Young Democrats of Oklahoma to Hold State Convention June 7th

Oklahoma City (May 13, 2008) - Young Democrats of Oklahoma announced they would hold their annual state convention June 7th at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Union Hall at 1700 Southeast 15th St. in Oklahoma City.

The annual convention will host an array of speakers, including Democratic leaders in the state. Elections for one-year termed officers will also be held. All Young Democrats across the state are welcome to attend.

Young Democrats of Oklahoma President Josh Smith stresses the importance of motivating young Democrats in this state.

“Our goal at the state convention is to organize our young people in the state,” said Smith. “We want to give our young Democrats the tools to go out in the field and conduct a grassroots campaign to turn Oklahoma blue.”

Smith emphasized the impact young people can have in the political process.

“This year is a vital election year and Young Democrats of Oklahoma has the opportunity to capitalize on the Democratic movement going on in this state in the nation,” said Smith. “Democrats gained ground in the 2006 elections and we hope to continue that same trend with the upcoming elections in November.”

Young Democrats of Oklahoma is an organization that mobilizes young people under the age of 36 to participate in the electoral process, be involved in the Oklahoma Democratic Party and strives to develop the skills of Oklahoma youth to serve as leaders at the local and national level.

The convention will begin at 8 am. Speakers, events and registration details of the Young Democrats of Oklahoma convention will be released as soon as they are confirmed. This information can be found on the Young Democrats of Oklahoma Facebook group. For more information on the convention, please contact youngdemocratsoklahoma@gmail.com

Senate Bill 2093 will be heard in the House Appropriations and Budget Committee at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8. This bill would create tax credits (vouchers) for those who donate to a scholarship fund that would be used by parents to send their children to private schools. The purpose is to divert much-needed public school funding to private schools. Charitable donations shouldn’t come with a tax credit, especially if they are to be subsidized by taxpayers at the expense of public schools?Call or write members of the House Appropriations and Budget Committee (see list below) today and encourage them to vote against this attack on public schools.

A Message from your new State Chair Ivan Holmes
Oklahoma Democratic Party

Dear Grassroots:

As your new Democratic State Party Chair I am asking for your immediate help. Currently we have close to a zero balance in our bank accounts and close to $15,000 in outstanding expenses from our State Convention. I must also raise $35,000 to pay our June bills.

Because we have no money I will not replace Lisa Pryor or Lindsey Coster who were both being paid by the State Democratic Party and this will save about $110,000 over one fiscal year.

My goal is to get 1,000 Democrats to pledge $25.00 a month to help pay our monthly expenses and give us a strong base of support. The early response has been good but we still have a long way to go. I hope each of you will give up the cost of a movie for two once a month to help the party. Senator Andrew Rice and Sen. Debbe Leftwich have already pledged their support and we hope you will too.

We need your help in 2007.

If you have any questions feel free to give me a call, 405.427.3366. I hate to have to ask each of you for your help after two weeks on the job but I have no choice if we are going to pay our monthly bills. Thanks for your support in electing me your state party chair. I will work hard to not let you down.

Please join today so we can help Democrats tomorrow.

With Thanks:

Ivan Holmes

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Barely one week on the job, Oklahoma Democratic Party chairman Ivan Holmes is scrambling to put together a new staff and raise enough money to keep the party's office open past June.

Holmes, elected to replace outgoing party head Lisa Pryor at the party's statewide convention on May 19, also said he has received hundreds of e-mails and phone calls from Oklahoma Democrats since his election complaining that the party is not aggressive enough opposing President Bush and the war in Iraq.   Read More »
