Attention Colorado Voters

If you are not yet registered, you still have time. The last day to register to vote in Colorado is October 6th. If you are not sure about your status, you can verify your voter registration information online. It will take you less than 5 minutes.

If you have not requested your Mail In Ballot, do so now. We are trying to get as many voting by mail-in ballot as possible to avoid the electronic voting machine problems. You can avoid the long lines, the cold weather, and the grumpy voters by sitting at home taking your time to cast your votes.

You can print off the Colorado Mail-In Ballot Application, fill it out, sign it and mail, fax or email it as a PDF to your County Clerk’s office no later than Tuesday, October 28, 2008. However, don’t wait that long, the election is November 4, 2008 so the sooner the better! It is strongly advised that instead of requesting a mail-in ballot so late you instead go to one of the early voting locations in your county and cast your vote.

If you are a first time voter and you register by mail to vote in the State of Colorado, you are required to submit with your application one of the following forms of identification when you return your Mail-In Ballot Application. DO NOT include original documents with the application. Please submit a copy of one of the following forms of identification:

Clinton Creates 'whip Team' To Quell Anti-Obama Protests

(The Politico) In an unusual move, Hillary Clinton's staff is creating a 40-member "whip team" at the Denver Democratic convention to ensure that her supporters don't engage in embarrassing anti-Obama demonstrations during the floor vote on her nomination, according to people familiar with the planning.

The team, which is being organized by longtime Clinton staffer Craig Smith, is working in conjunction with Obama's floor organizers to help foster the image of a unified front during a roll-call process Clinton herself has described as an emotional "catharsis" for her disappointed supporters.

"If people get down there on the floor and want to start blowing kazoos and making a scene we want to make sure we've got people who stand in front of them with Obama signs," said person involved in the planning.

"Is it typical for a losing candidate to have their own whip team? No. But it's also not usual for a losing candidate to get 18 million votes either," said the person.

Clinton spokesperson Kathleen Strand emphasized the team would not seek to convince delegates to vote for the former first lady, but would hand out Clinton signs to supporters who requested them.

“We have been and are working closely with the Obama campaign to make sure we have an exciting and unified convention," Strand said. "Our delegate whips, along with the Obama delegate whips, are a part of a team that will be on the floor of the convention to make sure delegates have everything they need, whether that’s answering questions or passing out signs during Hillary's speech. The whips are a traditional part of every convention's floor operations.”

Plans for the squad were finalized last weekend. Although some former Clinton staffers balked at policing their own supporters, its ranks were filled by people itching for a floor pass -- not an easy get for Clinton's troops at the Obama-run convention.

As I mentioned earlier, in a confounding decision, it appears that organizers for the Democratic National Convention are denying any speaking role to the party's most prominent military leader, former Gen. Wesley Clark.

Clark's office told The Washington Note that the Obama campaign did not ask him to speak or play any role in Denver, so he does not plan to attend the convention. An aide added, however, that Clark would rearrange his schedule to come "play any constructive role" that the campaign desired.

This weekend, Wesley Clark Jr. emphasized that his father's plan to skip the convention was "not a fake-out or some secret plan," and he predicted that Clark "isn't going to be VP or probably anything else in an Obama administration, assuming he's elected." Responding to blog commenters who were brainstorming how to support the retired general, Clark Jr. also dismissed the efficacy of grass-roots efforts to pressure Obama:

I know some you think you can change this by launching VP [blog] diaries a couple times a day in hopes that Obama will be swayed by the "netroots." Dude, when has that ever worked with this campaign?

Yet the political question is not whether Team Obama cares that bloggers like Clark. The big question earlier is this:

Why is the 2008 Democratic Convention boxing out one of the most popular people in the party?

Put aside the netroots, and Clark consistently ranks as one of the most requested surrogate speakers for all Democratic events and fund-raisers across the country. (That means lots of swing states.) Add in the four-star factor -- in a race against a GOP war hero -- and a convention night devoted to honoring the military and this choice looks downright delusional. I'll outline some possibilities in the next post.

WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton's name will be placed in nomination along with nominee-in-waiting Barack Obama at the Democratic convention in Denver, an emblematic move intended to unite the party after a divisive primary fight.

Democrats will officially nominate Obama at the convention but the state delegations will do a traditional roll call for his vanquished opponent as well.

The arrangement — which the rivals-turned-allies agreed to after weeks of negotiations — is intended to help the Democratic Party heal after a bruising primary while mollifying still-disgruntled Clinton backers and acknowledging the former first lady's groundbreaking presidential run.

