Pagan Activists for Change
About the Author
This group is for Pagan democrats that are working for change be it individually (volunteering for campaigns, holding voter registration drives) or for those working within an organization to promote change within our Government (ie Pagans United, Pagan Unity Campaign, etc).

Howard Dean came to Seattle recently, and gave a great speech about what the Democrats have done, are doing, and what we're going to do in 2007, 2008 and beyond.

Gov. Dean gave the core values that he is recommending the Democrats run on in 2008. Those values are Strength and Toughness, Fairness and .. oh, yeah, Fiscal Discipline. Strength and Toughness because we need to fix the impression that Democrats are weak on security. Fairness because it's an good way to frame the cultural issues that drive our country apart. And Fiscal Discipline because, well, the Republican's haven't shown any.

It was a good speech, but it was the speech of a party chair, not a Presidential Candidate. So, I'm going to do my duty as a citizen of this country and a member of this party who wants something more to vote on than STFFD. I'm going to re-frame and articulate these values my way.   Read More »
For several years, I've been using compact fluorescent bulbs (when I can get them - and it hasn't been easy.) Why aren't they more popular? The economy of obsolescence, bad decisions by light bulb manufacturers, and lack of interest may be the prime reasons.

Would you favor taxing incadescent bulbs to steer people to making the environmentally wise choice?
This is a particularly difficult season for me. The waning of the light and the shortening days strengthen the dark memories.
Link to the text of Bush's press conference - a difficult read. Though in one section he stole our slogan "we can do better" which was perhaps the only thing he got right.

He's redefined Iraq as a contest between "the ideology of liberty" vs "the ideology of hate" - how odd is that? We're in a battle of ideas, led by a nitwit who for the past 5 years has been trying to win with weapons and shifts the reasons for our entry more than the winds.   Read More »
Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza, Yuletide, or Sol Invictus (Link wikipedia) has a longer history and deeper roots than any one tradition. The solstice is hot wired into humans, we react to the diurnal and annual cycles more than rational folks would like to admit. It is a human necessity to admit the "dying of the light" but it is also quite human to put a spin of hope on it.
A well-deserved note of thanks to our outgoing Chairman of the DCCC who is changing hats to become the Chair of the Democratic Caucus. Link he left with an appeal for support of the new DCCC Chairman, Congressman Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.

Home truths and open secrets seem to be my area. Call them immodest proposals or bitter pills, they remain.

Argument is turning to whether the Iraq or Middle East is ready for nationalism versus tribalism. The greater question are we ready for the world as it has become. As some debate over which political tribe is more American, I acknowledge my dual citizenship. (Never said I didn't have a hidden agenda - it is opening your minds [and there's some nasty stuff in some of them sadly.])   Read More »
That no one (so far as I saw) commented on the meeting saddened me. Perhaps too many prefer to have other think for them (like Link following the comments of a fool.)

Watching the televised live broadcast was troubling, but reading the transcript was better for me. Recognizing that Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki of Iraq was hampered by language was something I did not recognize while watching. Link (I advise starting on page 2 with his statements) it bears reading. The NYTimes coverage in synopsis says
The president rejected a quick troop withdrawal, even as Iraq's prime minister said his countrys forces would be ready to take over substantial security responsibility by June next year.

There is a favorite quote of mine from Babe Ruth
"I know, but I had a better year than Hoover."

Syria and Iran must be involved in any solutions. The Isreali question and Lebannon are key to the problem we face in Iraq. Soon we will be seeing it re-emerge in Afghanistan. The situation of instability America was warned of before the invasion are coming true.

Now I hear you all speculating about 2008 -- wake up!
Changing course necessitates a real change.

Security Council vote
Another provision had proposed that a new United Nations observer force be sent into the area to monitor a cease-fire, but it was substituted with language suggested by France that called for the creation of “an international mechanism for the protection of civilians.”

Mr. Bolton said the United States considered this “a promise which is unwise and unnecessary and which, at any rate, raises false hopes.”

