One might think, or hope, that with all of those people and all of that money someone might have predicted that a mandated shift toward ethanol would bankrupt grain-dependant businesses (the catfish industry of Louisiana, for example, will float belly-up within a year if prices remain at their current level). Someone might have foreseen that the price of bread would double and milk would rise by 50% when grain is demanded to propel an SUV from one gas station to the next.
The willful disregard of our leaders is evident because nobody apparently bothered to ask the Agriculture Department or the Commerce Department about the impact of such a move. You can't get more basic than milk and bread.
How did we get so screwed up that the "center" has become a compromise between right and wrong? Pragmatism has become our national religion and nothing is off the table. It is becoming more apparent each day that whoever wins the next election we will get the government we deserve rather than the government we need.
Those cultists among Obama supporters are twisting themselves inside out trying to rationalize his recent wrong shifts, evidently to appease the political right. The newly passed FISA bill is wrong. It was wrong before it cleared the Senate and it is still wrong. FISA was originally written to curb republican abuses and anyone believing the republicans are less prone to abusive acts today has lost touch with reality.
Barack Obama has a single strength - his ability to inspire. It is a precious gift, but if he cannot win over wrong thinkers with right rhetoric and reason he is a totally empty suit. If he can only convert those already prone to believe, then he can advance us not at all.
Obama has aired his reasons but I'll admit I have not bothered to read them. Whatever words he used what he really said was, "The republicans will say I am weak on defence and I am not confident I can convince the voters otherwise." and "I am confident, however, I can convince more of my supporters I am not wrong than I can convince my detractors I am right." That does not bode well for his leadership capability. To the cultists I would say, it diminishes neither you nor the candidate to be skeptical.
Knowing just some of the obstacles which lie ahead it is unarguable that direct and decisive piloting will be needed to guide the ship of state. We will never get good government until we demand good government. We will never get representatives with integrity until we exercise our own integrity. I'm not suggesting we give up on Obama. What I am suggesting is we not give up on ourselves. I hope we still know the difference between right and wrong. And I hope we will refuse to accept wrong as a half-step toward right.

This might be what a Dem Primary ballot would look like.

Rank your favorites and let's see, in hindsight, what the results might have been.
Here's a link to Wikipedia for range voting.

"...in January 1970 it was revealed by Christopher Pyle, an investigator for Ervin's Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights, that the U.S. Army was performing domestic investigations on the civilian population. Ervin's further investigations on the matter over the following years, together with the Church Committee inquiries, led to passage of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act."
- from Wikipedia
"Today a majority of the Senate sided with the Bush administration and against the rule of law. It was a sadly bipartisan effort, with more than two-thirds of senators voting for a bill that includes blanket immunity for companies that assisted the administration's illegal warrantless wiretapping. Even in an election year with demagogues ready to scream appeaser at those who take a stand, it's a disappointing day. We should be able to expect more from our public officials."
The axiom above does not just pertain to the defendant.
I just read an article* which stated Karl Rove has defied a subpoena to testify before Congress. The subpoena was issued in March and pertains to "whether he played a role in prosecutors' decisions to pursue cases against Democrats, such as former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, or in firing federal prosecutors considered disloyal to the Bush administration."
The firings were noted back in Jan. '07 and Siegelman was convicted and sent to prison in '06 and was recently released while the conviction is under appeal since Raw, 60 Minutes and others have exposed Republican political influence to prosecute him.
The American public are being bludgeoned by an on-going criminal enterprise while our judicial system moves at a glacial pace. (Actually, due to Republican foot dragging, glaciers are now moving quicker than our legal protectors.)
How many flagrant abuses can YOU think of which are still being carried on because justice for us is being denied? Ken Lay is the poster boy. He died on the golf course and his death denied those he swindled from recourse but his heirs made out just fine.
Our system does not work any longer.

