L.A. Times article read's as follows:.
Denver's City Council president is getting hammered with hate-filled messages in response to Tuesday's surprise performance of the "Black National Anthem" by a jazz singer during a city event.
Chanteuse René Marie had been invited by Mayor John Hickenlooper's office to sing the national anthem during his annual State of the City address.
Council President Michael Hancock, the master of ceremonies, introduced Marie, who sang what is known as the "Black National Anthem" instead.
Her performance evoked angry reactions among some of the estimated 700 people at the event.
"There is no substitute for the national anthem. Period," Councilman Charlie Brown said.
"This is the State of the City address. It's not an NAACP convention," he said, referring to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Hickenlooper and his staff said they expected Marie to sing the "The Star-Spangled Banner" and that they were surprised when she sang something different.
In a statement late Tuesday, Hickenlooper said: "I'm disappointed that this matter has been a distraction from the great work and significant accomplishments of our city employees over the past year and the many important initiatives on tap for the coming year."
Hickenlooper said in an interview that he spoke to Marie after the ceremony and that she apologized profusely.
The mayor also said that Marie told him she meant no disrespect.
"She blended the two songs together," Hickenlooper said. "She was trying to make an artistic expression of her love for the country. She did not intend to make a political statement or anything."
Marie sang the first verse of James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," also known as the "Black National Anthem," but adapted those lyrics to the tune of the "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Marie said she had no regrets. She deliberately didn't tell anybody about her song choice "because I don't think it is necessary for an artist to ask permission to express themselves artistically," she said.
"I would not change a thing," Marie said.
"You have to risk things. You have to. Otherwise, you might of well live your life by a script."
Hancock said he had no idea that Marie was going to sing anything but the national anthem.
"I just read off the script, which was to introduce her to do the national anthem, so I expected the national anthem," he said.
Hancock, who met Marie for the first time Tuesday, said Marie should have cleared her song choice with the mayor and his administration.
It was "inappropriate" that she didn't, he said.
"She certainly should have given the mayor and the administration the opportunity to decide if they wanted her to sing the song that she sang," he said.
Hancock said he's been getting hate-filled e-mails over the song.
"I'm getting â" as if I made the decision to do this â" I'm receiving a lot of hate mail," he said. "I've received quite a few e-mails that are quite nasty."

While a number of speakers -- such as Railroad Commission chairman Michael Williams and Mike Huckabee -- have praised the advance of Barack Obama and what it means towards a colorblind society, at least one vendor hasn't gotten the message.
At the Republican state convention, a booth hosted by Republicanmarket was selling a pin Saturday that says: If Obama is President will we still call it the White House.
There were other pins that weren't necessarily conveying the positive, inclusive, united front that has been portrayed during the convention. One said, "Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation" and another, "I will hold my nose when I vote for McCain"

One of the women, Shimaa Abdelfadeel, told the Free Press that Obama called her "to personally convey his deepest apologies and acknowledge that this was inexcusable."

Senator Obama's campaign is apologizing after campaign volunteers reportedly kept two Muslim women from appearing behind the senator at a Detroit rally on Monday because they were wearing headscarves.
One witness, Ali Koussan, told the Politico that one volunteer cited "the political climate," "what's going on in the world," and "what's going on with Muslim Americans" before stating that it wouldn't be helpful for one of the hijab-wearing women to appear in television pictures with Mr. Obama.
"I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me? Are you serious?" Mr. Koussan said.
"This is of course not the policy of the campaign. It is offensive and counter to Obama's commitment to bring Americans together and simply not the kind of campaign we run," a spokesman for the campaign, William Burton, told the political news outlet. "We sincerely apologize for the behavior of these volunteers."
The Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Mr. Obama to invite the two women who were snubbed to appear with him at a future event.

Rice says Bush drilling proposal 'won't break our addiction to oil'
Rice: 'Expanded off-shore drilling won't break our addiction to oil'
Press Release:
Wednesday, June 18, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Rice said Wednesday that President Bush's proposal to expand off-shore drilling is an election-year gimmick that is not a true solution for rising energy costs. He also said the proposal comes from the same energy moguls who brought us $4-a-gallon gasoline.
"Just like the gas tax holiday won't bring relief to consumers, expanded off-shore drilling won't break our addiction to oil and reduce prices at the pump" Rice said. "Any politician who tells you that there is a silver bullet to bring down energy prices is not being honest with you, and there are no easy choices now that we are so dependent on one fuel source for our transportation and commerce."
Rice said Oklahomans tell him that they want long-term energy solutions, not band-aid proposals that protect the status quo.
"Oklahoma's abundant natural resources give our state the opportunity to lead the way to the new energy economy," he said. "Clean burning natural gas, wind and ethanol from switchgrass are all fuel sources that can help our country earn independence from oil sheiks and big oil companies.
"And these fuels can be readily available as soon or sooner than more oil from off shore. We should allow the most powerful force in the world — American innovation and technology — to build the path to a clean, efficient and affordable energy supply."
Rice said he does not support removing restrictions for off-shore drilling. Those restrictions were put in place by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 and have been supported by most political leaders in coastal states, including the current President Bush's brother, former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida.
"What the oil companies aren't telling us is that 80 percent of offshore oil is already available for drilling," Rice said. "What they don't tell us is that it will take five to 10 years for any new oil wells to produce a single gallon of oil. By that time, that single gallon could cost you $12.50. These big energy companies also do not mention to Oklahomans that they are currently not producing oil or gas on nearly 68 million acres of federal property onshore and offshore already under their control."

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/18/2008) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today urged Sen. Barack Obama to invite two Muslim women, who were barred from sitting behind the podium at a Michigan rally, to an upcoming campaign event.
Media reports indicate the women were kept from the podium area because campaign volunteers did not want the candidate associated with the women's Islamic scarves, or hijabs. Campaign officials later apologized to the women.

A Japanese venture company, Genepax, has unveiled a car on that runs on water. All it requires is a litre of water. In fact, any kind of water to be exact, whether its river, rain, sea water, or even Japanese tea. Its an electric powered car that runs solely on hydrogen dioxide.
"The main characteristic of this car is that no external input is needed. The car will continue to run as long as you have a bottle of water inside for you to add from time to time," said Kiyoshi Hirasawa, Chief Executive Officer of Genepax, after he proudly announced the company's invention.
Once water is poured into the water tank at the back of the car, the newly invented energy generator takes out the hydrogen from the water, releases electrons and finally generates electrical power.
"We highly recommend our system since it does not require you to build up an infrastructure to recharge your batteries, which is usually the case for most electric cars," said Hirasawa, who is hoping to advertise the car in time for the upcoming G8 Summit in Hokkaido, Japan.