The resolution that was voted on requested that Secretary General Kofi Annan establish a fact-finding mission to investigate Wednesday’s attack and report back within 30 days and called for the resumption of international efforts to achieve peace by the so-called quartet " the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States.

Lebanon Talks collapse
Lebanon’s political stability, and the success or failure of the sitting government, is not just consequential for this country of four million. It is part of a broader contest between the United States, which backs the government coalition, and Iran and Syria, which support Hezbollah.

One of the crucial decisions coming up, and one that cannot be addressed by an interim government, is whether to approve a law to participate in an international tribunal on the assassination of Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister. The investigation into the killing has implicated Syrian officials. And on Friday, the United Nations Security Council presented Lebanon with a draft proposal for a framework of a tribunal to pursue the case.

The conduct of foreign policy needs to be totally changed. Confirming a man in such a critical role who has proven to be ineffectual would be more of the same.

The only hope for the future of the world lies in America returning to credible role in the United Nations as a responsible participant willing to work together, not a bully forcing through a misguided neo-con vision.

Show me the money!
Let's run the numbers 14 months after Hurricane Katrina
in Louisiana:

$7.5 billion program
only 1,721 have been told how much grant money they will receive
just 22 have received access to the cash

in Mississippi:

$3 billion plan
has now paid $320.6 million in 5,201 grants

Both stink on ice!
The coverage of Bush's announcement was more of the same lies and backstabbing. I recall a week or so ago his asserting that Rumsfeld had 'job security' - well obviously that term isn't one the President has much knowledge about or understanding of - or he's simply playing fast and loose with the truth again.

John Bolton, the unconfirmed US Representative to the UN, must go as well! If there is any truth in his listening to the will of the people and obeying the mandates of the Constitution, this is the action he must take.   Read More »
Earlier, I posted my peculiar views on the Economy, which is seriously flawed logic if ever I've seen any. Things are getting better as 90% of the wealth finds its way into 2% of the population.

Having an Energy policy drawn up 'by people in the know who we could not expose to criticism by knowing who they are' behind closed doors with Cheney in charge makes little sense. Link shows details and editorial comment about a latest (and possibly flawed) report from Britain.   Read More »
Under a new federal policy, children born in the United States to illegal immigrants with low incomes will no longer be automatically entitled to health insurance through Medicaid, Bush administration officials said Thursday.

The clause was inserted by the Republican side of the House Armed Services Committee over the objections of Democratic counterparts during a closed-door conference, and it has generated surprise and some outrage among lawmakers who say they had no idea it was in the final legislation.
Which part is most disturbing? We didn't know what we voted for or that the change was driven home "behind closed doors" - it is a toss up - bottomline it is time for a change.

We can do better.
It seems to me I heard the we've-made-mistakes, we'll-do-better-by-not-doing-more-of-the-same from George before and more than once. I particularly remeber one post-Thanksgiving and pre-State of the Union where he said he'd be listening to critics seriously.
NYTimes Article
While Mr. Bush has said repeatedly that the two parties approaches to Iraq should be a major issue in November, he acknowledged Wednesday that ultimately one person should be held responsible for progress in the war. "The ultimate accountability," Mr. Bush said, "rests with me."

Economy, Energy, Justice - it stinks whatever category you put it into. Is how Repiblicans would want us to lessen Government regulation and let the Marketplace police itself? I can't talk about Pensions - I'm to p---ed off to give it the attention it deserves.

Judge Throws Out Kenneth Lay's Conviction
HOUSTON, Oct. 17 A federal judge on Tuesday threw out the fraud and conspiracy conviction of Kenneth L. Lay, the former Enron executive, who died of heart failure in July while on vacation in Colorado.

But this efective shields Lay's estate from any claims to restitution for the crimes he is no longer 'guilty' of on a technicality, being dead. What of the employees who lost pensions and the investors who've lost money due to the illegalities which were once proven in court, but now have been washed clean? Justice is being ill-served IMO.

I was appalled at the sentence reduction by a Judge on the 10 yr deal made with the man who testified against the other two executives. He was contrite so the deal was sweetened to 4 yrs.

This give Law a bad name. I know justice and this is not it.
