Salt Lake City Avenues, Ut Volunteers for Obama
About the Author
A group for active volunteers for Obama
Much has been made about individual preferences for the nominee, The DNC, the primary rules, and defecting from the Democratic Party.
In all the discussion and exclaiming, it seems to me we have forgotten the most important thing, defeating John McCain. What is at stake is more than important. This election, more than any I can remember, is about what our country will be in decades to come.
I do not just participate in the elections on this blog. I am working the telephone banks, sending emails, talking to everyone I know, writing letters to the editor that are not diatribes, hosting my own events, participating in others, and blogging elsewhere.

No matter your commitment to either candidate, please do the same. It is so important for the Democratic nominee to win this election.

I am not a registered Democrat, but when I vote, I vote Democratic. I evaluate the candidates by their merit and not their party affiliation.
I thought this year I would be an activist and work to get the vote out and devote myself to the Party Building effort. But visiting this blog site has changed my mind.
My intent to participate was ill considered. I have led a sheltered life as far as politics are concerned. I was shocked by the personal insults traded on this blog. And so to prevent myself from becoming more disillusioned than I am, I will stop visiting this site. I am disolving my group, Avenues For Obama (don't tell me how much this pleases you, I know).
I am saddened by my own change of heart and the dialogue exchanged here. I want no part of this bitter, angry exchange.

I live in Utah, a state where being a member of the prominate religion with a party affiliation. The Mormon Church has come out with a statement that members should vote their conscience rather than along certain party lines. And although voting for a Democrat used to be a "sin" you should probably confess to your bishop, more and more people are starting to vote Democrat.
It's a good thing Clinton stayed in the race until the end. She has kept the nomination in front and center of the American viewing audience, and caused people to really think about the issues.
I plan to participate in the party building effort because a democracy requires a two party system. Even the most conservative voters are starting to worry about Bush, McCain. It's a good thing for Utah.

I want to be up-front about this. I support Barack Obama. But, if Hillary wins the nomination, if will certainly vote for her.
I want to see McCain defeated and I think the political atmosphere is "toxic" enough that it is more than possible. I'm quite sure it's going to happen, no matter who is the nominee.

Clinton supporters are more than disappointed about her projected loss of the Democratic nomination. Many of them are bitter, taking it as a blow against the gender. There have been widespread cries about a biased media and sexism. Some say it will be generations before a woman runs for president again.
Really. I think Clinton's campaign opened doors for other women. Though much was made of the gender comments, we would have heard more about tears if a male candidate had become emotional about his campaign chances.
There was a lot of anti-Hillary sentiment before she ran for the nomination. Remember what was said when she came out with a plan for health care during her husband's presidency? There was plenty of Hillary bashing going on back then, and it wasn't about gender.
Some think Hillary was just the wrong woman, not the wrong gender. Let's not be so quick to give up on women candidates.
A lot will be said about race in the upcoming election. Look, we're breaking ground here. What could we expect on either issue?

The idea a president would open channels of diplomacy, even hold talks with an enemy is not new. It has been traditional American diplomacy until the Bush administration substituted military action for talks.
JFK,Nixon, and Jimmy Carter all talked with the leaders of enemy nations. Those talks resulted in detante, the demise of the Berlin Wall, the end to the Cold War, the Camp David Peace Accords, and economic relations with China.

As a voter, I pay attention to the way candidates communicate. It is a good indication of what kind of president we can expect them to be. I am tired of cowboy talk. I am tired of attacks and smear tactics.
If Hillary supporters would like to see her in the White House as a presidential president, they should support her by hanging on to already tattered dignity and focus on her position on the issues.
Emotionalism never contributed much to victory or the image of women. As a feminist, I so hate the word "shrill."

Legislation that would provide community choice - acessible health care within communities - (sponsered by both Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton is opposed by John McCain.http://www.democrats.org/a/2008/04/_advocates_fort.php Bush/McCain have consistantly faild to provide for those with challenges. Their policies are often almost punitive to the most in need of support.
Our candidates are in touch with the people while John McCain (his campaign riddled by lobbyists and special interest group ties) continues to favor the upper income population.

