During Early Voting and on Election Day, it is important for informed Democrats to serve as Poll Watchers, volunteers who are allowed to observe the voting process in the polling place. There are rules and procedures to follow.  Your county Democratic Party will offer training to Poll Watchers.

We have poll watchers and poll greeters.  Poll watchers are inside the polling place and we are part of the process as observers to make sure that things are done correctly by the Republicans who are in  charge of our polling places.  Usually one poll watcher is allowed per polling place. {In Texas, the party who won the last General Election is in charge of the polling places.}  The Poll watchers are from the other party--that's us.

Poll Greeters are outside the 100-foot marker and their activities are not very restricted. They can electioneer, help voters with ballots, wave candidate signs, and help support Democrats in the voting process as long as they stay outside the 100 ft marker of the polling place.  we will need lots of poll greeters too.

Like many of you, I have been working hard on voter registration for weeks now, and plan to continue to do so until midnight, October 6. But registering voters is pointless unless we get those voters to the polls.

Fortunately, in Texas, we have two provisions for early voting. Our Early Voting in Person procedure is quick and easy, and I will discuss it in detail in a separate post.  However, for some people voting by mai, or absentee voting, is the only option. The rules are a little stricter here, but are easily complied with by planning and early action.

Want to vote absentee ballot, or obtain one for someone else? Well, here's how it's done in Texas.

I have been greatly disturbed over the past few days. We have been provided a red herring, and we have been totally distracted from the real quarry and have been knocked off of our game.

STOP!! It is time to straighten out before this campaign is severely damaged.

During Gustav and possibly as Hannah follows we're at a Crossroads. How do our candidates look Presidential while not appearing to politicize the situation? How do we as not only Democrats but as Americans help those in need during this time? How do we as Democrats counter the RNC and the tone of their convention? Our future as a nation is in peril under a McCain-Palin ticket. I pray for the safety of all Americans and for our candidates to be given wisdom to make the right decisions during these trying times. I'll be gathering my attack material and holding it close to the vest till the storm passes. God bless the USA!
After witnessing an incredible convention we must now retire to the War Room and strategize! The RNC know that their convention couldn't come close so McCain will probably give his acceptance speech from the gulf coast region to appear Presidential. We must counteract the effects... If Barack Obama rolls up his sleeves and arrives in the region it might help but seeing a mulitude of Obama T-shirt wearing volunteers pitching in feeding those in the path of the storm and rebuilding the area is our best offense and our defense. Obama contributing personal funds could steal some RNC thunder as well. Now is the time to think smart and react swiftly and decisively.

We must use our response to their convention to praise their concern for the country and more so our party's action during this disaster. We must appear as the party of action and they of talk. The convention itself is a moot point.

McCain's age must be addressed indirectly and not by the campaign itself. We need to come out with both barrels blazing yet utilizing a silencer. Sara Palin's extreme right wing views must be addressed indirectly a as well and not by the campaign itself.

Remember the hare is quick and experienced, exuding confidence. It is the tortoise though that takes the time to think through the task at hand, moves forward continually, exudes patience and inner calm. Displaying a keen sense of awareness, it is he who wins the race.
First and foremost. All of my prayers and good thoughts are going out to all of the people on the Gulf Coast. God be with them in these trying and dangerous times.

Now, I keep seeing online and on TV about how 'close' this election is, according to the polls. But these polls have to be faulty.

Polls have there base in previous 'models'. How the country trended in past elections is taken into consideration, and then they build from there.

Not included in these 'models' is the large number of young people that Barack Obama brought into our primaries for the first time, just as it doesn't include the extremely large increase, during our primaries, in the number of African-American voters who turned out.

Both of these groups together combine to create a large hole within the numbers that the poll companies continue to release. I honestly believe they are HEAVILY skewed.

I really have to think that when I see John McCain's choice for a running mate. His campaign KNOWS that putting a woman on the ticket, that has NO tolerance for reproductive rights of women and loves to be photographed with assault rifles, will NOT bring many, if any, Hillary Clinton supporters to their cause.

The Palin choice is nothing short of minimizing the down-ballot losses in November. It was made to shore up the Republican base. The right-wing fanatics who think the Constitution is just an irritating little document on display at the National Archives! Otherwise, they would have put someone up for nomination that actually has at least SOME credible and relevent experience to bring to the job.

The idea of putting an empty resume on the ballot otherwise makes no sense at all.

And I believe it is because that their 'internal' polls are telling the GOP that McCain is a lost cause, so salvage whatever you can. George W. Bush has successfully put his party on the ledge of complete self-destruction and he has done it nearly single-handedly.

And I also believe that the Obama campaign is seeing the same things.

In other words, (as if anybody really cares, of course), I believe that this campaign is nowhere NEAR close. Polls looked really close in 1980, but the night before the election, President Jimmy Carter shed tears, while on Air Force One, when told by his people that there was NO way that they could win the election.

And as I remember.....sadly for sure......it turned out a Ronald Reagan landslide!

HI I just got back from the Obama Dallas center about an hour ago. I was there today so I could get deputized to register voters as that is a legal requirement that I have ignored for the past three years.  I've been to the center several times before, but I will be going back more often.  It is very energizing and reminds me of all the good reasons why I'm doing this--It's for me and for the children.  Here are some photos that I took there this morning.  There are also more photos on my website http://iflizwerequeen.com

Well, I guess we can add lawyers to the growing list of endangered critters in Colombia.  We have children, small farmers, unionists and  now lawyers to add to the endangered species list."Lawyers without Borders" recently took a tour of Colombia and determined that access to justice, impunity and violation of human rights are widespead in Colombia.

"The simple act of practicing law is perceived as a subversive action because many of our colleagues have suffered harassment and even death threats."

Between 1996 and 2006, 125 lawyers were murdered in Colombia and in 2004 (under Uribe's rule) 24 lawyers were killed in the southeastern city of Cali--three of them in front of the Palace of Justice.  Today, four years later, no charges have been brought.

The group concluded:  "The minimum requirements of international standards of protection and independence of the legal provession and state law are not met here.  WITHOUT THESE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS THERE IS NO RULE OF LAW.

And the Bush Administration want Congress to approve a trade agreement with a country that has no rule of law?   NO ON THE COLOMBIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENT.

William Wineberg, distinguished attorney, Republican, fellow Navy veteran, and just turning 72 years old, posted an open greeting to John McCain on the Republicans for Obama mail server on BarackObama.com.

It is a delightful, respectful read. I have copied it below.

What a stirring narrative was delivered by Beau Biden last night. And what a ringing endorsement for what family values really mean.

I admit as a father and grandfather, I shared in his pride and love for the remarkable man his little boy turned out to be. I would say he received a wonderful return on the investment he made in countless hours of train commutes, hours standing by bedsides, late night visits to his children's beds.   Read More »