I, along with many of my fellow Dems, have railed against the do-nothing Congress. It is now time for us, and no one else, to do something. A clear message needs to be sent to Senator Obama that if he wants the choreography of Clinton Dems, Dean Dems, Edwards and Kennedy Dems, he'd better dance with the partner that brung him.

You are the last line of defense for the Constitution. With the FISA vote looming, the Bush administration and their allies in the Senate are pushing harder than ever to grant immunity to telecom companies who spied illegally on innocent Americans.
Like Sen. Russ Feingold told DFA members yesterday:
"We should celebrate our Constitution this Fourth of July -- and do everything we can to prevent it from being torn up when the Senate returns to Washington DC next week."

I have only one problem with this AP article and that is when the center is defined as half way between right and wrong.

Analysis: Obama's shifts to center give GOP ammo
The Illinois senator has excited many with the notion that he is a new, transcendent type of politician. But he is giving the GOP effort ammunition and endangering his "Change We Can Believe In" motto with several shifts to the center, most recently on the Iraq war, his campaign's defining issue.
---
Obama has been espousing positions anathema to the left on several issues.
On Iraq, Obama said Thursday that his upcoming trip there might lead him to refine his promise to quickly remove U.S. troops from the war.
He now supports broader authority for the government's eavesdropping program and legal immunity for telecommunications companies that participated in it, after opposing a similar bill last year.
After the Supreme Court overturned the District of Columbia's gun ban, the handgun control proponent said he favors both an individual's right to own a gun as well as government's right to regulate ownership.
Obama became the first major-party candidate to reject public financing for the general election after earlier promises to accept it.
He not only embraced but promised to expand Bush's program to give more anti-poverty grants to religious groups, a split with Democratic orthodoxy.
He objected to the Supreme Court's decision outlawing the death penalty for child rapists, even though he's been anti-capital punishment.
Obama also said "mental distress" should not count as a health exception that would permit a late-term abortion, saying "it has to be a serious physical issue," addressing a matter considered crucial to abortion rights activists.

Since when did Obama become a medical professional?
Since when did Obama become qualified to distinguish between physical and mental risk?
Feel free to correct me, but I am under the distinct impression all pro-choice advocates believe "choice" should be between a woman and her doctor.

"I will continue to support him," Mr. Moulitsas, a liberal blogger and founder of the Daily Kos Web site, said in an interview. "But I was going to write him a check, and I decided I would rather put that money with Democrats who will uphold the Constitution."

Paul Krugman nails this one.

We, the Democrats, will shortly have an opportunity to make great strides but the people will have to provide direction. We need to get over our pop-star awe (whatever you do is grand) and make known we are looking for more than walk-on-water transcendence.
No matter how anxious we might be to show our openness to change by electing the first candidate of mixed race, he better show his abilities to effect change or go down in the books as an "unca" who failed to deliver when given the opportunity.
It may be subliminal prejudice, but more will be expected of Obama. I hope he chooses to deliver.
The email had a message from John Edwards soliciting a contributions for DCCC. In part it said, "Imagine a White House led by President Obama- and a strengthened Democratic majority led by Speaker Pelosi."
Sorry John, but I cannot imagine Nancy Pelosi lending strength to anyone or anything. The DNC's coffers are looking slim because of a do-nothing Congress. Tell me about efforts to support Democratic challengers to ineffective incumbents and you'll have a better chance.
The early headlines did nothing to sweeten my outlook on the day. "Fed aided Wall Street to avert contagion". The translation for "contagion" turned out to be elite-speak for the domino effect. Bear Sterns overextended itself presuming the housing bubble would expand indefinitely - and these guys are supposedly financial experts. Please note, the bailout allowed JP Morgan to purchase Sterns for pennies on the dollar. There is no assurance Morgan is rock-solid, only that it was the most secure of the potential bidders.
Yesterday was much better - before those strange people at the Supreme Court activated their activist agenda. Yesterday's early top story was, "Vatican paper says pope does not wear Prada".
