H&O should do a deal. A deal deal! It's crazy to drag this out to the very end. If they don't deal, they both could well be out in the fall. Instead of trying to figure out ways to re-count states, they should hammer out some kind of arrangement. Their voter demographics are complementary. They aren't that different on the issues.
Howard Dean should take the lead in this. I would love to be in the room for all the atomospherics...but the main point remains. They need to join forces and beat the GOP in November.

Our Democrats need a dose of....
Don't understand how you vote for an unjust war, then vote for a deadline on the war as a means of demonstrating disappoval for same. And to make things worse, you load the bill with billions in pork.
This is the problem with Dems. Their moral compass sometimes points in all directions at the same time. What's not being said is that Dems mostly agree with Republicans on the moral case for this war. I am not an expert by any means, but the asymmetrical nature of today's conflict is clear. The Dems would face the same fundamental problem if they were in power: how to fight people who are "not like us".
"Don't worry", we are told, "we knew when we voted for the deadline that the President would veto the bill...so the pork loading dosen't really matter."
The lack of a clear moral stance from the Dems on this war is troubling. And it is time to imagine the very near future. How will they prosecute this war? It will likely be around when they take power?
The President is screwing things up royally. What is our plan?

Somebody out there help me. The recent dance over Imus' comments seems like deju vu...all over again! The usual suspects trot out the predictable set of warmed over ideas. African Americans are expected to apologize for the nominal benefits a few receive from hip hop smut, while whites can feel superior because, after all, Imus'got his verbal ammunition from African Americans in the first place.
Last time I checked, few African Americans controlled music distribution, in the US or anywhere else. Granted, we write and perform the songs, but -- as is the case in history -- we don't sign ourselves to contracts, book tours, and roll ourselves up in the billions the music generats.
Yet African Americans are expected to apologize for creating hip hop culture. Apologize to who? For what? Our system has reached its highest level. Those who control the media and public opinion have gotten the art of target shifting down to a science. Want to deflect public attention from the basic problem of an amoral economic system? Turn the discussion away from fundamental ideas. Focus instead on devolved themes.
...and lacking a useful framework from which to accurately evaluate oursevles in the context of this society, we freeze.

The SC seems likely to continue to roll back local schools efforts to consider race along with class in school assignment. The Seattle and Louisville districts both are widely respected for this efforts in seeking racial inclusion.
One has to ask what U.S. schools will resemble if the court's conservative bent prevails. We have some indication: The California university system has been dramatic decreases in its minority enrollment since voters ended affirmative action in university admissions.
Is this the America that we want?