"I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion," Obama, an Illinois senator, said in a joint statement.

Added Clinton, a New York senator: "With every voice heard and the party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama president of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again."

Some 35 million people participated in the Democratic primary, and Obama and Clinton said they wanted to "honor and celebrate these voices and votes."

Mark Warner, Keynote Speaker for Convention

RICHMOND, Aug. 13 -- Mark R. Warner, the former Virginia governor and a candidate for the U.S. Senate, will deliver the keynote address the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Democratic party officials announced Wednesday.

It was the convention's keynote speech four years ago that launched presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama to national prominence. Warner's address on Aug. 26 will be broadcast to millions around the United States.

Warner, who considered running for president, is competing against former governor James S. Gilmore III (R) for the Senate seat. He has taken his name out of consideration to be Obama's running mate.

McCain warns Russians of "severe, long-term negative consequences"

Hoping to further burnish his commander-in-chief credentials while his rival is on vacation and the president is abroad, John McCain appeared before cameras this morning to offer a lengthy primer on the crisis in the Caucasus, explain why it matters to America and outline steps that he thinks the U.S. and West should take to halt the violence.

McCain, speaking in Erie, Pennsylvania, before a bus trip of the state, also used the opportunity to send a warning shot to the Russians.

"Russian President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin must understand the severe, long-term negative consequences that their government’s actions will have for Russia’s relationship with the U.S. and Europe," McCain said.

And, describing the Russian assaults that have gone beyond the disputed territory and into sovereign Georgia as "Moscow's path of violent aggression," the GOP nominee suggested that Putin's aim may be to overthrow the pro-U.S. government in Georgia.

"This should be unacceptable to all the democratic countries of the world, and should draw us together in universal condemnation of Russian aggression," McCain said.

The harder line toward the Kremlin comes as President Bush and, even more, Vice-President Cheney similarly ratchet up their criticism and as key neoconservative thinkers and McCain allies Robert Kagan and Bill Kristol take to the op-ed pages to urge action.

Georgia To Pull All Troops Out of Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) - Georgia will remove all of its 2,000 soldiers from Iraq to join the fighting in the breakaway province of South Ossetia as soon as transport can be arranged, the commander said Saturday.

A U.S. military spokesman says the departure of the Georgian contingent _ the third largest contributor to coalition forces after the U.S. and Britain _ will have "some impact" in the near term but no significant long-term effect on Iraq's security.

Col. Bondo Maisuradze, commander of the Georgia brigade, told The Associated Press that all his troops would be leaving, but he couldn't say when because transportation arrangements had not been finalized. "All the Georgian guys will be leaving for the homeland," he said.

The Georgians have asked the United States to provide transportation, and U.S. spokesman Capt. Charles G. Calio said all options are being considered.

Last year, the Georgians raised the number of troops in Iraq from 850 to 2,000 at a time when most non-American contingents were cutting back _ a move that won them points with U.S. commanders.

The Georgians also agreed to move their troops from the relatively safe Green Zone in Baghdad to an area southeast of the capital to help interdict supplies being smuggled to Shiite extremists from Iran. At least five Georgians soldiers have died in Iraq.

Fighting raged a second day Saturday in Georgia's separatist South Ossetia region. On Friday, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN that the troops in Iraqi would be called home to join the fighting and restore Georgian rule in the province.

Russia responded by sending troops into South Ossetia, saying it wanted to protect civilians in the province, most of whom hold Russian citizenship.

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday reiterated his call for ending the Iraq war and urged the Iraqi government to take responsibility for the country's security.

"It's time to end the war in Iraq responsibly by asking the Iraqis to take responsibility for their future and to invest in their own country," Obama said in his weekly radio address.

Obama said that Americans had learned this week that the Iraqi government now had a 79-billion-dollar budget surplus thanks to their oil profits. While this Iraqi money sits in American banks, American taxpayers continue to spend 10 billion dollars a mon th to defend and rebuild Iraq, the Illinois senator pointed out.

"Our country has spent nearly a trillion dollars in Iraq, even as our schools are underfunded, our roads and bridges are crumbling, and the cost of everything from groceries to a gallon of gas is soaring," Obama noted.

"Now think for a moment about what we could have done with the hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars that we've spent in Iraq," he continued.

"We could have rebuilt American schools and roads and bridges. We could have made historic investments in alternative energy to create millions of American jobs."

I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict. Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full scale war. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected. All sides should enter into direct talks on behalf of stability in Georgia, and the United States, the United Nations Security Council, and the international community should fully support a peaceful resolution to this crisis.
