US, Japan call for action on oil, food prices ahead of G8 meet

TOYAKO, Japan (AFP) — The United States and Japan called Sunday for urgent action on red-hot oil and food prices that could derail the global economy on the eve of a summit of the world's richest nations.

As US President George W. Bush arrived at this mountain resort, authorities sealed off Japan's northern island of Hokkaido, with demonstrations relegated to its largest city, Sapporo.

Group of Eight leaders will hold three days of talks in the resort town of Toyako that will be dominated by the fragile world economy, global warming and problems ranging from Zimbabwe to North Korea and Iran's nuclear ambitions.

In pre-summit talks, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda said he and Bush had agreed that urgent efforts are needed to tackle surging oil and food prices.

The dual crises "are having a negative impact on the world economy," Fukuda told a joint press conference. "We agreed there's a need for swift efforts on these fronts."

The leaders of the world's two largest economies also touched on climate change, North Korea's nuclear programme and aid to Africa.

Security was formidable across picturesque Hokkaido, with around 21,000 police deployed to protect the leaders as they huddle in a luxury hilltop hotel.

The leaders of the G8 -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia and the United States -- will be joined by those of some 15 other countries including China, India, Brazil, Australia and eight African states for expanded sessions on global warming and poverty alleviation.

Four Months Out, Rick Noriega's Message for Change for Texas Families Resonates With Voters; Noriega Well Positioned to Take Victory in November

Houston, TX – A poll released today by Texas Lyceum, a statewide, non-partisan  leadership group, showing Rick Noriega in a deadheat race for the U.S. Senate with incumbent John Cornyn, tells the same story that Rick Noriega's hearing from Texans every day: they're ready for a change.

The live interview poll has Noriega with 36 points and John Cornyn at 38 with still 24 percent undecided voters and a margin of error of 4.5 percent. Underscoring the deep desire for change in the state, 70 percent of Texans believe the country is on the wrong track and only 23 percent say "things are moving in the right direction." This is the third independent poll showing a tight race between John Cornyn and Rick Noriega.

Why is this date significant?

Today I visited with someone who displays grace, poise, beauty and integrity she carries herself with all the style and strength that made so many women of her diminishing generation irreplaceable.

I am speaking of my Great Aunt who on 07 Feb 2009 will turn 100 years of age to her this is no big deal she simply smiles and says “God must have a plan for me which is as yet unfulfilled” I found this simple phrase from her so profound I thought about it all the way home and believe me it was a long drive.

She is perfectly content and travels with her youngest daughter (62) to visit all her friends and relatives on a weekly basis, she walks without any aid and fairly spry yet I was struck by the elegance, graciousness and humility no longer displayed in a post Victorian America.

She is the last of my grandfathers sisters and the last of a truly great generation and I pray to God we have her for a lot longer it is always wonderful to spend time with her her mind is clear and sharp and did not read history she lived it at least the last almost 100 years of it.

Thank you for allowing me to post this it means a lot.

Obama mixes politics, holiday barbecue

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

BUTTE, Montana (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama mixed presidential politics with parades and barbecue on U.S. Independence Day on Friday, celebrating his daughter's birthday with a picnic and fireworks in Montana.

Obama, concluding a week-long campaign tour focused on values and patriotism, was cheered by crowds as he watched a holiday parade and threw a picnic for supporters in Butte -- a Democratic bastion in a state that normally votes Republican in White House races.

Obama was joined by his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia, who was celebrating her 10th birthday.

Debate Over Guantanamo's Fate Intensifies

By Dan Eggen and Josh WhiteWashington Post Staff Writers
Friday, July 4, 2008; Page A01

The Bush administration is developing a long-range plan to empty the Guantanamo Bay military prison that could include asking Congress to spell out procedures for scores of suspected terrorists whom the government does not plan to bring to trial, administration officials and others familiar with high-level White House discussions on the issue said yesterday.

Under one scenario being considered by President Bush's Cabinet, about 80 detainees would remain at the facility in Cuba to be tried by military commissions, and about 65 others would be turned over to their native countries, according to several sources familiar with the talks, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

But the focus of the intensifying debate is what to do with about 120 remaining prisoners, who are viewed by the administration as too dangerous to release but who are unlikely to be brought before military commissions because of a lack of evidence. Officials are considering whether to propose legislation in coming days that would establish legal procedures for such prisoners, who could be transferred to military or civilian prisons on the U.S. mainland, sources said.

The debate follows a Supreme Court ruling last month that gave Guantanamo detainees the right to challenge their imprisonment in U.S. civilian courts. Senior administration officials have been scrambling to formulate a response, including holding Cabinet-level meetings on the topic the past two days, officials said.

Bush has said for at least two years that he would like to close Guantanamo Bay, but he and his aides said in response to an ABC News report that no such decision has been made. Instead, officials said, the administration's debate is focused on what steps would be necessary for such a closure, including moving scores of terrorism suspects to other U.S. detention facilities.

"We're analyzing the decision and how to move forward, and there's no decision that is imminent on Guantanamo," Bush said in an interview yesterday with Fox News. "But nevertheless, we have an obligation to live under the law, so we are fully analyzing the impact of the law. . . . We'll get it done as quickly as possible."

I know I will catch heat and grief for this but I have thought about this for a while and have come to a conclusion that I have always supported and will always be a supporter of  The Honorable Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

With that said I have decided after much deliberation and some consternation to Honor her wishes and support Sen. Barack Hussein Obama for president. My reasons for this are as follows:

1. I love my family

2. I love my country

3. I have a responsibility to insure the GW Bush term is ended.

4. I trust the judgment of Sen Clinton and as she so eloquently phrased it “The differences among us are minor. The differences between us and the Republicans are major. And I don't want anybody in America to be confused. “

5. No More War

There are more but this should be enough for now.

I hope I have not disappointed anyone with my decision but this is to important for idealism to take precedence over reason and logic.
