we have and they are on opposite ends of the spectrum from each other. So the question is, if you had to only eat one for the rest of your life which would you choose? Yeah chew on that one for a minute...   Read More »
I like the hard line that Obama is taking on this issue. Don't bring in the question of patriotism into this election because anyone that is willing to sacrifice their entire life to politics (you can see how much it drains the presidents, just look at photos when they start and when they finish) to make this union a more perfect one is going to be pretty patriotic. Anyway, I like that he is not bringing this election year down, keeping it focused on the people and the issues. Good job Obama!
So I wonder how many people saw the video of Obama using the seal that looks a little like the presidential seal? Here it is below
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/06/24/moos.obama.seal.cnn?iref=videosearch

I thought it was a little funny that everyone was getting all up in arms about it. Was it presumptuous? Yes, but hardly something that should have been given as much attention as it was. Anyways, I found the products that they were showing in the video. See below.

There is a new commuter culture emerging as it becomes more expensive to drive to work these days. What's the trend - living close to the places you need. People are starting to move closer to work, or where they need to be to cut down on driving to save money. But the added benefit is that they are saving themselves and the environment! By driving less they pollute less. AND (I can only hope) this might be the start of a national walking culture. (fingers crossed)

One of my dreams for this country is that most people will be able to work close enough to home that they can bike or walk and enjoy life a little more each day while getting exercise and saving the planet. Cities will no longer become centers of urban blight but vibrant communities where people live, play and interact. I think it will bring us closer together as a community and as a country. It is better than reaching across the fence, because there wont be a fence!