McCain is against a measure that would fund education for veterans, proposing legislation that would provide less money to encourage venterans to re-enlist.
The original GI bill sent thousands of WWII veterans back to school and in doing so strengthend our economy and built the economy by fostering an educated workforce which made us the econmic force in the world that we have been.
The veterans are returning home, many with severe injuries they would not have survived in other wars because of cutting edge medical care in the field. These disabled vets deserve everything we can provide for them.
Many of those who are not physically injured suffer from post traumatic stress and there is a high suicide rate among returning soldiers.
Recurring deployments are taking a toll on the military. Trying to divert them from education to continued combat service is inhumane.
McCain, for all his military experience, has delivered a blow to veterans.

I have a severe mental illness. Therefore, I live on SSD and SSI. My income is little more than half poverty level. The Bush administration's plan to privatise social security will weaken an already beleagered program. Privatasation will result in reduced benefits.
People like me can ill afford to "foot the bill" for another Republican blunder. Every time Bush wants to cut spending, my food stamp allotment goes down as food prices go up. The Republican war on the poor has got to end.
The surplus of the Clinton years was spent long ago on the War in Iraq. Republican spending has put the rising national debt into overdrive. It may take generatiions to recover from this administration.
I have emailed my state representatives to vote against any effort to privatise Social Security. Please take a minute to do the same.

The Democractic nominees for president have show a strong commitment to the development and production of alternatives to foreign oil dependence. Bio-fuels can be produced not only from corn, but crop waste, and sugar cane. The funding called for,for research and development will ensure that the most efficient, cost effective alternative are viable options.
McCain's "environmentalist" identity is weak. He has not voted on any legislation concerning this issue for a year. The strategy of no voting record to attack only serves to underscore his failure to COMMIT to environmental issues.
Because this issue is so important to our country on several levels, his record should be made public and the difference between his position and the democratic nominees should be emphasized.

I have observed that many of you are still caught up in divisive quarels about Obama and Clinton. The nominee will be decided in due time according to the rules of the DNC.
For now, let's focus on McCain and the issues. I support my candidate of choice on their website. The discourse here should be about the party and the exciting campaign ahead.
No matter who is the nominee, we will need each other to defeat McCain and win victories in state elections.

See this article re John McCain's plan to organize democracies world wide.
Since the United States, under the Bush administration, has abandoned the Geneva convention and resorted to using mercinaries (Blackwater), a practice denounced by the United Nations, it is no wonder he wants to start his own UN.

I live in Utah, a state where a large majority of the voters automatically vote Republican. So entrenched is the Republican Party that they have a virtual gridlock on all the elections, local, state, and national.
However, after McCain secured his bid for the nomination, there was a widespread rumor voters were thinking about going for Obama. Unfortunatly, there is a strong anti-Hillary sentiment here that would make a democratic win nigh impossible. Forunately McCain is mistrusted here. And the LDS Church came out with the message that party affiliation is not connected to religion.
Groups like Mormons for Obama are trying to create inroads to the predonminate faith here. Democrats who, in the past, figured they might as well not bother to vote because it wouldn't count anyway (I am one of them) have changed their minds and intend to vote - many for the first time.
My belief in the Obama campaign is so overwhelming that I am volunteering and plan to do everything possible to facilitate his victory here. I live in Salt Lake City, one of the democratic islands in a red sea.
The new attitudes here can be fanned and encouraged with the commitment of grassroots work here - the same grassroot support that has raised so much money for Obama and energized people across the board. Democrats will galvanize behind Obama and influence the Republicans to do the same.
I urge super delegates to come out for Obama and get the campaign behind the clear winner for the nomination. We have indulged Clinton long enough. Please press her to withdraw with grace.
Our job in Utah would be much easier if the message from the party was unified. This is the first time in living memory a democrat had a chance in a presidential campaign.
A new group, Avenues Volunteers for Obama, has been created. The avenues is home to many progressives and liberals who would like to secure Obama's nomination and victory in November. I invite everyone who is working for Obama in this area to join. It's not trite to say we really can make a difference.
